[Q] Modded alternative to official Youtube app? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I wanted to ask if anyone here is using an alternate youtube app or a modded one? There were a couple I did try from xda but they dont work properly so I'm guessing not compatible with KitKat.
I was looking specifically for the feature to download the videos in HD (Trailers/Lectures) and obviously full HD playback.
Anyone?
EDIT: Oh and Tubemate does not work :/ parsing error...

Did you try og you tube?

I found this a while back on here, can't seem to find it now though. https://www.dropbox.com/s/80ek7unab8mt02s/dentex.youtube.downloader_v3.0_BETA-3.apk It piggybacks on the official YouTube and works through the share option. When you find a video you want to download, hit the three dot overflow button under the video. Share options come up, scroll to the bottom til you see YouTube donwloader. I've used this for a while and its worked through multiple app updates.

SuperTube
Check out SuperTube .... nice theme, you can choose the resolution, screen off playback & floating video window

This used to be a great app, but it doesn't download the videos as the OP asked for, it's no longer in the Play Store, and some videos won't work with it (not just for me either, check the XDA thread). I'd advise against this app. Viral is a good alternative for a player that doesn't download, albeit not as good as SuperTube was.

[Q] Android App to download Videos (not just You Tube)!!

Can anyone please let me know if there is any app to download videos from any site (not just You Tube)?
I want to download videos (generally flash videos) from any website.
I searched on net and market but there are apps that download videos from You Tube but not from any other site.
i dont think thats possible on galaxy 3.. until full flash support is up..
Thanks for the reply rudolf895 but I think flash is only needed to play the videos not to download them. And also, if there are apps that download videos from You Tube, then I dont think there is any problem in coding an app that will support any website (not just You Tube)?
The app should be that: The User just need to enter the url from which you want to download the video and app should do the rest.
Please let me know your thoughs on this.

Use "Save Video plugin for Internet Explorer". It allows you convert videos during downloading. Just select Convert>Devices>Droid before download videos.
Every app I've tried that says that you just share the link with the app, and then it will download the video, fails to do so. When the link is shared, the app then reports that there is no video in the link. I'm at a loss. I don't wanna download on my laptop and trans over to droid device, that defeats the purpose of using the droid device. If i wanted to use the laptop all the time i wouldn't have got a tablet.
Use bytetornado, it's working!
I found this:
http://www.appszoom.com/android_applications/media_and_video/web-video-downloader_blftq.html
It's not free. But it does work about 50% of the time...
I'm sorry. I have to take back my last post. It turns out that web video downloader is no longer available on the play store. Meaning you'll have to get it elsewhere. And even then it still has a very low success rate. I'm currently trying to download and it keeps crashing. I'm disgusted. Why isn't there an android app similar to internet download manager for windows? Something that captures streaming video?
there are 2 that I have found

Not sure if you are still looking but there are 2 apps that I have found. One is dowloadr...not great and crashes a fair bit but could be the user not the program! the best one imo is video catcher....there is a free demo version with almost full capability or for a dollar you can upgrade and download many vids simultaniosly... basically with videocatcher if you can play it on your screen it can download it.... both in the store

firefox for android will do the work for you..
just add the flash video downloader add-on..

No app worked.
I used opera and adm download manager.
In opera, type about:cache and search for the right file by clicking on preview.
A dialogue box will allow you to open the link with adm.
Start the download with adm.
I had to search a bit for the video file because there are sometimes no extensions and you don't know which site is really hosting the video.
You may consider deleting previous caches in settings to avoid this problem.

Try TubeMate for YouTube videos.......It's against google policy to download videos and hence this app is no longer available on the market...

Dude if you really have the video URL you can download it in any browser. The content you're after is typically one of several components of a web page; the URL you have is either for the surrounding web page, or perhaps for the swf player (the active element that chromes your video stream and provides limited interactivity with the Flash server).
What you actually need is an app to parse the obfuscated video URL from the page source--and to perform authentication if the video is hosted on an RTMP server. In other words, a YouTube downloader extension is not as easily repurposed as you imagine.
For the (GUI-dependent) majority, just using a downloader that can perform RTMP handshaking is non-trivial. That said, RTMPDump binaries have been compiled for Android--give it a try and let us know how it works out.

Forcing youtube app to play 720p

It looks like the HQ mode in youtube app is actually 480p.
Anybody knows of a way to coerce youtube app to play 720p in HQ mode?
Before trolls start yelling that 720p on 800x480 will not look different than 480p, let me tell you - IT DOES, BIG TIME. Huge difference. Easiest way to watch youtube in 720p right now is to use "jetvd" app, but it's not as well designed as youtube. Hence the question.

''Sorry...currently no option to play HD by default and there never has been. The "playback settings" in your account settings currently only pertain to either 360p or 480p videos.''
There is a whole thread about it here.
Yep, but that thread didn't go anywhere.
I'm just wondering since jetvd is able to pull videos in 720p, perhaps there's a way to hack youtube app to pull in that quality as well.
Although jetvd uses the stock video player app to play them.. maybe youtube app doesn't have capability for anything above 480p..
ohh nice. i never used that app. just played some youtube videos over the mhl adapter.. very nice! i dont see anything wrong with the jetvd myself.
Why can't I see the jetvd pro version? They took it out off the market? ?

Go to www.jetvd.com on your phone. Click the Download button at the bottom of the screen. Then click the red Download button at the bottom of that screen to download JetVD Plus! The dev is giving it away free now, apparently.
Yes is a huge diference between youtube quality and jetdv 720p
Thanks im download from your link

jetVD is awesome, but it's not perfect.
In youtube app you can see your subscriptions, your channel, the design is nicer.. you can watch video and see comments at the same time, plus post them.
JetVD is only for watching in HD really. And search isn't as nice - there are no "related" videos, etc.
In a perfect world, there would be a hack for youtube app to play 720p. That'd be an end-all solution.
works good for now thanks for the tip!!!

well you can use the stock web browser and type about:useragent into the adress bar setting the user agent to desktop and then access the full site. and i just downloaded jet vd and it has related videos. i dont care much for that other stuff though.

What's the best YouTube downloading app?

I really liked JetVD but it was freezing up my Evo 3D while downloading any YouTube files (the notification bar specifically) and I'm currently using TubeMate.
Are there any others I'm missing?

Yea, that's what I'm using right now.
TubeMate works perfectly for me, but if you insist, there are many other downloading out there in the Market.
But take a look at this, its a modified youtube with download capabilities. Someone add the download button in share video. (I do not own this app, credit goes to the dev I don't know who) uploaded.to/file/7yz54fcy

[Q] How do I download Youtube videos ?

I used to have the initial MX player and was able to use it alongside the Youtube downloader to download and then later watch Youtube videos when I had no signal (which happens alot)
Then they redid the MX player and suddenly I can't download anything to it, I can play the stuff I had previously downloaded fine; I can even delete stuff from that past list. But I can't add new stuff to it.
What am I doing wrong here? I find it hard to believe that they'd update the MX player and make it worse/uunusable. I've sent request after request to the app developers but have heard nothing back. If anyone has anyanswers ir suggestions I'd be really greatful
Thanks
I think downloading youtube videos is not enterily legal, many app got removed from google play because of that.
m.tubemate.net
Out of scope of this app IMHO, for download YT videos use this app: YouTube Downloader.
MX Player itself has nothing to do with downloading anything. MX merely just plays whatever is given to it. Downloading YouTube videos is of questionnable legality, so we'll not discuss it further here. If you have problems with whatever app is doing that, you should talk to them.
I use two workarounds. You may try one if you like.
1. Change youtube to youtubepaw.com, for example, https://www.youtubepaw.com/the-link-of-video.
2. Try using this free YouTube downloader. It's workable on both desktop and mobile.

How to enable YouTube playback in background ?

Coming from an iPhone 7 Plus, I used the feature of YouTube playing in the background on a daily basis.
On Android I start playing a news clip or song then tab out to my web browser or stop watch, or any other app, and the media goes off.
How do I keep YouTube playing the background ?
The only way on YouTube app is by having YouTube Red subscription. It's a feature for red on Android. Others could point something out but from what I've checked and seen when using YouTube is by YouTube Red.

Not sure that its possible without root and xposed. Xposed hasn't been updated to work with Nougat yet though and that could still be some time away unfortunately. Might just have to live with it as is for the time being.
Thanks for the replies. I recall on previous Android phones that are rooted I used that Xposed module. But Xposed isn't compatible with Android N and the S8+ is locked down no root anyways for me.
Dang, that's unfortunate. YouTube Red might be your best bet then. Depends on how much you want it and whether you're willing to pay a monthly subscription to get it I suppose.
Sometimes I use the multi window feature to watch YouTube videos while using another app. It is a bit of a pain though if you just want audio as the minimum window size is still 1/3 of the screen.
I've tried a few apps that claim to play YouTube videos in the background but none of them worked very well.
There a app call OG YouTube somewhere in xda that have playback.
Try swapping top corning down to make the screen smaller. You can still hear and see the video and also move the smaller screen anywhere you want.
Use Firefox browser. It let's you play YouTube in background or screen off

Can you explain how it works on iOS? It seems crazy to me that YouTube requires you to pay a monthly subscription fee for background play on Android, but offers it for free on iOS.
If you mean playing within a web browser, and then going to another tab of the browser, I think Firefox for Android allows you to do that. If, instead, you mean the YouTube app itself, then you need YouTube red or some other (probably unsanctioned) method.

On my iPhone 7 Plus, I was using some program called 'ProTube' on stock iOS, not jailbreak or anything;
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/protube-for-youtube/id931201696?mt=8
I could start a video, and then move to do something else, and it would remain playing in the background until I manually closed it down. I get so used to it, and really liked it, now it's a shock not to have something like it on Android.

Yep you have to download the APK. They stopped support so the latest APK would be the last one you can use.
So you have to search XDA as the website took down the download links for OGYoutube.
The app still works without problems and should be a while until YouTube updates something to make it obsolete.
The lat update is OGYoutube 3.5.
Only thing is that you won't have the crop to fit. If in case you used it.

I couldn't get it to work at first either. Try going to options in Firefox and check "Request desktop site". After doing that I was able to return to the home screen with the audio still playing in the background. It seems to work with the screen off as well! :good:
Go to Youtube app, play video then turn off screen with the power button (just a click). Video will pause. Click on power button again and youll see time on top. Swipe the time left or right and youll see the youtube play button . Click play and it should work. It will not work any other way if you want to text or call or be on your phone but it will if you want to hear music and conserve battery. This is on my S8+ .....PS make sure your Pandora or any other music app is off.
