[Q] TMobile - G2 vs Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have an LG G2 with Sprint, but will be switching to T-Mobile in the next few days. As part of TMobile's program to pay my early termination fees with Sprint, I have to trade in my current phone (they're only giving me like $35 for my G2); I have to port my number; and I have to buy my new phone from them. (I know the Sprint phone wouldn't work with TM anyway)
I'm struggling over the decision to either stick with the G2 or try the Nexus 5. I've read numerous reviews about the Nexus 5, and the only things giving me pause are the battery life and camera performance. I understand there was an update that improved the camera, but that it's still just "ok".
Is there by chance anybody that has used both phones and could give me some feedback?
I absolutely LOVE the battery life on my G2. I came from a Galaxy Nexus when upgrading to the G2; with the GNex I could barely get through a day without charging. I even had a spare battery I took with me when travelling.
I also like the knock on feature; I'm so used to it that I find myself double tapping my tablet screen (ASUS TF300T) expecting it to turn on. It's not a deal breaker though.

MODS: I put this in the Q&A forum; should it have gone in General instead?

Hi, this is the thread of LGG2 vs N5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512881
The features you are looking for, are possible on nexus 5 via custom kernel, but it consumes more battery when idle.
Camera is good on nexus 5 and battery much better than Gnex. Also, the Fun of android development is even better but if you really love the battery life + knock, you are free to stick with the G2, you won't regret it.
That being said, go to the link above for more info as this thread could be closed.

$35??? sprint phones really lose value..

Thanks; I hadn't seen that thread yet. Some of it was helpful, but most was just a flame war.
I hate that I can't actually hold the phone when I go into the store. I played with the N5 briefly on my lunch break. Walked away still having no idea which way I want to go.
The only reason I can think of for the low trade-in value of my G2 is just that Sprint uses different technology. I could get a heck of a lot more for it if I could sell it myself, but that's part of their deal to pay my ETF.

If battery and camera are the only things you are worried about....
The camera is good on the Nexus 5. Its the software everyone complains about. But you can easily download a better camera app. I personally like the stock camera with the HDR+ feature pretty much always turned on though.
The battery, I couldnt say. The G2 has a 3000 mAh Battery and the Nexus 5 has a 2300 mAh battery. So obviously, the G2 would have better battery life. Its definitely better than the Galaxy Nexus though.

Some conflicting info on whether the latest Sim unlock hack allows usa gsm operators
Or sell your sprint lg g2 on eBay, buy a crappy sprint phone to trade in. Cheapet

My wife has the G2, I have the N5.
4 things stand out to me:
The g2's screen seems quite a bit less bright. She has trouble using it outside in the sun, I don't.
You can only get a 16GB N5 from Tmo, whereas the G2 is 32GB by default.
Yes, the G2's battery lasts WAY longer. She'll be around 70% by the end of the day, I'll be looking for a charger well before then. Similar usages. (that's not to say the N5's battery life is dismal, it's not. It easily goes for a full work day with >50% left. My SGS3 would sometimes be 20% into a second battery already at the end of a work day.)
I really hate LG's UI. It's as if it was designed by the children that brought you Hello Kitty and have grown up a little bit and got into phone UI design.

How happy are you with your Droid Charge?

I'm up for a contract renewal with Verizon next Tuesday, a week from today. I currently have a Droid Eris and want to get rid of it as soon as possible! One of the phones I am considering is the Charge. I am also looking at the Xperia Play and the Droid X2. Basically the choice is going to come down to Dual Core vs 4G (I currently AM in a 4G area) vs. taking the cheap way out (Play is free online) and getting the added bonus of the game pad.
I am trying to gather information from people who have used the phone for a few months, rather than reviewers who generally only test phones fore a few days or even hours.
I am mainly concerned about battery life and general performance (lag between button presses in actions such as opening the keyboard, pressing buttons on the keyboard, opening apps, switching home screens, etc.)
My daily tasks include:
Facebook-probably checked about 5 or so times per day, or more often if I get a notification
Email- approximately 10-15 emails per day from 2 seperate google mail accounts
Weather- generally checked in the morning and evening, but with weather alerts ON and having the temperature indicator on screen refreshed at a decent interval would be nice
Texting- approximately 50-60 texts per day. keyboard MUST be responsive while texting, this is the single most annoying thing on my current phone
Phone Calls- About 30 minutes per day in a relatively strong signal area
Web Browsing / Pulse News- About 20-30 minutes per day
Music Listening - about an hour a day
Youtube / Music Videos - 20-30 minutes per day
And probably around 30 minutes up to an hour (on a heavy day) of gaming
All this on 4g, and I would prefer NOT to have to turn 4G on and off, but I am curious how much of a power savings that gives.
Would it be reasonable to expect the Charge to last through this type of usage with a single charge? Most of the gaming and video viewing is done when I get home anyway, so plugging in wouldn't be a huge deal, but it would be nice to make it through a whole day.
Also, are there any applications that feel limited without a dual core processor? I was originally looking at the Droid Bionic, but the price on that is a little steep.
What is the picture/video quality like on both the front and rear facing camera?
Is Netflix available for the Charge?
What is the support supposed to be like for the Charge? (Will it be updated past gingerbread?)
And in general, are there any nitpicky or buggy aspects of the device that should be known before choosing it?
the charge is a great phone and has great developers but i would suggest you get the droid bionic which is suppose to be release this Thursday. also the bionic is suppose to be worth 300 which is how much the droid charge currently cost's. it might drop in price when the bionic comes out, but i doubt it
Though I am not sold on the Bionic being all that it might be, you can have the best of both worlds with it, dual core and 4G.
that being said, the Charge is fantastic, some complain about this and that, and they may have legit complaints, but in a solid 4G area I think you will find it fits the bill rather well. I am in a 4G area and I have no drops of any kind, battery life is really good and overall just very nice.
The picture quality is very nice. I believe it is a 5 MP on the back and 1.3 on the front. The standard card is lacking if you want to record video in HD (why ship it with a crappy card samsung?!?!?) but normal video is good.
I never had a dual core phone, but with the Charge I havent come up against anything that has been laggy or wouldnt run.
I think Netflix is supported now on the charge, but check me on that.
One thing about Samsung and Verizon, the updates take FOREVER. We will get GB more sooner than later, but do not expect ICS until the turn of the year (even though it is out in October). Even that may be optimistic. if you are into rooting and ROMs, I am sure that we have a few good ones coming down the pike once we get a final on GB, include the possibility of CM7.
One thing that should not be overlooked is the 4G. It is HUGE and hellafast. You will wonder how you got along without it
From the phones you mentioned, I would go with the Charge or the X2.
I suggest the bionic as well. I use to have an evo 3d with Sprint before I moved to Verizon with the charge. I thought man if I had this phone with Verizon with 4g id have the best phone possible. That phone with its dual core never showed any signs of lag whatsoever. I switched to Verizon for better coverage and faster 4g. I love my charge but I do wish it was a dual core so the bionic is what id go with. Or u can wait until hopefully the nexus prime comes out....

I love my charge.
As far as the bionic goes you know thats going to be a battery hog.
I am very happy on where the devs are going on this device couldn't be happier.
If you can deal with the screen, I recommend the Bionic. The SAMOLED+ is really the only thing the Charge has going for it.

There was some lag when I first got it, mainly when switching tasks, returning to home screen etc. Rooting and modifying the phone has improved this tremendously. Also, running the latest stock leak of Gingerbread appears to have fixed these issues as well. It's really a pretty quick phone when "optimized". Just as a meaningless benchmark, overclocked to 1300 and 1400 Mhz I was getting Quadrant scores similar (if not a bit faster) than a stock HTC Thunderbolt.

Massively. Wifi and 3G sip power compared to 4G.

If you're at home, I'd use wifi when you can. If not, I doubt you could get through everything you listed while on 4G all on one charge. Streaming video, rendering in the games, plus all the screen on time, plus the 4G...I think you'd be pushing it.
As far as battery, it's really dependent (for me) on 2 things: network signal and method of data. When I'm at work, I have about 1 bar and it's constantly searching. The battery will drain from this within 6-8 hours usually (with wifi on as well). When I'm at home with full service (and on wifi) I can pretty easily get through the weekend one one charge (with moderate use).

Maybe some emulators would perform better, I was playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time and it did have a bit of slowdown with the panning camera. Other than graphically intensive things like that, I dunno...

Stock filesystem is RFS which is not "ideal", but you can convert this to the quicker EXT4 filesystem, which helps to reduce lag. The latest Gingerbread leak is RFS though and performance is still much better than Froyo.

I have a coworker who is up for renewal and we have been discussing what she should do. Verizon is dropping at least 4 new phones within the next month.
The Boinic comes out Sept 8,
HTC Vigor on Oct 6,
LG Revolution 2 on Oct 20, and
Samsung Droid Prime sometime in Oct.
I would considering holding out past the Bionic and picking up the next flagship Samsung phone that is dropping next month. It should be the first Icecream Sandwich Android phone and will likely be dual core/4g.
I say hold out for the greatest so that you won't be stuck with 6 month old technology (Boinic and Charge) as soon as you use your technology update.
I had the Fascinate and have been on the Droid Charge for a while now. I have been extremely happy with it.
I believe the Charge has the best screen you can get. Period.
Battery life: That is going to vary. I think it will hold up, but if it doesn't there is a pretty handy dock with an extra battery available.
I didn't use my phone a lot last night. From 6pm to 6am this morning used 25% of my battery. During that time, my phone performed a complete backup and a couple other automated operations I have scheduled. It also sync's data at that time. I also used my phone a little bit, but by far the most power was used by the backup operation which is processor and storage card intensive.
So, I'm pretty happy with this... 25% in 12 hours means that with light to moderate usage I'd have 50% used in 24 hours.
As for the menus / responsiveness of the phone. I was okay with it. I would have liked it to be a little snappier, but I wasn't annoyed by the time it took to bring up most things. I did switch over to the Go Launcher to replace the default home screen because it was far more customizable and it was a little snappier that way.
Of course, yesterday, I did just flash my phone with the leaked GingerBread build since it has been reported as being pretty stable... so that battery life I mentioned is on GingerBread and not on Froyo. The GingerBread TW Launcher (home screen) is better, but I still switched back to Go Launcher because it gave so many more choices / controls over how it behaves and how it works.
JuiceDefender has not been working very well on the Droid Charge, but it seems like the developers are finally working on fixing it for the Droid Charge, so that should help. You'll get a lot better battery life if you let JuiceDefender turn off your radios / data when you don't need it.
Charge is a great phone. You can start to find cheap deals on it if you upgrade online now too. There will always be something better a few months down the line. So upgrade to something a little older for free or close to it or upgrade to something brand new for $200-300.
The choice is all yours.

I agree.
I was very happy with my Liberty ROM DroidX & was waiting on the Bionic. Recently however, I fell in love with the awesome screen in the Charge & decided to buy one (it had dropped to under $200 on Amazon).
I turned on the new Charge & on the very first boot I flashed it to Gummycharge 1.9.1 & I absolutely LOVE the thing. I was still planning on replacing it with a dual core 4G phone when they became available, but at this point I like the Charge & that screen so much I don't think I will do that.
I have found that by far the best battery saving tip is to lock it in on 3G except when you are actively using 4G. Where I work, my phone was constantly switching back & forth between the two which absolutely KILLED the battery life.
With setting it to 3G & lowering the screen brightness to 18% except when I'm out in the sun, my battery life is just fine.
One thing I really don't like in the design of the Bionic is the way all Motorola screens are kinda tall & skinny compared to the Charge/iphone etc that have a little wider side to side design which helps when reading web pages etc.

I meant to add that the price of the Charge is $120 on Wirefly with free shipping. It is not worth the $300 that Verizon is asking for it. Of course, I have had very good luck with taking in the best offers and asking a salesperson to do their best to beat those offers. I tell them that I would rather do business with them directly, but I need them to try and beat these deals that I have online. Sometimes you get someone that isn't interested in putting in the effort or you get a stubborn manager who won't budge... but it is worth a try.
Otherwise, just buy it on Wirefly that way and wait the 2-3 days that FedEx takes to deliver it to you. $180 can sure buy a few days of waiting.
I had the fascinate and got the free upgrade to the charge. If the charge was designed like the fascinate it would definitely top my list. I love the screen on the charge, but thats it's main pull. If i had went to the store and picked out my 4g phone (at the time only option was charge, thunderbolt and revolution) i would have picked the thunderbolt. My favorite phone ive ever owned was an EVO 4g which i had for about 3 weeks but sprint sucked.
That being said im not dissatisfied with my Charge, but things could be better.

Most places (verizon included) will not match wirefly's price. They claim that it's because with wirefly you are essentially signing a second contract, that you will keep your phone for at least 6 months before cancelling. If you break that, they charge you a $300 ETF on top of what verizon charges. They can sell the phone cheaper because they know for sure they will either get $300 from the customer or whatever the commission from verizon is.

All I can attest to is my first hand experience. I bought my Fascinate and my wife's Droid2 for LESS than what Wirefly and Amazon were advertising by taking the printouts into Verizon and telling them that I would rather do business directly with Verizon, but I needed their help in beating these prices. The salesperson talked with his manager and they made it happen. It was through a combination of service credits, instant discounts, and a mail in rebate, but the fact was my final price was far less than what was advertised elsewhere.
Oh, and I bought my Fascinate back in September of last year... the day they launched. I hadn't even heard about the Fascinate before that day. I had decided to buy an Android phone and was researching what was out there and it happened to be available so I priced it out. I didn't realize until later that it was the launch day for that device.
If you get a sales rep that doesn't want your business, kindly take your business elsewhere.

Not disagreeing, but wondering why you would prefer the t-bolt to the Charge??
I had a t-bolt for a couple weeks (a Verizon rep loaned it to me) and I hated it. I had the choice of either one when I bought my Charge and I prefer the Charge hands down.
I actually liked my old Liberty ROM DroidX better than the t-bolt except for the lack of 4g

I love my Charge. It is a great all around phone with an amazing screen. The bionic is out tomorrow, so definately check that out as well.
Isn't there an htc phone coming out soon for Verizon? I believe its supposed to have dual core, 4g, a gig of ram, etch. Its going to replace the thunderbolt. But u would be losing the super amoled plus... which I happen to love on the charge.
Oh and htc phones are better suppported by developers. I learned the hard way after leaving the EVO for my charge.

Things I love:
Super AMOLED screen. It's only 800x480, but it doesn't matter, still second to none (or the iPhone)
4g. It's super fast and luckily in alot of places I frequent in NJ.
32GB memory. Thoughful
Things I hate:
Touchwiz. Die please, thank good for LauncherPro.
Single Core Processor. For a phone this expensive...come on. I'm sure gingerbread will speed things up thought, it's not a major concern. Fast enough I guess.
Battery Life. I guess I'm used to my LG Thrive (ATT Optimus One), but it's pretty weak, no real difference between 3g and 4g use from my observations.
Gets hot. Plug it in to charge (no pun intended) and play angy birds...ouch.
Connectivity. 3g is bad with data drop outs, too bad I'm 3g at home . 4g works nearly flawlessly and is impressively fast.
Free RAM. 80MB after a reboot? Come on!!! To be fair, about 150 after I kill all the bloatware, but still, my Optimus One had more than that, like 100mb more!
I just feel for a flagship phone it skimped on some expectations I had...
I'd give the phone a 7/10, with MAJOR points added for the screen.

[Q] Should I buy a Nexus 5 and use it for AT&T?

I currently have a Note 2 on Verizon and have been thinking about switching to a Nexus 5 on AT&T. I had a bad experience with the Galaxy Nexus and have heard negative reviews of the N5 regarding battery life, reception, screen problems, etc. I am trying to decide between the N5 and getting a Moto X off contract for the same price ($349). I have to decide by the 16th because my $150 discount expires then for the Moto X. Please help. Thanks!

You are on a Nexus 5 forum, so it is likely that you will get biased opinions. Personally, I love the N5. I don't have any complaints at this time (Except for lousy service with Sprint - but that is not a device issue)
My N5 is in my pocket and my Moto X Developer Edition is at home. Moto X is a nice phone, but it's no Nexus 5.

I have both sitting on my desk in front of me now. One of them has to go back. Dev Edition Moto X on VZ and an N5 on T-Mobile. Honestly, both phones are great. I love the build quality of the X and it's the first Android phone I've used that actually has useful additions to the OS instead of gimmicks. The fact that it got 4.4 so quickly is encouraging as well. That being said, I've always been a Nexus fan. My first Android phone ever was a Nexus One. The N5 is definitely faster with a larger, sharper screen. The quick updates and huge dev support are big pluses too.
Neither of them has what I would call great battery life. The X might be slightly better. I had a Note 2 on VZ as well. It will blow them both out of the water in that regard. I haven't noticed any reception or screen problems with the N5 other than poor off angle viewing.
If you care about flashing ROMs and kernels you want the Nexus. I assume your code only applies to the standard edition X. You'll be lucky to maintain root much less flash anything without having a dev model. Not that there's a lot to flash right now anyway. Personally, I'll probably end up sticking with the X simply because I use a lot of mobile data. T-Mobile coverage isn't cutting it for me and getting 6+GB on ATT will be expensive. I have grandfathered unlimited with VZ and a big corp discount.

I am expecting it to be less than than the note 2 because the battery is smaller. However, I don't want to get a new phone that constantly needs to be charged. How long does it last you on average?
N5. AT&T. no reception issues. on a custom kernel. my daily battery life average is 18 hours on battery with 5 hours of screen-on time.
Stay away from AT&T with the Nexus 5, I only get about 46Mb/s on LTE and perfect call quality and reception everywhere I go
On AT&T and no issues with reception or speed.
I'm currently using N5 with AT&T with no problem with reception or speed. Also the battery lasts for a full day of use (14-15 hours). Of course it's not on the level of Note 2, but still given that it's a Nexus with incredible specs and a great screen (the colors will look a bit washed out if you come straight from Note 2, but they're more accurate in my opinion, and there's a gamma control app you can use to change N5 color), I'd say go with the N5.
On AT&T with my N5 in Maryland. I came from a iPhone 5 and HTC One. I have a 33 mile ride to work and its mostly county twisty roads. I always would lose my reception at 4 spots on my ride. 2 in one county and 2 in another county. I would lose it with my ip5, then with the One. I was just commenting to my wife, I don't lose the reception at all anymore. Now I suppose maybe more towers came online, but its a pretty big area I cover and the spots were pretty spread out.
I get 16 hours easy and by that time I'm usually shutting it down anyway, I use the Nexus wireless charger.
I don't have any experience with the Moto X, but I was close to trying that also. The sound on the One's speakers are really good and it has the ir blaster thing, but with all that I stuck with the N5, I just really like it.
I'm on stock rom, rooted and custom recovery.
I want the nexus the most. I left sprint for Verizon 2 years ago for the galaxy nexus. It had several problems and now my contract is up and I want the N5. I figured at&t would be my best bet for the network. I am just worried that the N5 will be problematic like the GN. But you guys are making me feel better about the n5 and at&t.

I have the n5 on AT&T, complaints! Great phone, battery gets me through my work day (which usually is from 9/10AM to 7 or 8PM)
I owned the Verizon GNex, and I can tell you that there is no comparison between that POS and the N5. Much of the GNex problems were with Verizon (or the fact that the CDMA radio made it different). Many people who loved the GNex had the GSM version. Most of the people who hated it had the Verizon version. They were that different.
The N5 is simply a work of art, comparatively. It's smooth as butter, has a MUCH higher build quality, and is wholly supported by Google. There are no CDMA radios to screw things up, and Verizon is completely out of the picture (as are other carriers) so updates will actually be timely.
I switched from Verizon to AT&T in preparation for the N5 (before it existed), and had an S4 (active) in the meantime. As soon as the N5 was available, I jumped on it, and I have been extremely happy. I have had no discernible signal issues. Battery life (for me) is better than either the GNex (with extended battery) or the S4 (standard battery), but wireless charging makes that a moot point, since I can just keep wireless chargers at home and at work, which provides a quick top-off when needed.
In short, don't worry. You'll love the N5. Don't let the Gnex scare you... there really is no comparison.
EDIT: Regarding the Moto X. Great phone also. In fact, I almost went that way myself. Active Display and always listening Google Now are awesome. However, 720p screen and no wireless charging were deal-killers for me. The N5, with its LCD screen is much easier to see in bright sunlight, and wireless charging... well... what can I say? I'll never own another phone without it. I would take wireless charging over active display any day of the week. However, you may be different.
Decide which feature you'd like best and go for that device. You can't go wrong with either phone.

Thanks for the GN comparison. I have never tried wireless charging. How does it work?

Still worth buying?

Hey guys, in your opinion is the nexus 5 still worth buying?
how long will we continiue to get updayes and so forth?
Thank you for your opinions
It depends, if you can buy the phone for a low price yes. Have a look at the Nexus 4, it´s > 2 years old and still got the latest updates from Google.
If you can wait a few months longer, you might want to wait for the latest Nexus device from Google ?
Other than that, the Nexus 5 is still a great device. Maybe I´m going to use mine for another year.
In terms of performance , the nexus 5 is still one of the fastest/smoothest android devices , But since it is a nexus it has some downsides like the battery and the cameras (both) .
If you can get a great deal on it don't hesitate to take it , otherwise don't buy it .
I advice you to wait few months for the new nexus . Because now is not a good time to buy a pure android device , Few months from now there will be a new nexus and a new moto x and oneplus two .
Battery is terrible, camera is subpar, non-removable battery (can be changed with small tools) , no sd slot , everything else is good. Koodo sells the lg g3 that has 3000mah battery, removable battery, sd card for $400 cad outright.

What Are the Symptoms of DPD?
People with DPD become emotionally dependent on other people and spend great effort trying to please others. People with DPD tend to display needy, passive, and clinging behavior, and have a fear of separation. Other common characteristics of this personality disorder include:
Inability to make decisions, even everyday decisions like what to wear, without the advice and reassurance of others.
Avoidance of adult responsibilities by acting passive and helpless. Dependence on a spouse or friend to make decisions like where to work and live.

Unless you like phablets, yes, it is worth buying. There may never be another stock device in a decent size again. This phone performs better than a nexus 6 too as far as I can tell. (Owned a nexus 6 for a couple months and wasn't impressed)

Lg g3 is far behind the nexus 5 in performance and user experience . My brother owns a G3 and he is not happy with it , every thing is good in the G3 except that It is terribly slow and laggy even with custom ROMs and kernels .
I don't know what was lg thinking when designing their UI , But they succeeded to make Android ugly , fat and slow !

That does look really nice. Perfect specs really. With that resolution it will perform better than any phone released yet. If I wasn't on Sprint I probably would check it out if the next nexus turned out to be too big. Sony doesn't seem to have a relationship with Sprint though and I cannot switch carriers due to signal issues at my work (I work in a hospital basement and Sprint has a contract with us for a system that gets signal to the basement. Any other carrier is no signal).

I went from the N5 to the G2 (on 4.4.2) and I'd say the experience is good but runs at 70% speed of the N5. On the other hand, I get double the battery of my previous N5's so I couldnt be happier. :victory:
To answer the question, Yes buy the N5 if the price is right, i.e. below $200 in good condition. If battery life is more important consider the G2 if you can get it below $200.

Really Loving my Lg V10

I decided to make this thread for myself and others to express the reasons we love our V10. I see so many threads about people's dislikes and would hate for that to negatively impact potential buyers of this great device.
A few reasons I love my v10 are:
SD CARD: #1 reason explains itself
REMOVABLE BATTERY: #2 could of easily been #1 reason
SECOND SCREEN(NOT GIMMICK):truly convenient makes multitasking a bit more easy
AUDIO DAC: with the right headphones it's a night and day difference
MANUAL CAMERA: like a baby DSLR
VIDEO CAMERA: great quality and mic balance
LG OVERLAY NOT TOO HEAVY: personal opinion
BUTTON PLACEMENT: AGAIN PERSONAL OPINION
RUGGED FORM FACTOR: pretty tuff since I mostly use with no case
BUILD FEEL IN HAND: my opinion but feels premium
What are the reasons you LIKE/LOVE LG V10
BeameD From My LG V10... The one with the ALWAYS ON SCREEN... Watching me.. ?
Number reason I love this phone is that I can turn on gps, nfc, Bluetooth and use this phone heavily (youtube, movies, gaming) all day long and not worry about charging it multiple times, since I got an extra battery with me 24/7.. This is such a convenient for a power user like me..
The rest off The points you stated are all also reasons to love this phone too.

Im using a Galaxy S1 right now, cause my Galaxy Express stopped working some weeks ago.
Can't wait for the release here in europe!
I am another v10 user coming from a sgs5 this phone is way better.
I like the positivity of this thread as much as I like the positive experience the new LG V10 has given me.
We need not vigorously defend the V10 when it comes under attack. The endless and ... (sorry if this hurts) ... pointless volley of posts with "haters" of the V10 in defense of our phones as it doesn't do anything but give page depth (negative gravity) to negative threads. Wish them a positive experience with their new choice and abandon the thread.
The phones at this level are all pretty good, with the differences being slight at best. The user experience is as personal as a first date, they don't all work out and we're allowed to move on to another in hopes of a positive relationship that lasts. I spun through 2 new phones within 3 weeks until I found this one.
Its perfect ... for me.
I'm all for being positive about this phone but at the same time I'm not delusional. It's obvious this phone has its flaws but the pros outweighs the cons.

Why? I'm not trying to start an argument, but I haven't owned a Samsung in ages. I know a lot of people who left the Note series and move on to other devices. I tried the Note 5 but when my wife bought the V10 I quickly fell in love with the Ability to make good recordings of live bands, and the DAC is freaking awesome! I no longer carry around my other Audio device.
Using Neutron, with DAC configured correctly is a new experience in Audio and the fv5 camera and video recorder is by far the BEST I've ever seen! I've used the Samsung Galaxy series of friends who asked me to take pics of bands or for me to take pics of audience when my band was playing. I recently dropped it on the street in no case and it was fine.
The battery isn't as good as my LG G3 or my brothers G4... But I have an Extra battery and 128 gig micro SD card... So I guess my question is what am I missing about the Note 5? I prefer the 808 because it stays cooler... So what did I miss?
I'm really sorry if this sounds like I'm trying to start a debate. I honestly don't know.
So some like it, huh. Trying to keep my S4 until August when I get Verizon Upgrade (apparently prior 2 year contract and loyalty plan holders still get subsidized phones every 2 years, for now).
Frustrating bec the Note 5 or Nexus 6P have much of what I want, but lack of removable battery is a dealbreaker, my S4 battery was completely shot after 12 months but a few new $7 oem's in my bag and it's fine. So much easier than fiddling with portable chargers and cables.
So, LG seems to be the only option for 2016, V10 or G5 if it retains the removable battery.... Sigh...
I love my v10. I was worried about the battery at first, but now after having it since launch, I usually go to bed with 30% left. Not sure why it got so much better, but it did. I went to bed at 41%last night and woke up with it at 37%.that's with the second screen always on. The camera is outstanding and no lag ever. The removable battery and sd are a must have for me. This phone never even gets warm. My galaxy grand prime with the lowly sd 410 gets warmer than my v10. I hope LG keeps this formula!

My first LG phone, I love this phone, wait for the root
I loved my Flex but it didn't have stabilization for the camera.
So I tried out BlackBerry Passport. Good phone, but it was a down grade when compared to Flex in real world use.
Picked up the V10 on a whim and..........jaw dropping user experience.
The battery could be a 3400 ma, but I make the 3000 ma work.
Loving this phone too - I finally got on T-Mobile Jump On Demand, but I'm not sure I'll want to trade this thing in ever!
Killer battery life, a removable back (and the goodness that comes with it), great display, quick, 2nd screen,... What's not to love.

I completely agree with your list with a MAJOR exception on ruggedness. I just paid $150 to have the phone replaced under insurance. I cracked the screen on the very first drop from barely a foot onto my coffee table. DO NOT USE THIS PHONE WITHOUT A CASE. If you crack the screen the entire warranty is null and void...you're on your own if anything malfunctions later. YOU MUST HAVE INSURANCE if you plan to go without a case. Also, my first two LG V10's were duds -- a first for any smartphone company. The first one had non-working speaker, back to the Verizon store and with my schedule that's tough. The second phone had a non-working front facing camera, back to the Verizon store yet again but this time with the added hassle of the store not wanting to take my phone since they have to give you a new one. I went to three separate stores and each changed their stories about having the phone in stock only to have none once I told them it was an exchange and not a new line activation. Four days after getting the third phone the screen cracks and LG says they'll do nothing for me other than take the phone and look it over for a couple of weeks and that's just for the estimate which was probably going to be $200 despite their marketing the phone as being able to survive a four foot drop face down. So far I'm not impressed with LG's quality control or marketing claims. I dropped my Samsung Note 3 with only a bumper guard too many times to count and the screen never cracked, probably because it wasn't half a pound like the V10. The more a phone weighs, the harder it's going to impact. The Note 3 and 4 feel like half the weight of the V10 in hand. I'm not sure I will repeat with LG after the V10 given the experience of this first week of ownership.
That being said, when the phone actually arrives working, it is the best value going. I was on the fence about buying a Note 4 instead of the V10 to save money and get most of the features of the V10. But LG's very aggressive promotion convinced me to skip the Note 4 since the Samsung is still expensive for a year old phone. The biggest thing I don't like about the V10 right now is the all the weight of the steel rails which I now discovered are basically useless if you still have to have a case and the glass is not replaceable (the whole digitzer has to be replaced). And of course the Note 4 has AMOLED so that wins the battery life contest every day of the week. I would give the LG a C+ on battery life but mostly because the battery is replaceable. If were fixed with this kind of SOT I would give it a D. But you're not buying this phone if you're not a battery swapper in the first place.
So all in I give this phone a solid B, an honorary value award for keeping SD card and removable battery,
I give LG an F on quality control and F on marketing claims.
I'm loving my V10 today! Today it's a great mobile Yule Log! Merry Christmas everyone!
New LG V10 Owner
Got my LG V10 yesterday, after realizing that the S7 and G5 look too rounded and girlish. The black V10 is a real man-phone!
After coming from an HTC M8, this is the best phone I've ever owned. Speed, battery life, display, camera, everything is awesome.
But the most unnoticed feature of this phone is the superior sound. Remember when everybody said the HTC M8 is a phone with superior sound output for audiophiles? Well, the V10 is 10 times better. I'm using it with a Sennheiser Momentum and it hits the ball out of the park.
Also this phone comes with 64gb of internal storage. My model supports dual-sim, and it's not like the S7 where you can either use 2 sim cards or 1 sim card and 1 sd card. Let's get to the only downside I've noticed so far: The phone is really heavy. But it feels like a premium phone, more than the HTC M8.

Realistic options for a replacement to the Moto X Pure

So I am getting sick of the battery life of this device and charging twice a day just to get by... the QC helps but it isn't always a viable option for someone who is on the road/travels a lot. I am probably going to go back to my Moto G 2015 for the time being as I could get a full days use most of the time on a single charge and just selling my MXPE.
But now the question comes up as what to replace it with... Moto G 5th gen, Blu Pure XR, ZTE Axon 7 Mini, or ???
My requirements are simple, or so I think...
1) 4+ hours SOT, preferably 5+, in mixed signal environment of WiFi/LTE/3G and sometimes without the best signal strength (for reference, I currently get about 2.5 hours on MXPE)
2) 5.2"-5.7" screen with 1080p minimum resolution
3) Stock Android, "near" stock, or simple UI (no TouchWiz, EMUI, ZenUI, or other bloated UI) that allows easy use of replacement launcher
4) 64GB internal storage or 32GB internal+microSD
5) 3GB or more of RAM
6) Full AT&T network compatibility (GSM 850/1900 and LTE Band 2/4/5/12/17 and optionally 29/30)
7) Nougat or Marshmallow with a Nougat upgrade "guaranteed"
8) 3.5mm headphone jack
9) Dual band WiFi - 2.4 & 5Ghz
10) $300USD or less
Would be nice, but not essential...
1) Unlockable bootloader (implies root/custom recovery/ROM development community)
2) Front facing speakers
3) NFC
4) USB 3.0
Absolute no no's are Samsung, Asus, or Huawei/Honor devices.
What else fits these requirements that I am not considering?
I believe the one phone that comes to mind that would fit most of your requirements is the Axon. I took a break from the MXPE (when it flew off my roof and died a horrible death in a rain storm) and had the Axon 7 (normal size) for about a month. You will get NEAR 4 hours of SoT, a qhd screen, 5.5 inches, relatively light for metal body. Unlockable bootloader and decent dev for it, last I checked. Things that bothered me/ pissed me off were that DTTW was laggy and slow, the actual cell service seemed to be really bad, possibly because of the full metal body phone, and the biggest annoyance - no backlit capacitive buttons, so you were left sort of blind in the dark trying to hit buttons. There is also no way through the build.prop to enable the on-screen buttons to bypass the issue at night, last I checked.
LG V20 could be an option too since it has a bootloader unlock now, 3.5-4.5 hours of SoT. I think it has a bottom bezel speaker though, which is a little weird, and as always the LG software has complaints. The dev is good enough to get around that though.
I'm in the same boat as you though. I've been looking pretty hard to find a new phone and the V20 is the only one I am really considering right now.

Would love to... tell me where I can get a new OP3T for under $300... That one is a hard stop requirement.
@xgerryx Same for LG V20 and Axon 7 (which never goes on sale, although the Mini does often), the $300 price point is a big deal
This phone has been a little disappointing. It's good, but definitely not great. It's a night and day difference from the Galaxy S3 I was using, but I wish I had held out a little longer for the SD 820 phones instead of buying in 2015.
It sounds like you've already got a pretty inclusive list for phones that are sold in the US and meet your requirements.
I just checked swappa, and if you're willing to go used, the OnePlus 3 is starting to get down towards the price point you're looking for. It has the same size battery as the MXP, and between the more efficient SoC than this godawful 808/810 generation and an FHD AMOLED I'd think you should get better screen on time out of it. It's a OnePlus so it has loads of good development, so you'll have all kinds of kernel/rom/tweaking available to really squeeze every erg out of it.

NEVER AGAIN!!! I refuse to drop $140 plus taxes and fees (realistically $160) for the service level I get now for $72 per month. Plus the limitations on devices, I would have to buy at least one new phone and/or go under contract. Nope, not happening. (Can you tell I have a grudge against Verizon, lol)
I would look around swappa for a OnePlus 3 or 3t it's worth it no bugs lag free and monthly updates it's already on nougat 7.1.1 and the beta builds they offer are great as well and development is great lots of greats ROMs and kernels and unlocking bootloader will not void warranty
TBH...I think you will have a hard time meeting all of your requirements right now. The market looks pretty dismal which is very unfortunate. I personally will hold out a little longer. I'm really looking hard at what Nokia/HMD are coming up with and hoping their roadmap for US devices includes a mid range device soon. So far their line up seems decent and if they are true to their word about expedient updates for Android, and they will sell devices with unlockable bootloaders at decent prices, I'll be sold.

Like @acejavelin stated, Samsung is not an option, and I agree with him. Yes they have great hardware for the most part, but a less powerful processor running vanilla, our near vanilla Android will run just as well considering the lack of heavy handed UX. I will admit the phone looks great hardware and looks wise, but I personally don't like the look and feel of Samsung TW.

Sammie's are to bloated... Every Samsung devices we have ever had has been problematic... Hope you enjoy yours though but I would never spend that kind of money on a phone.
I have a moto g5 plus as well, its pretty good. It's fast and smooth. Screen and camera are good too, but obviously not as good as the X style.
Yes mxpe battery sucks. I have to charge 2-3 times a day and am not even a heavy user. I know its more than your actual budget but better wait, save a bit more and probably the price will drop also and go for a OP 3T.
i know your problem man.. but why don't you wait for a nougat update?? why not? maybe they might fix up the battery drain issue!
there are barely very less phones which have dual front facing speakers.. market has got very saturated.. all look for flagship but they just don't think that having a good speakers is also a part of flagship project!
as per my personal opinion... this phone is just the best phone ive ever used (till 2015) but in upcoming era you will see more and more features
i will recommend you to wait and not hurry up to get a phone...
if you need a pure stock surely get nexus but just wait for new nexus phone.. maybe they might consider it as a flagship and the value might be cheap??
anyways if you're just asking for all the requirements my opinion (AXON 7) not just only for dual front facing speakers but also for the processor(sd 820),storage(64gb,6gb ram) expandable ovbio (256gb)
plot twist: has hybrid sim XD
but im legit that it'll be upgraded to android 'O'
but it cost around $350
think man.. public reviews are also good
it meets all the requirements but is as costly as mxpe

Nougat can't "fix" our battery issue... Radio and display panel are hardware issues and that's where 75% of all battery drain is. It isn't even issues, it's just how much power they use normally. The SD808's radios are terribly inefficient, and the display panel uses more power than some small towns. If you think Nougat is going to noticably improve active use time, your kidding yourself.
To be honest, I might just pull my old Nexus 5 out if the drawer and switch to it... The battery life can't be much worse.
The sound aspect is less important. FF speakers are nice, but as long as I can hear a YouTube video in an average room and turn the ringer up enough u don't care.
I bought the MXPE as an upgrade to my G 2015 and it was on sale for under $250, and for the most part it is, I just didn't realize how bad the battery was, it is easily half of my G.
I got Axon 7 after X and can't be happier. I've had the A7 since August. Has the front speakers i wanted, nice beautiful Samsung screen. Battery is definitely better then X. Software was buggy at the beginning but they have improved it a lot. Axon 7 has been getting a lot of updates, doesn't mean it'll continue, we were the 1st ones to receive 7.0 with the exception of Google devices, and we are the only ones so far (afaik) to receive 7.1.1 with also the exception of Google devices.
It has its flaws but i love the phone. For the money you can't beat it. It's on sale now on newegg for $330.
