What to do with a damaged Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My girlfriend recently got a Nexus 5 on a $50/month plan to replace her Samsung Galaxy Note 2 where she broke the LCD screen for the second time. I helped her look for a more solid phone case and ordered a Ballistic shell gel case for $30. Unfortunately she dropped her Nexus 5 yesterday before the case arrived, and now she's very distraught that she dropped her shiny new phone. Fortunately only the plastic got damaged, but to her the phone is not the same anymore.
I've read that you have to replace the LCD if you want to replace the plastic case, which is obviously not worth the cost. Maybe instead she can sell the phone on Ebay and get a new one to use with her plan from the Google Play store? For some reason I'm not quite seeing myself, the Nexus 5 is selling for pretty high prices on Ebay, so maybe she can replace her nexus 5 at a reasonable cost.
Please advise

sell the N5 and get her a smaller phone , obviously she can't handle big ones

It won't sell for a high price cause it's retail price is already low.

When I go on Ebay I see many offers where people are bidding $300 for a used Nexus 5 with 16 GB, it makes me wonder...

Bidders are probably from countries that can't get the phone officially.
Sent from my Nexus 5

Just put a case on it and you'll never know the plastic got damaged.

Depending how bad it is, you'll probably still get a few hundred dollars for it. Buy another one from Google or Swappa, and make sure to get it in a case before she even touches it.

Sell the phone in India and you will actually get more price for it than what you paid
Here it's being sold for Rs.33000 ($550)... So You can put it up for $400-450 or something and also get the carrier lock removed by a local shop,,,

What carrier lock? The n5 isn't carrier locked.

Ohh so even if you buy the n5 on a contract from a carrier, it isn't?? Didn't know that! :cyclops:

None of the GSM Nexus handsets were ever locked.

I agree with the first reply (get her a smaller phone), get her a moto g or something. I can understand Note 2 since its really big, but nexus 5? What the hell is she doing with her phone? Ebay and swappa are both useless if you ask me, post it on your facebook or something and try to sell it to someone you know.

I'd recommend sticking the Nexus 5 on eBay, you'll get a decent amount for it and you can replace it with a smaller device which is less likely to be dropped.

How much for my skyrocket

if i sold it here on xda on the marketplace do you think 400 is a fair price?
need some opinions especially if you have sold phones on here before. If you dont think thats a good price what would your opinion be?
Ive had it since release day the thing is in amazing shape maybe a few light light scratches on the battery cover if you look hard but nothing besides that.
It comes with:
the really nice screen protector from the mall i think its invisible shield
otterbox commuter case
GSP case
32GB sdcard
Galaxy nexus extended battery
stock battery
original box with all manuals and unused headphones
official samsung hml to hdmi cable
kinda want an s3 so might sell it if i can get a good chunk of change lol
Sell it for higher. The phone itself should be about $350. SD Card is $60 if it's Class 10. Invisibleshield is $30. And the other things, I don't know.

Can buy it NIB on Amazon for $350, I wouldn't pay more than about $200 for a used one.
Accessories might entice someone to buy but don't add much to the overall value.
RE: Price
You can get used ones on eBay for $300 so with your accessories id say a fair price is more like $350
yeah 300 for the used. Might sell it for 330-350 if its in really good condition. I personally dont care about extra accessories. They just simply dont add any value to your phone. At least when sell people seems like yeahh whatever i just need the phone.

People on ebay are nuts, they regularly bid up used items and pay more than what they can buy new.
$250
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
I'd say between $250 and $300 depending on the condition, scratches, nicks etc.
I agree, accessories have no value on used items.
Why are you selling this awesome phone?
I had put mine as "feeler" for 340$ including the US only shipping charges and insurance .. Had to deal with few tire kickers in the market place section here on xda ... Then I deleted my post and what I can see is that I would be for sure a complete dump if I sell this awsome phone for 200$ or 250$ ... Never worths it..
Yeah thats always the case. Once you buy a phone a new one comes out and brings down the value.
Overall the i727 is still a good phone and not worth selling for $250. I would have sold mine for $400 if i could and bought the S3.
im currently selling my skyrocket on craigslist for $320. saw a couple of ads the prices range from 400 for unused and 300 to 350 for used. Some of them have scratches and about 6 to 5 month old. My phone is about one a half month old with 0 scratches . So far its kinda going slow I bet if I'll lower a price below 300 thing would go smoothly. Let's see... I once managed to sell used Kindle fire for 180 !!! who knows crazy people out there.

I got my skyrocket off of Craigs list for 300 and it came with box and usb and charger plus it also came unlocked and its in mint condition just a small Nick on the bottom left can't even tell its there so I'd say 300 to 340 maybe 350 if it Comes with all thoes accessories I would pay like 340 or 350

Selling a skyrocket
I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere, but I hopped on Craigslist instead of going with a traditional online sale, and I got $350 out of my skyrocket with very minimal scuffs on the battery cover, a defender otter box, an invisible shield and the charger. Depending on where you are, you may consider that, I'd imagine a bigger town might turn a little better profit than the rednecks I live around. :good:
I call bs on the fact that accessories dont matter mine would come with 48gbs compared to 16... I took the case off and the phone is actally flawless no scratches I posted it in the for sale section:

I think anything over three for used is too much

Yes you are correct about the lack of contracts, however you can still be a new or existing customer on T-Mobile. I bought this phone for my mom on our family plan and she was not eligible for the free charger (or free anything for that matter) because we were not "signing up" on T-Mobile, just simply upgrading her phone.

If you upgrade in a store you should be able to get freebies. When I got my Nexus early in the year I got a free car charger and free Skullcandy headphones. Last week my wife got the galaxy s3 LTE edition and she got an extra wall charger, body glove case and a power bank all for free. Don't be afraid to ask "so if I get the phone today are there any free accessories with it?"

true today i went to t-mobile and my cousin bought a white nexus 4 they gave him 2 free accesories cuz he paid in full he got the screen protectors and a case for his girlfriends s4 t-mobile can be really nice sometines but sometimes they can be a pain in the neck
i got one
I just went in for my upgrade on monday and i got a free wireless charger in store
I had a mixed bag this week with t-mobile. After being told over the phone that the nexus wasn't available for current customers right now at all (I'd called because it wasn't showing up online) and hung up on when i protested i swore i would never buy anything from them again.
2 days later my gnex ate it and I was forced to go into the store. Not only was he happy to sell me a nexus 4 but I also got the charger and a case for free.
I can't put my phone down long enough for the charger to be useful for me though. So it's now on ebay. When it sells it'll be like getting a free phone and $30 cash.....and then only having to pay $17 a month for 2 years... should wipe out the price difference between t-mobile and the play store though.
is this the stock google wireless charging ORB? i have that cheap chinese POWERQI charger, got it for like 40bucks shipped, its a POS! u get what u pay for i guess
it doesn't keep the the phone topped up charge, so if you forget to take it off the chager after 2-3 hours, you'll only get like 80% , not 100%
I went to a Verizon store and picked up the WCP-300 for $40 + tax and I love it. I haven't had a bit of trouble with it, and now I'm using it in the car with that cradle that was designed for it (before that I used a rubber band to hold it on my regular car cradle).

I went to T-mobile during the sale just because of this offer to upgrade to the Nexus 4 from my SGS3 and they said that "In order to get the wireless charger accessory with my purchase I had to be a 'new t-mobile customer'. After spending about 2 hours on hold trying to reach a Customer Service representative on the phone, I finally gave up and just bought the device from T-mobile without the accessory the next day, but not before they decided to raise the price of the nexus 4 $5..
Has anyone had any luck getting the charger as a returning customer?

[Q] Buying Nexus 5 from Ebay or Craigslist Warranty ?

My question is if i buy a Nexus 5 from eBay Or Craigslist will the phone be cover by Google even though the phone was purchased by some one else warranty ? I want to buy it from the play store but i don't want to wait 3 weeks..
You're better off preordering it than taking your chances or paying an inflated price. There's a pretty good chance you'll receive it before the ship date, as well. Mine was a "ships by 11/8" and shipped on the 3rd.
I wouldn't risk it to be honest. I did that with my s4 and instantly regretted the decision.
Only buy from reputable stores. I've learned my lesson.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Legally, you have no warranty if bought from a third party. Will some manufacturers still honor it? Sometimes, but you can not compel them to do so if they choose not to.

What is the love/hate with the N5?

OK... T Mobile's new promotion where they'll cover your ETF is very tempting.... I'm still stuck in my VZW contract.... my SIII, my wife's Gump-phone (LG feature phone from... 4 years ago I think).... But their new promotion is outstanding... basically, they'll pay my ETF and I can get a two line contract with TWO Nexus 5's (for each of us) and pay LESS than what VZW is shaking me down for now and give me what amount's to a month's payment to turn in my current phones.... all with only $20 down. Not a bad deal.
Now, I'm seriously considering the Nexus 5 (T-M actually wants LESS for the 5 than another SIII....), but I'd like to hear the God's-honest truth feedback on the phone... Not just "OHMAGHERD, ITS TOTES MAGOTES!" Where's the scars? The ugly bits.... the parts that even those with Nexus love think kind of stink. Does the battery blow? What flakes out on you? ROM support is lacking, etc...?
cause people are mad that google didnt make a device that can predict the future

its a great phone!
but it cost less than the sgs3. google sells the phone for $349(16gb) brand new, tmobile sells it for $450, still less than the sgs3. just because samsung overcharges for its phones when new, doesnt make the nexus 5 bad. google sells them not to make a massive amount of money off them like samsung does with its phones, but to get the newest version of android out into the world. id say that right now, the nexus 5 is the fastest phone on the market. everything on it works, as it should. the camera is wonderful. id say nothing is lacking. and rom support/development.. its a nexus. nexus devices always have the best rom support/development, no other devices compare.
Take this for what its worth. This is the BEST (IMO) phone I have owned (I've owned quite a few). I get constantly 5 to 5 1/2 hours of SOT (or more depending on usage, flashing new kernel or flashing new ROM), more than enough power (even when under clocked to 1.5) and anything else you would want out of a phone.
The camera does all I need it to do for a phone (some say it could be better). If I need to take any better pictures I'll pull out my real camera.
Take a look through here.
I've got no rattling power buttons, no light bleed, no yellow tinted screen and no weak vibrator motor.
So all in all I believe (remember this is all IMO) one of the best phones on the market.

I'm already with T-Mobile and my JUMP upgrade is in 10 days. Being said I will go from the One to the N5 without question.. T-Mobile did just lower the price of the N5 to 396 which makes it $0 down and $16.50 per month... Keep in mind you do pay tax which is almost $30 per device plus the $10 Sim fee. So you should be looking at about 80 down.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk
T-Mobile sells the n5 for 50 more than the play store, but it is arguably one of the better values to take advantage of their etf promotion(since you need to buy a phone from them).
Its specs and low price make it a great bang for your buck compared to their other offerings if you want the latest specs. Since T-Mobile doesn't carry the motog, the lumia 521 is probably the next great budget phone if your wife doesn't really want a smartphone....
All in all, I'm pretty happy with the n5. Its a bit power hungry when you run the processor at full throttle, and the speaker is a bit tinny, but the performance compared to other phones at this price can't be beat.

I love my Nexus 5, it's the first android device that didn't have me wanting to go back to the iPhone and now I'm sold. Nothing I don't like about the phone at all.
I think you'll enjoy it.
Just keep in mind, you have to get the phone from T-Mobile for them to pay for your ETF. I went in yesterday and they told me I'd have to give them my Nexus 5, and get a phone from them. I told them no thanks and I'm going to pay the ETF myself by selling my iPhone.

I just traded in my Verizon S4 and had T-Mobile pay my ETF. I got the N5. So far I'm loving it. One of the best internals available and it's buttery smooth. I'm missing the 13mp camera. Pictures are alright and video looks amazing on the Nexus 5. I don't miss the IR Blaster much. The nice matte is very comfortable.
I love this phone. Would switch again.

[Q] Warranty worth it ?

Do anybody actually buy warranties like squaretrade for nexus phones and find it worth it ?
It comes with warranty anyway. I don't expect to use it much after warranty expires.
Insurance in the other hand, for me - yes! Accidental damage, theft and loss. Im inlucky so the peace of mind is worth it. Not everyone is the same
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Well the one I am considering is the squaretade one which doesn't cover loss and theft and while I am covered currently with one of AT&T I am moving to t-mobile because it is cheaper per month and they don't sell insurance on devices you bring with you and in my case the nexus 5 I bought on the play store
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
So you're asking if insurance is worth it? Not warranty (manufacturing defects)... but the insurance doesn't cover loss or theft? What does it cover? Accidental damage only?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
The "extended warranty" that is sold is one of the highest profit items for a retailer.
Same goes for the "equipment protection plans" or whatever they call them these days.
Figure what the chance of you using the plan/insurance is over the couple of years your phone is worth replacing. Remember that they will probably replace it with a "refurb" and not a new phone. Multiply the chance of you using it by about $200. (A new Nexus is $400, will probably be worth $200 in a year or two, and $100 not long after that.) That $8 a month is about $100 a year. In two years, you could have held onto the cash and, if something happened to your phone, easily bought a replacement yourself, or used the $200 to trade up to your next shiny object.
As pointed out above, even if you do buy it, what does it really cover?
