[Q] Is our phone already done? - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With Lenovo's acquisition of Motorola Mobility, are we no longer going to receive updates? What's the future look like?

If Lenovo wants to make anything of it, they should be focusing on the updates for the newer phones and keeping the current customer base happy so we don't switch out to another company. Releasing new devices won't do much if people aren't happy with what we already have.

I can't see them not updating these phones they are moto's flagships why would they not update them. They also have no other phones out that will compete with us at this time.

That's what I thought. I was harassed by a third-party retailer about Motorola not pushing anymore updates before they gave me the phone I kept asking for and they were almost forcing me to get a Samsung phone which I would absolutely HATE. It's like they know what's best for me, Samsungs are overrated and have poor quality anyways... I called BS and had to walk away but it got me wondering, "What if...?" Anyways, I guess they really don't have a reason to drop us so early.

Yea if they want to make any sort of name for themselves they'll keep the updates coming and keep the existing customer base happy. Im pretty sure the deal hasn't fully gone through yet, so technically Google still owns Motorola for a little bit longer. Someone chime in if I'm wrong.

Just my 2 cents but I kinda feel like our phones are losing love from not only the suppliers but the public. The devs losing interest cuz well most us on this forum are here cuz we like the exploits and rooting, being harder to accomplish that we see that community is just kinda saying screw it I got better things to do. I love the droid ultra and maxx, and I feel the Samsung line is a chick phone (just a personal feeling don't hate me for that remark) but saying that I also see the galaxy and note are booming with the exploits and possibilities. What if (my conspiracy theorists mode talking here) they wanna junk down the line of moto phones and lock em up tight so that we as consumers with that urge to break and root are only left to spend the extra cash to get Dev models lol

@jayo Haha, I see Sammie's phones the same way! Anyways, Samsung doesn't try to lock down their phones like Moto has been since the Droid X days. And I think Motorola wants to aim at average consumers so interested devs should have to pay more which is kinda ridiculous since it's easier to produce a vulnerable bootloader. I wish Developer's Edition was available on contract, though. That tag is a huge hit... I'd rather pay it off over time.
Anyways...I thought the hardware was entitled to us? If we brick or screw up our phones, wouldn't that be good since we're spending more?

Stop killing android, carriers.

Cnet just put up a review of the Motorola Atrix, one of the most anticipated smart-phones. AT&T has blocked the ability to download 3rd party apps . "You can't install third-party apps" and goes on to say "No change of heart on third-party applications, as that feature is disabled on the Atrix."
Google's(andy rubin) response is to say let me market decide. I truly agree with this statement but when the carriers are in power (two year contracts) it doesn't let the market work. General consumers dont know know the difference between android phones. Consumer assume since they are getting an android phone, all android phones are the same. This blocking of 3rd party apps creates a bad user experience and users will blame android and not the carriers.

I see the rogers in your avatar.... oops, I'm current on the US carriers but as far as the other carriers around the world I'm not 100% up to speed. So screw all those carriers too!
Yea it sucks when they do it but, well you know they must get a cut from doing it.
If they didn't there wouldn't be so much fragmentation on the market.

With that in mind, always buy unlocked phones!
unbelievable how can they come with such a thing
"- boss I have an idea to boost sales: let restrict users from installing third party apps..."
"- this is a stoning idea! let's do it... "
This is pretty horrible when you buy a phone and expect it to function like every other phone that has the same OS.
With maybe Telecom's actually trying to invent their own App stores, this may be ATT's push into that direction.

RIP Motorola indeed. I bought the original Droid day it came out...Now I have the X and it's not the same experience (Of course until I changed Roms and multiple other things). But I was perfectly contented with the original, but in order to get that I HAD to change it. Verizon force fed me apps that I simply did not want. So it's also not just ATT.

Amen my friend! Before this forum I was lost and confused. XDA provided me light and guidance in the land of the lost known as MotoBlur. I found a map to the world of FlyX and apeX and others.
Thank you XDA. Thank you so much.
RIP Motorola
We can get past this.
What's with all the " RIP Motorola " Hackers, modders, overclockers etc probably account for less then 4% of the market. They are going to make money regardless with the Atrix being the first Dual Core phone released...it will do plenty well, no need to worry guys, lol.
As for the 3rd party apps being locked, honestly, how many people here who will (most likely won’t) admit that you bricked your phone doing something silly and then used the “ manufacture’s warranty “ to replace it? Good for them for locking it down if noob’s jump in head first without knowing what they are doing. It might even bring the cost of phone’s down and bring down that ETF! I don’t care to pay for anyone else’s mistakes. Download the app to your computer and transfer it to your phone if you want it that bad.
Motorola is not going anywhere and they have top quality devices. In my opinion, best on the market! Don’t be mad because you can’t afford one
Carriers are taking over Market billing and earn their cut, hence why they're blocking non-market apps. That said, it won't be long before Atrix is rooted and sideloading enabled.
Have little patience and faith in xda community, will ya?
I simply can't believe how US carriers get away with 2 year contracts. It's simply retarded how they take advantage of their customers.

My opinion of the Verizon 10.1 galaxy tab Verizon 4g lte version only.

You wonder why I post this, I get it. Personal experience warrants that I tell you about this Verizon tab.
Locked bootloader
No netflix
No skype for front camera
And this is my basis to start this frustration rant. Either Samsung or the android os in general is not popular enough to push these technologies to be developed for the latest and greatest droid device and honeycomb.
Please understand I love droid and am anti ipad/apple. But the fact is I bought an ipad2 last night and I am doing all the things I can't on the Samsung.
Don't tell me to sideload anything. It simply does not work on the Verizon model. I want to root but no support has been lended to me and many others on this and many other droid sites. Including the Samsung forum site.
If there appears to be a way to root, then no one has a reversing flash for it.
In general, new technology or not, the apps should be there. When paying the equivalent price of an ipad the android tab should blow the freaking doors off apple. I've got em both right here and the ipad2 just kicked the bajesus out of this 10.1
Proprietary skiz and all for nothing more than me being able to log in get apps and have them work without bootlegging, voiding warranties and sideload this and that.
now before you go calling me a troll or a hater...
I have a

And now because droid is not "mainstream" enough a damn apple ipad2 in my house. What the hello, droid os is now officially pissing me off. I know that it is not the os fault but, really I disagree. If droid was selling tabs at half the rate of apples ipad then this freaking rant would never have been written and my azz would never considered looking at a freaking lemming apple ipad anything.
Maybe somebody here knows somebody that will forward this along because this kind lf crap right here. Droid developers not taking availability of apps seriously is what killed IBM in the 80's by thinking home pcs in every house was a farce.
droid development needs to lobby payoff incentavize whatever the hello they need to do to get service providers to write for droid if they want to command a price equal or greater than apple.
please do whatever you do agree or disagree but do not attack me personally or belittle my intelligence. I am neither a kid or dummy. I like technology but I do not like beating my head against the wall trying hours in vain to get something to work just to find out it won't.

to the OP.....you do understand the difference between "Droid" and Android, right? "Droid" is just Verizon's marketing campaign for SPECIFIC android devices (Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Incredible, Samsung Droid Charge). MOD EDIT: REMOVED OFFENSIVE WORDS. you purchased a carrier specific tablet, not a WiFi model. therefore, development for said device will only move forward considering more people decide to buy it. theres plenty of development for the WiFi version of the GT10.1.
as for locked bootloaders.......actually, Samsung doesn't ever lock bootloaders, from what i understand. HTC has been known to, and Motorola is notorious at it. Samsung and i believe LG have the easiest exploits when it comes to rooting.
BTW, the Honeycomb source code hasn't been released for any device, probably not until ICS drops.

Really? Are you serious? Droid, Android,,,,, again Really? Yes I do understand that a droid is a phone and android is an operating system. Did you not see the reference to honeycomb etc..? Forgive me I don't mean to be disrespectful......this is just not the kind of response I'm looking for.
I'm sorry if my abbreviations confused you.
For locked bootloader again not an idiot the bootloader is locked. is that really a surprise dealing with big red. Samsung is doing what they are told I guess. Not only is the bootloader locked don't flash this puppy with odin or you will be unable to wipe or return to virgin setup.
PERIOD! at least with the current means and methods on the net.
Samsung wifi models some were shipped with unlocked bootloaders but not Verizon models. Again! I am only referencing the 4g model so any other make model manufacturer is completely irrelevant.
I have had 3 of these in my hands they are all on lockdown. They also are telling people 4g must be activated to get owner registration......the first one I returned doa to the selling dealer but big red corporate would not exchange it because I didn't HVE 4g turned on so in their system I didn't even show owning the product.
I could go on and on.
point is everything in the original post in 100% true and accurate and knowledge from my personal hands on experience.
I am hoping that someone takes it personally and gets some interest in mastering this device. I pretty much root all my devices but after bringing my first one Bck to lofe 4 times and never getting superuser I am in a holding position until full accurate knowledgable instructions on how to unlock bootloader, backup, root, unroot. I am waiting.
Truth again, the post was not about rooting but the fact that the android development team had better start using some power in their speech to people like skype, netflix, and any other major player on behalf of us the people that buy android devices or we are and are gonna continue to be pissed if they don't get it and that means we will buy other peoples stuff ya know,,,the whole supply demand free market concept?...
Especially when I go pay the same price for an ipad2 and all the skizz I want is a click away for free and with no effort or time wasted in a forum on why my stuff doesnt offer main stream popular sh#%!

I've seen the post and it works but it doesn't return the device back to stock. also again you fail to see where rooting was not the point of the above post. It was one point out of many.
So I was in a hurry and didn't put an in front of droid each time. I did however say

But if you have a custom recovery, couldn't you just make a cwm backup when you first get it? Then that would return it to stock when you restore that backup.
They don't drop source code for honeycomb. That's just how they do it.
you further perpetuate the misconception that "Droids" are anything with Android on it. It's bad enough when people who know nothing of rooting and such call it "Droid". But you're on xda.
And I've contributed to the community a lot more then you have man. You've only offered this rant.
And every post, on here, I've still offered some sort of answer or advice.
Don't be one if those people that come on here to demand people to develop for the device you bought. Be happy with what is offered and have patience. All you accomplished on your OP is sounding like a jackass with buyers remorse.
And GTFO with your iPad.
For some reason no you cannot flash cwm. Theres a ton of people posting on this and why it sends the tab into a bootloop. There are also multiple post on this forum and others where people are asking for the stock image due to this.
There is also a post where rooting instructions are clear and precise. One problem. The links are broken and no longer valid.
I do not further perpetuate anything. You may perceive it that way because you have the inability to look at a forest instead of a frikken tree.
I have stated enough times that I do understand that Android is an O.s. and that "droid" is a phone device produced by motorola, although I never mentioned moto.
Geez.. Also I stated in my OP that I bought the ipad2 for comparison. I do not want the ipad2 as I have invested way too much in market apps and gmail to start the wallet all over with apple apps. However, now that I have an ipad2, I dont hate it. It's a good machine. If that makes me bad then ok, whatever.
My first post was done largely abbreviated and maybe i didnt convey my points or angle well enough. I'll concede that but, I was typing on my samsung tablet and was just trying to get some action on the topic. The last thing I wanted was for someone to make it their mission to point out what was wrong line by line but, hey whatever.
Simply put just in case my original post was written ineffectively on my tablet. I am on my desktop now and the keyboard is much more effective than trying to type a letter on the tablet, let me reexplain my op.
Simply put,
I prefer the Android O.s.
I like the samsung tablet.
The memory, processor, flash, a million things I see potential in.
However, when I analyze something I also analyze as if or from a consumer standpoint and maybe not so much a dev. standpoint.
By this alone I think that the people/powers that be need to wake up and push the big boys like skype, netflix, etc... to make apps that will be compatible with the latest and greatest release of not only the O.s. but the hardware devices that come from HTC, Moto, Samsung, lg, etc....
In order to get mass appeal from consumers ****e is gonna have to work or people will opt for what does work.
Right now the samsung 10.1 wifi's only work netflix on some platforms not all.
Right now the samsung 10.1 wifis and lte models will not do skype with the front cam.. so no video on either side.
ALSO TRUE FOR XOOM
These are just 2 apps but, they are "THE" two apps that alot of people converting to tabs are wanting.
Contrary to popular belief most people buy tabs to eff off with. They are not hot like a laptop, they surf relatively well, but everyday consumers want to skype, netflix, check email, all of it.
They do not want to be in front of a desktop with their tablet hooked up via usb hacking and sacking the images, custom roms, etc... That is a few of which I am one of but, even I grow tired and frustrated when I brick ****e and screw it up but, really, just to get netflix loaded. No way man, I want to click and install enter my username and watch my son watch his movies.
Yeah its fun getting them working again but, with this thing.......It's all for nothing. I still dont have the full potential of this device because it simply will not do it.
Apple ipad2 does both of these out of the box with no trickery. Just search and download.
That may not be a problem for you as a senior member and expert at going thru the work of sideloading apps etc...... but, for mom at the grocery store. She's gonna pick what works with the click of a button.
Android devices and The Android O.s. developers are going to have to be compelled to make the ****e work on their devices if they want to take the sales to the next level. This is not my opinion at all. This is just fact. You can have a great hardware device and a sporty o.s. but, if there is no software available for it, or apps in this case then you have nothing and you certainly dont have buyers for it.
Ipad sales compared to android type tab devices are not even in the same universe. Ipad sales are smashing Android based tabs. Not because they have been out longer either.
Why is that? Well people are sheep for one! I get it but, how does Android smash Apple? Well they do it by #1 advertising, #2 being better (measurably), (which I believe they already are) , but they also have to, have to, have to, offer at least what the ipad will do and more.
Come on man, I'm not asking for the world here.
To be better when you are the underdog you have to be twice as good. NOt from a hardware standpoint but, from all of it. Cosmetics, function, hardware, cost, more apps, better graphics. etc...
Android has done most of this but, not all of it. The apps lacking in the market have got to catch up immediately or people will continue doing what they have been doing. Buying ipads
Again, this is what the post was about. You just think that Android and hardware is good now. Get them (the Android stiffs) the revenue stream that Apple has and then we will "really" see some cool stuff.
this may be the one negative about open source. If the people making the apps and the people making the devices, and the people making the upgrades to the O.s. are not all working together then Android will not be "THE" player, they will just be "A" player in the sea of other players.
I am also not demanding anyone develop for my specific tablet. I really dont care if they do or not. But, if that is the attitude of a tablet that is supposed to be "THE" tablet for the Android flagship right now, that's a bad attitude or stance for them to take when basic apps are not even offered or if they do they will not work. Not exactly how your gonna get susie away from the apple store. Again, this is simply about marketing, and retail appeal.
Develop, dont develop, the market wins only players lose.
On a personal note.
By the way, I have not one time condemned or attacked you. You have insisted on calling me names and being sarcastic to me each time you post. Please let me say that it was not my intent to offend you. This post was not about you or the fact that you help people or dont help people on this site.
I would like you to stop calling me ignorant and telling me to GTFO and such about an ipad, after I said that I was pro android.
I will say one thing about the comparison of the 2.
Apple kicks the samsung on two major things:
Keyboard does not lag on apple. I am always backspacing corrections on the samsung.
Apple has apps, our android market does not.
Now I'll compare the Xoom and The Samsung 10.1
I like the xoom better. At least netflix works on it.
However, skype does not so Apple still wins in flexibility of apps.
I like the hardware and acceleration of the samsung 10.1 over all of them.
I am not sure what gives on the keyboard lag? Sucks.
This is exactly why I placed in my original post that I was not hating on Android and I did not want personal attacks.
I am asking you to please stop. I am not interested in name calling.
Continue if you must but, I will not engage in calling you names.
At all
Please keep discussion on topic and do not use offensive words

In reply to all three: BULL****! I have had a Verizon Galaxy Tab 10.1 for many months and:
1. The bootloader is not and was not ever locked
2. Netflix patch was trivial to install (and it runs great)
3. Skype does support the front camera (as of its most recent release a couple months ago)
Other than that, rooting the device was just as simple as installing Netflix.

[DISCUSSION] Google to give 20 percent of Motorola's employees pink slips

I found this rather interesting. A few months ago Google finally closed the deal on its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, replacing the old CEO with its own handpicked successor. Now the company is expediting its plans to consolidate Motorola. In the latest report, the search giant is getting ready to do some major restructuring, which will result in a 20 percent cut (about 4,000 people) of the handset maker’s workforce. This isn’t so much of a surprise as many executives had already hit the exit once the deal was done.
The way this job reduction will playout is Motorola’s operations in Asia and India, as well as its R&D spending in Chicago, Sunnyvale, and Beijing — is getting a drastic cut. Google’s goal is to trim down the fat on such a bloated company; a company that could only turn a profit six months out of the last four years. What makes sense is for Google to stop putting wasted resources into producing lower-end handsets, which is a plan the company intends to carry out. New Motorola boss, Dennis Woodside, told the The New York Times that he’s refocusing the company to concentrate on “a few cellphones instead of dozens.” Again, this isn’t new, we already had an idea that Motorola would refocus and begin to release lesser phones, which is something the old CEO Sanjay Jha uttered earlier this year.
In becoming a much leaner company, Motorola will begin to put more emphasis on things like voice recognition that can determine who is in a room, better cameras, and longer-lasting batteries. All great qualities phone owners love. The NYT report also mentioned how an executive close to situation believed it would be “more difficult” for Google and Motorola to spontaneously collaborate on Android projects.
This irks me, because it makes no sense. Why is it a problem for Google to do its own thing, with its own OS, on its own hardware company? My point is, every single OEM the search giant “partners-up with” has been doing whatever it wants with Android since day one (like throwing crappy skins on top of it). So why would things all of a sudden become “more difficult” with Google’s acquisition of Motorola? OEMs will continue to do whatever they want regardless. What does everyone think of all this?

This is a problem, because Google designs not only the os, but now the hardware too. This can be considered an unfair monopoly. Google has to tread very lightly in how they handle this whole thing.
If done wrong, they could alienate all the other manufactures out there, and we could start seeing them all go back to things like symbian (yuck!).
Google has to keep Android open for at least another 5 years unless they find a loop hole. By that time their will be another OS come along that will catch everyones attention.

I was reading this morning how it was harder for Motorola to talk to and work witj the Android team at google now. The perceived unfair advantage is being handled very cautiously by Google. Then minutes later another article said the same thing except it was Motorola limiting access. Everyone is too uptight. Make it freakin' work.

Makes me sad. I have three friends whose parents work for Motorola. I keep bugging them to tell their parents to get ICS on more phones but I think I know more about their parents' jobs than they do themselves
It sucks that they have to cut so many jobs - but a lot of them are in markets where Motorola just flat out doesn't sell anything, so they are completely leaving those markets. Hopefully those people can find jobs quickly (and get nice severance packages), and also hopefully Motorola becomes profitable again very quickly, and their remaining areas get bigger and higher more people.
I'm sure it's much easier to suck with less employees. Now they'll actually have an excuse for it.
Motorola lied and I'm still locked mb865
I totally want Google to dictate to Motorola. A small handful of higher-quality handsets? A slimmer operation?
Come on, Motorola should have done this two or three years ago.
But turning Motorola into, essentially, a Nexus-only producer with some of its traditional branding could quickly make them into the most interesting manufacturer.

LOL, go a googling... Google is going to turn moto into a lower cost handset maker, not a top end manufacturer... in other words they don't wanna compete with Samsung and the like.
They (motorola), will not make a nexus only device, as of yet NO nexus has EVER been a motorola device, now the xoom was a "google experience" device, meaning no blur at all.... other than that, you won't see them do a nexus phone, but maybe once or twice if ever... it is rumored that this year moto will make the nexus, but I have heard some rumblings lately that don't sound like that will happen.

Google is trying to paint the picture that they have nothing to do with Motorola and that its own separate division because they don't want the other OEM's getting mad at them. They are also saying that Motorola will have to bid for the Nexus program like everybody else... no favoritism! We'll see true thats going to be! Personally I want to see Google get more involved in Motorola, but I don't want them to stop building high end devices... this is the reason I buy Motorola because the hardware is reliable!
This is all similar to the backlash Microsoft has been getting for deciding to building the "Surface" and go into the hardware market. OEM's are mad at them now for this!

This is exactly what i was going to say!
We are also forgetting the 'other' reason why el goog bought Moto, patents! I really believe the patents thing is true.. as far as Moto not manufacturing top end devices, i dont believe that, but i do believe they will be limited. They wont release a new mobile every now and then instead may be one top dog for each carrier in the year and two for the international market.
In big mobile markets like India. Moto is struggling, their service here is so infamous and the availability of moto products is also an issue here, where there is NO carrier branding moto has to depend on distribution chains and retailers, and they arent doing well in that dept.
Bottom line is Moto will be different from now onwards, these pink slips are just beginning. There are going to be changes, but not drastic IMHO.

You're right - none yet. I'm just -wishing- that Google would take a more prominent role, at least in the direction of making Motorola play in a more Google way (not that Google is always that open themselves).
I can understand Google not wanting to show favoritism, and if for no other reason I'd be fine with official Nexus devices going to Samsung, HTC, et al., but it would be nice if ALL Motorola devices had that "Google experience."
Its confirmed that Motorola India R&D Centre of Bangalore is yet to make an official statement by coming days and it's also been said that It'll lay off a few employees.

If the purchase was only (even mostly) for the patents Moto has, which will probably help defending some features of Android (against Apple), then this move is of no surprise. I hope the affected people are compensated well and also hope many of them start new startups in mobile space with that cushion.

S5 Non-Developer-Edition - aka this POS

Glad I didn't yet sell my S4, because I believe the Verizon S5 is soon to be the most returned phone in Android history.
While Verizon/Samung/Android didn't "actively" mislead anyone about the capabilities of this phone, they clearly allowed people to believe things to the contrary, and it royally pisses me off.
1> There is no sense in having a finger print scanner that doesn't work most of the time, and doesn't allow for purchases with PayPal as originally intended/advertised.**Now working**
2> Crippling the download booster function and not even offering an explanation is simply unacceptable.
3> Having an extSdCard that 4.4 doesn't allow 3rd party apps to access is not "secure", it's stupid.
4> Rooting and allowing awesome developers to do what they do is what Android is ALL ABOUT, and this phone is the epitome of preventing that.
5> I'm sure there are other things yet to make it to light, that will also have no explanation for the defiance of logic.
Verizon, Android, and Samsung have succeeded in making the iPhone of the Android world. Frankly, I'd rather have an iPhone, and iCant stand em. Best of luck to those that decide to stick it out and pray for root, as I believe that is the only thing that could possibly salvage this joke of a device. Anyone involved in it's creation, should feel ashamed.

That's a negative sense. Can you imagine it positively ?
If you see it as positively then developer edition give ours good opportunity.. i believe it..

You're being a bit dramatic...this phone will get some returns being so locked down, but the number of us that care about root is small, less than 3% I would bet. This will be the best selling Android phone of the year for any carrier most likely.
1) Fingerprint scanner can be greatly improved if you scan the sides of your fingers as well.
2) Agreed and explanation would be nice, but on the other hand they could be trying to avoid a lot of people using this and unknowingly eating up all their data allotment. Consumers have come to understand that being on your wifi doesn't use your data, so if they enabled this feature, they would be using their data while on wifi as well, many without understanding. Then lots of people get overages and get upset with the carriers, causing a headache and more bad PR.
3) Agree again, but Google is asking OEM's to do this with KitKat, it's not unique to Samsung.
4) Rooting/ROMing is not even close to being what Android is "ALL ABOUT", but it's a nice perk with most phones.
5) Okay
This phone will likely get root at some point, but who knows for sure. Luckily, there's other great options to pick from as well.

Your forgot the fact the 98% of S5 users don't care about those facts, you are a minority. I am glad you didn't buy an S5 so we don't have to hear you whine about what we already know. Those that bought in know what we are getting into, coming from a former S4 user w/ Root. If we don't get root, that will suck, but I will be just fine, the less I tinker with my phone, the more I enjoy other things in life.
I have a great idea for you, go to TMobile, they will pay your ETF and get your dream phone.
wow... calm it down son...
waiting for root exploit is part of the fun for me... yes, it sucks i can't have root out of the box to restore my apps but samsung made plenty of upgrades that will keep me busy till a root is out... if it ever does.
I got your back JP. The Verizon Samsung Galaxy s5 turned out to be all the things I thought it would be. I.E. more of the same from Samsung and Verizon both. I am so glad I jumped ship to HTC and got the M8. I am comfortably S-off'ed, doing whatever the hell I want with my 600$ phone.

Eh, people just need to reinforce their decision to go for prettyness over functionality. But we all cannot be teenage girls. And yes, sometimes the most popular device is actually the best.
I think this whole "rebel against popularity" stems from the battle between iOS and Android. Unfortunately Samsung is being seen as the new Apple in the android environment when clearly the provider, in this case VZW, is the oppressor.

1. Yes it does allow payments via Paypal, stop being a tool and READ, maybe even Google something....
2. The gentlemen above me gave a great explanation. It just wouldn't make sense in a capped data environment.
3. If Root were obtained, this wouldn't be an issue. 3rd party apps CAN access the card BTW, they just can't write to folders other than their own. You do know the My Files app works, right????
4. No. Providing smartphone users with an OS that has tightly integrated Google services as a means for Google to serve you relevant ads is what ANDROID is all about. You and I and the rest of us who care about customizing are miniscule compared to the BILLION PLUS Android users. Get a clue dude.

No, I doubt most of us have. Apart from it being an old argument that accomplishes NOTHING, it also is pretty naive to buy a phone THINKING that people who VOLUNTEER and work on donations would spend time to find an exploit, as if this is owed or expected. The sense of entitlement for people who believe this is ridiculous.
S5 does have root, does have custom boot loader, and already has roms. It is VERIZON that has your phone locked.
I'm sorry to say it, but I jumped over to T MOBILE and they paid my ETF fee....up to $350...

1. Follow your own advice, I'll wait.......
2. I wish I was so naive that no explanation, would be considered an explanation.
3. You do know that "My Files" is not a third party app, right????? I understand that most of these issues would be a non-issue with root access, but please oh wise one, explain how this apparent increased root difficulty is peculiarly carrier-specific?
4. No one in the history of the world has ever said "I'm going to get an Android so I can have relevant ads." At least one person has said, "I want to customize the **** out of my phone, therefore, Android."
5. Thank you, I had no idea that there was information about this phone anywhere other than XDA. Perhaps in my quest, I may find this elusive information about the Verizon S5 fingerprint scanner usable with Paypal you speak of.
6. I do NOT feel "entitled" to root. I understand that what you call "volunteering" isn't also about NOT getting paid, which is why I have no problem supporting the awesome efforts of root/recovery/rom/app developers. I DO feel entitled to features advertised to be available in a product, and if/when those features are deliberately disabled, I DO feel entitled to an explanation. Unless you can provide explanations instead of a cult-like defense reserved for Apple Forums, please limit your responses to the tools that may kiss you ass elsewhere.
This is no different than if a car company was to release a model of vehicle with a set of unique features, only to have the dealership remove them, and not bother to tell anyone about it. Then when you realize that those features are missing, and take to a forum (typically) full of enlightened people with explanations and solutions, you instead receive rhetoric like "Stop *****ing about the car not having heated seats(albeit not a unique feature), it has a steering wheel, doesn't it you ungrateful prick?"

Thanks for your input, I am seriously weighing my options, I've been checking out the T-Mobile S5 forums, and see a lot of interesting things going on over there. I haven't been under contract with Verizon for years, and frankly, coverage is the only thing that's preventing me from leaving, and they unfortunately have no competition in that regard. Still considering throwing my grandfathered unlimited data plans on ebay, and exchanging coverage for capability.

Same boat. I have piece of mind, that wherever I go I have service with Verizon. Although tmobile has great service where I live in Atlanta, I've also traveled north and south and felt so cheap and angry having a phone with a G and edge icon for data majority of the time. I mean it's 2014 for crying out loud. LOL! Also the fact my family lives in West Virginia where there's no tmobile service and it roams on att at the worst capped speeds. At that point I promise to not let Verizon go because it has a stellar LTE icon at least 90% of the way. Once I get back to Atlanta, I say, well I have great coverage where I live, costs is cheaper, and mainly bootloaders are unlocked with tmobile. Once I travel on the road again it's the same cycle of me back pedaling leaving Verizon because they're hands down the most reliable, I have a 20% discount, and unlimited data. I'm tempted to suspend my service with Verizon and only reconnect when I travel until tmobile gets there coverage wise. Since I've been off contract forever I can suspend my line for at least half the year without being billed. I feel ridiculous going through this as an adult because I like to flash ROMS. Help me? LOL!

This is hands-down the funniest post I've ever read on XDA. I agree, after my Note 3, I'm all done with Samsung devices permanently. They don't care about their customers at all. They've been most unhelpful after I've exhausted every channel of support imaginable looking for a solution. I wish Motorola would make a high-end device again, which I bet they are. Regardless, don't get too excited about the S5 getting unlocked. I've been working with another S4 developer for about 6 months now, and while we've got a great understanding of what's going on, there's not much we can do. We're still working, but don't get this device expecting custom ROMs and kernels. Root is realistic though, and I'd imagine it'll be here soon
Remember that you have 14 days after renewal of contract or purchase of the device to bring it back and tell those red trolls that you can't root this bad boy.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...hone-maker-essential-is-said-to-consider-sale
shocker
We'll...
Like the stages of grief, I was initially frustrated and upset. After thinking about it for about 3 minutes, just about every possession I own is for sale, for the right price. Go get it Andy!
Kinda sad, was tempted to buy a ph-2. But now I'm happy I'll get a chance to buy a ph-1 when they go on fire sale. It will fit right in with my nextbit Robin.
this was a response from Essential that Android Police received
An official Essential spokesperson responded to our request for comment. Here's what we got:
"We always have multiple products in development at the same time and we embrace canceling some in favor of the ones we think will be bigger hits. We are putting all of our efforts towards our future, game-changing products, which include mobile and home products."

Damm! I've been so looking forward to the new phone! I'm sure it would have been a much bigger success.
(another article about it, based on Bloomberg report https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/24/...ncels-phone-development-considers-sale-report )
So do I buy another backup one as there really doesn't seem to be an alternative.

Do you think we'll still get continued support for the PH-1, as getting the security updates quick, and getting updated to the official release of android p?

I was just wondering that myself.. let's hope the support continues for years to come. I have no plans to upgrade. Love my PH-1
I would not count on continued support for very long. You can’t hardly get decent long term support from phone companies that stay in business...
Sad day really. Especially the cancellation of the phone. I really believed the second one was going to get it right. I only had two problems with the phone: Low light performance of the cameras and poor signal strength (mostly indoors)
I don't think it would have been hard to improve in those areas for their next phone. He is giving up to easy.
P.S. won't be buying their other products if this is how it's going to go.
Maybe we need a petition started to give him more confidence.
It is sad, the Essential Phone had such promise. But sometimes in business "Promises" won't pay the staff or the bills. I was looking forward to PH-2, but now I am, I can't believe I am saying this, looking at the iPhone X.
I have use Android phones ,Nexis< from the beginning. Nexus left us in favor of the extremely expensive and hamstrung Pixel, I was really hoping Essential would fill that void, the one thing is the universe is constant "Apple" seems to always keep thing consistent.
Damn I need to call my therapist, its just a fuc____g phone...
Oh no. That's bad news. What a beautiful phone and not being continued.
First my wonderful Lumia, now the Essential.... Sometimes you wonder what it takes to break into this market.

I have the Essential and iPhone X. When it comes to size I constantly confuse the two of them. The Essential phone was the first Android device that felt like Apple quality to me. Can’t go wrong with either one.

You jinxed it!
Don't buy a OnePlus 6 please...
Jk
Bummed on this one for sure. I've been impressed enough with this phone and especially the support to have considered replacing my wife's aging Nexus 5X with the second generation one (assuming the camera was better than the ph-1).
this feels exactly like what happened to me when Google sold Motorola soon after I bought my 2013 Moto X, which is still my all time fav phone. Google was supporting it (we got KitKat FAST) and then BAM the support was yanked out when the company got sold. I was starting to like this phone almost as much.

Rumors.
From Andy:

Where does that say the company is closing or that PH-2 is dead?

Cmon dude he posted it as a response to the articles
"we embrace canceling some in favor of the ones we think will be bigger hits."
I think that is pretty clear, unless you're being intentionally obtuse.
