[Q] HTC Sensation XE - USB connectivity not working / Unable to root - HTC Sensation

Hi all,
I've been trying to root my HTC Sensation XE in order to sort a couple of issues (which I'll get into in a moment) with the long term goal of backing up all my data and then installing a new ROM, however despite trying several different methods I've been forced to post this request for help!
The issues, in rough chronological order are as follows:
1. Light/Proximity sensor working intermittently (works fine in safe mode, when it wants in normal mode, apparently root cause is a permissions issue from previous research)
2. Google services sync no longer synchronises and apparently hasn't done so for several months (I only noticed this a little while ago) I daren't delete the entry and re-add it for fear of losing contacts/calendar entries etc that I currently do not have backed up anywhere else.
3. Unable to install new apps/update apps either via direct running of APK files or download via play store or other app store substitutes thanks to "Insufficient storage available" issue. (Currently I have approximately 50mb of space available on internal storage and 46.73 GB free of my 64 GB MicroSD card.)
4. USB lead charges phone without issue, however on connecting to ANY PC makes no attempt to make a connection for Mass Storage, Tethering, HTC Sync or any other service.)
Tonight I was able to test both of my USB cables (Both genuine HTC cables for the phone in question) using a friend's Sensation XE and found them both to working correctly, also her phone was recognised by HTC sync on my laptop and I was able to mount her phone's MicroSD card as a Mass Storage device and access it without incident. My phone however wouldn't work with either her cable or my two.
The problem is this, I want to root the phone so that I can change the default installation location to the SD card in order to circumvent the "Insufficient Storage Available" issue and install Titanium Backup Pro, take a backup of everything on the phone (Certain settings on apps I really cannot afford to lose for business purposes etc) then wipe the phone and begin the process of installing the new ROM I have in mind.
The handset is running the stock ROM and was never upgraded using the OTA update so thankfully still has a H-BOOT compatible with the Revolutionary.io rooting method, however without a USB cable I'm stuck.
Also just before Christmas I took the phone into an o2 store and asked if one of the "o2 gurus" could check the USB port to make sure that it hadn't failed. They (somehow) were able to get it to work with little or no issue yet when I tried to repeat the process at home - no luck. Therefore I don't believe there is a hardware issue at play but simply a software issue stopping me from connecting via USB and using ADB services/Revolutionary.io etc. (He did remark that the cable he used was a Samsung Galaxy cable but as they're both identical cables, I don't see how that could make any real difference).

Basically I'm either looking for A: A fix to allow me to successfully connect the phone via USB and allow me to root normally B: A way to root the phone that doesn't require use of a USB connection to a computer. Everything after that I should be able to do on my own.
I have already tried the "disable/re-enable 'Ask me about USB connection type whenever I connect my phone to a PC' option' which apparently has been found to work for some people with this issue, as well as connecting with and without USB debugging switched on *and* with a different Default Connection Type selected each time I've connected the USB cable. I've also attempted to get a connection whilst the phone is in Safe Mode - none so far have worked.
Also nothing shows in Device Manager on plugging the USB cable in, the phone charges fine but no USB connected sound, no change in devices and no other activity what so ever.
As a side note, the data on the phone is too valuable to lose so just factory resetting is not an option even though I realise it would most probably sort the software issue preventing USB connectivity working.
I have also got Terminal Emulator installed (though without root I’m not sure how useful it will be) and have extensive experience with both Android in general, Linux commands and computer/software engineering so I don't mind if it's a difficult fix.
Thank you in advance guys.

i think...the first and a simple way of sulution to prove that your problem come from your hw or sw is just trying factory resetting your phone from bootloader..you can backup all your important data first before running that process..

It would appear you didn't entirely read the prior post. As the phone is not rooted, running stock firmware with no installation of CWM or Nandroid and currently with no backup software installed (and no current way around that as I'm unable to install any software) - there is no way to perform a backup of all data prior to factory resetting the device. If you can detail a way around this, please do, otherwise a solution that either returns USB connectivity or that allows me to root the device without having to use USB connectivity is what I need

i've already reading all your post...and i've understand all what you mean in your 1st post..and i'm here just wanna trying to help you..
what i mean is...if you wanna try to fix your usb problem..and wanna to ensure that's problem come from your Hardware or your Software..with still in Stock condition of your phone..for now a possibly way to fix that is just using a factory reset from your bootloader..and you can backup your important data (i mean the data in here is just your contact, document, picture, video and music..etc..not mean your program apps or game or all your systems) to your pc..
because what i know until now for HTC phonne..there's no way to rooting your phone without unlocking or s-off your bootloader first... even if you're trying another way to root your phone too..like just unlocking you bootloader via htcdev.com..that process will also factory reset your phone...that's mean you will lose your data from your phone too...unless you're already backing up that file ofcourse just the phone can do is for now is just backing up the data like i've told you above..not your apps or your config or all your phone systems..
that's all back is up to you again friend..i don't mean to push you to do all of that's what i've suggest it above..it's all just back to you again..just ignore me if you think that my advice is just bothering you..
sorry..because only this solution can i give it to you from my limited knowledge...maybe later there's someone with more knowledge than me can give you another and the best solution more than me below..and good luck

see if you have any luck with this tool for backup

[Q] How to install entirely new stock software?

I have a problem with my desire HD, it won't let me search for wireless networks. I tried everything, so now i am turning to you guys! Hope you can help me!
Here is my problem:
When i turn on my wifi i get a message "Unable to search for networks".
Here is what i have tried:
- I tried searching your site for information, and what i found is a thread saying to rename a file. But since i am running stock and do not want to root my phone (company phone), this is not possible for me.
- I have tried restoring factory defaults, without any luck
- I have written HTC support but have not heard from them
What i want to do:
I want a way to format my phone and reinstall the stock version of android on the phone. Just like you do with windows. Is this even possible? I can't seem to find anywhere, where it says its possible via USB cable to reinstall the firmware from HTC?
Do any of you have an idea of how to solve my problem?

[Q] Bluetooth or Airplane Mode not working after JB update

New to this site but have done days of searches for my problem. Since JB update my bluetooth is not working and I have also found out Airplane mode is messed up also. Both will have slight responses for a short time after booting , then nothing. I down graded back to ICS and I get some functionality and have actually paired a device but does not work correctly. Asus wants the tablet sent back , but it sure seems to me as it is Op system causing all of this. It was working fine before. I am new to messing around with android , So one question is since I down graded to ICS 4.0 does the actual device firmware downgrade completely also ? I see that Bluetooth Version lowered and other versions lowered , but could something else not get back to that version , some type of Bios type settings? ( I was told no Bios in android ,but is there something like it ? )
So does anyone have the same problems , any answers or thoughts ?
Is there a way to erase everything completely and go back to the exact files software , kernals etc. as when in the box it came in.
Sure seems to act like a software driver type problems.
What are the "Source Code" that are offered on the Asus Site ? Can those used to be used to Factory fresh the device ?
I do not want to void any warrenty , but before I send back I want to see if it is Hardware or software.
Thanks

Source code is only useful for software developers. To restore your device as close to factory state as possible, install the full firmware package of your desired version, as you already did when downgrading, and wipe data.
Things not restored by this method:
- device-dependent settings (e.g. serial number, sensor calibration data)
- DRM key
- Partition table
These usually cannot be changed by the user and therefore do not need to be restored anyway.
My main concern is the kernal, I feel that this may be the cause of my problems , if indeed the hardware does not have a problem. So when I restored to ICS , Did the kernal complete revert to factory also ? I understand now that the Kernal is the ( Bios) of Android , takes comands from software and tells hardware what to do . ( Right ? )
I am finding that the "Factory Reset " from from "Setting" does not truely reset all settings ( I set a Sound Setting before Reset , and the same setting was "on" after the reset ), therefore a "Firmware" reset back to ICS may leave the reason my bluetooth and airplane is not working.
So is there a way to use the "blob" with-out rooting or causing a warrenty issue ?
The kernel is part of the full firmware, so it is flashed when you install the firmware. It is the core of the operating system and also contains all the hardware drivers. The PC BIOS would be more comparable to the tablet's bootloader, as it only initializes the hardware and loads the kernel.
Your problem description is completely worthless. If you expect help, state exactly what you did, which error messages appear, and describe in detail what does not work and what you expected.
I thought i expalined better. I will try again. I used my bluetooth on my tablet connected to my phone and sent photos to tablet from phone. All was fine, Did not try and use bluetooth again untill a week later ( 3 days after OTA JB update ) now the bluetooth does not work and I see that Airplane mode is not working correctly either.
Since this happened right after the JB Update , It made since to me it is an update problem. I was wanting to go back to the exact state before update to see if errors were gone. I have re installed ICS and had better response from bluetooth , was able to pair a device but after pairing would not work ( headphones , sound stayed on tablet ) .
With these findings it would lead me to beleave two things , the "Firware install of ICS " left traces of the newer Kernal , that caused the problem or the Tablet hardware is the problem.
does that make more since to you ? Sorry about the first Question. I have let the tablet do the OTA back to JB and still in the same situation. I have an RMA set up , but I just like to know for sure the cause before sending back.
Thanks for you time.

[Q] Bricked S7582

Hi everyone,
I unnecessarily set myself up for a lot of trouble with the S7582 (Samsung Galaxy Duos) and am now trying to get out of it (but my hopes are dimming).
I installed "Chainfire 3D" on my phone, not realizing that it was meant for Android 2, but not for Android 4. As a result, the phone will not boot anymore now. I tried to recover via ADB, but since I didn't have USB debugging enabled, I am getting an "unauthorized" error message.
Any more ideas? I read somewhere that "authorization" is only necessary with Android 4.2 and up, so I am wondering if I might be able to get my hands on a compatible Android 4.1 version, e.g. for the S7562, but then again I don't want to destroy the phone even further. I am assuming that at this point, wiping it all and returning it to factory settings would still work, but that would still be pretty bad because it would also mean wiping several important phone numbers and some other data which I will not be able to recover otherwise.
Any help/advice would be highly appreciated!
I am currently downloading a stock version of the regular S7582 firmware, and plan to install it via Recovery (from zip file on external SD). I am hoping that this will remove the problematic drivers from /system while keeping my /data partition.
Another issue is that I rooted my phone following instructions on a certain website, and I went through the instructions to set USB debug mode and install CWM recovery. Yet, when I boot into recovery mode, I can only see stock recovery with very limited options, plus, when I try to connect via adb, I get a "device unauthorized" error with no available options to confirm on my phone.
I am wondering at this point if, before flashing a full rom, I would be better off trying to reinstall CWM recovery. Needless to say, I would only try this if it doesn't wipe my phone (unfortunately, I could not find any info on this).
Once again, any help greatly appreciated.
In case anyone else encounters a similar problem - I ended up reflashing CWM recovery via Odin. That didn't wipe any data.
Next I used adb to rename the Chainfire libraries according to these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2362873&page=2
Phone working again - ton of time lost, but no data.

Issue since cm11,4.4.4, es manager and usb not recognized

My 959V is rooted, had plenty of roms, ect over the last 3 years decided to do Gremlin remover and update it...,
Couple days ago upgraded to the "909" download of CM11,4.4.4, but every site I get it from gives me 908 (even though they all say 909) (last 3 digits of download version). The 908 will not recognize on my Win 7 laptop, but was fine up to now with previous cm11 same phone..
I have used the same cable for the last year for both my Galaxy and 2 Sidekicks phones, data and charging, now the Galaxy only charges, Windows detects but wont recognize, does on the sk4g's
Also (908) will not allow me to paste into sys/media with a " read only issue", although up to now swapped 15 different bootani without problems. Tried 3 different root file managers, same outcome.
Is the driver for the phone firmware windows looks for(on the phone itself) replaceable from sdcard? Im guessing its a bootloader issue and the 908 is the one not to of put on my phone.
Whats the probability I am getting the 909 but the 908 will not allow it to surpass it. Goes through the whole flash and on reboot I have to reenter emails, playstore apps, ect, but on 908 still in settings.
I can/ have been able to swap 1 rom via twrp and sdcard on 908 ( to slimkat4.4.4 and back to 909, but comes up 908) any other roms error before flash(and slimkat does not recognize on usb either).
is it a Kernel fix, and can it be flashed via sdcard? Bootloader via sdcard? Bad usb port? Does charge, and the drivers/ cable verified.
Thank you for any help, been 3 days now, redone my laptops (2) from scratch, everything ,c++,java, netframework, samsung, zadig 2.0, and more.
DId you do a clean upgrade (did a factory reset) before you installed CM11? If you didn't, go into TWRP and do a full backup (/system, /data) and do a factory reset, then boot up the phone and see if your computer will recognize it.

Yes, cashe, factory and davlik, before and after flash. I also have a 2nd motherboard, swapped them out and seen that it also is the 908 download but does recognize and allows me to ES Explorer swap boot animation. Im guessing I somehow erased the driver from the phone itself.
Ive done some Iphone jailbreaking unlocking for friends and found that a certain baseband (if I remember right 5.13.xx or 5.16.xx) would basically lock the phone unable to downgrade or upgrade and was to be avoided. Wondered if this a similar issue. (screwing up my bootloader)
What does windows look for via usb in the phone, adb,? Is it in the kernel and reflashable via sd?
I read also that the mini usb port can get bent over time and needs centering, tried that, cord fits better but not the issue.
Tried to zagdig the 2nd motherboard (worked) for drivers, but the 1st one still has error, device malfunctioned and cant be recognized by windows (7).
If i can get the Anton basic with a twist (no rom just the cm,I have it for Oden but wonder if Its possible cm flash)., Im good I believe, thats how I first rooted and got 4.3 cm,then 4.4.4, 908. Dunno, willing to try anything, not worried about it as I have a 2nd motherboard.
The rom is awesome, with no isuues except the battery stats vary. It says 3 hrs left then dies 10 min later, tried to erase the battery cashe in recovery but doesnt change anything. (related via usb?)
Thank you.

You can flash new kernels via recovery but it sounds like your issues are bigger than that. The fact that the 2nd motherboard is recognized via USB but not the 1st suggests that there's some kind of hardware issue. The drivers on your computer are working fine since the 2nd mobo is recognized, and so is your USB cable.
Why not just keep using your 2nd mobo? Is there something wrong with the 1st?

O.K., so Ive been playing with the second mobo just to test different angles.
1) E.S. File manager is the culprit, swapped out for a paid app Ive used with Sidekick 4g, Root Explorer, and boot ani. goes fine, on both mobos.
2) The latest gapps (cm 11 w/ gaps 4.4.x) was giving me a "Google servers cannot be reached" error on both mobos, used the gapps for cm 10.1 (jb 4.3) and all is working, both mobos.
3) Was reading that possibly the adb driver is in the kernel, and thats what windows is looking for? Ive tried but can only sd card flash at this point so, giving up. I can bluetooth, wifi share or email files to myself if need be. Im guessing its a hardware issue beings that the 2nd mobo was reflashed identical to to the first. (with exception of one click 2.3.6,and w/a twist oc/uv on the 2nd),1st one will not downgrade at all below 4.4.4 by sd, I was trying to ics a rom guessing the foundation might overwrite any missing stuff then upgrade back to 4.4.4.
One post mentioned that the mtd/bml cross flash is a no-no, could that mess up usb driver identity on the phones side?
Not a big deal, both phones/ roms are working great and have no issues (except 1 doesnt connect to a computer for file transfer). Thank you for your help.
Little early to ask but are you going to be in this forum long enough for lollipop to be ported? I would send you this phone for devving if you think you can get it to transfer files. Also need to get a lcd/digitizer, i have the rest of the phone.
Also, the phone was working fine up to about a month ago, it was recognized by the computer, only difference I made was trying apps, off playstore, five fingers for ebay, different weather apps for widgets,silver/gold prices apps. Thats when it started not recognizing.
I was getting the same error about the google servers, then I tried a earlier version of gapps. Connects now.

I have no plans to try a Lollipop port, this phone is almost 4 years old now. You might be better off sending the phone to @bhundven since I recently got two dev phones donated to me.
As far as the phone itself goes, the phone should be recognized even if there is no driver for it installed on your computer. You can use this software to verify that
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
I don't believe you can even edit anything on the phone to make the USB device not be recognized when plugged in short of bricking your phone, so if there isn't even a USB connection being made, as I mentioned before, it looks like a hardware issue is causing your problems.
In that case, it'll be hard to flash anything without going through a lot of hassle since all the reliable recovery methods we have need that you are able to use your USB port on the phone.
EDIT
If you do still have TWRP available on the phone, flashing any ROM will reflash a kernel, but be careful because the recovery is tied to the kernel and some ROMs have a non-working recovery, so if you happen to flash some of these you'll be stuck with a nice paperweight . The latest CM11 I have posted does have a working kernel/recovery but I still don't think it'll fix your issue.

I'm currently looking into it, as well as fixing some issues with cm11. I have an SGS4G, so no need to send a phone.
Not just is it a 4 year old phone, but I am not sure how many people even use this as a daily driver anymore.

I still use two of them. Great little phones really. I see no need or use for 5.0 I think running this CM11 from you guys is about the end of the road for these phones. A great ride indeed. Ill be sticking around regardless just to see what happens. Thanks guys☺

[Q] Issues returning M8 to Stock [S-off/Unlocked]

My phone info:
HTC One M8 (Verizon)
CID-VZW__001
HBOOT-3.19.0.0000
RADIO-1.09.20.926
OpenDSP-v46.2.2-00564-M8974_FO.0811
OS-4.17.605.5
eMMC-boot 2048MB
I am using the new Viper One OS – which is based on Lollipop.
Before I start, let me say that I have been tirelessly searching these forums, in addition to googling, various ways to try to fix my issues. Unfortunately, the “fixes” I keep finding are not working for me. As a result, I am seeking additional help/input before I lose my mind.
Background:
A few days ago, I made a huge mistake while wiping my phone in preparation to install a new custom rom. I was not paying enough attention and wiped KK off of my phone – my phone no longer had an OS and I had NO backup file. I tried downloading stock recoveries and flashing them to no avail – they would fail from TWRP. In addition, adb would NOT sideload them.
When I try to flash the stock rom from TWRP, it says there is no MD5 file and fails. When I try to use adb sideload, it looks like it is starting to transfer, but then freezes at “0.0 xfer”. Somehow, I was able to get the Viper One OS to flash and load onto my phone so that I can use it. However, I am having issues with the wifi consistently disconnecting at random – a known issue with this OS upgrade.
Because I was able to get Viper One on my phone and use it, I gave up trying to restore my OS to stock. But now, because of the wifi issues, I would like to restore my phone to stock with Lollipop (while maintaining s-off/unlocked), and leave it the hell alone.
Issues:
1. Now, my biggest issue is with adb not working. I have downloaded adb/fastboot via Android SDK directly from Google – I figured this would be the most current version. When I use adb, it says that the server is out of date and refuses to sideload or I get the “ack” error. I kill the adb.exe process and restart it, and then the same thing happens. It DOES detect my phone. It says it is adb version 1.0.32. I feel like if I can get this to work, I can potentially fix the other issues. I have deleted and reinstalled adb but I get the same errors.
2. Why won’t TWRP flash from my external sd? Why do I keep getting the MD5 error?
3. Can I use someone else's nandroid backup to recover my phone if the above keeps failing? If so, does someone have one that would work with my phone, and let me download it?
Can someone please help? At this point, I am even willing to download Teamviewer to have someone assist.
I have downloaded the recoveries from the following link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=3052
I have also tried these solutions as well as one that involves downloading a FUU and trying to flash that way: http://www.droidviews.com/restore-verizon-htc-one-m8-to-stock-rom-with-ruu/

Read through this thread and see if it would help. I used option 1 when I couldn't get 5.0 the update the "factory" way and then again when I messed up and xml file right after upgrading lol
