T-Mobile RMA - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In case I need to RMA my phone I bought my phone from T-Mobile do I just go from Google RMA process and do they still accept it with the MEID sticker peeled off?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Nope, go to T-Mobile. The Google RMA is for Google Play purchases only. The sticker on the back doesn't matter.

You can't go to Google. You have to use tmobile and get a refurb.

Slight correction. You can go to Google but for convenience Tmobile should be your first point of contact.

No you can't. I've tried. They'll help you troubleshoot, but won't replace the phone. Tmobile or LG needs to do that. LG takes about 3 weeks and isn't free, so I didn't even say that.

Hmmm. Thought since all versions are universal Google would help. I was always directed to HTC when Tmobile had exhausted their options.

Yeah that's pretty sketchy of Google. T-Mobile is going to get the stock from Google anyway? Doesn't make sense to go through carrier than to google.

Exactly. When tmobile runs out of options, it's redirected to the phone's manufacturer. Google isn't the manufacturer. LG is, but their CS is terrible and you have to pay for shipping both ways.

How to activate a nexus 5 bought thru Google play on T mobile

Hey all. This may sound like a noob question but I've been on sprint for YEARS and I'm totally new to t mobile and gsm devices (I'm thrilled about the change tho). Anyhow, I'm wondering, what's the process to activate a nexus 5 that I buy thru Google play onto t mobile? T mobile hasn't started selling it yet and I'd like to order it NOW. I already have a t mobile Sim card and it fits/works with the nexus 4. What else besides just popping the Sim card in would I have to do?
Thanks in advance!

That's about it, pop it in and turn it on. Should work right off the bat.

H*ly cr*p! Are you serious? It's that easy? Why the hell would anyone wait for t mobile to start selling it? Also, if I get the device from Google BEFORE t mobile starts selling it, you think it'll still work on the network?
Thanks a lot.

This is awesome news. I just have ONE more concern. If it's not shipping for weeks or something, will Google charge my credit card right away, or not until it ships?
And finally, what's the return policy? I don't wanna return it but if for whatever reason I can't sell my note 3 I may have to.
Thanks again guys!

They will not charge you until it actually ships.
They have a 15 day return policy, but if there is nothing wrong with it you'll pay return shipping.
I ordered it. Yay!!!!! I've never ordered a nexus device straight from Google. So exciting!!!!

This has been answered about 4 times this week alone. All Nexus 5's are unlocked! Your Nexus 5 is the same D820 model that the Google Play Store sell. T-Mobile has not made any modifications to it. No carrier bloatware, it's not carrier locked, no T-Mobile WiFi calling installed, etc.
It's 100% unlocked and 100% the same as the one on the Play Store! Pure Google!

The boot loader is actually locked. Unlocking it is the same as the Play Store model/version. Or if you just want root look for CF-Autoroot.

don't use chainfire to root your phone follow the sticky in general.
There is no physical/software difference between the two. The only thing special about it is that your phone is flagged as a T-Mobile device since T-Mobile knows your serial number (or some other identification number). AFAIK, this allows you to download the t-mobile voicemail app from the play store.

So if I get the device off Google play website I won't be able to use my T-Mobile insurance if something goes wrong with the device? I would save $50 if purchased from google

I believe you will still be able to utilize T-Mobile's insurance. Its not like its an At&t or Sprint specific phone then it would be understandable why T-Mobile won't cover it. T-Mobile sells the very same phone as the one on the Play Store so it shouldn't be an issue.
Note: If you do decide to buy the Nexus 5 from the Play Store then you'll be covered under a manufacturers warranty. Its not exactly the same as T-Mobile's insurance but it will cover any software and/or hardware defects (minus a cracked screen or water damage).

In the past, when I was with T-Mobile I used to always get phones off of Craigslist and I would sometimes send them to T-Mobile for a warranty exchange. As far as I know the insurance is transferable from device to device. Of course it won't be if you have an At&t branded device but if T-Mobile has the device in their lineup then I don't see why they wouldn't honor it and give you another one if you pay monthly for their insurance service.

That's correct, the insurance is attached to the line, not the phone.

It could still work, we'd need someone to test. The M7 developer edition supported T-Mobile but only on 3G/FauxG. But flashing the T-Mobile radio to it enabled LTE connectivity.

Possibly. But the spec sheet for our model doesn't mention the T-Mobile compatibility we've seen so far. I wouldn't be even slightly surprised if HTC just used software/firmware to disable bands (or maybe not at all) in order to avoid making 5+ different pieces of hardware.

According to the website, yes. But it very likely has the CDMA radio hardware in there in order to save HTC the cost of manufacturing multiple devices. Much like how our locked model can connect to T-Mobile LTE, though you will find no mention of those bands being supported.

[Q] Is it worth it to buy a Nexus 5 with a cracked screen off CL?

I've been wanting a Nexus 5 for a long time but I haven't had the cash to get a new one. I came across one on CL today with a cracked screen (click for picture) for $125. Is it worth it? He said it's only been used for about 2 weeks (which was 2 weeks ago) and a new screen will run me $100. So that puts me out $225. Is it worth it?
Depends on if it's a legit phone or not. Many people have been scammed into buying a stolen phone or the imei is turned in after purchase for insurance fraud.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but blacklisting a stolen phone is carrier specific, right? I'm on ATT and ATT doesn't carry the nexus 5 so the device will work, regardless of blacklisted IMEI, yes?

Blacklisted phones are usually country wide, all carriers.
And a phone with a broken screen is certainly being sold as is. Well that means anything else could be wrong too....and since its as is....oh well. Outta luck. Lol
Save your money up....buy one that works before you shell out anything. I know what you're looking at is cheap....but if it never works, its money burnt. You only need 100 or so more for a working phone...based in the $225 you expect to spend on this one. ?

Malware?

My phone is rooted, has CM11, and also have a badly cracked screen/digitizer. I'm debating if it's malware or just the digitizer. I've ran AVG and Malwarebytes and nothing shows up. Coming here to see what you guys think.
