How to power on a phone with a broken power button? - General Questions and Answers

My LG G2's power button and volume rockers appear to have stopped working. My phone is off and USB debugging is off. Is there any way I can power my phone on? Thanks!

The problem is that my phone is off! And I can't turn it on without using the power button it seems.

Is it the button itself that is broken or the functionality of the electronics? I once had to replace the physical button after the guts had fallen out of it. Got to the last step of rooting my phone, went to press that rocker button and ...nothing. I always used the virtual, on screen button for photos, so I never even realized that it was dead. They can usually find them somewhere online

I think it is the electronics because at one point my power button/volume buttons were randomly getting pressed without my input. But, I really don't know for sure.

All phones have a recovery mode which can be accessed by pressing volume up or down (only one) while inserting the USB cable. This powers on the phone for download mode allowing you to restore software.
As mentioned best method is to repair the faulty button but I would try restoring STOCK image/rom first.

Possible solution
Hope that this trick could help someone.
Situation:
- broken power button
- lg g2 off
- WORKING volume button
After lots of tries to power on that damned phone something happens:
1) Charge g2 until 100%.
2) Hold both volume button (UP AND DOWN) and insert power supply
3) be ready to disconnect the power supply immediatly when the lg logo appears
4) disconnect charger (Screen will goes off) keep holding volume button
5) reinsert power supply and when screen goes on release and rehold again both volume button.
And... Magically lg g2 starts!
I really don't know why this procedure works but i currently use this trick to power on the device when accidentally my lg goes to 0% -.-'
Some advice:
Before doing all this combination i've tried holding both volume button when the device was off.. For some reason the red led (charging color) flashed five times then this trick works. Don't know if was just a coincidence. But triying can't do any damage!
So... HOLD FOR MORE TIME YOU CAN THOSE ****** BUTTON.
And pray.
Hope that this will help someone

this worked for me. although I found that I did not have to reinsert the power supply nor did I have to rehold both volume buttons again at the end.
so 5) when screen comes on, release the two volume buttons.

Install Volume unlock, it'll make your volume button unlock the screen

Use ADB Commands to first connect your phone with your pc using a terminal and then use some other adb commands to power it on.
Google for some ADB commands.
Hit thanks

Lg g2 D802 here, non-responding power button. I power on my Phone just by plugging in the power cable and pulling it out when the logo appears. Nothing else. Screen on/off by knock-on funktion.

Quick explanation
Ok so i had the bootloop problem with my Infuse , i fixed it by opening my phone and playing with the power button hardware.
I accidently broke the power button , I looked for hours for a way to turn on my phone with out a power button with no success until i found tried this:
TUTORIAL STARTS HERE
1. Enter Download mode by holding both volume rockers and inserting a USB cable while still holding
2. Get to the screen that asks you if continue with Download Mode or not.
3. Remove USB cable and click the 2nd option.
4. Phone will restart and that's how you turn on a phone with no power button.

I think only Samsung uses "Download Mode". LG probably has Fastboot like most other Android devices (Vol-Dn + Pwr). But you can try it - it won't hurt.
EDIT: Finally got an LG device. It does indeed have Download mode (and no Fastboot...Vol-Dn+Pwr brings me to a scaled back bootloader). Don't know if if asks to continue or not, but Download Mode doesn't hurt the phone unless you are potentially flashing software with it.
iTs working!! on Motorola Razr xt910
Android 2.2 and is working! After the phone turn on I was downloaded the app pwr bottom to volume key! And that is all okkk!
But take care after press (down and up) if you press up Inside tthe download mode this mean select! And on my first time I have take the recovery mode! xD
Good loooook!

Hello mate!!! Thanks for the post but i have problems here. First of all my phone (Galaxy Wonder) goes into download mode by pressing volume down + home btn + power button, so i though instead of the volume rockets i had to press volume down + power button and then usb cable. It worked. Got into download mode!!! Then i remove the cable, wait a few seconds and then press down to cancel and restart. Then it happens that the screen shows a grey battery, then it fades out and back in for twice. Then the phone just turns off. Battery is charged! What could be the problem? (I have to say i just completely removed the power button from the motherboard, but keeping the metal things that were around it still soldered on the motherboards.
Any guess???
Thanks a lot

[Q] HTC one S wont start, no blinking, no led

Hi guys !
My HTC One S died yesterday just before going to bed.
It was 10% battery, I used it for 10-15mn and it went down to 3% and then 1% and shut down just before I plug it to the wall charger.
I let it there for 5mn and tried to power it on but nothing happened. I noticed that the charging led was not even working.
I let it overnight charging and this morning, still nothing. I tried to enter bootloader with power+volume down, nothing happen
This morning, I tried :
- 2 hours usb charging, not detected by the computer, no led, won't start even in bootloader
- 2 hours wall charger charging. Still no led, won't start
Any idea on what to try ?

Ok, simulated battery pull.
hold the phone under bright light (sensor see's the light and allows to power on, something about a feature to prevent resetting while the phone is in your pocket). press power button, press and hold power button if that doesn't work.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe it is locked up, and really has been charging. Press and hold power button for 10 seconds.
Some have had success pulling the sim card, and then pressing the power button. Then when it turns on reinserting sim card.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Factory Reset option: would erase phone storage though.
If you can’t turn HTC One S on or access settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the hardware buttons on HTC One S.
Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then press and hold the POWER button.
Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the POWER and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
Press VOLUME DOWN to select FACTORY RESET, and then press the POWER button.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Others have switched to trying to charge it connected to USB port and have it suddenly come back to life after a while.
Thanks for the answer

[Q] button combination to force a shutdown

I must be searching for the wrong things. What is the button combination to force a shutdown on the Note Pro? Thanks.

Press and hold:
Power only - power off
Power + vol up - recovery
Power + vol dn - download mode.
Is this what you are needing?

Those were what I was expecting. But the power+vol combinations aren't doing anything on mine. It is a Verizon LTE version, but I wouldn't think that would make a difference?
They should work . . . best way IMO is to just do a shutdown from within the OS, then while the tablet's off press and hold a vol/home combo prior to pressing and holding the power button. Once the model number splash screen appears let go of power first while holding the other two . . hold the other two for a second or so and then let go.

Ok, this is really silly, but I don't find any way from the Note Pro's OS to do a power down, other than the popup from holding the power button?
(Sorry, bit of background, this all started from a problem that my power button was only working to wake the tablet, but after that, had no effect whatsoever. After mucho playing, for no apparent reason, finally the popup menu came up, I did a restart, and it's been 100% since than. But it has left me worried how to do a shutdown if the power button isn't working. No pulling the batteries on these things.)

Correct, when booted into android OS a momentary holding of the power button will bring up the power menu one option within which will be to power off. This is typical of many android devices.
Are you sure your power button is operating normally?
I have read elsewhere of a user having issue with his power button not feeling right (less travel than anticipated without much tactile feedback when depressed indicating possible defect).
I would like to add for clarity that there is no force shutdown via hardware button, only force reboot. Holding power down for several seconds will force a full reboot. Holding it down briefly to get the power menu gets the power off option in the menu to fully turn the tablet off. If your tablet reboots after this option is chosen then something is wrong.

No, because after returning to working fine yesterday it is acting up again. Not a hardware problem - if the tablet is off, the button will always work to wake it up. But once again, it is now not being responded to when the tablet is awake - either a quick push, a long push, or in combination with the other buttons.
It seems like this is a software problem, either driver or app, since mechanically the button works every time to wake up the tablet. And, of course, I can't do a shutdown or reboot to see if that clears it, because its not responding to the power button. Can't remap the power button because no root available on the Verizon LTE model. Frustrating.
eric
I would take it back to Verizon. IMO software shouldn't interfere with a long depress forcing a reboot. That function is fundamental. This still sounds to me like a possible hardware issue where a long press is not identified as such (intermittent connection in the button).

But a short press also doesn't work when the tablet is on, but does work when the tablet is off. But then it clears up, and always works properly for awhile.
Unfortunately, unlike phones, taking out the battery isn't an alternative option...
I dunno what to tell you. Without root I don't see how any software you have installed on the tablet would have changed anything, and without the ability to get into download mode I'm not sure there's a way for you to do a factory reset that will fix the issue (if it is indeed a software one). I hope someone else chimes in that can help. My suggestion to take it in to Verizon still stands though.
Good luck!

Cannot power on phone

So before, my power button gave me issues where it required substantial force to be used in order to get any response. Now all of a sudden, the fingerprint sensor went out as well as the power button itself. When attempting to do a hard reset to correct the problem, the phone won't turn on anymore. So it would seem that the power button no longer works and now I cannot turn on my phone . I've attempted to go into download mode or even the bootloader with little to no luck at all.
Does anyone have an alternative way to power on the phone so I can attempt to backup my data?

This took a lot of trial and error with various button combinations, but I think I found a solution that works.
You must use the wall charger and cord. That's what I used.
1. Press and hold the volume up and down button at the same time.
2. Plug in the wall charger to the charging port.
3. You will see the lg logo on your phone.
4 Right when you see the lg logo unplug the charger from the phone.
5. Continue holding the volume up and down button.
6. LG logo will go away and then come back and your phone should boot.
5. Release the volume up and down button when it starts to boot.
Note: If you don't pull the power cord right when you see the lg logo, it will go into charging mode.
I was able to successfully boot my phone from a powered off state this way 3 times with no problem.
Once you get it booted, you could download an app from the play store to remap a volume button to be a power button as a temporary solution.

Nexus 5 Hard Brick situation

My Nexus 5 was drained off battery and was not taking charging suddenly. I entered the hard reset mode( power+volume down button) and accidently did a "restart bootloader". Since then my phone has been hard bricked! I cannot enter into recovery mode as well( power + volume down button). But I am sure that if I can get the bootloader running somehow, my phone will be back. I am sure it does not have any grave hardware issues as such. But the maintenance (service) center says , they will need to replace the motherboard, which is too costly for me.
Can anyone give me any pointers of how can I get my phone working again?

Have you tried connecting it to a computer and seeing if it gets detected by the computer in device manager? If so, it should still be possible to bring it back.
What exactly happens when you try to power it on? Does the screen turn on at all? Does it vibrate once, as supposed to, when you press the power button? Or is it completely unresponsive? Also, when you plug it in to charge, does a red LED light up where the notification light normally is?
Also, try various combinations of powering up sequences. You want to try the following:
Hold power
Hold power + vol down (this should bring you into bootloader)
Hold power + vol up
Hold power + both volume buttons
Let me know what happens when you try this, and maybe I can help you out!
