Battery Problem - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi to everyone! I think to have a problem to battery. I do 2/2.30 hours of screen on, with 11/12 total. But today I have noticed a strange drain battery . I reboot my device and it has lost 6% of battery. What is the problem? Is it naturally?
I hope in one your explanation. Thank you!

If your device is new, your battery likely isn't calibrated. It takes a couple full charge/discharge cycles before it settles down.

I had that too, several reboots fix it. I was also running better battery stats and there wasn't anything showing wakelocks or other strange stuff.
Good luck fixing it (try to reboot, look at odd apps, settings, who knows)!

I used Battery Widget Reborn, but recently it said strange battery life, one time the drain battery was 5/6 hours, after 10 minutes the duration was 4/5.. I don't know why, I have it since christmas. Do you try to ricalibrate the battery?
Sorry for my English.. :silly:

The re calibration is a myth. What usually works is factory reset and starting fresh - that is if there isn't some app or odd thing happening.

Check out the better battery stats thread. The app and the members in the thread will be able to tell you if you have an app that is causing the drain

[FIX] For Battery Reporting and Draining Issues

This will likely fix any battery reporting problems that occur and should be done after installing a rom, or whenever you think it is needed. It will not actually make your battery life better. It may seem like it as before resetting it may have said 1% remaining when it was really only half dead
NOTE: you must be rooted, which if you are on this forum you almost definitely are
1. fully charge battery and leave plugged in. click calibrate in this app or manually delete the file yourself: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...yLDEsImNvbS5uZW1hLmJhdHRlcnljYWxpYnJhdGlvbiJd
2. Unplug and let the phone die with normal use
3. charge it fully without a break.
4. done. thank me if it helps
This resets the battery stats. It was noted awhile back from someone at Google that this doesn't help with the battery. I used to use this app all the time after a flash and then a couple of months back i stopped using it and really haven't noticed a difference. I'm not trying to ruin your moment of helpfulness but I really don't think it helps with the battery.

No problem. You are right. This will not help if your battery is actually draining. It only changes what android thinks your battery level is at. this can get screwed up after a flash, depending on many factors of the rom. It also is different with every device. What it helps with is when your stats are off. for example temple run takes 60% of your battery when you play for 5 minutes and you know it isn't running, or it drains fast to 1% then lasts another 6 hours. So if you are noticing poor battery life, make sure it is really bad, not just reported wrong. I will edit the OP to say this more clear.

This is what really fixes the issue. Clearing battery stats with an app or through cwm is redundant.
I don't recommend discharging all the way though
I thought fully charging the battery reset the stats. No?

I think partially, but I know for a fact this process works great and isn't that hard. It resets things better from my understanding because it totally wipes stats instead of just re-calibrating some things

Battery drain

My desire s battery drops from 100% to ~15% after about an hour of surfing with edge mobile network.(with different roms) And my friend tell me that this is unusual. I have tried calibrate the battery with the battery calibrate app and it didn't help . It's there anyway to solve this such as flashing baseband?
Thanks for helping.

first open battery usage and investigate which app eat a lot of power.
sometimes just restart the phone will clear out the issue.
The app which eat many power is the browser but I have tried other browsers too but same problem happened.
I have restarted and flashed tons of times and ROMs but same happened.

- which rom are you using? official or custom ?
- try to restart phone, donot open any browser and see if the battery still drain?
I tried cm stable, miui stable , HTC sense ROMs. It only drain when I surf with my edge mobile network. If I use WiFi its normally draining , about two to three hours.

if the same radio, try to flash another one
if problem with different radio, may be bad coverage in your location?
Try to move to another place with good coverage and give it a try
As i remember i never flashed the radio. Can u suggest which radio should i use?
Does baseband affect the battery life? If yes l, which baseband should I flash? Thx

Can we use that if i'm using hboot 2.00.002?
- firstly check to see what radio version are you using now?
- make sure your phone was rooted when calibrate battery. Is it rooted?
serious battery problem
OK, I have a serious problem. I updated official RUU, and my phone is running smooth. Battery lasts 1-2 days, everything is working fine. But last night battery was on 17% and I put it to charge at 12pm, woke up at 6am and it was on 33%. I'm charging it right now and it's up to 41% then drops to 39% and so on. Tried another charger - same thing. It won't charge! No new apps, no new settings, battery stats shows the same power use,.... Battery health is good, Auto sync is off,.... I have Go Power Master, Juice Defender, shows no problems. 3G is off, it's on GSM only, Wi-Fi is off, GPS is off and so on, my phone is fully optimised and this happened last night. I charged it while off and now it's on 37%! So I guess it's not a software issue. Anybody has an answer or a clue what could be the problem, please? Is my battery dead (year of use)? Thanks in advance.
try to restart your phone?
Tried that. I'm currently charging it power off, turned it on and it's still draining. While it's off!
i guess it's battery problem. Borrow another battery from your friend and try again.
Well, it was a strange thing... I've noticed that GO Power Master is killing like 25 apps and prolonging time for some 2 and a half hours when you hit optimise button every 2 minutes. So some apps are running in the back and draining the battery. So I uninstalled some of them (clock widget, Noom, Zoner antivirus,...) and restarted phone and by the end of the day it was all stabilised like before. I don't know what happened. I'm still testing it but I've managed to charge it to 100% and there was no drain over night. We'll see.

Noom
I have a S2 and every day, at 20:00 the phone starts a process and gets very hot and also drains the battery.
I discover that if I freeze the Noom app, it doesn't happen.
So, I blame noom for your draining issues and mine.
Does anybody else having this problem?
Regards
I didn't had a problem since uninstall, but it happened again later, I think it was from Firefox. While it was on charger, I got popup note saying something like "phone is using more than current can deliver, try to kill some apps or turn phone off while charging." First time I see that note. Probably because it was on Sense, not on launcher. I've noticed that Firefox is using a lot of memory, uninstalled it and it was all normal like before.

I had this problem, but svery time it was solved with rebooting. It showed normal percentage. I think, you just need to reboot device sometimes, may be once in two days. I suppose to think the couse of ghis problem is a kernel) it can be engaged with not an exact process, so battery drains. Try to change kernel, or rom, or battery)

annoying battery life issue

Hi folks,
since some days my battery drives me crazy...
Last week i flashed CM10 by nk111. Nice ROM, but my battery lasted only for some hours with normal usage. So I went back to MIUI...problem stayed.
Yesterday I flashed Jellytime and replaced the battery. The problem stayed as well. At 6 pm battery was full, I restored my apps with Titanium, used it a bit and when I was going to bed at 10 p.m. battery was 81%. Getting up at 5:30 this morning --> battery was 41%.
After the battery was full yesterday night I used display for maybe 10 minutes, why there are 36% battery usage by th display?
WTF happened to my system by flashing CM10 by nk111???
Any help is appreciated!
PS:
Baseband-Version: 20.72.30.0833U_3831.17.00.310
Kernel-Version: 3.0.50-g6ea80e4
First, do you have Google now on. It really drains the battery. If that doesn't help install better battery stats and let it go through a couple of cycles, it will help you pinpoint if any apps or wakelocks are draining your battery.

I don't use Google Now. I use the same apps withe the same intensity than in better battery times...
Could you please give me a recommendation for a battery stats tool?
Thanks!

app called carat could also help you find the battery sucking thing. It's a bit more simple than battery stats, you'll like it if you're not an expert.
it doesn't need to be a new app that is sucking power, it could be the poorly made update of some app that you're using for a long time.
I installed both apps.
But in both I can't find any kind of statistics about consumed power by apps or something similar, am I that stupid?

Bbs needs to run for at least a full battery cycle to give you a clear picture, if recommend running it for at least a day

I get max 24 hours battery life , sometimes 12 hours , so it's not something to worry. If you speak 2-3 hours and WiFi on another 2-3 hours that is the battery în my case 12 hours max.

IT IS something to worry, cause battery behaviour changed dramatically while I didn't change my usage of the phone.
40% battery loss over night should be a clear indication of abnormal behaviour.

you must run carot a day or two, than it will display some apps on the first page and the approximate battery life you get if you kill them. read the manual also..
Yesterday in the evening I realized a 96% entry in the Partial Wavelocks section - AndroidMediaScanner. I freezed it (I know where my pictures and music is located...), did a full load on the battery and for 4 hours the battery remained at 100%. I really thought the problem is solved...but in the morning...31%
But - the 'Media' entry in the android accu stats is gone, I think this is a partial success.
In the BBS app, there is no remarkable value - the biggest is 3,8%.
When I watch the graphs - WiFi and Awake is nearly completetly blue over the whole night (unfortunately, I can't take screenshots right now for any reason).
I'm a bit helpless right now, will charge the phone now and keep an eye on BBS the next hours/days.
androidmediascanner shouldn't be the bad guy, it's a system app that we all have. maybe your battery is the problem...

I inserted a new battery last week without any change. Don't think both batteries are broken.
The common way to solve this is to do a fresh install. Leave it for a day without any apps yo see if it is ROM related. See if the battery life improve. Install one app per day and monitor your phone awake period with screen on, it should be almost same.

Yesterday night I made a full wipe, installed Jellytime and Gapps and went to sleep...
In the morning --> 67%.
Very odd, normally this would probably indicating a defect battery, but it is new!
Maybe a hardware defect?
Maybe RRU Problem?
Hi,
I have a similar problem here. I was using the desire s for a long timne with stock rom (2.x android), a full battery was enough for ~2 days. Then I rooted the device and installed CM10 (NK111 alpha build).
2 things changed:
The battery is empty after 24h or less.
The wireless network is worse than before. This is my subjective impression but there are places at home or in the office where wifi worked before and stopped working.
I'm starting excessive tests (disabling everything, removing apps, running carat) during xmas holidays to find the reason.
My guess what it might be: to root the device I did a downgrade, including a radio downgrade. Now I run baseband 20.23.30.0802U_38.02.01.11 which is known as "Saga Test RUU" and has the lowest version number of the RRUs listed in the forum. I did not found anything about this in the forum or with google but maybe this is the reason.
My average battery stats with normal use (whole day, used the phone a few minutes):
~30% Display
~25% Wifi
~17% Mobile Standby
~5% Android Os
For comparison, my Motorola Defy has in a similar scenario ~5% Wifi and ~3% Mobile Standby

I humbly seek the counsel of masters. (battery life)

I used to have great battery life. Nothing spectacular, but I could get around 4 hours screen on time on a single charge.
Somewhere along the line, on my journey of ROM hopping, this has changed. Currently, I'm getting about 30 minutes of screen time before my battery drops to 50%.
Using better battery stats, I think I see that my phone is never sleeping. But I really don't know what I'm looking at or where to start to solve my problem.
I'm currently on Carbon running the latest lean kernel. I'm not undervolted or overclocked, or anything.
I've superwiped my phone. I've killled maps location reporting.
Please. Help me...

Over/underclocking plus undervolting can help with battery life. DS battery saver can help put your phone to sleep by shutting down apps running in the background.

go back into BBS and check out the partial wakelocks and alarms tabs. those should tell you whats keeping the phone awake
Turn off Location Services and other apps that require location GPS. They really kill your battery a lot faster. Or you can get Wakeclock Detector from the play store to see which specific app is draining your battery and preventing it from deep sleep. Hope this helps.
Turns out I had an otg wakelock.
I wiped cache and davlik, fixed permissions, and it went away.
Thanks all.

[Q] Way to find out why phone not deep sleeping?

I am running Skyfall with stock kernel. I was getting decent battery life, but today noticed that phone was awake for 2 of the 4 hours that it was off the charger. I have gsam and wake detector and wake detector shows nothing crazy that wakes it. I did disable location reporting, so maybe that might be pissing off some apps? I have not installed any new apps, only change was location reporting.
Thanks in advance.
Here is what I use,

Works great for helping to find those pesky apps.

Was it doing it before you installed gsam? I installed it and my battery went downhill. After I removed it battery got dramatically better.

It seemed like it. I installed it while I still had BBS running. While I was running GSAM my awake time was about 2.5 hours out of just under 4 hrs total and the phone was just in my pocket most of the time. After I removed it and rebooted the awake time stayed proportional to the time I was actually using it. Other than turning on WiFi optimization I can't think of anything else I did. So it may have been either one but I didn't have WiFi optimization on before I installed GSAM and my battery life was okay.

I have tried with and without gsam. I flashed the lastest firmware and radios and also the snapdragon app that monitors your use and is supposed to save on battery and today I got 3 hours of SOT, off charger for 16 hours and still have 55% left. And wake time back down to normal use. Im about to flash the latest Skyfall so we will see how things go on that build.
So started getting bad wake locks again. I looked and saw media server using a good portion. I have 0 media on my phone as I just stream. Anyone else seeing this issue?
