Storage space is running out - some system functions may not work - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the 32GB N5, and currently have about 500MB free. That seems like it should be enough to me, but Android obviously thinks differently. I called Google Nexus support and talked to someone who had zero knowledge/training, so no help there, they just told me to delete stuff until the message disappeared(which I find to be an insulting "solution").
My question is, is this message a bug? And/or what is the minimum amount of space that needs to be left unused for all of the "system functions" to work correctly.
My appreciation to anyone who can answer this question.

no, not a bug. thats how it is on every android device. on the first generation devices, it was 100mb, on later devices its 400-500mb. you phone needs about 300-500mb to really function, this space is used by caches. i go past this point fairly often with my device(s), and usually delete/move photos to get my storage memory back.

I know this is for the Nexus 7 but the same logic applies running out of storage space - 500MB Warningl
Hope this helps you

Now I'm really wishing the N5 had an SD card slot. Thanks for the info, you would think Google would be more forth coming with that info.

Same feeling here bro, but the next best thing is a USB OTG with an SD card

How many apps do you leave on the internal memory vs. puting on the sd card?

I only just learned today how you can move apps to the sd card. I stored almost all my programs on my tilt2 on the card, but I did not realize you could do that with this phone.
I don't, I use S2EXT and create a ext3 partition on the sd giving me moar storage space for apps. I ran into a lot of issues moving things to sd causing apps to act goofy.
I don't move any apps to my sd, and you really don't need to unless your going to have a hundred or so apps..
Zero. I'm a recovering apps2sd user.
I got tired of having to swap skins temporarily on the sense-based gb ROM I'm running, to get the icons for apps I've put in folders to show correctly.
Not to mention, they run faster.
SD cards are best for all that big stuff, like music, pics, vids, roms, etc.
The way I see it, If you have that many apps that would require spilling over to the SD card, some house cleaning is in order.
I don't install apps to SD card either. According to Titanium, I've got 90 apps installed. I've still got over 600 MB free of internal storage (using CM7). All of my big stuff is on SD card such as music and videos.

You and id10terrordfw are nuts.
Next question is how many of those do you actually USE?
And you've succeeded in making me curious as to how many I have...
Edit:
48, with 906mb free. Sure seems like a lot.
That's probably because user apps doesn't necessarily mean ONLY apps intentionally downloaded to the phone that are not present in the base ROM or something, I guess.
Unless you are running out of memory which is virtually impossible for most its not necessary.

You got me curious so I scanned through my user app list. I actually use almost all of them, albeit some not as frequently as others. I guess I'm just an app junkie as a holdover from my iPhone days. Switching from iPhone to Android a couple of months ago was quite the expensive proposition app-wise. I've probably spent over $100 in the google and amazon markets combined. I'm one of those "gotta have the pay version" type of people, to support the devs and I hate ads in my apps.

Luckily I had only bought a couple of apps for my blackberry. That os, at that time, just seemed too clunky... I knew there had to be, or at least would be in the future, something better... Enter Android.
Buying paid versions of the apps is just the right thing to do. Though I only consider buying a paid-version app that I've been able to at least test drive first by way of a free/ad supported version beforehand.
(Oh, and did I mention, donating to devs here on XDA is the right thing to do, as well. )
none here as well, i still have plenty of free space on the internal memory while my SD card is almost full, i've been actively deleted things i don't need off the card, so i'd imagine it would be THAT much more full.
None.
All my 70+ apps are on the internal memory, and none on SD.

Storage capacity question, increase or something

Hello All!
Just got HTC One S in the mail today, I was aware of the limited storage of the phone by reading the forums here, users said I should have around 10GB of "user" storage. Quite far from the advertised 16 haha!
I understand the ~2GB is dedicated to apps etc.
My question is:
Has anyone figured out how to repartition the storage in order to decrease app storage, and increase user storage? (maybe by a different rom etc?)
I personally wouldn't mind having 1GB of app space just to fit a few more albums of music (I love music on my phone)
I'm thinking even if I used nobloat to remove the t-mobile preloaded stuff, I would only increase the application storage (which does nothing for but increase just the application storage space?)
Somebody give me some help here
Anybody??
Removing the bloat will only free up space on your system partition, not /data where your downloaded apps are stored. I'm not sure if anyone has repartitioned the One S yet, though.

Your HTC Hero prolly had S-OFF or a similar removal of protections in place. As of now, without S-OFF we cannot repartition, becaue we cannot write to locked areas of the NAND / NVRAM (whatever it is exactly...) and therefore we can't resize partitions.
Nope, no S-off
Question
the question is another: can we physically change the sd-card hosted inside the phone with another one of a bigger capacity? (32 / 64 gb like in the HTC Mozart)

That's assuming its an actual SD Card, and not some memory soldered in place (most likely)

Run some read/write speed tests, you'd be pretty lucky to get an SD card that could put up the numbers this phone does. It's a very tiny chance it's an SD card, but I refuse to give up hope until it's proven.

me too, as I am getting up to 18mb read and I backup a lot, so it is welcome
I am converted to no sd card phones, as the memory here is fine for me--got dropbox/google drive etc if needed
If you have decent coverage in your area you can try google play. And I'm pretty sure you can download the music directly to your phone from it, if the area you'll be in is spotty.

Do you... He said he read the fourms and was aware of the 10gb user space.
I think he's asking if that can be changed.
And to answer that, without S-Off I don't think so.

You definitely won't without s-off. Or, more likely an exploit like Blackrose which was developed for the N1. Where it simulates s-off to resize partitions. But, is not true s-off as related to the secure flag. I don't know if it is easy for dev to look at Blackrose in N1 sub-forum and carry that over to One S--
So were talking about this:
4 GB's for the OS, 1 GB for the system apps (after potential resize). Gaining only 1 GB for the User. Increasing the User avalible space to 11GB's.
That seems like a lot of work for only 1GB. Unless someone could trim the OS down by half. 13GB usable....hmmm!

Another solution could be a usb host mode... DonĀ“t know if that is possible?

[Question] Htc Inspire 4G Camera SdCard

Hello,
I have a question about HTC Inspire 4G. I accidently stripped the gold pins on the sdcard module, so when you insert an sdcard inside of the sdcard module (slot), and then activate the camera, the camera activates, and a popup message says "Please insert an sdcard". Well, obviously it will say that, because I messed up the pins inside the module. I can get a replacement for 10.00 usd on ebay for it. But, thats not my question, I would like to see if I can root the phone, and have the pictures be saved to the internal memory instead of the sdcard.. Does anyone think this will work? If I root the phone, will the camera give me an option to save a picture anywhere else other then that darn sdcard slot? I appreciate it who ever is willing to help

I can only speak for the ROM I'm currently using, codefireX. I just looked at Camera and Gallery settings, and I don't see an option to choose where to save pictures.
Well, before you root the phone you will need to repair the sd card module. Which will then have solved your issue regarding the cam.

Also, is their any rom I can use that will have a feature to save pictures/recorded videos to the internal memory? If not I might as well go spend a few bucks on ebay and use gentle hands to dissamble the htc xD

I guess it could be theorerically possible by modyfing the script (heck if I know how to), but since the phone has limited memory I don't see much fotos being stored.
If it is possible then one could add a script for it to use 'x' amount of memory (to limit the amount used) and an option which asks where you want to save it. Which would get tedious after a while being asked constantly where to save the pic - or it could ask once per session. As well you could set it to default and somewhere in settings to change the default.

One of the apps the developer said that would work is a free app called Camera ICS. Idk, I am in the process of downloading it. I shall let you all know if this could be an option.

For everyone with the S4 google edition. As you know the ability of many apps to be able to write to the sd card was busted with the 4.3 update. Just got off the phone with Samsung and explained the situation and they said they have not received any other calls on this and basically nothing will be done until they receive more calls. If like me you don't want to root no. Some apps that could save to SD card(camera JB+)developers are working on a fix but from what I read today it doesn't sound good. One program that still works is ES File Explorer to move files to SD card. But not the greatest solution. Hopefully Samsung will put out a fix if we make some noise.

Dude, just root the phone, install Busybox and use Foldermount to move apps to the sdcard
These threads are funny. Everyone *****es about Samsung's apps, framework, overlay and customizations so they release a phone that's as AOSP as possible. Then people ***** about not having access to Samsung's customizations. OP, Google's adamantly against external storage which is why Nexus devices don't have it. Be lucky the SGS4 GE supports it at all which is a customization to AOSP in itself. There are two SGS4s - pick the one that works for you. Expecting Samsung to continue to add their own features to a phone intentionally kept as "pure" as possible is a bit nuts and goes against why GE edition phones exist in the first place. The post above this one is the answer to your problem. Not spamming Samsung.

Uhhh, you're a little misinformed. We can't write to the SD card at all. Not just apps2sd is broken. I don't care about that. I can't create a folder on my SD Card with Solid Explorer without rooting my phone and modifying a system file. That's bull****. The phone is advertised on play.google.com as supporting expandable storage. They need to fix it.

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2013/08/ga...-android-4-3-breaks-sd-card-writing-for-apps/
Since it's an identified problem that's been picked up by the media you can pretty much assume a fix is in the works. Relying on low-paid third party call center agents as a source of info ("Samsung's not aware of the problem") isn't really that wise as they are typically the last to know about both problems and their solutions.
Hope it gets fixed soon.
I called this morning to the mobile services number. They did ask me for my IMEI number he repeated the issue back to me and he understood it as a SD writing issue not apps to SD issue.
I also requested he put in to Google "4.3 issue with s4 Google edition" and they will see several post explaining the issue.
He said he would forward to technical support.
To those with a GT-I9505G please call even if you do not care about the issue.
Although ES file explorer work to move pics and video to the Ext SD card, this should be fixed for this model since it is about the only pure android OS with an SD card.

You people expect an answer by calling samsung? Seriously?
Let me tell you this- they don't care. They got away with your $$$ and don't give a rat's poop.
They release updates and put what they want on it when they feel like it (or a court order forces them).
That's why XDA exists so we won't have to be so reliant on samsung regarding features that we want.

They apparently listened on the low available space on the S4 and brought back apps to SD for the S4 in a fairly quick update. In the case of the S4 Google Edition, we are taking about one line of code in the platform.xml file. I do expect them to issue a fix. Why wouldn't they if it is a legitimate bug? If not, they may as well stop making the S4 GPe because nobody will buy them if this is not fixed. Many people that buy the s4 GPe want their apps to have write access the ext SD card.
The Samsung email address page is a little tricky to find here it is

I have a recently purchased Samsung s4 google edition i9505G from the Google play store. After the 4.3 android update my apps have lost the ability to write to the sd card. This has been documented in many articles on the web.
I have talked to Google and they told me a fix for this would be your responsibility.

Phone memory saying full when it shouldn't be

I have a cheap android phone Landvo V11 which has been fine till recently. It has a 16gb internal memory and also an sd card which I use for everthing like vids and downloads. Just recently my phone has been getting so slow and the internal memory is saying its almost full bar a few mb. When I browse the phone on my linux PC all the folders in the phone memory only add up to 233mb but still when I check the properties of the whole thing its saying its full. I even had to delete some apps to update others. I'm guessing its some sort of malware but I just cant see whats taking up the space. Can anyone shed any light on this or tell me a way to see the hidden space that I'm missing. thanks
Android considers any space less than 1GB as full or nearly full storage.

Are you using a file manager app that has a recycle bin? If so, maybe the recycle bin is full.
Use an app that has a cleaner function to wipe unneeded data. Use an app that has a file scanner, it should list everything, where it is stored and how big the files are.

Ive tried using standard file browser, ES file explorer and also tried connecting to my linux machine. Can you give me the names of the apps with file scanner cos I dont know what to get. Also is there maybe a decent app that I could use on my linux machine that may do the trick. There should be over 10gb of space free. Whatever is happening, its using a hell of a lot of space but hiding its self well.
1.Try installing rar app.its best file manager after that see files with (.)dot
And delete them (you can find them inside the folders too
2.try to enter in recovery mode by using key combination method and wipe cache and reboot may solve ur problem
3.if this also dsnt wrk backup ur important data in a pc and after that FACTORY RESET the phn.problem gone
And dont forget to press thanx

After looking up the device it seems some have found that it doesn't have the storage it is advertised to have. Like a knock off flash drive that fakes its storage amount.

Which is already understood. Not what I was talking about at all. As his device is only showing 2gb of storage which has happened with this oem.
People really need to stop buying cheap Chinese devices and expecting them to be telling the truth about hardware.

Which means nothing in this conversation. Its not even the same device and you have zero understanding about what product binning is. Might want to do some research and stop using BS posts to raise your post count. You do know those numbers dont mean anything right? Even the mods have something that blocks out post count as well as thanks count.

He was saying that the device doesn't actually have the amount of internal storage as the manufacturer claims it has.
In other words, the manufacturer "claims" the device has 16GB internal storage, but the device actually has considerably less than that.
