I have a very strange issue with my Nexus 5 (Android 4.4.2).
I have USB debugging enabled since day one because I'm using it as a development device. Until today it worked all fine. Today, I enabled USB Tethering using the menu Settings > More > Tethering > USB Tethering because I needed Internet connection. After a while I disabled it. From that point on, my ADT Bundle didn't see my device anymore! Strangely enough, as soon as I enable USB Tethering, my PC sees my Nexus again! Can anybody explain this? It looks like a nasty bug...

Hi all
I've had my N5 a couple of weeks now, and it's working nicely, except for getting bluetooth and USB tethering to work smoothly. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions?
I can connect the phone to my laptop via USB (I'm running W8 x64, for my sins), and use MTP and PTP without a problem. Selecting USB tethering results in the phone saying "tethered", but nothing appearing in the list of network adapters.
I can pair the phone with the laptop, but the only services that seem to be offered are file-transfer and audio stuff.
If I enable USB debugging, the network shows on the laptop, and seems to work OK for a while. Sometimes the phone wants to reboot while doing this (typically after a couple of minutes).
Interestingly, Device Manager shows the phone as a Nexus 5 under the 'Other Devices' category only when USB debugging is enabled, otherwise it displays as 'ADB Device' only if 'PTP' is selected, and the phone is absent when 'MTP' is selected.
I'm guessing that this is a driver issue of some sort (I hate Windows), and have had a go at installing the LG United driver, to no avail. Any pointers gratefully received.
Cheers
Charlie
I'm having issues tethering with Windows 8, both wifi hotspot and USB tethering. I can connect and it will show up as internet connected then just die. Connection even goes on my phone.
However when USB tethering with OS X all I had to do was download a package from here http://joshuawise.com/horndis, after that it pops up straight away and I don't have any problems. Can tether for ages no problems.
Will probably try a custom rom soon see if it is to do with the Nexus 5 stock rom.
Hi Charlie,
I'm having the very same problem. With my Galaxy S3, I would tether (via BT, as it was a fast connection that didn't drain my battery like WiFi hotspot!) all day long with a Win8 ultrabook. Worked brilliantly!
Just picked up a Nexus 5 last night. My Nexus 7 tablet can use the phone's internet no problem, but my Win8 machine gives no such options. All I have is a "direct connection" service visible to the laptop, I suppose for file sharing.
Has anyone made any progress on this issue at all? It seems that the problem lies with Windows8. It boggles my mind why the Nexus 5's BT tethering implementation is so different than the GS3's...
Progress report: it seems I have tethering over BT working!
I've tried a bunch of different things... the challenge now, is to figure out what it was that worked...
I would try this first: remove the Bluetooth pairing between your PC and your Nexus 5. Ensure that "Bluetooth Tethering" is indeed checked in "Tethering and Portable Hotspot" menu (under Android settings) BEFORE pairing. That might be what I did wrong, in fact.
I restarted my PC, and voila, when right-clicking on the phone pairing on my PC, under the "Connect" menu, suddenly there's an "Access Point" service visible.
I'm pretty confident the above might fix you up.
[PS: If not, the only other thing I did differently when I first tried, was I paired the phone through Win8's buried bluetooth devices menu (avoiding the alternative MetroUI interface at all costs, as I normally do). I don't see any reason why using either UI should provide different results, but hey.]
Hi! My name is Recoder. I recently brought a new Google Nexus 5 (16GB Black) and have a Tata Docomo 3G Connection (India).
I would actually like to Reverse Tether my Phone (so as to get my PC Highspeed internet on my phone, since the mobile network is a bit choppy at times, and the connection times out very frequently). But in order to reverse tether (without Root), I need to get my Phone recognized as a Tethered Mobile on my PC.
I am actually a beginner in Tethering.
1. I connected the Phone to PC via USB, and clicked on USB Tethering. (it says tethered), but my PC keeps on installed Remote NDIS Driver forever and finally says Driver not installed nor does it recognizes my Phone. (It Gets Recognized as a PTP, MTP Device)
2. I have USB Debugging Enabled (don't know whats that for). Disabling it does not make any difference.
3. I tried the Google USB Driver but it does not have the driver for Nexus 5, and with usb debug enabled, it comes as a Samsung Android ADB Composite Device.
So Please help my how to Tether my Phone (Step by step if possible, since its my first time)
I don't want to root my new Nexus.
With Warm Regards,
Super Recoder
Not sure if this is the right section to put this but I apologise now if its not.
I have a Google Nexus 5 and ive been trying to get it to switch on USB tethering when it detects a USB connection for my Parrot Asteroid headunit.
The best app for this seems to be Auto USB Tethering by MetaCtrl. The problem is this app is blocked for the nexus 5, now I think this is because of carrier restrictions on tethering but I don't have a problem tethering I just want it to come on automatically when I plug in the USB cable.
Ive managed to find the apk and installed it along with the premium unlocker but it still doesn't work.
Has anyone got Auto tethering to work on the Nexus 5? and if so some pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I flashed the MM upgrade on my US 5.5 and then did a factory reset, but now my Android Auto will not connect to my phone. I've tried swiping down and choosing MTP, but still does not connect. The phone is connecting to Bluetooth. After researching it seems to be a problem with Marshmallow and Android Auto. Does anyone know a fix?
Uninstall drivers and reinstall
Sent from my 6039S using XDA-Developers mobile app
There aren't any drivers. This is for Android Auto when I plug in to my Kia Sportage. Android Auto did work before the MM update, and it still works on other phones running 5.1.
Cant you just remove the device from android auto and then reconnect it?

I did remove the device, but Android Auto will not find the phone with the MM update. Seems to be a know issue with Samsung and LG devices.
I finally got Android Auto working by using the Developer options, Select USB configuration, RNDIS (USB Ethernet)

I have the same problem and i tried to put RNDIS but my cell doesnt get the configuration. Did you do something to put it on RNDIS?
I got a new car (Hyundai Kona) with android auto but my Idol 3 5.5 (6045I) will not connect to the car screen. I have MM on it (but not the 2 latest garbage updates). I have tried USB debugging, multiple(10) USB cords. I cannot get RNDIS to work on the USB -it reverts to charging. So my USB is set to MTP. My phone plays AA on it's own screen just fine but will not send it to the car screen. Bluetooth works fine.
The auto dealer rep tried his iphone (apple carplay) and another android phone and they connected just fine so it is not the car.
Any suggestions?
my galaxy a71 is rooted i tried many tether apps none worked
also i tried whats seen in screenshoot
i want to share my mobile data over ethercable to my computer
i bought this adapter .. trying to enable it but doesnt seem to work - the computer registeres the cable but no data flows through
maybe you know more...
( PS yes i need the cable- and i know how wifi tether works )=
Why don't you just plug in a USB cable, like the one that came with your phone?
In Developer Options, Default USB Configuration, select USB tethering.
Then go to Connections, Mobile Hotspot & Tethering and Turn on USB Tethering. If its grayed out, you have connect your phone to PC to be able to select it.
Thats it, you can use your data plan or wifi, both works. No special cable needed, you can do this with just about any modern Android device, since Lollipop.
If you can't find these settings, type in "USB Tethering" in the search bar at the top of the main screen in Settings.
If you haven't enabled Dev Options, tap "Build" 7 times or Google "enable Dev Options" for detailed instructions
