Isn't it awesome how customizable Android is compared to anything else out there? Many elements of the platform can be tweaked, ranging from under-the-hood performance adjustments to visual and user interface modifications. This post is all about the latter, bringing you 10 apps that will replace the stock lock screen on your Android smartphone. Why would anyone want to do that? Well, keep in mind that not all Android smarthphones are made equal. Many come with a lock screen provided by the manufacturer, and while some custom lock screens work fine, others aren't all that great. But these third-party lock screen replacement are among the best ones available in the Play Store. Chances are that if you aren't happy with the lock screen on your Android smartphone, a better alternative will be listed below.
1. Active Lockscreen
Active Lockscreen provides quick, single-swipe access to essential apps, such as the dialer, the camera, and the email client. There are shortcuts to your recently contacted numbers and recently used applications as well. The app offers multiple themes to choose from.

2. Go Locker
From the same fine folks who brought us Go Launcher comes Go Locker – a lock screen replacement with shortcuts to the call log, the messaging app, and media player quick controls. Current weather conditions can be displayed as well. Security protection with pin or pattern is supported. Additional themes for Go Locker are available from the Play Store.

3. MagicLocker
We bring you one of the most downloaded lock screen replacement app on Google Play, with support for themes, shortcuts, image customization, and what not. Your security pattern should also work even with MagicLocker enabled.
Download:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.lockscreen.magiclocker
4. Holo Locker
Holo Locker is a lock screen replacement with a minimalist, stock-ish look and feel. But at the same time, it does have several adjustments that you can tweak. For example, the status bar can be hidden or disabled while the text color can be changed. The paid version of the app has a counter for your unread emails and text messages and would let you change the background image as well.

5. MXLock
And here's one more lock screen replacement app offering a wide variety of cute and colorful themes to select from. Naturally, it lets you activate the phone, SMS, and Camera apps without unlocking your device.
Download:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neomtel.mxlock
6. WidgetLocker Lockscreen
Can you guess what WidgetLocker Lockscreen offers to stand out? Yup, lock screen widgets. Actually, this Android app supported that before it was even cool. Shortcuts to apps of the user's choice can also be placed there for convenience.
Download:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker
7. Windows 8 Lock Screen
As the name implies, this app is meant to mimic the lock screen found on Windows-based smartphones. It displays the current date and time, along with counters for unread texts and missed calls. The background may be made transparent, in case the user wants to.
8. C Locker
Access your apps quickly with this versatile lock screen. It is functional, good-looking, and its paid version has a number of handy features, such as RSS feed support, listing of Calendar events, reminders and more. The volume rocker can be set to skip or rewind songs playing in the music player instead of just adjusting the volume.
Download:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ccs.lockscreen
9. Sparky
What's cool about Sparky is that it offers a good selection of beautifully drawn lock screens, with shortcuts to frequently used apps and counters for missed events. But although the app will make your lock screen much prettier, it will not work with your pattern lock.

10. Joy Locker
Last but not least, here's a lock screen replacement solution by the Global Animation team. The best thing about it is that there are many themes available from its library , designed by talented artists. The amazing thing is that you can play many funny games to find out the how to unlock your mobile screen.

The widgets are really, really nice, though Tasker can already do the event based homescreen switching. I'd put more emphasis of the look, less on the automation
Contribution made! Hope it leads to something..

Don't know what you mean by "detect" but if you mean actually switch them, the "go home" feature has a page system that works with a select few launchers, alternatively you can simply use different launchers altogether and use the load app feature to load them at different times. The latter is probably better, since then you can truly have different launchers and not be stuck with a single homescreen per "profile" like Chameleon is

Will there ever be a smart-phone version? This looks absolutely stunning and I wouldn't mind chipping in if it was coming for smartphone.
Also seems like you're making good progress. I opened this thread and went to kickstarter, saw 893 backers and 7980 something $, posted this comment, went back 896 backers and 8008$
WOW its already 8018$
Wow, I can't believe how much money this has got in just one day. I think it was at $50 or so when I checked earlier.
added my $10 -- this looks very interesting....can't wait!

Lock screen apps offer an easy way to personalize your Android phone or tablet.
1. Echo Notification Lockscreen
Google Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.doublelabs.androscreen.echo&hl=en
If you're looking for a lightweight app that provides all the essentials right from the get-go, then Echo Notification Lockscreen will likely float your boat. The app displays messages, missed calls and other types of notifications straight from the lock screen, which you can then open by tapping, or dismiss by swiping to the left. Two cool things about the app: you get a camera shortcut to snap some quick photos and it won’t suck your battery dry either. And Echo Notification is also free!
Echo Notification Lockscreen provides you with messages and missed calls on your lock screen.
2. Cover - the smart lock screen
Google Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.coverscreen.cover&hl=en
Cover brings context-based information to the lock screen, meaning the right content and settings at the right time. This is reminiscent of Google Now and for the most part works quite similarly. By entering your home address and workplace, the lock screen will know when to switch between private and work mode. Depending on the situation, it shows matching apps as shortcuts. This works because the launcher is capable of learning and adapts to particular usage patterns. In addition to being able to automatically switch between settings and shortcuts, Cover also offers simplified access to recently used apps by swiping downwards from the top screen border.
Cover is in open beta phase and can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. We already tested the lock screen two months ago and found that even then it made a very good and well-made impression.
Cover offers context-based apps on your Android lock screen to match your habits.
3. Ubuntu Lockscreen
Google Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rotaryheart.ubuntu.lock.screen&hl=en
There had been talks about a mobile operating system from Ubuntu called Ubuntu Touch, but it never really caught on. If you still want at least a tiny hint of Ubuntu on your smartphone, you can install the Ubuntu Lockscreen. It has a ring menu that will display notifications, and by swiping from top to bottom, you’ll see date, time and battery status.
Swiping from right to left presents shortcuts to apps which can be set up by the user individually beforehand. On request, a music player can be displayed on the lock screen, since the security options are currently only a password or PIN. So, even when swiping from left to right, the display will remain unlocked. The Ubuntu Lockscreen can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and is free.
Get a taste of Ubuntu with Ubuntu Lock Screen.
4. UnlockYourBrain - vocabulary and math training
Google Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.unlockyourbrain&hl=en
On average, we’ll look at our smartphones about 80 times a day. Wouldn’t it make sense to combine these almost subconscious compulsions with something meaningful? UnlockYourBrain is a lockscreen alternative made to keep your brain fit by having you solve math problems and do some vocabulary training.
The vocabulary or math exercises loaded onto the lock screen can naturally be skipped in case you get stumped. The potential found in this lock screen is great though. Repetition is the mother of retention and by constantly viewing vocabulary and calculation methods, this will slowly but surely start to sink in, keeping your brain from turning into mush.
UnlockYourBrain is free and ad-supported, available in the Google Play Store. The premium version can be bought as in-app purchases in various packages.
UnlockYourBrain makes you smarter all while unlocking your phone.
5. DashClock widget
Google Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nurik.roman.dashclock&hl=en
The easiest and most popular way to set up a lock screen is with the use of widgets. One of the most popular in this genre is DashClock Widget because it not only supports extensions but is also be extensively customizable. The widget, which is displayed next to the clock, can be a calendar, appointments, unread messages or when using supported apps, the weather for example.
DashClock Widget can be downloaded for free in the Google Play Store. Setting up and searching for matching extensions can be fun but could also take some time to complete thanks to a huge array of extensions to choose from. You can take a look at an overview in the Play Store by simply searching for the term "DashClock".

Lock screen apps offer an easy way to personalize your Android phone or tablet.
1. MagicLocker Main
Google Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.lockscreen.magiclocker&hl=en
Love different themes? Magic Locker Main offers a whole bunch of them, and is a lockscreen we can highly recommend. There are around 3000 various free themes ready to be downloaded for free from the Play Store, so choice isn’t the issue here, though choosing one could be! The app settings allow the user to change time, date and app shortcuts, as well as sound effects. Please note: so that the lockscreen isn’t easily bypassed by pressing on the home button, you might need to resort to a double lockscreen, which the developer explains in the FAQs on the Play Store.
There are over 3000 themes that you can download and use to personalize your lockscreen.
2. Locker Master
Google Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qiigame.flocker.global&hl=en
Again, Locker Master is a master of themes, even offering unique ones like ukulele, pumpgun or cupcake. It can be unlocked with patterns or various actions, shortcuts can be added as well as weather animation, quick settings and many other useful tools. There are more options that can be used but only when you have an alternate launcher installed. Music players widgets look great on this lockscreen and you can even get notifications from your social networks.
There are a bunch of different themes and unlocking options.
3. MixLocker
Google Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simico.creativelocker&hl=en
A super fresh lockscreen alternative on the app market is MixLocker. Next to tons of themes, you’ll also get entire wallpaper packages to keep your lockscreen interesting. The menu is super intuitive, however under the tools section, you will only find the flashlight and barcode scanner lockscreen shortcuts for now. In comparison to other apps, it also lacks the possibility to set up the lockscreen as desired. It does however let you use your own pictures on the lockscreen, but after a while you might notice that the picture slideshow uses up a lot of battery.
This app offers great designs.
4. Go locker
Google Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jiubang.goscreenlock&hl=en
Go Locker offers quite the big lockscreen package with a bunch of great themes, whether it be 3D animations, iPhone or Windows styles, to name a few. There are a lot of possibilities, but not all are free, which you will discover after installing the app. In the settings, you will further options, like lockscreen pattern or a widget screen setup. When unlocking the screen, I did notice that it was slightly laggy. But in total, Go Locker will fulfill all of your customization needs and offer you a very intuitive settings menu.
Lots of the themes can be installed from the Google Play Store.
5. WidgetLocker Lockscreen
Google Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker&hl=en
WidgetLocker Lockscreen can (almost) do it all! After a slight learning curve, the lockscreen alternative offers a ton of options, like color, widgets, shortcuts for apps and other functions, which can be added to the lockscreen. The varied settings menu also lets you set up the unlocking method and sounds. You are even able to backup your prefered settings option right on the app. There is only one setback: WidgetLocker Lockscreen costs 2.99 USD.
To figure out the various setting's options here, you will need some time, but after that it's smooth sailing.

Go Locker is one of the best ever lock screen app I use, Its fulfill all of your requirement and one of the best advantages of this app is takes a selfie of a person who tries to unlock your phone by entering wrong Password/ Pin/ Pattern.

and how do you backup/transfer your apps to a new device?
normally, you just copy the app folder to a new device.
what happens if an app is protected with this service?

Hi, I used LockdownPro to lockdown all apps on a Samsung Galaxy a couple of years ago.
I ended up not using the tablet and it's sat in a box for two years!.
When I turned it on today, I could not remember the Lockdown Pro passcode.
I can't access emails, settings or anything to try to amend.
Is there anything I can do?
Thanks for your help,
