Well, I'm looking for a phone in the 300-400 dollar range that is good for customization. I mean I don't want to have to do any ridiculous things to unlock the bootloader, and the phone should have already have a somewhat decent development (in Xda for ROMs, etc.). Basically I have a Galaxy S4 but the bootloader is locked and I don't feel like using safestrap so I just want to buy a new phone, but I want to make sure I can customize it without any locked bootloaders or flashing restrictions.
HeySwiftLeeO,
If you are looking for an easy phone to customize with the ability to get a good development community and a token to unlock the bootloader, you need to look at all the HTC phones that HTC lists as dev devices. HTC has a great forum on their dev site and they really are quite good about getting back to you if you have specific question. I have modded several HTC devices including the Vivid and the One and each time was a great experience. And if you are looking to mod the hardware as well HTC'S architecture is a real pleasure to work with and there are a ton of 3rd party Chinese manufacturers that make the mods cheaper and less expensive than trying to do similar things with Samsung or Sony where the parts are twice as expensive. I would recommend starting with either the One X or the One because they used those as dev devices and there is a ton of support with both HTC and other developers on the forums. There is also a big community on these forums for those phones and there are plenty of ROMs to choose from which always helps when you are looking for a ROM that best suits your needs.
I hope this helps you and if you have any questions feel free to ask.
Without doubt, a Nexus device

Hello all,
With how big the buzz is on the new Moto Droid, and how awesome the reviews have been on it so far, I'm hoping the modding community would attack it like a wolf on a sheep.
The question of the day though, is where will the modders conglomerate? It's not a HTC phone, so of course it wouldn't be on XDA (though I wish it was, because the android community here is first class awesome).
Why not create a sister site of XDA called droid-developers.com (or any name really, i wrote this because android-developers.com is taken). We could move all of the android forums and posts over to the sister site (which would definitely save bandwidth here on XDA), and that way the devs can have a one stop area for all android development, not just HTC phones. They could then just create new forums for other phones, like the liquid a1, motorola droid, samsung galaxy, etc..
If we have different sites for different manufacturers, the dev and mod community will be broken apart on different sites, whereas they could all be centrally located on one site.
Having all the android devs in one location not only helps form a community, but it also makes it a one stop location for everything android modding and developing. Others have tried doing so, but each attempt failed because there was no backing. If XDA made the site, it would have the backing of XDA, and with them moving all the current android forums over to the new site, it would be instant 100% backing, as that is where the devs would go for their current projects that are already posted, and any new projects.
As it stands now, there is a different forum for dream/magic, yet a lot of the posts get double posted in each because they are applicable to each. when someone is working on an application, do they choose to put it in the Dream section, Magic section, or Hero section? With it's own complete forum, there could be a general app section, etc..
Lets use an example. The Samsung Galaxy. It was the second android phone released. It's a great phone, but because it's not made by HTC, and therefore has no place on XDA, there is no modding community for it at all. A great device (and really the only one with a good amount of internal storage) has no hopes for the modding future because there is no central location for devs to conglomerate. If it was made by HTC, it would have flourished in the modding community simply because it could be discussed and worked on here at XDA.
The main thing, is they're modding Android, not the specific device. Sure each device has it's own quirks, but Android as a whole is what the topic is about. Why limit it to just HTC phones?
So please, if you agree that this will help the android community, vote in the poll, and voice your opinion by posting in this thread.
Well, as I find the proposal fair enough I've voted yes, but I'm not at all convinced about that domain.
If you intend to move devs from this site (which is well known in the android scene) to a new one, and you use as a reason that this was htc specific, you can't possibly try to name the new site droid-developers in direct reference to a motorola phone.
it wasn't used for a motorola reference. android-developers.com is already taken, as is android-devs.com.
If you have any other suggestions for domain names please post them.
Edit: fixed the first post to reflect what i stated here about the name
Are the mods here not going to create a section for this phone?
There will be no section for The Droid, Galaxy, Cliq, Liquid A1, etc.. because they are not HTC phones. XDA is for HTC phones only.

Lol, it's the origins of XDA. Look at all the phones listed on the forum. They're all HTC phones. XDA is another name for an older htc phone. This site was made and is used only for HTC phones.

Because the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 was made by HTC.
How about making an Android section on this forum that has every Android device, HTC or not? Still under the XDA-Developers.com domain though.

That wouldn't work also, as it would make the main site very clustered. the current per phone forum layout is great, and I would hope the new site would maintain the same layout. Each phone definitely needs it's own forum for hardware hacks (like rooting, SPL's, custom ROM's, etc..) but with all Android devices in one place, it's easier for the community to discuss, mod, etc.. from device to device.
you got another yes here. i would like to see all android being supported.
I too would like to see all Android supported. Especially seeings how a lot of the development will apply to most devices.
I personally hope for a new site to offload some traffic. With android coming to more carriers there is bound to be much heavier traffic.
XDA has been invaluable to me since I got my titan a few years back.
As I have been considering the DROID as an upgrade, I would feel much better about that choice knowing it had a great community to support it despite not being an HTC device.
The same could apply to Windows Mobile though. There are great WinMo devices that aren't supported by the xda-dev's. They can only do so much.
I ststed this in another thread. ModMyMoto will have a section for Droid and Cliq. As far as the others Im sure a site such as PPCGeeks will have the other devices covered.
But I wouldnt be chosing a phone based on the presence of a forum. There will always be someone modding a device if it exists, and finding info is easy enough with google.
If all the devices were located on the same forum, you would have all kinds of tardos flashing files to incorrect devices.
If youve been on XDA for a while you know that these conversations come and go. XDA does their thing, they are the big dogs on the block so its not a big deal if it takes another site to fill in the gaps that XDA cant cover.
I post most of my work on alldroid.org because I would like to use that site for software related things and then use XDA for hardware related things for my G1. I think once more non-HTC phones hit the stores there will be a big influx of people looking for a site to mod on and I dont think XDA will be able to support it unless they dramatically change their ways.
Was going through my past subscriptions and I came upon this thread. Oh how the tides have changed
Ahhh this brings back so many memories. It's great to see how much XDA has progressed over the years!
With source dropping for the dhd and how easy interoperability between our phones is do we need 2 different forums? Seems it would be easier on you guys if things merged.

I agree. Now that the source is out it would make sense.

it would be much easier for the DEVS which is more important. they wouldnt have to maintain 2 different threads for the same ROM, Theme or Kernel as well..
Very good point.

so how do we initiate this or would the Mods even entertain this idea at this point since both forums have been established..
I suggest we work with the mods on this. I'll report my own thread to get some eyes on it.

sounds like a plan..
yes please merge us!
I agree with this. There's a lot of threads I've seen today that are directing you to the DHD forum for further information/troubleshooting - why not make them the same rather than having to post everything twice, or making devs/users have to jump back and forth?
I have to disagree. I prefer the forums seperate.
I could care less what the people in Europe are doing with their Desire HDs. The Inspire is a US phone on AT&T. It has a seperate identity.
Keep in mind even though they are pretty much the same phone, they run on different networks, have different radio software, and are supported by different cell providers. People's experiences will be different than their European counterparts.
Please keep them seperate.
you do realize that almost everything in our forums are from the europe DHD forums right??? so why have 2?

I think 2 just to keep it simpler. so that the threads arent filled with issues from the inspire in the desire thread and desire in an inspire thread.
if the dev part is merged to make it better for them is one thing, but you still need att specific sub forum for all the posts that are att specific.
The Dev secton right now is NOT the biggest part of this device forum, all the att specific issues are...

A European ROM flashed with the kernel just released by apache14 works out of the box with no further user tweaking.
I have a feeling that all the rom chefs of Europe will be building their own kernels based on the source that dropped yesterday which is universal, and includes the variations to the American and Canadian DHDs.
I agree that a sub forum may be needed in General but not Dev.
yeah I'm not seeing anything that makes this device any different from the DHD device. The DHD forum isn't limited to 1 single carrier so i'm still not seeing your point of keeping it separate...
worst case scenario look at how the Motorola Milestone and Verizon Drioid forum is laid out.. maybe something similar
and besides the DEV section will start becoming the biggest part of our forums now that ROMS and Kernels are out
Also keep in mind that there are a lot of people who like me have no intention of rooting or modding their phone. So the DEV section is useless to people like me.
I used to jailbreak my iPhone for years, but got bored doing it. The only reason I flashed a custom ROM on my Captivate was cause you had to, being that the stock 2.1 was terrible.
Currently outside of the fact that the back speaker is terrible on the Inspire, I am completely happy the way the phone is. I don't feel I need to flash custom ROMs to get a phone to work the way it should. The Inspire currently works just dandy.
So don't assume everyone is into modding.
there is always the search function. That always helps. Besides where as I know that not ALL people root and load custom roms there are a good portion that do and since that is what the majority do on XDA (D=Developers) then I don't know how relevant your argument is on that one.
did you look at the motorola forum I previously mentioned to you?

Why are you using this forum then? No offense but if I wasn't in to modding my device I would use another less development oriented one like androidforum or something. Most people on xda DEVELOPERS are into development. But I am with you on keeping the dhd and inspire forums separate or at least the dev sections and my only logic on that is because of the sound issues but if the source being released fixes this than I guess there's no point. As far as general I could care less.......

Although I am not really into custom ROMs, I still think this is a great forum to hang out. Plus I think you get a more mature crowd on here who are a bit more techie oriented.
I also read on Androidforums.com and like how they have a separate section for every phone. I think it works, but then again on there I don't think you get the same kind of conversations as you get on here.
As far as what Gunny said, I don't really see a lot of DesireHD stuff in the general section of the Inspire forum. I am sure you do in the DEV section, but so far almost all the threads I see in here are all about the Inspire.
i would be curious to add a poll to this thread.. so far I am only seeing 1 maybe 2 people that may not agree. I'd love to see what general consensus states...
I am about to buy a new phone. So my questions are as follows:
1.) What Carrier has the most active phone being worked on by developers?
2.) Which phones (regardless of carrier) have the most devoted developers working on them?
Note: Basically i want to be able to be a flash addict and try new ROMS with new features made by decent developers (Although beginner or pro, all programmers deserve respect).
What are your guys opinions on the best Android phone to get? My carrier currently is MetroPCS but i might move to T-Mobile. I do not like big screens. The biggest screen i could probably deal with is the Galaxy S5 and that's because i use the hip clip.
I am leaning towards the Galaxy S5 (Upgrade from the S4).... The Sickness makes AWESOME ROMS for the M919 and i'm looking for a new phone with a similar caliber developer that's just as devoted as him.
ANY opinions or direct answers to my questions are greatly appreciated.
Another aspect the phone should have is that it has a great kernel... I LOVE the KT Kernel. Stability and profiles make it so easy to overclock/underclock.
Thanks in advance!!

Hey guys, im currently using an HTC One m8, but im thinking about getting a secondary device to thinker with, i want to spend around $200 USD
i mainly be using this phone to try out roms and use my secondary sim card, i was looking to get a Xiaomi Mi3, but it seems to be a little more expensive here in the US, i was also considering getting a used Nexus 4, what do you guys think would be a good option?
I'm using a nexus 4, and a used nexus 4 would be great for tinkering, it is a fantastic device. Lots of ROMS and great support from the developer community.

Hi All,
I've had an HTC one (m7) for about 18 months, but I'm increasingly favouring the new S6 Edge as my next phone; there are so many great features that I think will be genuinely useful.
Whereas I had a good grasp on the custom ROM scene with HTC phones, I'm not so sure what the state of play is with Samsung phones. I've read somewhere that Samsung's choice to use their own processor in the S6 will make it tough to access internals that are required for sucessful rooting.
Can anyone on this forum tell me if the above is true? Will I be able to customise and tweak the S6 in the same way that I'm used to on my m7? Is Touchwiz removable, or at least replaceable by another Launcher such as Apex or Nova? And would an alternate Launcher still have access to features like apps in separate windows, quick launch camera, etc.
I realise that I could learn most of this by googling here and on other forums, but it would be great if one of the regular contributors to this forum could give me an overview.
Thanks for your help,
Miles.
I think htc m9 will be for that

Hi Miles,
Unfortunately there is no one I know with an HTC phone.
I'll ask you a question and see if this would be recommended by you at all? The HTC M9.
