Hey all,
I've recorded and uploaded the video for a reproducible bug that I encountered after updating to the latest Google Maps and Google Search.
Essentially, every time Google Search is manually refreshed, Google Maps seems to crash.
I've got a rooted stock Nexus 5 on Android 4.4.2.
Google Maps version 7.6.0
Google Search version 3.2.17.1009776.arm
I've already tried the following things:
1) Cleared data on both apps and restarted the device.
2) Cleared cache via stock recovery.
None of these fixes the issue.
The only fix I found was to downgrade to the older Google Maps app.
Could anyone let me know if they are having the same issue and if anyone found a fix for it other than downgrading the app.
Thanks!

I was having this same issue on the 2013 n7 as well. So I cleared both apps' data, then uninstalled the updates on search then maps. One that's done, I force stopped maps just to be safe. I then reinstalled the search update first, followed by maps. Once both installed, I turned on Google now first before even opening maps. So far, I haven't had a crash, even after a restart. Maybe the order matters, maybe not, maybe it was dumb luck. Give it a shot, can't hurt.

Nice, that seemed to fix my problem! Appreciate the tip
@arts711 I tried your suggested solution but it didn't work for me. I guess I'll have to stick with maps 7.4.0 for now. Appreciate the tip though.

I am also getting this error on ICS icysnap V2.0. I think this error is occurring due to some bug or incompatibility of latest google play service apk with our device. I have submitted the error report to google. I hope they will fix this soon. For the time being i have uninstalled the google play service. By going to Security > Device Administrator then uncheck the google admin. After this you can uninstall the application in usual way.
Previous version of google play services working fine.

I have also experienced this. Mostly happened while Gmail is syncing. Happened on cm-9, cm-10.1.6, and affected apps on cm-7.But Play Services works perfect on official stock gingerbread. So I think it's a combination of causes. Authentication of apps and services running on unofficial roms, and APIs that are built for armv7 devices. But I'm only guessing. Haven't had time to study my logcats yet. May 14 update seems to be a little better. But it's still not fixed.
Edit: May 16 update, still not fixed. Have read and verified that it works better on WiFi. On WiFi, Gmail, after syncing (and caching that sync) will not cause Play Services to close. But on mobile network, it does.
May 19 update to Google Play Services (version 4.4.52):
I think it's fixed
Updated several apps and synced Gmail. Did not get annoying message. Running cm-9.2.0 (hephappy).

Use a file manager and go to / system/app, and look to see if gmscore is still there. Long press on it to select and view properties. Properties should include permissions, which should be set to:
User: rw-
Groups: r--
Others: r--
The binary representation of this is 644
If gmscore is not there, then you may have it in your backups from TiBU.

Managed to fix it but I had to reinstall all the apps I had removed one by one as TB would not do a batch.
Kept throwing an error.
I really need to know what I can and cant remove as I rooted this phone to get rid of some of the apps I dont use they just clutter the whole system
Same bug after reinstallation of the firmware. I think there are some issues on Google's side.
FIXED!!! Finally Found This Fix!
I was unable to listen to my music for 48 hours, which is hell to me as I'm ALWAYS listening to music. This also looks horrible on Google/Android as I just left iOS (which honestly is a better OS than Android, but Android has come a long way so I'm optimistic about its future...and I also love my Moto X and prefer Android to iOS overall (minus these little annoying issues)). Anyway, finally fixed it by Uninstalling the update made on the Google Play Music app.
Go to Settings - Apps - Google Play Music - and select Uninstall Updates. Hope this helps.

This seems to have fixed the issue for me. Uninstalled Play Music, then reinstalled, and has been working fine since. Good thing too, as it was popping up twice in quick succession every 30 seconds almost. Very frustrating!
Anyway, thanks

I've been having the same problem up until a couple of days ago Play Services worked fine but when ever i open the Google Keyboard the message pops up "Unfortunately Google Play Services has stopped working" and idea what the problem might be. My version is 7.0.97 (1791429-034)

I recently updated my phone to 4.4.3
When I did I noticed that I am not having problems using the Google Search Widget on the home page and within Google Now. When I try to search for something with the keyboard I get a message that says cant load search results. The odd thing is that if I search for the same thing by voice it works just fine. Google Search within Chrome will work fine too with voice or keyboard.
I thought this was an issue with 4.4.3 so I went back to 4.4.2 and same problem! I don't know whats going on this just started for me today. If I clear the data for Google Search it seems to fix it temporarily but it always come back.
Others seem to be having this problem. There are several posts at the bottom from today: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=65976

I have the same issue, just started happening. The problem only affects the Google search widget and search for web. The image, video, etc searches all work.
I think it's pretty wide-spread. I've got 4 devices, some on 4.4.3 and some on 4.4.2 and its occurring on all of them.
There's a pretty long thread on Google Groups here:
Apparently they are aware of the issue and are working on a fix.

Clearing the data on the Google Search App fixes the issue for one search but after I search again it says the same thing. Also images, news, videos and all that other stuff works fine its just web that is broken.
I have been having the same issue for the last 2 days.
After clearing the cache from "Google Search, Google Play and Google Now" I turned and updated each app one by one.
I have discovered that with Google Now DEACTIVATED Search works fine on all my devices.

Hi all, hope all is well. I encountered a problem on my OPO and I didn't manage to solve it, even after searching and reading relevant threads on this forum.
Currently my OPO (not rooted) is running Android 4.4.4 (stock Cyanogen OS 11.0). I am still running Android 4.4.4 as when Lollipop was issued many complained of battery drain issues so I didn't update. Yesterday, Google Play Services updated automatically to version 9.0.82. After the update Chrome, Play Store, Gmail and Google Now are exiting as soon as I try to use them. Thus, I decided to uninstall the Google Play Services updates and I manually installed a version (8.7.03) that doesn't cause the problems mentioned. However, this morning when I connected to WiFi, Google Play Services updated and the problems restarted.
Does anybody know how I can prevent Google Play Services from automatically updating please? If this is not possible, I am considering updating to Marshmallow with Cyanogen OS 13. Is it possible to update to the latter without updating to Lollipop please? Moreover, does the OPO suffer from major bugs/ issues when running Marshmallow please?
p.s: previously I denied both "keep awake" and "wake up" in the Privacy Guard menu of Google Play Services as it fixed the message "Unfortunately Google Play Services has stopped". Yet, this message is appearing again every time I connect to WiFi.
Many thanks, much appreciated!
Hi,
I've got a high battery drain problem with the latest Google Play Services (cmasystemupdateservices causing the wavelock).
There are a couple of reddits about this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus/comments/4jmw74/cmasystemupdateservice_wakelock/
https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidQue..._is_cmasystemupdateservice_its_preventing_my/
but no solution.
I'm running 4.4.4 as well, but my wife's Lollipop phone doesn't have this issue. Given that its an update service causing the issue I wonder if this is Google's way of getting us to upgrade!
If this was affecting all Android phones I'd expect to see more of an outcry about it.
Regards.
I too have this problem. Now have to rolled back to stock play services. Any solution?
Unchecked all in Google play settings
@pda1ey thanks for the Reddit links! Unfortunately, as you mentioned they don't offer solutions to our problems.
@vl319 did Google Play Services autoupdate even though you rolled back to stock version please?
@drmuruga I think Google Play Services still autoupdates with those settings unticked.
Thanks to all for your feedback hope we find a solution.
After i rolled back to stock version, it doesn't auto update until now. But u will keep getting message saying apps wont run until play services is updated.... But it is fine for me.. I tried to reset app preference, disable greenify, amplify, privacy guard but none of these work. Probably we have to wait for new update or reinstall the device

I will follow your suggestion and roll back to stock Play Services. When I manually install Google Play Services 8.7.03 it automatically updates to 9.0.82 after a couple of hours. When you had version 9.0.82 were Gmail and Chrome force closing? Thanks!
I experience same problem on my wife's 4.4. cm and on my 5.1.1 android. Google play services automaticily updated to 9.0 and since then all google related apps is force closing. I noticed, that if I uncheck everything under google play services in privacy guard, apps will work, but then my phone's battery will go down the drain . Is it possible, that Google play services update only, when I open Play store and not completely automaticly?

I am using official COS13 and its stock version is 8.3.01, older than 8.7.03 and it doesn't auto update to new version. and i have no problem of syncing contact, calendar, keep and etc.
@vl319 my stock version is version 5. That's why I tried solving the issue by updating manually to 8.7.03. Unfortunately, my stock version is not compatible with the Apps I use. Thanks for the clarification!
@ircman maybe you can update to a newer version of Google Play Services on your phone to solve the issue. For instance, update to 9.0.83 or 9.0.82. Another user (drmuruga) in a previous post suggested to turn off automatic updates in the Play Store. However, I don't know if it works because I haven't tried it myself.

Sorry, I wasn't exact, now I am using 9.0.83. The problem apeared when the Google Play Services updated automaticaly to 9.0.83. Until that moment the phone and all the apps were working flawlesly. I belive that is something wrong with the newest version of Google Play Services, or that they don't want us to block things like Keep Awake, Location, Wake up, Auto Start (this things drains battery really fast).
Probably the only solution for now is to downgrade Google Play Services, and to somehow block automatic updates for Google Play Services.
@ircman as regards blocking the things you mentioned, I think you still can block them if you want.
Moreover, you can manually uninstall the updates of Google Play Services to temporarily solve the problem. Then either stick with the stock Play Services (vl319 clarified in a previous post that it won't auto update but some Apps might not work) or install a version of Play Services that doesn't cause problems as I did. However, after a few hours it auto updates and the problems start again. Thus, you need to repeat this process (I am repeating this process on average twice daily).
If anybody comes up with a permanent solution or has some advice, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
Hello everyone
I have the same problem you exactly with "google play service" in 9.0.82 release.
it drains my battery and my GPS connection has become very very slow (over 5 min) while with the 8.7.03 release I had no worries.
I am also in version 4.4.4 and I have my wifi, my connection and my GPS data which are off all the time except when I need them.
If anyone has a solution I'm interested

My problem with Google Play Services 9.0.82 is not related to battery drain and GPS. On my OPO 9.0.82 is causing some Google Apps to FC (as I explained in the first post).
If your OPO is rooted there are some solutions on this forum on how to block Google Play Services from updating. tc

I know there is a feature in titanium backup that allows apps to detach it from the market. Wonder if it works for play services.
Me and several friends of the German PX5 community have severe problems with google maps on PX5 units.
It often hangs especially after input destination on route calculation or after that starting moving map, but also after some time of moving map up.
I have the issue with the latest hot audio rom as with Malaysk both using the same kernel from rocky 28-AUG, others told having the issue for some time already.
I'm testing the unit for 4 weeks now and first haven't experienced the issue so much, but after others told I tested google maps more intensively and it is reproducible with increasing intensity. You can trigger it easily doing a voice input to some city some 100 miles away "OK Google - route to ....". I usually need only few tries then.
Or you can download version 4.46.2.
9.46.2 is the right version

Same issue here, just when you start to navigate it hangs. Maybe when maps starts its route announcement, never hear that. Happens in all roms that I have tried. Just installed Malaysk V5, tried V4, stock and rooted HA. Tried all the forum tips and tricks like turn off navigation monitoring, be persistent, no offline maps.
Yes, remove maps and install the 9.46.2 apk and don't update it until the issue is fixed. Lots of links to it on the forum to it or can be found on the web. I also tried 9.50.2 and it worked about 95% of the time. I heard someone trying a beta 9.61.0 said it worked OK. Let's hope it does and it is released soon.
Until then it would be nice if someone with the know how could trouble shoot this and get to the root of the issue.
Same thing here.. MX head unit. the only version that works without issues is 9.46.2.
Is this issue in PX3 units as well or they are able to run the latest version without issues?? Anyone knows?

Issue is that if you use AndroidAuto, it will update the Maps application and you are back where you started.
In titanium backup, you can turn off the auto update per app.

No but in play store you can only do this for all apps. In titanium you can do this for every app separately.

Right, but AndroidAuto will ask you to update Maps, and if you say no, it will exit. Unless you're saying the titanium backup will override this behaviour?
So anyone knows if google maps new versions work ok on PX3 head units?
I don't but no big deal to try.
If not just delete and install older apk, login all your data is in google cloud.
Only offline maps take time and data to download.

I do not have a PX3 unit ( I have a PX5), so I am asking if anyone with PX3 unit have the same issues with google maps.
I recommend keeping 9.42 apk on the device in case it is accidentally updated in the field and rollback needed.
I had to clear data memory of Google App, Services and Playstore due to several crashes of google - indicating more issues then just google maps.
After that autoupdate was enabled again and done, so be careful if you have to do this some day, disable wifi or whatvever to prevent update.
It is not a problem to install the older apk over the newer, but offline maps are gone then and so it is better to deinstall and reinstall anyway to prevent problems. Selecting the offline map ranges is somehow buggy (random shifts) and download takes lot of time and data some GB.
Not that this is a solution, but I've switched to using Waze.
Doesn't crash.
Doesn't work with Android Auto either though.
Can anyone provide the correct link to the working Google maps? There are multiple variations.
Is it this one?

Hi,
My downloads are stuck at 99/100% every time I try to download of update an app. The only solution seems to be to disable the Google app and reboot, following which they seem to work.
However I lose the Google feed and weather and my at a glance widget doing so. I tried googling but haven't found a concrete solution.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
This is a random problem with the latest play Services. Last week the update reverted and it looks like they reverted it again. Revert play store and play store Services to stock (delete the updates) and just update all your other apps again.
Thanks for the tip. I tried doing this but it's still the same now just at a random percentage between 80-90% instead of the 100% bug. Nothing seems to fix it with only the Google app being disabled helping.
