I have a 16GB Nexus 5 running stock ROM with Franco Kernel. No crazy overclocking or undervolting going on. I was using my phone throughout the day today without any problems but I left it on my desk and the battery drained to 0%. I tried plugging it in to the charger and then turning it on but it kept booting and then powering off at the home screen even though I had it connected to a working charger (I tried multiple chargers and outlets). After about three more tries after leaving it to charge for about fifteen-twenty minutes or so, still no fix. I let it charge for a half an hour this time but now it wont even boot. I've tried holding down the power + volume buttons but still no luck. This is my first time having this type of problem, any recommendations on what I should do?

I guess it's a soft brick
Have a clean installation of the kernel again with adb commands

Plugged it into my computer but its not recognizing my phone considering its not on? I'm not sure if I'd be able to use adb commands with it not being powered on or am I wrong?

Is it showing that it's connected?
If not, are the drivers properly installed?
If it's just a boot loop then your device has soft brick!

I'm sure I have the correct drivers as I used adb commands on my device a few weeks ago and I've connected it to my computer numerous times to transfer files in the past few weeks. I dont think its a bootloop now (It may have been before) because the nexus isn't even powering on anymore. I've had it connected to the charger for the a while now and every five or ten minutes, I've tried powering it on but no luck, it wont even show a glimpse of a boot screen.

No, I'm not able to boot into recovery. I'm planning on leaving it to charge for an hour or so to see if anything happens. When I was charging it before it stopped turning on, the battery didn't show any change even after charging for 15 minutes.

I left it unplugged overnight after having it charge for an hour and this morning I tried turning it on and it booted, I went through thecbootloader and tried rebooting through it and it booted up but it powered off again when it got to the home screen. Before it turned off, I glanced at the battery percentage and it still showed 0% despite all the times I had it charging.

So I was in the middle of installing Android Revolution HD last night.
I used the super-wipe script to prep the phone, but then the actual rom zip failed to flash. I downloaded the rom over again but fell asleep in the process. I woke up this morning and now I can't get anything to show up on the screen of the Sensation. I pulled battery and tried to get it to boot into fastboot. No luck.
The only signs of life I get now are when I pull battery and put it back in, the orange battery indicator comes on for about half a second, then then goes off. Then I get nothing.
Any ideas? When I left the phone I was still in CWM (I think).
Help!
Pull battery, reinsert, connect charger and start while holding -vol button. Let it fully charge then. Battery is flat and phone doesn't charge when off. Search general section, its in top 10 posts most likely.

Should I see an amber charging light when it's charging like this? I can't get it to show...
I had the same problem this morning. Due to a unique set of circumstances and a recovery image that doesn't allow charging while powered off, my phone was able to run dead while plugged in. My powerskin charged first and then kicked over to the phone which had run completely dead (powerskin is supposed to charge the phone first but didn't do that). So, when it tried to charge the phone, it couldn't because of the recovery image. When I got up this morning, no way no how was I able to get it to boot into any mode that would allow charging (couldn't get it to boot at all for that matter). I ended up using a usb cable with one end cut off and the wires exposed to connect directly to my battery for a couple minutes. I then put the battery in my phone, booted it up and plugged it in to charge. I'm glad I went through this back in the day and still had the usb cable around from back when I had a winmo htc wizard that had a similar issue.

Interesting idea. Can I do this on the OSX version of the Android SDK? I've never tried it.
Came back after lunch today and the phone still won't boot, so I'm going to have to try something like this since it's obviously not charging.
I did it on android sdk on windows. It made it to my mind cause windows seemed to recognise the mobile even though it was turned off. If you manage to do it just tell me

Glad it helped. If it doesn't charge in fastboot, try charging it for another minute or two and attempt a full boot. I actually fully booted and then plugged in my charger.

you are welcome. Now install ROM Manager and get the latest CWM which can charge while mobile is off
Similar problem, no luck
Just charge your phone in whatever state it is for at least 1 hour and your phone will boot up.
I had this problem twice of completely draining my battery to 0% and ended up in boot failure.
I was on cwm recovery.
But it didn't matter I did nothing and let the phone connected to charger for an hour or so and it just boot up.
The battery was showing around 30% power.
So try it.

So my infuse's bottom touch screen buttons, (search, home, back, and menu/settings) stopped working randomly, it was just a matter of me checking my phone for texts while walking around and the buttons were dim, so I restarted the phone 4-5 times to try and fix it, but nothing helped it.
So I put the phone in download mode and tried to get it back to stock using odin. But it froze at cache.rfs for half an hour so I disconnected it. I got the phone ! pc screen from this point on and my phone was still being recognized by my computer at this point as well. I called it a night and left it plugged into my computer until the next day, I tried a different USB port in the morning after I installed samsung mini kies for drivers (even though it was already recognized) and tried using odin again. Again, it froze at cache.rfs so I unplugged my phone and now I can't even turn it on to get to the phone ! pc screen. When I hold down the power button now though, even with my phone charging, nothing happens. I tried power button + volume button too, and nothing happened. It can't even be recognized by any of my computers either. What do I do now? I have warranty on it through AT&T but I'm not sure what their terms are flashing and stuff. (Luckily I did a backup on my phone before flashing )
I had similar problems with Odin freezing at cache.rfs. I tried three USB calls and they all did the same thing. I then tried another USB cable at my work and it flashed the uclb3 unbrick like a champ. My guess for your situation would be a bad USB, try another. Hope that helps

Ok, it's plugged into another USB port but again, it doesn't even turn on to show me the phone ! pc screen. I do notice that when I hold down power, for a split second after a few moments of holding down the button, there is a flash coming from the right side of the screen. Until I can get it recognized on my computer I think I'm at a loss.
Sounds like the battery is out of juice. You'll need to charge it or put a new battery in before you can get back to download mode.

Wouldn't you agree though that I should be able to boot up with it plugged into a charger?

almost 12 hours later of charging my infuse with various chargers and cords, I still can't even get a samsung logo. Not if its bricked...its the kernel that allows the phone to charge when its off...so you'll either have to try a battery only charger (whereyou take out the battery and put it in a square charger thing...one that doesn't charge it through the phone/USB) or just buy or borrow a new battery
And when a phone dies you have to plug it in and let it sit for a little while before you van turn it on again

Ahhhhh, thank you for that good bit of info. I never thought that the power to the battery was governed by the phones kernel. Do you know where I could buy one of these chargers? After posting this I'll do a google search myself, but just in case.
Thanks very much.
Edit:
Ok, so after I get some juice into my battery I should just try all unbricking steps again?

Damn, I ordered a wall charger online for $10 and the shipping time is a week max. I'm crossing my fingers for a quick delivery.
Ok so my mytouch was charging on my computer then i went to check on a text message, the screen was black but i could see the backlight. So I assumed it was a normal glitch or something so i disconnected it and pulled out the battery, but it wont even turn on or charge now.
I did everyting
I took out the battery
I tried a different battery
I took out both the sim and the sd card
I tried to load on bootloader
I tried a wall charger
Nothing has worked!
Anybody got any ideas.

When you say "Wont even turn on or charge"...
Do you get a buzz when trying to turn on?
How long have you left it on charge?
Does your computer recognize it when plugged in?
Have you rebooted your PC since the issue started?
When you pulled the battery, did you also unplug the USB cable?
What happens if you take out the battery and while holding down volume + & - you plug into PC via USB?

Sounds suspiciously like hardware, maybe main flex went bad and... well actually probably not as I think it would still vibrate. If you have debugging turned on and the proper drivers in pc the you can try a screen cast and see if you have anything, that or maybe some adb commands.
Also try another pc, one that it has never been connected to, see if drivers try to install

Ok. So it's not totally dead. (It's not necessarily recoverable, but it's not a full brick.)
A failed flex cable isn't out of the realm of possibility. You mentioned you were checking a text.
Did you open the keyboard, or hit the power button or trackpad?

I have a nexus 5 that was rooted on stock rom. I have not made any changes recently to anything. I went to wake the phone and got nothing. I used vol down and power to get into bootloader. Selected start and then the phone sat on the google logo for 5 mins. I again tried vol down and power and it went off and now will not do anything with any button combo. I charged it overnight in case the battery was just dead. Nothing this morning. I then tried to plug it into the computer and it looked for drivers for QSUSB_BULK. Never seen this before. It also shows up in device manager and an unknown device with that same title. I assume that this is a "hard brick" but surprised it just came out of the blue... Is there any chance of saving the phone?

Ah, that sucks! I'm a little confused though, because you said that the button combos do nothing now, but when you now plug it into the PC, it attempts to load different / incorrect drivers? Is the screen just black and it's trying to load the drivers still or...? Have you tried to manually load the drivers when it's showing the unknown device? Tried different USB cables and / or ports? I realize the phone is not acting correctly, but it's best to eliminate the easy things first.
I don't think its the screen, I saw it shut off then never do anything again. I have tried different cables and ports. The phone never booted back into android I know that much. Trying to load drivers or use nexus tool kit to look for adb or fastboot devices does nothing either.
I also do not get a light or anything on the screen when I plug in the charger.
Yea, I wasn't thinking it was the screen itself. I was just wondering if now the phone is "on" and attempting to load drivers, albeit incorrectly or not at all, and the screen was still dark/off? What computer OS are you using? I'm assuming Windows due to the unknown device error, but which iteration: XP/Vista/7/8/8.1? What is the error when you manually try to load the drivers - not with a tool kit? Have you tried another cord / USB port / PC? Like I mentioned earlier, it's obviously a phone issue, but sometimes just trying these different things can at least get it to load the drivers correctly where you could at least fastboot the system back to the phone.

You are on the qualcomm cpu strict mode.
Keep it like that for ten -15 minutes the battery will charge.
After that keep it plugued in and press the power button until you hear the sound that the device is disconnected.
After that vol down + power right after
Should work

I think I really outdid myself this time, was installing an official firmware on my fiancee's phone(Blur_Version.98.50.26.XT925.Brasil.en.BR) trough RSD Lite (6.1.6) and at the end of the process the phone shut down and didn't finish the rebooting process. Since then I can't get it to turn on or access fastboot. Even connecting it to a charger wont turn the led on.
So, the hard questions to ask:
1. Is there anything I can do? Anything at all?
2. Even if I can't. What may have happened? I used RSD other times and I have modded half a dozen phones and a brick happened to me before.
Thank you so much, I am probably gonna get chewed since her work depends on it and we will have to get an other one, but any nudge in the right direction or cold hard truths will be appreciated.

I would try a Motorola Factory Adapter or mod a USB cable to act like one. If it still fails to boot then your looking at a hard brick.

Quick update, this morning when I connected to a power source it turned the green light on(left ir connecting for the night). Tried connecting to my pc and it will play the connected/disconnected sounds over and over again. Still can't fastboot it.
I imagine it might have been some sort of battery issue but it was over 60% when I began installing the firmware and the process took less than 10 minutes.

Nope, my pc will make sounds as if it was being plugged and unplugged repeatedly.
Also when I press the power and volume buttons to reboot in fastboot or recovery (the cell was unlocked, rooted and had the latest JB philz recovery ) the green light will flash but the screen wont turn on.
Nothing shows up at all? That sucks. Hmmm, leave the phone on the charger overnight and then see if you can get into fastboot.
