[Q] Can't create backup using TWRP - General Questions and Answers

I just rooted my phone and I am a total noob with all the software and such. I have a Samsung Galaxy Centura. I installed TWRP to make some backups and I haven't been successful with it. I check all the things I want to backup, select the backup name and hit the slider. The phone reboots into recovery and gives me a menu with 5 items on it. One to reboot the phone, 2 to wipe data, and 2 to load roms. I did some digging around to figure out how things are supposed to work and I think there should be a selection for a nandroid menu or something. I don't have that.
I tried putting the backup on internal vs. external, and also shortened the backup name.
Anyone have any idea where I might be going wrong?

[Q] Titanium Backup

Hi guys, quick question
I have backed my phone up with titanium Backup, if I was to lose all my data how would I be able to re apply it? Would I just log in to titanium with my user name and upload everything??
I have looked at forums for the answer but have had no luck,
Thanks
Titanuim backup is an app. If you make a backup through this app it will back everything up into a folder on the SD card.
When you perform a factory reset it will wipe everything except whatever is on the sd card.
So after the wipe, install titanium from the market, and restore all the apps.
if your going to format the sd card, copy over the titanuim backup folder onto your pc or upload to dropbox or similar. Format the sd card, copy the folder back over and restore.
easy peasy

Thanks for the reply.
With out sounding to thick what I would do..
I dont have an sd card in my phone, so if I lost everything then how would I be able to get my details back on my phone?
Can I not just copy everything and put in in a folder on my computer, if then I lost all data I could then transfer it back to my phone from my computer
I did a superboot yesterday ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1577831 ) and when reading other topics about rooting they always tell you to back everything up...
Whats my best option?
Cheers
sorry im confused ? Are you using the One S now ?? or are you trying to back up files from an older phone to restore onto the One S ??
it doesnt matter if you dont have external sd (One S doesnt anyway) it will be backed up to the internal SD.
All you have to do is plug in USB and tranfer from old phone > PC > New phone

It is best to do a nandroidbackup. You can make a nandroidbackup in the recovery menu. When you have made this backup, you have copied everything on the phone as it was when you started the first time. To make a nandroidbackup you must have CWM (clockworkmod).

To back up full rom..like everything,as the post says above you would boot into recovery and back it up that way at the moment due to not having official clockworkmod..dont know if it is yet,but you can do that way.itll save everything just as you left it.
titanium back up will save apps and there data..
and can save the way you have saved your settings etc.
itll save your profile without needing to login.then click on options..then batch if its apps.or if its system data and apps choose that option.
beware though if you got 100 apps youll be there for a good ten minutes reinstalling lol.
(note--asop isnt around yet fully but dont restore system data from sense roms to asop and vice versa itll just mess your system up)
your external storage( will never be touched with relation to flashing roms etc.the only way it can happen is if your a complete numpty and select that option yourself.
best way to be honest is just play around with titanium youll get the hang of it

Thanks for the reply, when I go in to recovery it just starts the phone back up, what am I doing wrong, is there any chance you can give me the basic idiots guide on how to do this, dont want to lose all my stuff, if anything was to happen then I will be goosed..
when you go into CWM recovery and select backup, It just starts without confirmation.
It will save under a folder named 'clockwork' on your sd card, Inside that will be your nandroid backup, It consists of all apps, data, system, everything except firmware and radio. (which doesnt matter as you havent changed it)
if you every run into a problem that cannot be fixed, restoring the nandroid will put your phone back to the state it was in when you made it..
Titanium on the other hand, this backs up all apps and app data (game saves, login info ect) you mainly use this when changing ROM or doing a wipe. so that you dont have to install them all 1 by 1..
Only restore a nandroid when you run in to serious errors. NOT everytime you wipe / change ROM
Do you actually get into recovery?

Thanks for your patience, when I go in to Rom Manager I click on backup current rom, it tells me the date and time, I then click ok, the phone then restarts, when I look in manage and restore backups it's just blank??? I am using Rom Manager v5.0.0.6, is it better using a premium Rom Manager as I also have rom toolbox, when I click backup on this one it says that I must upgrade to be able to do this..

No mate far as im aware rom manager isnt supporting the s yet,the cwm had issues, youll need to switch off and boot into bootloader then choose recovery from there then into cwm then back it up.
switch off, hold volume then power till bootloader rocks up..choose recovery then your in clockworkmod then back up
+1 to that !! also, if you have root (i assume you do with having TiBackup) you can use quickboot - available on market for free, it will allow you to boot into bootloader, recovery, without having to do the button combo

Question about ClockworkMod Recovery and ICS Rom

I was suggested to flash an ICS ROM, so first I was wondering which one is best for beginners. I was previously using Andromeda.
Anyways, I am following the instructions for CyanogenMod9 but when i go into recovery mode and choose backup there is no choice that says "NAND Backup"....I just clicked backup is this something different. Please help...
I have some things on my phone that I would not want to lose
Before anything backup everything on your phone you don't wanna loose cuz you never know. There are many great roms around have fun flashing them. I personally recommend AOKP.

thanks, but was the backup I performed the proper one to do before flashing a new ROM??
It was, for the most part. The backup you perform (called a Nandroid Backup) makes a snapshot of the system configuration at the time you backed it up.
If you ever want to come back to where you were, just flash back to Andromeda and restore that backup.
If you're wanting a backup that will cross the Andromeda-ICS gap, though, you'll need something like Titanium Backup, as a Nandroid backup is specific to the configuration it was created in (i.e. you have to be in the same ROM to restore from that backup).
NOTE: --VERY IMPORTANT-- Nandroid backups DO NOT back up your pictures, music, documents, etc. These are separate items on the Internal SD card.
I would highly recommend that before you go any further that you plug your phone into your computer and copy everything that shows up on the internal SD card to a safe place. While you're at it, make a copy of your /efs folder.
thanks I made a backup of everything else...what was the efs folder? from it being unlocked?
anyways now I can proceed to wiping the data to flash the rom of my choice?

htc desire does not start after rom installation

Hello,
it's my first post on this forum so I am not sure, if I placed it in right location...
There is my problem :
I downloaded and tried to install Cool3D RunnyMede v7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250815)
on my Htc Desire. I just downloaded it, placed on SD and using clockwork mod selected install zip from SD and thats all.
Installation was succesfull, until reboot after firs reboot it doesn't load system at all. I have S-off so it stops loading on alphaRev screen.
Before setting new rom I've made SD format, so there is nothing left except this rom's zip file. What can I do is only on recovery or bootloader menu.
Can someone tell me what I've done wrong?
How to bring my phone back to live with this room or another?
Is it possible now to place files on SD if i only can turn on recovery menu?
using:
htc desire bravo
clockWorkMod 5.0.2.0
s-off AlphaRev
before that was Cayogenmod 7.2.0.1
Did you Factory Reset from CWM? You can't just load over the top of another ROM without doing this - this will however clear all user data (user apps and data for System and User apps - i.e. call history, sms history, level of Angry Birds!)
Hoping for you that you also did a backup with CWM - will allow you to restore the phone to the state you started.
FYI - You can also get the Pro version of Titanium Backup which it will allow you to restore apps and data (including system settings and wifi etc) from a CWM backup... makes changing ROMs painless
I've done factory reset.
When it comes to backup, there start funny problems, I've created it, but forgot to plase on PC copy of it before formatting SD so...
I dont have backup, otherwise there would not be problem and point to write in forum.

You can try to flash a different kernel and radio, could be that the ROM needed more space and the installation wasn;t complete.
Thank you for trying help me, but I already bring to life my phone.
Using another phone I transfer another rom to SD (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318370)
this one is almost same, installed it and it is working Sometimes lags, don't know why, but looks grate.
More over haven't noticed what differences are between this two roms

[Q] PLEASE Help

Hello everyone, for starters im a complete newb at rooting phones and have never before tonight so please excuse my ignorance. I just rooted my phone which went fine, downloaded titanium backup and backed up everything, and then moved a zip of m1 cm10 and gapps onto my ext sd card. then i followed a video on how to install these. i was running clockwork recovery and did a factory reset/clear. in the video, the next screen had an option for "choose zip from sd", all mine had was something like update from external so i clicked that and it brought up my sd card files, including the cm10 and gapps files. i clicked on them (i tried each more than once) and they both stgarted to install then said failed. Im literally here freaking out because none of the apps i downloaded to restore my stuff are on my phone anymore, and when i downloaded them from the play store they said i had not backed anything up. somebody please help me, im legitimately having a nervous breakdown because i lost everything and dont know what to do.
Ok first things first. What was the fail error that CWM produced? I dont understand what you mean by none of the apps you downloaded to restore your stuff are on the phone anymore. Where did they go? If you didnt delete them they should still be there. Did you boot up after the failed attempt, and are now at a factory state OS? Perhaps titanium isnt pointed to the correct location of the backups you made. Please provide more info.
Edit: Ok I misunderstood a point. The apps I take it are gone from the factory reset, but I still dont understand why the backup data cant be restored.
Sounds like CWM didn't flash. That sounds like stock recovery. Flash factory image via Odin, reroot, and reinstall CWM. Download an app called EZ Recovery from the market and follow the instructions. You will be fine.

Just a side note as far as using CWM goes:
I've noticed that with CWM, the backup file sizes are way too small. Hence a possible corrupted backup folder. TWRP seems to work better with our device as far as backups go.
It's always a good idea to check the size of a backup afterwards before proceeding with any risky procedures like low level flashing. Luckily there is always ODIN.
With my device backup sizes range between 2.0GB and 2.34GB.

You've got to remember that CWM backs up differently now. It backs up data separately in blobs in a different folder. So your backups in clockwork are naturally smaller. Also, I've heard nothing but bad things with TWRP on this device. I'd stay away from it and stick with non touch CWM.

When I open titanium backup and try to restore, it tells me no backups have been performed. Before trying to flash cm10, I moved the backup to my external sdcard and it is still there, yet I still can't restore it and when I try to do something with the files on my card it says no application can perform this task. Ive gotten my contacts back through tha app I backed them up on so I'm at a loss for why tb Isnt working.

Launch titanium and hit menu/preferences. From there you can change the backup location to wherever you moved it to and it should see them.
Also for your contacts... If you are planning on flashing roms do yourself a favor a migrate your contacts off your phone and on to Google. That way you just log back in to your Google account after a re flash and they are all resynced. Plus you can access them from anywhere at contacts.Google.com

Also, could someone tell me/point me to a good method of flashing M1 cm10 onto a us cellular gs3?

I agree 100%, the non-touch version of CWM works perfectly. I could care less about touch/non-touch/color of the app etc. ALL I care about is the capability to do a sucessful restore & CWM has never failed me for that.
I did a restore from it last night & it worked perfectly. The ONLY thing I have ever had to do after a CWM restore is clear data in GMAIL to get it to send.

[Q] Twrp nandroid backup successful but...

This is weird...I'm running cm10.1.2 using latest version of TWRP
So, today I made a nandroid backup. I choose to backup everything- cache, system, recovery, boot, data and I always choose to enable compression and I do not skip generate md5.
Well everything appears to be successful and it shows backup successful once it's done but the process is taking 200 seconds, seems faster than normal.
I go to look in esfile explorer to make sure it worked and it's not there. Ok, so I make another one...same thing. I looked everywhere and I can clearly see that I have the same amount of space in storage as I did before making those two full nandroids.
I don't know what's going on. Twrp says successful but there's no b/u
Any ideas?
