Data messages sent from iphone users don't always download - General Questions and Answers

I have an S4 and have experienced a problem where some MMS I get from iPhone users don't come thru as they should.
My biggest issue is with the VCF files they send me. Iphone users love to send someone's contact info as a vcf and they are coming in as a dot for me and not something I can save a and open.
I get the same "dot" for certain picture messages. In general the ha doing of messages as sent from iPhone users isn't great and one thing I'd like to see android be innately better at.

Anyone, please?

There will always be issues as apple doesn't use the standard protocol for Mms. It has been an issue as long as I remember and even WP has issues with I phones.

Threaded Group SMS!?

Can someone with the One X comment on whether or not the device supports threaded group SMS w/ iPhone and Blackberry users? My biggest gripe with the Galaxy Nexus was that when I received group SMS messages, it wouldn't show the group and threaded responses. Instead, it showed separate messages for each response from each user. Coming from an iPhone, this is a must have feature for me and I wanted to know if the One X supported it. Thanks.
If it doesn't there is an SMS app you can get that supports threaded group chat. Not sure of the name, but it's out there.

None of them work well...I've tried them all with the Galaxy Nexus and that's why I got rid of it.
I'm surprised there aren't more people who are concerned about having this feature.

I'm concerned, I'm coming from a blackberry and I use that function all the time. My One X is on order so if it doesn't, I'm SOL already haha
I sent out a massive group text when I got my phone to inform everyone of my new number, but the responses came back in their own threads.
It's not something I would utilize very often, so I'm not too concerned about finding an app to do it. I'm pretty happy with the stock Messaging app aside from this.

Thanks for letting me know about this. Just to confirm, there are no options to turn Group SMS (or MMS) on in the settings of the messaging app? I currently have many group chats with work colleagues as well as personal friends and this might be a deal killer for me (unfortunately).
Received messages go in their own threads, I've been looking in the settings and don't see a way to change that so far.
If your group consists solely of smartphone users, why not use whatsapp?

We used to but since everyone switch to the iPhone and Blackberry there has been no reason to. I'll be the first one in the "groups" to switch to Android and not having this basic functionality sucks. Even dumb phones are able to do this nowadays so I'm pretty disappointed.

Well, at least BBM is coming to iOS and Android eventually. It's not much of a consolation, I'm sure, but at least it's something. (rumour alert! don't crucify me if it never happens! )
I found this on the issues list. I don't know if the more stars = faster response, but it's worth a shot.

Problem with GroupMe is that if someone had once installed the app and then subsequently deleted it, the app doesn't recognize that and fails to send them the message. Unfortunately, most people I know have at some time or another, used GroupMe and then gotten rid of it.
Handcent doesn't work? I've got a few friends with iPhones that want me to join their group chat, so I installed the add on to Handcent.. haven't tried it yet though.
It's not an issue if that's how the app is designed..

This is by far the most infuriating part of this phone.. My three year old BlackBerry supported group chat, but my top of the line android phone has to use a third party app that stumbles, doesn't send, triple sends, and is so freaking ugly. How hard can it be for someone to fix it so I don't have to have an app and can use the stock messaging program to talk with my friends.

OH Jeeeeez. I finally switched over from my iPhone 4S... because ICS and the One XL seemed to finally have come up to par with Apple's platform. Love the lightning fast LTE, the camera is only marginally worse than the 4S (close though)... and the screen is gorgeous on the XL! HOWEVER... I get a lot of group texts from my foodie friends with pics of food, or whatever... and actually... this situation with the inability to deal with those texts is almost a deal breaker for me! I had no idea ICS hadn't dealt with that yet... and worse... even HTC hasn't been able to recognize and address that shortcoming with all their coding expertise either? Yikes... I'm either going to have to go back to the 4S, or deal with a flagship phone that fails on a very basic requirement in 2012...
What a buzzkill...

Okay everybody... check this out. I was looking for a way to get Visual Voicemail working on my One XL... and ran into a dead end. Finally got in touch with a helpful ATT "Advanced Tech Support" guy (after being forwarded from standard tech support)... and he directed me not to the AT&T Visual Voicemail app that is not compatible with the One X... but he says the AT&T Messages app is the one I need. So I installed it... and not only does it work very well for visual voicemail on the One X... the SMS/MMS feature of the app ACTUALLY THREADS GROUP SMS/MMS !!!! And pretty well too.
I've only had it installed about a half hour... but if it's not too buggy... I think this App not only solves the Visual Voicemail issue... but also potentially the SMS/MMS group threading problem. It won't have tons of features for power users (not very customizable... unfortunately)... but for those of us who NEEDED threaded group texts... we may be all set.
Linky below...
(Update: I was not able to post the link because I'm new to the forum... just search for "AT&T Messages" in the Android store.)

Why on Earth do people use MMS? Am I missing something here?

Every time a device gets AOSP (for the first time) I see a flood of posts whining about MMS being broken. (I've had an Evo 4G and an Evo 3D and saw this on both when they first got AOSP, now I see it in the unofficial CM9 thread here.)
Why MMS? What's good about MMS that you can't get with any other app or service?
Did I miss the train?
Do you know what mms is? From your post it doesn't sound like it.

Yea.. I gather that as well.
How else would one sext and send nudes?
1) It's universal.
No matter what phone the other person is using, chances are it supports MMS.
2) It's in-line.
Unlike email, you can just go "Here's a picture" instead of "I just sent you an email, you should go check it out"

I know its a serious question but made me laugh a bit. "Why God why!!" Lol
My girlfriend and I send MMS's (plural?lol) all the time. Sometimes she wants to send me something she saw or maybe a new outfit she bought With email I don't always have autosync on for battery life and its just that extra hassle. If I'm trying to send something pretty high resolution I will use email though since it doesn't compress it.
its the easiest and fastest way to send a pic to a person on another mobile phone, any other mobile phone, any OS, any platform, any carrier.
was this a joke?

I guess I just don't get why you couldn't just email pictures or videos. All you have to do is tap after you've taken your picture and the UI asks how you want to share it. I don't know a single human being who still uses MMS outside of these forums and maybe my mother, who keeps buying feature-phones. :^\
It's easier to send a quick picture to a phone than through email. I don't know much of my friend's email addresses off the top of my head

I guess the bigger question is why not?
Almost not wanting to dignify the question... But....
Mms is also used as a group chat in messaging apps like gosms. Allows you to text multiple people at once and everyone in the chat can see everyone elses response. Just fyi

Here is a better question: Why do people still use CDMA carriers such as verizon and sprint? SIM lacking carriers are almost non-existant outside the USA.
Why MMS??? Then why sms ?? Yeah you could SMS but then if u wanted to send a pic or video then you would have to open a separete app which takes more time mms is simply faster

Please explain to me...

Hey guys,
Could someone please explain to me why the HOX is so inferior to the iPhone 4S as far as sending and recieving pictures via mms and email. I very rarely am able to actually recieve pics sent by text, and I have to send pictures individually over email versus 2,3 or even 4 pics per email on the iPhone. Video's are totally out of the question on the HOX. This is really the only complaint I have with the HTC. Is thee anything i can do, or are we just screwed?
I send and receive images all the time with no issues. Perhaps you're misplacing blame?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
It's not that hard to add another contact in the "To" line in the Gmail app.
And are you using a different SMS app? Maybe it's AT&T, I only get EDGE on my HOX cause I'm on T-mobile.
From my sexy white, Nocturnaled HTC One X
Yeah I've never had a problem with mms messages either, and I can also attach as many pictures to an email as I want. I think you've got something else going on because these definitely aren't HOX related issues.
He probably doesn't know how to use anything besides an iPhone, I just sent an email to 3 people without having to remake the same email.
From my sexy white, Nocturnaled HTC One X
I don't use the stock mail app, but gmail allows me to attach plenty of pics. My brother has a 4s, even he can't send large vids via email, we use YouTube for that.
Are you stock or rooted or ....can you be more specific?
No problems here bro. Stock messaging app and gmail work fine too... So does k-9 mail..
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
Not receiving sms/mms probably has to do with the carrier and not the phone. I've never had any issues sending or receiving picture messages.
As far as sending multiple pictures per email, this isn't that hard either. Open gallery, press the share button and chose your method (example Gmail), then select the pictures you want to attach and hit next. Gmail will open with all the pictures attached and all you gotta do is enter email address (one or multiple).

Pretty easy to see how you got to 2,000+ posts. Do you ever add anything constructive?
Misplacing blame? What a bunch of over sensitive girls. I asked some simple questions and asked for advice. I have never been able to get a video to play from gmail on this phone. I am constantly having people ask me if I got the pictures they texted me. Several times today I tried to email 4 pictures at once. Every time it failed. Finally had to end them individually and they all went through. I'm on AT&T. Handcent SMS and the stock ICS email app.
Metalhead, you seem to be the only one mature enough to give a straight answer. What do you suggest I look at to fix these problems?
I have had the same problem with the mail app connected to exchange on wifi, it wouldn't let me send an email with pics. It might just be the stock rom causing issues.

Need some more information. Rooted? stock? rom? Handcent works fine for me, i'm rooted, can add multiple pics, it does resize them cos its an 8mp camera, i use the gmail mail app and can easily send to multiple recipients with multiple attachments. Dont use the ICS mail app, like gmail one better.
"Misplacing blame" was a fancy way of calling you an idiot. You didnt ask specific questions as much as you did complain and compare the one x to the iPhone.

Pair this with SMS Popup and it is really great, especially compared to BiteSMS.

OP, your scenario is strange. I haven't had either of the issues that you are experiencing since I've had my HOX. MMS messages send and receive just fine for me and I have no problem sending multiple pictures via the Gmail app.
In the past I have had these issues on other phones, but it was usually due to AT&T network issues. Have you tried holding the power button down for ten seconds? This is supposed to simulate a battery pull. Beyond that, maybe a master reset?

Thanks for the heads up! JB Messaging is awesome.
Beamed from my KingCobra1X powered HOXL on Rogers.
As far as the email issue, some more info would help. Is it gmail, exchange, hotmail, or what?
You have to remember that you're sending what can be large files, and you can end up with a size limitation there, which largely depends on your email provider and what they allow/tolerate.
As to the MMS issues, do try stock. 3rd party apps have been known to not always play nice on various devices, particularly brand new ones, and especially brand new ones running custom ROMs. So it could be that, or carrier issues, or the other party's carrier, etc.
Finally, before completely knocking the phone and pissing off people who a) like said phone and b) actually know a few things that can help, check the attitude and tone it down. Don't get pissed at the responses you get when you march in the door and, quite loudly, let your ignorance show.

Actually.... Some of the most insightful things I've heard have been from drunk people.
I haven't had the photo problem, the video issue was just that my files were too large, I toned down the quality and was fine.

[Q] Switching from iPhone...Need some help

Making the switch, as you can tell from the title. Deciding between the HOX ($50 w/ contract) or the Atrix HD (30). Ive been leaning towards the HOX and I love the display. My one big question is does it support (or possible with JB?) threaded group texting without a 3rd party app. I tend to communicate alot via group texting. From what I've read the Motorola Atrix HD does, correct me if I am wrong, and is pretty comparable in specs. Any help is appreciated.
I can't answer the texting question, but I hope the answer is yes because the phones aren't even in the same league. IMO.

By threaded you mean kinda like a chat room style. On the stock message app all your in coming text will be separated by contacts.
Under contacts there are group actions and group text is one of the options - under cleanrom.

Yea, that is exactly what I meant. Can't believe this isn't standard across the board. Can anyone confirm that it is in the Atrix HD (Prob should go in that forum, but figured Id ask anyways). Leaning towards the HOX anyways, just wish it had that feature without having to use GoSMS or something of the sort.

This may not work for people who don't use whatsapp.
I had similar issues with using kik messenger. Couldn't convince enough friends to join to make group messages worthwhile.
I can confirm that you can send group messages with stock sms on the stock Evita, but I think responses come back individually. I'll edit this response if I find otherwise.
If somebody sends a group SMS on an iPhone, it will not be like a chat room for you. You will not be able to see everybody the text was sent to and when you reply it will only go to the person who sent it to you. Also, when anybody else who was in the group text replies, you will get each of those replies in an individual thread as an MMS.
Seems like a lot of people weren't really giving you the answers you were looking for.
Having said all that, I love my One X.

[Q]Seeing other peoples #'s when receiving a mass text?

Howdy! Semi new Photon Q LTE user but not new to Android. Previous phone was a rooted Samsung Epic 4G.
When I get a mass text from someone in my contacts, if they send the same message to multiple people at once (i.e. a mass text) I will also see who else they sent the message to. If I reply to JUST the person in my contacts, the message gets sent to everyone else that was originally part of the mass text as well.
Figuring this was a problem with the integrated text app itself, I went and tried GoSMS, to no avail. GoSMS also has this same issue. I was wondering if this was limited to other smartphones or a carrier, but it appears to not be the case. A friend of mine has a basic dumbphone on T-Mobile, and another friend of mine is on Verizon with an older Droid phone, and yet another is on a newer Android phone (at least new to them) with US Cellular.
What is causing this and how do I fix it?
Yeah I don't think it's the messaging app or our phones. Out does the same to me and my wife has the iphone 4s and it still does it. From what she says anyone that replies to the mass txt out goes to everyone the message was sent to.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
So this is a possible carrier thing?
It's really annoying. I only want to reply to the person who sent it to me, not everyone that received it.
