[Q] Recommendation for "no-name" cell phone - General Questions and Answers

G'day
Yesterday, my SG4 I9505 fell down a flight of stairs and broken into sizable pieces. I went on to look for a new phone that might be a good match for my "old" broken one. Since I currently live in Switzerland, I'd like to have a recommendation for a phone which matches the LTE 4G frequency used by the providers here, though I'm frequently traveling to the USA and sometimes to Asia (though I normally just buy a replacement phone for the duration). While searching through the net, I eventually hit alibaba.com and browsed through the manufacturers there, in hope to find a cool combination of hardware for my new replacement phone. What I would really like is the following (could be more or more specific, once helpful people reply):
A really fast CPU (low power consumption). Of course, the word good is very unspecific here.
3000+ up to 4000mAh battery
A brilliant 1080p display with vivid colors, with good contrast ratio
Fast and accurate GPS, a-GPS
GSM, 3G, 4G, LTE with the according frequency bands necessary to connect to various providers in Europe, mainly Switzerland. Why can't we have programmable chips which adapt their frequency for the cell connectivity? I currently have 100Mbit/s download and 10Mbit/s upload, so I'd like to continue using this as my main mobile Internet access
Rootable Android (easily upgradeable to newest versions)
Advanced audio chip
Dual SIM
Moderately good lens (I very much prefer lower MPixels but enhanced IS and really working in low-light given the physical constraints)
All the goodies of the normally used SoC CPUs
Aluminium alloy
2-4GB RAM
At least 32GB space
Wifi
Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer, temperature, humidity, gesture
Has anybody tested any of these hundreds of new Chinese and Korean mobile phones or has some experience with no-brand phones?

Any Suggestions Dual SIM - Android 2.3 or WM7/WM7.5

Greetings
I am on the lookout for any DUAL SIM Android 2.3.X or WM7/WM7.5 mobile with following features.
+ screen size 4.0" +
+ Capacitive multi-touch screen with bright resolution
+ atleast 1 SIM should have 3/3.5G/WCDMA. Other SIM may be regular Quad Band GSM
+ Quad band - 850/900/1800/1900MHZ and WCDMA - 900/2100MHz
+ WiFI / Bluetooth
+ Gravity / Light sensor / Compass
+ dual-core processor
+ inbuilt memory preferably over 512mb expandable to 32 GB
+ GPS / AGPS latest generation
+ Camera with 5MP and above and support video recording. Front camera for video calling can be lower resolution
+ FM Radio with built in antenna (not requiring headphone to listen to FM)
+ 3D Graphics Acceleration Chipset
I know the requirements look quite odd, but I feel that the mobiles should have the above features and it would work quite well

Wowser, thats quite a list but i doubt you will find any reputable device with those specs and dual sim. Only grey imports (copies) tend to have dual sim, but i wouldnt touch them. Best chance is to search ebay.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I know and feel its high time top companies roll out Dual SIM Mobiles. When you have multiple networks, multiple numbers, it becomes quite easy to carry a single mobile rather than 2. Now a days the mobile is becoming a tool to access internet usually for emails / quick browsing, take say quick snaps if you are traveling (rather than carry a digital camera), a GPS Device, Compass etc... so one device has multiple functions works really well for people like me, who dont want say a camera with 100s of features, etc.. dont like to carry 2 mobiles. Any other way I could use 2 SIMs on a Single SIM Mobile?

I have seen a dual sim adaptor that worked on some much older phones, but as far as i know they are not supported on newer smart phones. There was also the issue that the adaptor was quite bulky and therefore you couldnt get the battery cover back on.
Think you might be chasing a ghost train here, sorry buddy
Credit to me.. lol.. go to Google and type in (without quotes of course)" lightinthebox.com" when you there type in dual sim or just find an android phone and see a list of dual sim card phones.

Lol, yh there are some there Just be careful buying "unknown" devices, things to consider are build quality, hardware, will device work on your carrier.
Good luck.
Lol..well the site was provided now he can research what he wants and could chat with a customer rep...ask about anything..I've had people at my job who bought different Ipads and phones and they work good..till this day haven't had problems...hope that helps..let us know what your interested phone is...

well i have heard a lot about simore dual sim adapter not sure of real life examples but many posts.
really there is no REAL Dual SIM Adapter. 2 SIMs running in standby mode like the ones offered on "clone" phones or the DUAL SIMs launched by a few standard companies. But for the extra SIM they charge the moon.
Hope that I get a Dual SIM Phone like the specs I want... my search is still on
This one fits most of the profile. I have Lenovo A60 that is based on same processor, and it's excellent.

My experience with different Galaxy S models

I want to share some experiences I have with the Galaxy S devices. It's a bit late to post this perhaps, old news even, since Galaxy S is no longer new and is only single core, but there are a few features that give these phones excellent value, especially for those who want to buy a phone out of contract and don't want to pay too much:
-Used ones can go for around $150, less if lucky
-Very easy and cheap to unlock
-Generally good battery life that can last whole day
-AMOLED screen, viewable under sunlight
-Good build quality (Gorilla glass)
-5MP camera takes decent pictures and 720p video with adequate lighting (most variants don't have LED flash)
-Decent graphic card (200 MHz PowerVR SGX 540) can handle all recent 3D games (ie. RipTide & Asphalt 6)
-Easy to root and has great developing community (CyanogenMod supports)
-Support "ODIN", easy flashing factory images in Download mode, making them very difficult to brick
-Used Wolfson DAC which yields great audio quality, which is not featured in the S II and Note
The Galaxy S variants I've owned are: S 4G (T-Mobile), Vibrant (T-Mobile), Captivate (ATT), Nexus S (T-Mobile). I have unlocked, rooted and flash roms on all of them. I also had the Galaxy SII and Note (International).
Overall impressions:
Nexus S: This has to be the most desired of the lot, best screen, best performance, latest OTA update directly from Google and has lots of developers for it. It has LED flash which most of the other variants don't. It also support Near Field Communications. However, it is not my favorite version.
Downfalls:
-no microSD card slot, only 16GB internal
-due to its curved shape, with a case included it can feel bulkier than other Galaxy S variants with flat body
Vibrant: This is my favorite of the lot, simply because it works on both T-Mo and ATT 3G, this is rare for an Android device this cheap. It's not pentaband however (doesn't support ATT 850mhz). It has internal 16GB storage and microSD expansion. Cyanogen support and lots of custom roms.
Downfalls:
-Needs GPS fix patch for custom roms, GPS lock time is a few seconds slower and less precise than other variants.
-(correct me if I'm wrong) It doesn't yet have the official T-Mobile 'WiFi Calling' app that the Galaxy S 4G has, but there is works on a custom version. IMO, you can just use GrooVe IP instead.
-No front face camera (I think there is a rare few Vibrants that does have it)
Captivate (ATT version): This device is the nicest looking Galaxy S I think, due to its slanted design. It feels just a tiny bit slower than the rest to me, I could be wrong, but it just feels that way. Like the Vibrant, it has Cyanogen supports and lots of developers, 16GB internal storage + microSD expansion. No front face camera unlike the Captivate Glide and Sprint's Epic 4G though.
Galaxy S 4G: There is a mix of good and bad for this device. It has good data speed (10Mbps+) as long as you live in a good T-Mobile coverage area, which also results in good tethering experience. It includes the app "WiFi Calling" so you won't use up minutes. Front face camera included.
Downfall:
-Lacks internal storage for users, needs to have microSD card. That also results in apps installed to microSD card by default, this can interfere with functions of some apps. Not sure if stock roms can do this, but you can always manually move the apps to internal storage, sometimes its a must for apps to autostart and for some app's widgets to show up in the widgets selection menu.
-Much less developers available, no CyanogenMod support. Only until now there is some work on porting CM7. With that said, the available Valhalla rom makes this device blazing fast, but also no longer worked on by its original developers.
More info:
Performance:
I'm not basing so much on synthetic benchmarks, but regular usage. The Nexus S seems the quickest and I achieved ~2500points for Quadrant. Aside from that all of devices I've used are on par, they all can play 3D games smoothly. They are all kind of slow with stock rom, but once you put in CyanogenMod7 or 9, they're blazing. In fact, I feel these devices with CM7 are more responsive than stock Galaxy S II and Note (in term of general navigation, of course newer phones are faster overall).
The Vibrant gets low Quadrant score, around 1500, but it seems just as fast as other ones. I feel the Captivate is slowest of the lots, but the difference is so small it doesn't matter. The key here is to flash custom roms.
Data speed:
The Vibrant is the best in term of value, it's not fast, but supports both 1700 and 1900 bands, so can work on both T-Mobile and ATT 3G networks, it does not support the newer ATT 850 band however.
S 4G: theoretical 21Mbps, I've achieved over 10Mbps
Vibrant: can get up to 6Mbps with good signal, generally stays around 2-3Mbps
Nexus S: theoretical 7.2Mbps, about same with Vibrant
Captivate: theoretical 7.2Mbps, but ATT HSPA network is generally slower than T-Mobile imo, it all depends on the area of coverage though
Galaxy S II (T-Mo): theoretical 42Mbps, I've achieved 24Mbps
Also note that with T-Mobile devices, I've been able to tether freely. I know that some people with the $79.99 plans have had text message from T-Mobile that warns tethering is not included with their plan.
GPS location fix:
These devices work pretty well as GPS navigator since their AMOLED screen remains viewable outdoor. They all generally takes around 6-10 secs to get a fix outdoor. The Captivate and Vibrant using custom roms required GPS fix patches. I have the most trouble getting location fix with the Vibrant which can take longer than 10 seconds. I've lost GPS signal on the highway with the S 4G with dark clouds overhead. These devices while does a good job, are not reliable as devices that include both GPS and GLONASS support, such as XPeria variants and the Galaxy Note, these can get really fast location fix and rarely lose signal.
Screen: The Nexus S has best screen quality than the rest of American carrier-locked variants, which all has 'blue tint' to them, although just as crisp details. However, if you have CyanogenMod9 installed, you can change the color temperature of the devices to warmer to match the Nexus S. There are no CM9 for the S 4G currently however.
Final:
If I have a final say about the Galaxy S model, is simply that it has Wolfson DAC, that is a big deal for audiophiles like me. The SII and Note just doesn't sound as good, regardless if they are more powerful devices. With that said, I recently got an XPeria Play which also has some excellent quality too, so XPeria devices might worth looking at if audio fidelity is your concerns.
Good Job.
I think Note is very big.
What Do you think the performance in games with Sony?
Cheers.
The Adreno 205 in the Play vs the SGX540 in the Galaxy are about the same performance, maybe the later edging by a bit. But the Play has a slide out gamepad which is unbeatable for gaming. However it also has terrible screen. And you need to unlock the boot loader to flash custom rom, and its not as easy if you don't have the international version. It is going too get official ICS release soon though.
I'm not sure if PS3 contoller also work with Gingerbread for the Galaxy devices, but the iControlPad can work with all apps just like the Play gamepad (using iCade mode and pairing with Bluez IME).
The Note international is the best device I've own by the time of its release, I think the SIII will take it to another level though. But the Note still has Wacom pen support which is useful.

Yes it has a small red led that appears to flash on messages and battery status.
battery life- just got 25hours normally use with WIFI/ data on continuously.GPS seems slow like all chinese phones. 6 inch screen but soft buttons seem to takes up too much room really although you can hide them.Clear speakers. Will continue to post as I test
Recharge 2 hours and 15 minutes on stock charger
Antutu reports 27253 - although with th recent relevations of manufacturers tweeking Antutu I wouldn't be suprised if this is inaccurate. As rear camera is reported as 18.2 mp!
Hope to read your review soon

can report battery life seems to have improved, now at 50% when at this point it had run out. Also GPS is much better (after initial slow start) than my Cubot A6589 or my wifes M6589.
Picks up wifi straight away no issues.
have also noticed that this model supports wifi updates. Hopefully this mean no more messing about with SP tools etc.Still deciding weather to root yet,
I can confirm

Fake T200? now there is a thing...chinese manufacturers faking chinese phones! Mind you Thl is very popular in china with apparently over 300 stores.
Got mine from Thl: www.thlmobilestore.com
I have also used Geekbuying (geekbuying.com) as well, never had a problem with what they have sold me, sites a bit inaccurate though (fake Antutu screen shots etc) but thats the norm for chinese sites in my experience, so you have to do your research.

Suggest the T100 then basically the same except 5 inch screen.
Benchmark 41.8 in Epic Citadel at 1920x1080 performance level = "High Quality"

I am also in this website to buy THL T100S.
I received the ThL T200 a few days ago and I have been using it as my main phone. The T200 is a pleasure to use. It has a six inch screen and coming from my previous cubot A6589 (5.7 inch) it does seem much bigger in the hand. however I did own a N9776 and of course I could be getting used to big phones. i'm getting on a bit in years, and I find that smaller screens seem too small for me without my reading glasses!
The design of the T200 follows a common design format for Chinese phones with its black or white back cover and crome trim. The left and right boarder is about 3 mm wide with the usual wider top and bottom boarders.Ear phone jack and micro USB is unusually set into the top edge, In most phones the bottom boader contains the home button etc, but the T200 follows a tablet layout with soft keys taking up the bottom of the screen. You can hide it though so you can free up real estate on the main screen.Power button is on the left with the volume rocker on the right of the phone. The top boarde contains the sensors as usual with a small red LED notification light which illuminates on messgaes, missed calls etc and when requiring or when being charged. chaging to green when sufficient battery power is there.Like the T100S when the disply is off the display blends with surrounding bezels.
The display is a very good 1930 x 1080 full HD resolution. Colour seems good as is brightness of the display. Like the T100S it has a density of 441 pixels per inch, so the screen is sharp and clear. Its not the best Ive seen but at this price it seems a bargin.
The MTK6592 is an octo-core A7 at 1.7 Ghz which certainly moves along at a good pace. I got over 27000 on Antutu although with the recent issues with manufacturers either doctoring read outs or making the OS recognise when Antutu is running, this might be a little misleading but it is certainly in line with other scores Ive seen out there.
For Epic Citadel, the T200 consistently managed 41.8 frames per second (fps) on the High Quality setting. its also quite good considering the GPU is the Mali-450 which isn't the best out there but again I feel one has to take into account the price difference.
I haven't tested the CPU yet but Gary Sims on android Authority has tested the T100S
http://www.androidauthority.com/octa-core-thl-t100s-review-327578/
The battery is a 2500 mAh which for me has given about 1 day 12 hours of normal use (WIFI and data continuously on, phones, bit of film watching and games)so far although it might need some more bedding in. Like the T100S it has a option to limit CPU activity to lengthen battery life. tried both (one charge with it on and one off) and it doesn't seem to make much difference.
2GB RAM + 32GB ROM (translates as 5.77GB internal storage and 22.07GB phone storage
The camera is a 13 mp back camera and the front is 8 mp. Its good but I have seen better, but again you get what you pay for and for general use both cameras are more than adequate.
The phone has OTG which works straight out of the box mounting the drive instantaneously. It also has NFC I haven;t tested this but if it is like its twin the T100S then it should work well.
Overall then the THL T200 is a very good phone in my opinion for the price. It has its weak points but considering the price differential I feel its worthy of consideration.
Thanks for the review. I am still deciding whether to get this phone or Zopo 990+

Yes Im in the UK so could go for the slightly cheaper option
I got mine in today, been playing around a bit, very nice new toy, I'm impressed with the performance so far.
For those who are interested: It seems to have a form of CWM recovery mode, just keep volume-up pressed while switching the phone on. The power button works as a back button, the vol-up as the 'confirm' button and the vol-down scrolls the menu.
Options available are:
Reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from sdcard
apply update from cache
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
backup user data
restore user data

GPS performance exynos vs snapdragon

just got my s21 U here in the uk...
Safe to say that the gps performance is so far off what i would expect from a 1k plus phone. just coming from the oppo find x2 pro which has the snapdragon and the time for first fix is almost instant where the S21 U takes 10 to 15 seconds??
I know qualcomm supports nearly every GPS tech out there, whats the performance for anyone in the states? yet another reason why UK users should pay less for the phone if it has exynos
Exynos 2100 supports: GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, NAVIC
The experts say the Galileo service is the best as the newest technology and provides better accuracy. But all of the above provide maximum cover very well. The Snapdragon supports the same set and although they are different chips sets they use the same body and antennas so there is no difference in the implementation. My tests of the UK Ultra was impressive and showed the device using multiple GPS services to improve accuracy. There does not appear to be any reason that one would be better than the other.
Also, the recent battery test article posted in another thread shows the Exynos having better battery life so that's a win for us.

Also, the recent battery test article posted in another thread shows the Exynos having better battery life so that's a win for us.

snapdragon 888 suport dual gps frequency (L1 & L5) Which may explain why in the same device GPS reception is better with another processor.
Does Exynos 2100 support dual gps frequency too?
Yes. Just used GPSTest and connects using L1 and L5 on GPS.
I have a new s21 fe with Exynos 2100 and no L5 for me.
and my gps not working good as my pixel 6 at the same position in the car.
after a lot of research i noticed (in the help of gpstest app) that my pixel as both L1 and L5 and my s21 fe support only L1.
