[Q] I need spoof a wifi connection while using 3g/4g - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There is an app called my3g for iPhones that tricks apps into thinking you are connected to a wifi connection, but really you are using your data connection. Is there an app or modification that i could do to my nexus 5 that will allow me to make apps, or even my phone believe that it is connected to WIFI and not my Data plan?
I cannot find any apps in the store or threads that help in any way other than asking the completely helpful question "Why would you want to do this"
This can be useful in many ways You are lucky that you have yet to need to do this.
PS: I've tried 5+ apps to make a hotspot and connect to it. So my conclusion is you cannot connect to your own hotspot. Reverse usb tether is not an option

It might be an impulse but most people ask questions when they want to know things. Good effort though

I guess you could change the network signal icon into a wifi meter?

Also, I also searched for how to Wifi Tether, many threads gave me different answers, so I decided to ask you guys on here, how to Wifi Tether?
Is Wifi tethering like being able to use Wifi from anywhere, withouting having to be around a wireless router?
If so, how can you do this Wifi Tehtering?

Wif tethering is where you give other devices Wifi from your phone. Most ROM have it built in but some you need to edit something.

No tether apps on market (Verizon)

So as we all might be aware of: Verizon has blocked all tethering apps from the Android Market...
I started this post to see your thoughts and ask this: does using a custom ROM let you access those apps from the market???
Or is there no way around this???
(I know about applanet BTW)

No.
But you can still easily sideload apps.

Thanks for the FYI... I will keep that in mind
There are some Roms that come wirh wireless tether. Look at the Roms and kernel forum. I know I saw one but can't remember which one it was.

I don't think it's right for Verizon to be able to block any applications from the Market for any reason. If Google wants to remove malicious applications, that's one thing; but censoring our ability to download what we want just pisses me off.

I don't disagree, but get used to it. Google is going to be bending over for the carriers in order to push Android.

I think Verizon has the right to block apps that will allow or aid people in violating their Terms Of service (VZW's TOS for the smart phone data plan says it doesn't cover tethering, if you want to tether you must purchase a tethering plan)
and before anyone starts... there are MANY MANY other threads already discussing tethering without paying for it, "data is data", its right/wrong, etc...
Now, once VZW switches to tiered data plans with caps and overages, then I see no reason for them to disallow these type of apps, and still have that clause in their TOS... because at that point, if you use enough data to go over your tier's limit, you're gonna pay for it anyway...

Their idea of a reasonable cap rates are crazy.... Until they offer a reasonably priced unlimited plan I will continue to use data at the same rate my phone will anyway, just on a larger screen....
I like Verizon, been using them over 10 years, they suck now, they bully their customers around too much anymore just because they are big red... Its a shame they are still the best company out there.

From Android Central:
Update: As several have mentioned, it's quite possible to keep carriers from meddling with your Android Market experience. If you have an AT&T phone, you can pop the SIM card out and use Wifi to browse the Market; and enabling Airplane Mode, then turning on Wifi works for both AT&T and Verizon phones.
So if you turn on Airplane Mode and use the Market with a Wifi connection, all the apps should be there ready to download and install.
It's not just verizon wanting applications removed:
So why was Gensoid taken down? According to the developer, it was at the request of Sega. They must have contacted Google and gotten the emulator taken off the market. What exactly Sega claimed in order to take it down isn't know as Google usually isn't forthcoming with details, just general overviews, when asked. The next question is, why now?

My only problem with barnacle is that is only does WEP whereas the mobile hotspot does WPA.
We can still use the default wifi app. Other than that I wouldn't tether for a while until we know what verizon plans on doing. I wouldnt be surprised to see them take a big stance against tethering as it weighs down the network.
Remember people verizon is also a home internet service provider so when you tether and disband you're home isp verizon is losing out on both tethering and money from internet service providing.

Question about hotspot

I am currently using the shift-deck rom based on CM7. Is there away to see who is connected to you if you are using the hotspot? If not I think I will switch to wireless tether from the market but just thought maybe I was missing something. I use it mostly for when I am on my 3DS at work. Since I work at a public hospital I would like to see if someone connects. I suppose I could set up security but I like the ease and speed at which I can connect my devices quickly to an unsecure hotspot if I need.
Thanks
Why not set up security? Could have been done in the time it took to post this. Plus once you connect your devices and put in the code, it will remember it each time that it connects.
using hotspot
I'm not too well informed.
My phone is rooted.
I"ve read you can use it as a hotspot,
Was working and a guy wanted to connect to the net
so i turned on hotspot. Got an extra charge message.
Whats the proper way to allow others to connect?
Sorry about stealing the thread.

If your using the Stock ROM then you can use an app like "wireless tether" from the market. Some Sense ROMs have a built in hotspot hack that will allow you to use Sprints hotspot without charge. Wireless tethering is also built into most AOSP ROMs.
That wasn't his question though.
To answer your question, I think when I used to use the app, it would pop up telling me who wants to connect and I would have to give them permission.
Now I'm on decks rom and it doesn't do that. I just set up the security.

Enable Tethering on Inspire

Does anyone know how to enable tethering on the Inspire. On the LG Thrill I installed anycut and was able to check a box to enable it. Is there something similar for the Inspire?

please search as this is an ongoing topic and debate within these forums. In short, yes many of the ROMs on here allow for tethering but I will go no further as tethering without the tethering plan is technically against the contract you signed and I will not engage or help further this debate in another thread.

Hey, I have an Inspire that I use as a media phone. I never signed a contract with it, and it doesn't have service. I use it to flash roms and play around with the root stuff, and use it for media. Could you go into more detail for me about tethering? Strictly for education purposes.
You can't use it for tethering if you don't have a data plan. Hopefully you are now a bit more educated.

Tethering: To use cell data on a device that is not the phone.
Not anything you'll care about using the phone without a data connection.

google it, because we aren't going to help you here with that. You likely aren't trying to learn how the phone works if you aren't even going to do a simple search for the hundreds of apps on the market that can do this.

If you have wifi access you have no need to tether. If your not going to be truthful about your intentions. no one is going to help you.

Do you know what tethering is? You need a data plan on the phone so you can use that data connection either by usb, bluetooth, or hotspot to give an internet connection to another device such as your laptop or ipod. So what are you trying to get to work with wifi then? What app? If you have a custom ROM and IF YOU HAD A DATA PLAN ON THE PHONE, you don't need an app. It is built in most ROMs. You only need an app if you are running a stock ATT ROM.

Make phone apps believe its on 3g while using wifi.

Hi.
Is there any way/app or twisted method to make my phone and apps believe its on 3g and still use wifi connection for that purpose? I know the reverse is possible and easily available and do able. I would like to have an app or method that can do it. Please help me out if you know guys. Thanks!

I have few apps that need me to spend 3g data.. I don't want to!
So. I was wondering if this was possible.
Tried reverse thether.. No luck.

Theoretically it's possible. There is an Xposed module that makes apps think you're connected to wifi when you're not. It's useful in certain instances. For example connecting with PdaNet via bluetooth you get data. but some apps still look for a wifi or data connection to work. In theory, a similar module could be made (or the Fake Wifi Connection module modified) to do this, but I am unaware of such a thing that already exists.
What apps only work on cellular data and not wifi though? I've never come across one...
