I would re-flash the recovery and the cache.img. If that doesn't work, try another recovery like TWRP or CWM and see if it works there. If that doesn't work, try flashing the factory image.

from my experience the nexus 5 dosen't support mounting via recovery..

Not to a PC, no, but he means mount the /data partition so the phone can write to it.

I am also using philz recovery and just got this error also. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

fastboot flash cache cache.img - from the stock rom. You should know this before rooting

So you dont want me to help? I give you the answer and you throw it back in my face?
...and yes, you should know how to fastboot flash any partition before rooting. Its in the "read this before rooting" thread stuck at the top of this forum. If someone tells you to flash a cache.img - you should no what that means. If someone then tells you how to do it, you shouldn't come back with ridiculous comments.
Some people aren't worth helping. You'll receive nothing from me again.
No I wouldn't have replied in the s4 forum. I had an s3 and I would have replied like this too. You're supposed to arm yourself with basic knowledge before rooting. Everyone here is sick and tired of helping people who can't be bothered reading sticky threads.

Are you wiping data when you flash the rom?
If you don't have any important stuff on your phone, I would just flash the factory images and start over with the rom process.

When you flash the ROM it also flashes the kernel that comes with it.
So if you are using Mahdi ROM then everything is ok but if you try a different ROM you get the error constantly?
using the ClockworkMod recovery.
If you receive issues on flashing, double check your download. If nothing, I suggest using the ClockworkMod recovery.

The type of recovery you use will have no bearing on it, hundreds of people on here use twrp and cwm.
All I can suggest and it was suggested before is to wipe your phone completely and start over again. Something went wrong, clearly.

[Q] I want to root, but...is it worth it?

I apologize for asking this question since there are several variants of it all over this forum. I just haven't quite found the answers I'm looking for.*
When you read this and respond, please keep in mind that I am a major noobie. Pretend you're talking to a child. **
My reason for wanting to root is to take advantage of certain apps like BoostVolume, AdAway and TitaniumBackup (can't remember the others I wanted...).
At this time, I don't want to install a custom ROM. I'm just not ready to take that chance.*
So...
Can I get some of the benefits of rooting without installing a custom recovery?*
* * *If so, what will I gain and lose by doing this?*
* * *Will I still get OTA updates? *Will an OTA update remove root access?
For some reason, I'm really stuck on continuing to get OTA updates...I guess I don't want the responsibility.
There are good threads for "major noobies" to read.
Start with the "read before you root" thread at the top of this q&a forum. Also, search general for "ota help-desk". There is a rooting thread stuck at the top of general too.
Please read those then let is know if you have any questions

Yeah, I'm not sure why I'm leery of flashing the updates. I guess I have to take it slowly and start with rooting (without custom recovery).
I don't think you can root without custom recovery. Don't worry about it. If anything goes wrong, which is very very unlikely, you can restore to stock in fastboot.
Sent from my Nexus 5
If you are going to root, I really suggest getting s custom recovery too. Then you can make a nandroid backup and generally undo most problems that may happen by returning to that "snapshot" of the os.
But using fast boot to restore a factory image will fix these too, with stock recovery, but will erase data.

I had planned on using CF-auto-root, so I didn't need a custom recovery. I had based that on my fear of changing too much, but I also saw this, which I'm probably misunderstanding?
From Chainfire: (I am personally moving away from custom kernels and recoveries, for various reasons).
The more I think I understand, the more confused I get. It seems I'm getting lost in the terminology. To completely understand my options, I need to back up and go through the definitions and CLI commands again. A lot of what you're saying is going over my head. I think I've read too much and some information just isn't sticking.
