Working only while charging, battery or what - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, a friend of mine got a nexus s and the phone is working well while its connected to the charger or to PC, but when I unplug it everything lags. I can't do anything on the phone, nothing responses. If I plug it again, it runs as it should. I managed to unlock it and install CM11, but absolutely the same result. The bootloader launches well even while not connected, recovery starts too but its very laggy. If I try to start it normal, the nexus starts in the download mode(yellow android with a shovel). How do you think, the battery does not have enough power to maintain the OS, but it can start the bootloader and the recovery because they need less power? I tried charging it whole night, even charged it with nexus 7 charger which is bigger, but the same. Also, when connected and in recovery, the battery shows 75+ and if I unplug it it goes to 3-6+, could it be software issue and can I test it somehow...

Get back to stock. Put a Custom ROM again. Also, try a different battery. Let's see what the results are.

Tried another battery, the same result, which makes me think that the problem isn't the battery. Also, flashed stock GB bootloader, radio, system, user data and then the phone rebooted well. Removed the cable and its working well, except the front camera which I found not working. Then I turned the phone off and the power button does nothing, i can only enter in bootloader and reboot from there. Another thing I noticed, if I remove the battery and insert it again, no matter what I do (normal, or power+volume up) the phone boots in download mode when the bootloader is unlocked, and if its locked the phone boots only into the unlock- bootloader screen which is unresponsive. However, if its plugged in, it boots normaly and then works ok even when unplugged... Really cant find a solution
P.S. this is only with gb, i installed cm11 later and cant use it without cable, just like in the beginning...

Phone will not stay booted, shuts off and shows an empty battery with a circle in it.

This is in relation to my other thread, however I created a new one because the title of there other is no longer valid. I can reboot into recovery and download mode. I have flashed everything that was recommended through odin. Everything appears to be back to stock , however the phone only boots when on the charger. Sometimes it stays booted for a few minutes and sometimes it remains booted for only a second. When it shuts off a blank battery appears with a circle in the middle. I tried a charged battery at verizon and it did the same. It is as if the phone does not recognize the battery. This happened yesterday when I was using gps. It just shut off and the problem that I just explained began.

Maybe just get it replaced? as long as its all stock, you should be fine
I maybe will have to. Is there anyway I can be 100 % sure that it is stock if I cant even get the phone to boot up? When I get into download mode the flash counter is not tripped and it says official. I can not afford to have Verizon charge me 600. Do they just charge you out of the blue without consulting with you?

Bump. Anyone? Donation for anyone who can get me back up and running.
Have you tried the phone with a DIFFERENT battery? Maybe take it to the store and get them to let you use one and if it works I would think they owe you a replacement battery. If it does the same with a different battery then I would get the phone replaced. If the flash counter is not tripped, and it says official in d/l mode I don't think you should have any issues with a replacement.
Kinda lame response but try cleaning the battery terminals. I have had a phone quit working like that and used a pencil eraser to scrub it clean and it worked after that.

[Q] Atrix 2 wont boot up, battery issues?

Hi guys,
I just recently flashed my phone to the Romulus rom, and its been going great. There have been a few hiccups but nothing too big, except for 2 things:
1. Whenever the phone is plugged in, the lockscreen becomes unresponsive. When i try putting in my unlock pattern, it only allows about 2 dots max before it thinks i have lifted my finger of the screen. To fully enter the pattern i have to unplug it, enter the pattern then reconnect the charger. Anyone else had this, or know of a fix?
2. This is the major one. For some reason, when my phone turns off due to low battery, the phone just wont come on, no matter how much i charge it. It gets stuck in a bootloop at the moto logo. Its happened twice now, the first time i somehow got it working by using the charger to turn it on, then unplugging and pressing the power button immediately at the logo. However yesterday this isnt working. When i do that, at times it boots up, but then when it gets to the lock screen it tells me to connect the charger, then shuts down again. The battery icon is red with an X accros the symbol. Does this mean that its not detecting the battery? How would i fix this?
Cheers for your help

First off mate, all questions go in our Q&A Section, so just keep that in mind going forward.
Now, your 1st question regarding the touch screen's responsiveness while trying to unlock with password, I've experienced this myself, and while charging. Though I'm not really sure what causes this, to be truthful. I've found though, that sometimes locking and unlocking will get things to cooperate. I doubt it there's anything to cause concern with any hardware (digitizer) since you don't mention this as being an issue outside the unlocking of the device while charging. Mine was sporadic, and I eventually grew tiresome of the pattern unlock, and did away with it altogether. Perhaps someone else could chime in here with a better explanation as to why this happens. (?)
Now, to your more 'serious' issue. Seeing as how you have Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM) installed, you never want to allow your device to power down at the low battery state. You're lucky that you can at least -or at least have- been able to boot after a low power shut down. You may need to FXZ back to stock, if the phone will not boot at all. Can you get into AP Fastboot by pressing and holding AT THE SAME TIME the volume up +volume down + power buttons? If so, you can restore to stock and get yourself out of the soft brick. Here is a great thread with discussions by Fall of Enosis and jimbridgman, I suggest you read through this:

Edit: Also i'm on SCV7 so it's nothing to do with the rom.
For your second Q...Try to clear battery stats on CWM?? Sometimes when u flash a new rom u need to clear those stats...So give it a shot and let us know what happened.

This won't do anything for the OP's inability to boot. That's why I said that likely his best bet is to see if he can boot into AP Fastboot, so that he may be able to FXZ back to stock...

Cheers for the heads up, its not exactly a question, but I've seen questions on this board before so i thought that was ok.
Thing is, its not that it wont boot, it boots after i charge it for a while, but it states that the charger is not connected each time it boots, then shuts down.
Why should we not allow it to go into a low battery state when on CWM? I also set CWM recovery to start at each boot, and i have backups of just before and after i flashed the phone. Cant i just restore a previous backup rather than flash to stock?
And with the battery reset, doesnt clear any user data yeah? I have alot of stuff i would hate to lose

Okay, I thought from the thread title that at some point, the phone wouldn't boot after a low power shut down. If the phone is saying that it isn't recognizing the battery while charging, you might have some luck trying the methods I overview in THIS POST. The battery will NOT charge while in CWM Recovery, nor will it charge while in AP Fastboot. This is why it is imperative that you not allow the phone to get to such a low power stage, especially when attempting a flash. You can certainly restore via CWM either of the backups that you have, and see if the problem clears up. And with a battery stats reset, nothing is wiped except the battery statistics. All of your user data, applications, settings, etc. will remain in tact. Hope this helps...

The battery reset actually worked! I had to charge it for quite a while on the usb charger since it wouldnt charge on the mains charger. Once it was on i made a backup then cleared the battery stats, and now it detects the mains charger.
Cheers for your help guys i still dont get why it wouldnt charge on the mains charger when the battery was low, even though before it would charge before when the battery wasnt...

[Q] Please Help - AT&T Huawei-U8665

I have an AT&T Huawei-U8665 (Fusion 2 go-phone) that I rooted. I did not change out the stock rom or any other tweaks except for allowing root access. After I rooted it (about a week ago), after a few days of use, it started getting stuck in a reboot-loop. I had to reset user data to get it to stop. After another two days of using it, same thing - reboot-loop, reset user data. However, this time when SuperSu asked where to update the binary too, TWRP or normal, I accidentally selected TWRP. The phone rebooted itself but will only go to the first screen (at&t logo) and then turn back off, then back to the first screen, then back off, repeatedly and non-stop.
Things I've tried:
Pulling out the battery (short amount of time, long amount of time), Power + Volume Up, Power + Volume Down. I've even taken the battery out and plugged the phone it - Every single one has the phone go to the at&t logo screen then back off, repeat...
Is there ANYTHING that will fix this???
Please help me if you can! Thanks!!

did you try to flash some custom rom or kernel ?
how much battery percentage you have?
sometimes it is due to the less battery power..
try charging your battery using master charger and after the battery is full then try turning your phone on.
if still dont work then try flashing the rom either stock rom or custom.
and which device r u using?

Thanks for the reply! It wont boot long enough to show the battery symbol, but I always keep my device charged (even though I know it isn't advised). Also, I can't get it into safe or recovery mode, only the purple screen (no matter which one I try). I've tried to use my pc to run fastboot but it just states "waiting on device" and I do have the proper drivers installed as well. I will keep it plugged in all night and try tomorrow. Hopefully it will charge while it flashes the at&t logo on and off. Thanks for the suggestions - I will definitely try again. And, if you think of anything else to try, I will definitely try that too! Oh, and the device is the Huawei-u8665 (at&t Fusion 2 go-phone that runs 2.3.6).

Dead Phone

Well the thing is..i've been using my HTC ONE S for a while now...
Then after a while i tried to root my phone via recovery.
I unlocked the bootloader successfully since when i boot on bootloader my phone said on the top of the screen "UNLOCKED".
Then when i tried to get to recovery...it was stuck on entering recovery..nothing happened.
Installed CWM v6 touch and non-touch same results.
I was going to try TWRP but i went to bed.
Next morning during the day my phone ran out of battery. i mean 0%
i tried to turn it on when i leave it on the charger like an hour.
after an hour the pone didnt boot up..it just dead.
the pc doesnt recognize it at all...the charger makes a "bip" everytime i plug in the phone the led blinks a couple of times before fade again
tried hard/soft reset, tried to put it on bootloader, pressed Vol - and Power button, i keep em pressed for like a minute and nothing happened.
It doesnt show up a Qualcomm dispositive. i mean is not bricked, i never installed a custom ROM/RUU/
he worked like a charm the entired day before ran out of battery.
Tried to replug the battery nothing happened same results.
Sometimes when i tryed to only press the power button the screen flash a bit and then dies.
At the end i let the phone the entire night charging(more than 12hours)
Same results......
my phone doesnt have warranty....

Run the OEM RUU first ( you need to know what network the phone is locked too and choose the matching RUU, should you have a few options to choose from then choose the highest number or latest version, if it's unlocked choose the HTC RUU again the latest or highest definition).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2094414
If all else fails ...
Send it back to HTC service centre. Best outcome they'll repair it for free, worst outcome they will tell you how much it'll cost to be repaired and if you choose not to repair then you have to pay P&P for device to be returned. The choice is yours!
Hope that helps.

When you mean you tried to replug the battery, does it mean you were able to open the casing of your oneS? It seems your problem is you have a bad battery, or else your battery is dead.

yeah i was able to open the phone, the battery is connected via pin to the motherboard (i though it was solder to the main base)
I'm going to try to charge the battery with an external charger, then plug in to the phone and see what happens.
Is all because of a bug on CWM....TWRP the best!

yes, as I can recall on the battery pin, you'll just have to connect the red and black pin to an external power supply, good luck mate! you can do it! :highfive:

S7 died, no response at all anymore. (Black screen)

Hello,
I am quite familar with samsung devices and flashing etc. but my friends phone died today I suppose. At some point it got stuck and got into a bootloop. After some reboots it tried to find a ota update.zip, but there was none. After some tries I got into download mode, but flashing a stock image (was stock before as well, never seen root or something) did help at first (it booted, we backupped some stuff) but at some point it got stuck into bootloop again.
This time, when going into recovery, it tried flashing a firmware again, however this ended badly (freeze while flashing). Now it's not even charging anymore. Not a single button combination is working (force reboot, recovery, download mode, ...) and when plugging into a power bank, it doesn't even charge anymore (power bank shows if a device is charging). So it's completely back and unnoticed by odin, adb or fastboot. Does anyone know this problem or have an idea, what we could try? My last idea would be to test a wireless charger, which i sadly do not have at hand.
Thanks!

If it's not showing any signs of life and will not charge then it's a hardware problem, you should start with the obvious like the usb connector. You are going to have to open the phone and check usb connection, battery connection etc. but it may be easier to take to repair shop.

but when it died the first time, i was able to flash the stock image; after it rebooted, it was charging perfectly fine until it died again. from that point on, i was not able to get any sign of life anymore... maybe something crashed that badly and it's still running and i have to wait for the battery to completely drain, so it can do something again? or is the charging process completely hardware dependent, so a crash shouldnt do anything?

the way to test if it has power but blank screen is to hold power+volume down+home. If it has power it will turn off and boot into download mode
After the Forst Crash all such combinations didnt Seen to work either. Once odin recognized is while having a black screen. At that point I flashed stock :/ but still, not even the led was showing something
