[Q] Which ROM? - HTC One Mini

Hey all, I have read the One Mini forum top to bottom and am still trying to figure out which ROM I should be using.. i,e CM vs Hybrid VS Magio
Im brand new to Android .. would be great to hear people feedback on the various options .. preferably want to run Kit Kat .. any opinions as to which is the most stable?
Also .. are there any definitive guides as to which root method to use i.e. TWRP or CWM .. or will that depend upon which ROM I want to use .. - and where does S-OFF fit into this whole picture
apologise for the noobness in advance
Cheers
K

The Rom you choose is down to own personal preference, each has their benefits but again that is down to the user. As you’ve “read the forum top to bottom” you will know the Roms available and how stable they are for your device, as that is normally stated in each OP along with installation procedure and requirements e.g. cm11 requires that must have a custom recovery installed that allows SELinux (please see JMZ's Recovery thread with SELinux support for 4.4 KitKat in Original android dev) .As for guides on root - there are plenty step by step guides and walkthroughs on the Q&A Thread. Forget about S-off for now (search Google for ”what is s-off?”) SO... Find the Rom that suits you best (**optional**donate to dev & click thanks if you like their hard work and commitment). Read its requirements and installation procedure and follow exactly. This also applies on rooting/ unlocking bootloader. The main thing to remember is to Always read things twice and follow the instructions step by step.

Thanks for your reply.
I suppose I was just looking for some friendly opinions on people who have tried the various options out there. It's my daily phone so cant be without it in case something stuffs up.
Regarding the "JMZ's Recovery thread with SELinux support for 4.4 KitKat" for h8drift's C11 .. I presume that is the TWRP version 2.6.3.0 .. have already grabbed it available on this thread ..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2418938&page=5 ?
Unfortunately am not allowed to post in that thread and I just want to get things right in my head before I start .. so its
1. Unlock bootloader (via HTC)
2. Install Custom Recover (from above)
3. Flash ROM
4. Install Gapps
done?
Just out of interest when is a fastboot required? .. in this case does the kernel required come via twrp?

Follow this step by step http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2601741. Flash the jmz recovery as you stated in above post, also use latest supersu and latest cm11 link... If that's the rom your planning on using. Btw KitKat is rolling out as an OTA very soon so if you don't feel confident rooting just wait. Good luck

Thanks for that link - is exactly what I was looking for. Everything in one place!
There doesn't seem to be anything like it here in the mini section.
I know about the 4.4 release .. i actually just asked that question somewhere else .. if CM11 is all that necessary once the 4.4 is rolled out to all devices ... what do you think?

Sorry one more Q.. is enabling USB Debugging option necessary?

It's a developer tool.
"USB Debugging is intended for development purposes only. It can be used to copy data between your computer and your device, install applications on your device without notification, and read log data

the more Roms equals more choice. The OTA 4.4 release will obviously be stock so will be full of bloat, cm¹¹ is slim and smooth but will not have blinkfeed
If your running Windows 8 on pc you may encounter problems with ADB

Just waiting for CM11 to be more stable before I flash ... no speakerphone in call is a bit of a deal breaker ..

Hybrid is nice and fast. I tried CM11 but its not ready for me. It loses net connection and i need to reenter pin. Will test newer versions.

I liked hybrid also, found battery was quite average though ... None of these roms seem to handle the lock screen well .. ie still sensed

Hmm. I uploaded Smart Launcher 2 and froze Apex.
Battery started work longer
And made some autorun fixes.
I recommend to upload Hybrid and change a little bit

take it easy, u might hurt ur self
ok its not quite in the right place, but no need to bite his head off.
anyway, in answer to your question, the way i removed the branding from my vodafone DS was this
http://revolutionary.io/ download this tool and follow its instructions, this will root your phone and give you a recovery tool that will allow you to flash a new ROM onto your phone.
With the phone rooted, you will be able to back up your data using an app from the market. Titanium Backup is the usual favorite.
EDIT : may be wrong about it providing root, I personally skipped the backup step as I had no data to lose, but if that is the case there are guides in the forums for obtaining root access
next look through this forum to find a ROM that suits your needs, from the sound of things you want the stock one, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1230029 should suit you.
download the zip file and transfer it to your SD card.
next you need to reboot into your recovery mode by turning the phone off, then hold the vol down button and power button together and selecting recovery from the menu
finally use the volume buttons to select install zip from SD card, and point it at your downloaded rom. it may take a few mins so allow it to finish then select reboot phone.
again this first boot may take a little time, but once its up you should have a debranded ROM as if you had just bought the phone new.
Add the details for your google account and redownload your backup app so you can restore your data and you are good to go
thank you very much for your help,
I shall give it a try,
by the way, will be able to install official updates on it, or will I have to stick with custom ROMs for ever?
thanks again

Nooo, not forever. Just until you get a new device
But seriously: Custom roms don't work with official updates. The trick is that most of the custom rom developers provide their own flashable updates for their roms. The difference is in the way you perform the update. There are even fairly developed custom roms, like MIUI, which have their own over-the-air updates (actually more often than official updates are coming.)
EDIT: In fact, you can switch back to a stock rom anytime and get the official updates back.

although a lot of effort had been put into creating a lot of resources which are very user friendly, so it's quiet frustrating when they aren't even looked at.
Plus development is for just that, which is why the moderator moved the thread.

Once unlocked, i.e. rooted, you can use titanium backup or a root file explorer to uninstall the apps you don't need from the rom you are running atm.

Well, again: read around the forum a little, please. There is a sticky thread right on the top of the development section, called ROMS/RECOVERY/ROOT etc. It's a must read for newcomers. Very useful thread. There you find a link to a collection of stock roms. These are distributed as .exe files, so you can run them in windows and a simple-to-use installer will pop up and help you with pushing the stock rom to your phone. It is advisable that you double check that you are flashing the rom you really want. Someone here will help you to choose the right one.
EDIT: By the way in the general section (where we are now with this thread) there is also a very useful sticky. It's called Guide for Newcomers to Android. Seriously, it's a good read, given that you own an Android phone...

OK man, I will do that, thanks for the tips
Thanks chris5s, Ill definitely give it a shot.
This tool would help to get rid of the annoying Orange splash screen, and other useless apps could be removed as stated before.
Of course, best way is to install generic HTC European rom or custom rom of your choice.
Aforementioned tool would also help install roms, radios, etc, of your choice.
Good luck
Peace
Edit: sorry, Android flasher won't help install roms, but will help with installing custom recovery - Ext4 or Clockwork Mod - essential in s-off/rooted flashing.

[Q] Best ROM for Miro (rooted and bootloader unlocked) - is it even possible?

Not so long ago I was total noob for Android, few posts later and nothing has changed :victory: JK off course, the truth is that I learned some basic stuff (rooting, unlocking bootloader, difference between SU and regular user, customization and CWM etc.) and all that thanks to you guys - god bless YouTube, inetrnet and XDA developers! :highfive:
Now the probing questions:
1. Is it possible to flash custom ROM's to Miro with bootloader locked (currently stock)?
2. Which one would suit me best (gaming and/or performance is a MUST!)?
3. What to install mod other then CWM (cuzz it's not supported by phone)?
Thx guys, I'll make sure to thank each and every one of y'all!
1. Yes u can always use stock based roms without unlocking.
2. My personal opinion is that The ultrabeast rom has great gaming performance. Im using it currently.
3. Didn't get your question.

In order to flash the ROM onto device I need some Mod and ClokWork Mod is not supported by Miro (for fastboot etc.) so which one should I choose?
Is there any way u could send me a download link and instructions for that ROM?
So many question marks....
Who told you that cwm does not work for miro? It works very well.
There is a separate thread for that.did you try to search? Just go to the android development section. There you will find both cwm and twrp. Install whatever you want. I prefer cwm.
And you will also find the rom alongwith instructions there only.

Do not post questions which indicates "Which is the BEST ROM" or such issues. It's strictly against the XDA Rules.
The point of the forum is try out different ROMs available in the development section. So browse around and try and see it yourself.

Just got my N5 and I have a few questions

Since Im a complete newbie I wanted to ask a few questions before doing anything stupid.
1. I noticed people are already posting new ROMs and kernels. Do I need them? I mean, I like the stock and everything but there are a few things I can't do. Why do YOU root and change ROMs?
2. I found a lot of kernels, and I understood that it can improve my performance and battery life. I would very much like to improve my battery life. The thing is, I don't know how. I do know that people are UVing and OCing their CPU, etc but what can a noob do who is not only a noob but also just bought a phone that the rooting thing is new to it. So no everything is fully developed, optimized and ready to go in a few clicks. Do I still need to wait a couple more weeks to change my kernel? I always read kernel threads and their changelogs but it is like jibarish to me. I can't even decide which one to pick.
3. I would really like to change my icons in the quick settings panel. Am I able to do that? How?
4. I tried setting Hebrew as my default language but that just moves the whole interface left. Because in Hebrew we write right to left. It wasn't like this when I had my GS3. I used a few CM Roms on my s3 and they were fine until the update to 4.3. Then it did the same thing on the S3 but I didn't know it would be like this on the N5. Is it something that can be fixed? Can I email Google or call them about this?
5. Is there anyone who is willing to recommend personally some ROMs, mods, apps or any modifications at all?
Thank you in advance!

1 & 2 - I recommend reading the FAQ first, stickied at the top of this Q&A Section. This should give you a good starting knowledge
3 - would need an AOSP based ROM with this feature (CM / AOKP perhaps?)
4 - sorry, can't help
5 - No. This is against what XDA stands for. Read "No best rom threads" sticky in this forum.
1. All your answers can be found here for why you should root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2510966 or http://lifehacker.com/top-10-reasons-to-root-your-android-phone-1079161983
2. Franco Kernel is very friendly to use and once rooted everything can be done from his paid google play app. check it out
3. Once rooted and with customer rom installed like cyanogenmod or paranoid android the themes you download from the google play store will sometimes change the settings icons too
4. i believe cyanogen mod roms have a good hebrew compatibility
5. Just start off very simply. use the cyanogenmod installer from the playstore and wait for the nexus 5 to become compatible. wait for the device to get into more peoples hands and youll see an influx of great roms and mods
good luck and welcome to the nexus community.

That said, De-odexed roms are easier to modifiy so I flashed one of those

Go to settings > About > tap build version 10 times to enable developer options.
Go in to developer options and you can change the screen alignment.
I second the FAQ at the top of this forum. Incredibly helpful and informative for anyone new to rooting. That should have everything you need, but I guess if I were to add anything to what the above guys (or girls) said, it would be to root FIRST before playing around with your N5 too much. Not sure if it's really obvious or not yet, but the rooting process will result in wiping your device, so it's generally recommended to get that out of the way.
That being said, once you're rooted, I can't recommend Titanium Backup enough for making sure all your stuff is available after any future ROM changes.
Lastly, welcome to the Nexus family =) Glad to have ya

Its just easier. Every system app has an .odex file too that requires extra modification by a themer / developer. Deodexed systems don't need that

If you do not care for Samnusmg stock, then I would suggest that you flash the Carbon ROM KitKat 4.4.2. This ROM is AOSP but is like cream cheese - smooooth and bug free. I have a N8013. Samsung based KitKat is a really poor effort from Samsung. It is quite average...
If you are bent on having Sam stock, try Gnabo ROM. Actually, try carl1961's method here first to get an idea of KK on the device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2770009 .
It is a very good starting point. Be careful what recovery you flash. For all I have suggested, Philz advanced CWM recovery works smoothly.....Flash this first then theROM.
Good luck!

My device has become very slow but I am a downloading fool. What programs (many I have are duplicates with slightly differing features,) from file managers, to apk's utilized by most are the power hoarders?
Where can I find a copy of KitKat that is working, and AOSP as I am assuming I have to install that instead of the aroma installer I have used.
I look forward to all your help. A sort of perplexed person in Philadelphia.
I am running kit kat on my 8013 and it works great. Find "Gnabo rom" thread on xda.

Galaxy Note GT - N8013 unlock software is not listed the N8000 is; will it work?
I am begging for information to let me restore my tablet to its factory default state. As you can tell from below, I have used two 64 gig mem cards, and have only 2 gig of the 16 gig of internal storage left as I am an electronic tidbit hoarder. I want to upgrade my tablet and have a buyer if I restore the tablet to its pre purchase state. Please help as this device is not listed on GalaxyUnlocker. The closest device is the samsung N8000 ..... Any advices, opinions, hints, or feelings will all be tried.
Please help the hoarder in Philadelphia
Thank you

Get stock firmware from Samsung or Sammobile.com . and flash with ODIN.
Unfortunately Samsung will not be releasing any updates past 4.1.2 for the gt-n8013. They have come to the conclusion that anyone in north america does not deserve an update and will never release the update for the tablet even though they had an official press release stating we would get the update.
They don't care that you paid a premium and promised updates for this tablet. They expect you to buy a new tablet every year to get any android updates!
Two words! LEAVE SAMSUNG!

So can this be installed without a pc
Pretty sure you need a pc to get the custom recovery installed.
Really then what does the cwm recovery app do?

Any custom recovery needs to be designed to Work for your specific device. It may be possible to install a custom recovery with an app but you should definately do lots of reading before you attempt it.

No "Development" in Settings
I'm pretty new to this, so have patience with me.
Just installed KitKat 4.4.2 on my GT-N8013. I wanted to tick the USB Debugging" checkbox, but there is no development section in the settings.
Am I missing something ?
Yes you are. In order activate the developer section you have to tap on build number about 7 or so times. That will make it appear.

MD5?? sounds like a bad download I might be wrong though, try downloading the ROM again if you still have the problem change your recovery to CWM
make sure the rom size u downloaded is correct 700MB++, my first download is just around 500MB, and i need to use diff link to download again.
I don't want to update my bootloader to kitkat, still is 4.1.2. (with ARHD).
If I flash Gnabo ROM and Boeffla-Kernel, will Wifi work?

Do you guys think there will ever be a working version of lollypop for our divides?
Appologies, i know its of topic. But this is probably the busiest n80xx thread going, and who's going to have a better opinion than us =)

BlueTooth Tethering is connected but no internet
Hello,
I just moved over to this ROM V7 on my n-8013, and it's fantastic. I have an issue with Bluetooth tethering going thru my phone, the setting show it as connected (paired and connected to device for internet access) however there is no internet. The Browser prompts with " Wi-Fi connection required. Connect to Wi-Fi network and try again".
Note that WiFI tethering works fine. I prefer Bluetooth to help mask the tethering from the carrier.
Previous to Gnabo i was on another 4.4.4 based ROM where this BT tethering did work(other things did not)..
Any Ideas? I have seen dome references to a possible KK issue but it's not clear.
Thank You.
Update: if I do not flash the RPS bluetooth tethering works fine. I tried flashing be of RPS, but still had the tetherING issue.
Where is the Tab-4 Messaging App
Thanks for the new ROM- Much appreciated!
The change log talked about a Tab-4 Messaging App., but I cant find it. Is there something I need to do to activate it? I have a GT-N8013.
BTW, I did a dirty flash from Gnabo 6.5 and also lost root an WIFI on flash. Reflashing Boeffla fixed both problems...

For those who have troubles using screen mirroring with custom kernels add "wlan.wfd.hdcp=disable" in your build.prop and restart. Screen mirroring should work fine now, even with custom kernel.
For those who didn't know.

Finding the download for boeffla is a little confusing. From the op in his thread follow the link to his site. From there you see listed all the versions he supports. But you can't download from that list. Go to the top of the page left column and you will see the download option. That will take you to all the various downloads. Then just pick the one you need.
