The recent update of Google Play Services (background update) has led to horrible battery life. Has anyone else experienced this?

yes.
go to your main phone settings, location, press google location reporting, disable location reporting and history. that shoukd take care of the extra battery drain, it did for me as soon as i disabled that setting.

Yea I been researching on this left n right, but if I do that, it messes with my weather location. Is there a way to go to a previous version of Google Play Services that didn't have this issue?

really? it doesnt mess with my weather location, nor google nows weather for me. i guess if you grab a previous apk of the play services, replace the newer version and reboot, maybe. but i think itll just update itself again.

That's odd. When I try to go to Maps after I turn off google location reporting, my lil location blue dot is gone. And when I try to press on the locate/center-in icon, it just says "Waiting for location"
**EDIT** rebooted phone and now it's working. I'll see if I still get the annoying drain.

Well, it's waiting for the GPS to get a fix.

Not sure if related, but "Android System" battery usage for me is higher than what it normally is. Before, it would sit around 10-12% on the battery list, now the norm seems to be 16-20%.
Are you guys seeing that too?

Google services draining so much battery.

So ive been using PA 4.3 for a couple of days now and ive noticed that google services is using up my battery. I do have location services on, only have GPS satellites ticked and WiFi & Mobile network location unticked. Is there any other way of google services to stop draining my battery? I did turn off Location services for 1 day and to be honest battery life didnt change..

EDIT 1: Managed to fix google services, all i did was update the gapps then google services never came back up. Still have GPS on.
EDIT 2: Encounter another problem after installed new gapps Android system use to use 70% of my battery but now its only under 10%. Battery life amazing so far! GPS still on. I didnt freeze anything. I didnt use any app to fix these issues.

I've read about this same issue on different ROMs and phones recently. We all have to remember that the 4.3 ROMs are still in the very early stages and bugs like this are to be expected but will be clearing up soon. In the meantime, depending on how much you rely on Google services, this might be useful to you:

If I had a dollar for every time I said that, I'd be making money in a very weird way.
Its a known issue.. Freezing Google service might solve it.. And share me that dollah!!

I would use App Ops that are baked into some ROMs (if using custom ROM with this addition) or Play Store the App Ops to see if, by using root, you can access this feature to restrict the Location for the wallet app.
Turning off NFC might help as well.

Just looked it up and it's not Google Wallet itself that is causing the issue, rather over all location services. You'll probably want to read a bit on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48051661

I have the same problem and it turns out because Google Wallet have "Offers", which always use Location Services (GPS, Wifi, etc.) to find the "relevant" offers (discounts, etc.) in your area.
I use Google Wallet for payment, but I do NOT need the "Offers" feature. In prior version of Google Wallet, I believe the "Offers" feature is disabled. However, now it is FORCED upon you. I don't see any settings in the Google Wallet app to disable "Offers". Anyone know?

And just turn off location to everything you don't want having the access. It's a great battery saver too!

I have used AppsOps to turn off Location Reporting for Google Wallet, but it seems something is still running that cause Google Wallet to keep causing this issue.
On a sidenote, I froze Google+. It still show up in App Ops for some reason and I see under "Location", it said it was last accessed 4 days ago. Thing is, Google+ is frozen and I got th ephone 2 weeks ago. So something is still running even if the app is in this state. I ended up uninstallign Google+
So I don't know if Google Wallet have the same thing...
It stopped happening after I finished setting up my account with a credit card and whatnot.

I know what you mean, was annoying to get pop-up offers when driving around. Looking into it, with Wallet open and on the main screen touch the 3 bar icon in the upper left. Hit " settings" then "notifications". On this screen just make sure "nearby items" is switched off (2nd option to the bottom). I hope this helps!

I do have it on.
Turn it off. Clear cache of play services. Power off (not reboot) give it half a minute and power on.
Also what version of play services is installed?

I got version: 8.3.00 (2353383-248)
Okay, so it looks like clearing the cache of play services fixed the issue.
Thanks
Let's hope it stays that way! Damn Google
How's it been since? Play services no longer at the top of the list?

Lazy GPS ?

Hey,
Something's wrong with the HTC U11 GPS, and it is not my unit because I had two units and both behave the same way.
When I review my chronology in Google Maps, and see the routes from my days, what I see are straight lines going through streets and roads instead of a precise tracking. It looks like the phone is taking position samples not often enough.

Any reason why this happens? Is that a GPS issue, or software?
I am guessing the U11 saves battery minimizing stuff like this?
Any idea on how to solve it?
Thank you.!

Not with apps that track like running stuff and so.. I'll try, but my wife's Xiaomi A1 does the job perfectly in Google Maps, I am pretty sure HTC minimizes the use of the GPS module to save battery..

I saw the same thing in the Fitbit app. I know it always happens if battery saver is on. I think it was hit or miss without battery saver but its been a while.
Turn battery saving off and use high accuracy under location settings and make sure google location settings are correct.
If you have any apps like HTC boost+ that shuts apps down then omit Google maps + Google play services from the list so they can have free reign.

how do I find the app behind the wakelock ?

currently my S20FE 5G is running a rooted stock based custom rom that has a few OneUI 4 elements in it somewhere, no idea what those actually are.
I'm getting some steep battery drain but otherwise I'm quite happy with the rom and want to keep it.
I've got a partial wakelock called VK_WakeLock, it's keeping the phone from sleeping when the screen is off. I searched for a while and can't find a method that would help me find the app that's causing it or even better the specific service or process.
if we know the name of a wakelock is there any terminal commands or apps that could lead me to a package / process name ?

I have background data off, I have a firewall that keeps the majority of apps without internet. most of my user apps (which aren't involved) don't do background stuff, so basically I've got no idea right now.

it hasn't been a battery drain for me previously, if it was an update that brought this effect the internet would be full of posts regarding it. as it stands their are only a handful of search results for VK_WakeLock.

Well you know how I feel about updates...
You can try making sure all system apps are updated or roll them back to their factory load versions.
Clear system cache. Clear system app caches or data.
Find the root cause. You need to ID that apk responsible for your mystery name.
or
Factory reset and hope that gets it.
This is why I don't update. Cleaning up an update mess is time consuming.
