[Q] Problem with File transfers to SD Card - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I received my Note Pro (WiFi) on Wednesday.
It really is superb and I am loving it, however I have a really irritating problem.
When connecting to my PC and attempting to transfer content to the Micro SDCard (SanDisk 64gb - mainly video files) the connection frequently drops causing the transfer to fail. Sometimes it is fine for a file or two, sometimes it fails on the first file. The PC then cannot see any content on the card untl I reboot the Note Pro.
Any ideas?
Please note:
1) I have tried two other cards, another 64gb SanDisk and a 32gb Samsung but this happens with all transfers (suggesting its not the card)
2) All cards work fine in my Note 3 and Note 10.1 2014
3) Transfers to the internal memory are fast (on USB 3.0) and work fine (suggesting it is the Note Pro)
4) Transfers from my PC to my Note 3 and Note 10.1 2014 work fine (suggesting it is not the PC)
5) The problem occurs with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 transfers, and with various cables to any PC port
6) My MX Player Pro app cannot delete files from the SDCard but can see them
7) Some apps (e.g. My Drives) cannot see the SD Card but the stock apps can all see the content and delete/modify files
8) I have tried reformatting the cards both in the Note Pro and the PC but that makes no difference
9) I have used Kies 3 to re-install the USB drivers but this didn't cure the problem
As my primary use for the tablet is watching pre-downloaded video on my commute to work this is very frustrating.
It might be that this is a firmware problem that gets sorted as the device becomes more available and I am working round it atm.
Any help would be appreciated.

Are you able to check out logcat to see if it is spitting out any errors?

Logcat
I have repeated the process a few times but cannot see anything obvious in logcat. There are certainly no errors in the log immediately after the event.
logcat.zip file attached.

I'm having a similar issue when transferring a 1.3g video file from my notepro storage to the micro sd card.... It starts to transfer the data and then fails.
It's like the sd card had been removed as when I look at the sd card using a file Explorer it is accessible but all info on the card isn't present. If I unmount the sd card I can't remount it, I have to manually remove the card and put it back in to see any info on the card!!!!
Definitely a faulty sd card reader or a bug in the firmware!!!

Well at least I know I am not going mad :laugh:716
Samsung will need to sort this out quickly with the impending release of the Note Pro in the US on 13th Feb.
I hope it can be fixed with a firmware update.

Yes I know - whats the point of having a micro sd card slot if you cant write to the card!!! I know I can do this on my S4 and Note 2 and I used to be able to do this on my old 10.1 - all are rooted but that shouldn't make a difference!!!!

Just got off the phone to samsung support..... its definitely a problem with how 4.4 is implemented on the NotePro, even though the Samsung Support Guy did everything he could to blame my SD Card.
Hopefully a firmware update will fix it a little down the line.... so for the time being my micro sd card adapter is going to get a lot of use!!!!

Looking around the net and looking at Note 3 and Note 10.1 (2014) forums there have been lots of problems when people upgrade to 4.4 and aren't rooted.
It looks like the permissions are set to disable write access to the ext micro card, if your rooted it's is easy to change these, if your not it can't be changed.
Samsung will need to change these permissions if they see fit and release an update. I have sent an email to Samsung support advising them of the issue and also advising them how to fix it..... Just have to wait and see!!!

Maybe a problem with SELinux permissions on the card? I see a lot of errors with Knox/SELinux from that logcat.

As a temporary workaround you should be able to transfer files to the sdcard using an external reader. I should be getting mine soon so I can test this out.

Is this an issue with all note pro 12.2s? just returned one and ordered another for this issue... Was able to transfer to main memory over WiFi then copy to SD card but transferring to the SD card over WiFi was a 50/50 chance if even that...

I was expecting a lot more reports once the tablet launched in the US but haven't seen too many so far.
It's a real pain but I can live with it. I'm waiting it out for firmware fix for now, but if that doesn't come then it's going back. There is time yet and I love the screen size too much to let it go...
Let us know how you get on with the replacement.

Same issue with replacement and replacement card... Can not transfer files using WiFi to SD card... Can transfer to device then copy to SD card, hook up usb cable and transfer to SD card or transfer through a card reader... hopefully Samsung will get on this quick like... lol ya that made me laugh too

Exactly the same problem here with mine (UK). Hopefully Samsung will hop on it asap. Glad I don't just have a duff Note. Thanks! :good:

Is this just a problem with the UK version? I think I read somewhere the US version was coming shipped with an update that the UK version would soon be getting?.. If it makes anyone feel better, my US model has no problems at all syncing to the external over wifi..
The only problem I did run into was the changes of writing to the external sd with 4.4 Normally I would just make a folder anywhere on the external and sync my comics to it in the past.. but now, I had to copy my reader app to the external and then make the folder within that one in order to copy my books to it..

It looks like this is a widespread issue caused by Android 4.4. Since Samsung is running KitKat on these out of the gate, it seems to be a pretty widespread issue. From https://plus.google.com/+TodLiebeck/posts/gjnmuaDM8sn:
KitKat will make your SD Card completely useless: per the Android API specification, apps can no longer write files to your SD card. And Samsung is following it.
This only applies to dual-storage devices, i.e., devices with a user-writable internal flash storage AND a removable SD card.
From http://source.android.com/devices/tech/storage/index.html:
"The WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission must only grant write access to the primary external storage on a device. Apps must not be allowed to write to secondary external storage devices, except in their package-specific directories as allowed by synthesized permissions."
If your device has user-accessible internal flash storage, your SD Card is a "secondary external storage device".
What this means is that with KitKat, applications will no longer be able create, modify, or remove files and folders on your external SD card. As a for-instance, you can no longer use a file manager to copy files from your computer to the SD card over a network. This ability, which has existed since the beginning of Android, has been taken away.
The only stated reason for this removal of functionality is that, "Restricting writes in this way ensures the system can clean up files when applications are uninstalled." I do not pretend to understand this logic. Apps are still allowed to write in arbitrary directories on the primary storage (with the appropriate permission), but are denied the same access to external storage.
Samsung has implemented this feature with their KitKat OTA updates. Note3 users are now complaining that FX File Explorer can no longer write to their external SD cards. There are solutions to this problem for users with root access. Users without root access appear to be screwed.
I'm not quite certain how Google intends for you to place files on your SD card. Perhaps you have to use proprietary Google apps that contain permissions unavailable to the rest of the developer world. Perhaps you're supposed to put everything on the cloud and pay carrier data fees to get it there. Perhaps you're supposed to use some kind of WIRE to attach your WIRELESS device to your computer and have the computer do that work for you.
In my opinion this is a horrible misstep by Google and the Android Open Source Project. Functionality has been removed without reason, to the severe detriment of users and developers alike.
I apologize for not bringing this to everyone's attention when KitKat 4.4 was released, but it was not mentioned in the Android 4.4 changes document: http://developer.android.com/about/versions/android-4.4.html. It's only mentioned in the article on source.android.com. I was only made aware of its existence from user reports as a result of Samsung implementing this change in its KitKat OTA updates.

Now, there is a fix for this, but you need a rooted device.

Can it be that this is the culprit:

Tried this on my GalaxyNote Pro, and the fix for the N9005 as described is working . Titanium backups and Appmonster backups are now stored on the ExtSDcard.

Hello All,
Since kitkat 4.4.2 was released on the Galaxy Note 3, many users were unable to write files to the External SD Card. Below is a simple fix for rooted users on the Galaxy Note 3 N9005 ( International Snapdragon Variant).
**Please be advised that I have only tested this on my personal N9005. However, you are free to test it on your own devices at your own risk!! **
1. Using a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /system/etc/permissions
2. Edit platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add an additional group definition for this permission...
4. Save the changes to the file.
5. Restart.
Attached is a copy of my platform.xml.

Is not working for me. Lost ability to see my sd card and all apps where failing. ALOT!! Not exactly sure what the issue was. I had to reflash using odin twice to fix the issue. Also before reflashing it seems I lost the ability to write to either sd card. Internal or external.

Got it to work o the second try. Make sure the format is exactly the same when you add the new line or things go crazy

[Q] SD Card Issues

I have a 32GB SD card (18GB currently available) installed in my Atrix 2, and periodically run into issues where the phone thinks it's full. A specific example - I periodically receive error messages from Swiftkey 3 stating it's unable to download language packs. The message will occasionally repeat itself (unknown interval). The only thing I have found to fix this (and other issues where I'm told there isn't enough storage space) is to unmount and remount the SD card.
Does anyone know what might be causing this issue or have recommendations on how I can fix it? I really appreciate any help you can provide.

What class sdcard are you using? There have been noted issues with sdcards that are higher in class than say, class 6-10. I am running a class 4 32GB card. No issues at all to report with this class sdcard. Some users are able to run higher class sdcards with their phones, while others are not. You could have some corrupted data on your sdcard that is causing the problem as well...

My SD card is class 10. What would you recommend to get rid of a potentially corrupted file? I don't want to lose everything on the card. If I back up the files I want to keep on my PC & format the card, will the system reinstall any files it needs? Or will I have to reflash the ROM?

That class 10 card is likely the culprit. You might try a lower class 4 card or so and see if the problem persists. As for backing up your sdcard's files to your computer, just plug in your USB cable and select "USB Mass Storage" mode. This will allow you to open folder to view files, where you can copy over everything from the sdcard to the computer. Then, you can do as I mentioned by (unplugging first from computer) unmounting your sdcard and format it from within the phone. If you reboot after wiping all contents on sdcard, there is nothing to worry about, as the device will create any needed file folders upon rebooting.

To avoid errors use class 4 memory card and if the problem still persist perform a full format of your memory card.

new SD card: now error: Application not installed on your phone"

Just moved from a 8 GB to a 32GB card. And cannot use it...
First I unmounted the old SD card on the phone, and put in the new, unformatted 32GB. I then choose to format it in the phone. Its a Galaxy S GT-9003i with firmware I9003XXKPN v2.3.5
It formated fine. Then I unmounted the new card, plonked in the old card and connected the phone in USB mode to the Macbook. I also connected the newly formatted SD card via a card reader, and it promptly showed up, with the correct free space (although there was a directory on it already called LOST.DIR)
I then copied all apps from the phones 8GB SD to the 32GB card, using the laptop (drag and drop). This also went fine and without a glitch. I then shut down the phone, swapped out the SD cards and booted the phone on again. As expected, it went to do the usual Scanning USB memory. It completed. The space appears to be taken up, but all apps that are on that USB are inaccesible. Their icons grey Androids with a small SD logo in the bottom right corner.
All other apps (the ones on the phone) work fine. The SD card can be used to copy files to on the computer and to take pictures...
Phone is not rooted.
PLease help, if you have a solution to this...

So, I cannot even find the app2sd app under My Apps on the Google Play store... weird. Its also not listing under Manage Applications. Would this really be the cause of the problem!?
Anyone else have any ideas, why the phone cannot load the apps copied from the other SD card...!?!
First of all u have to move all apps from the old sd card to the phone. Or while inserting ur new sd, the apps you moved to your old sd will not work

Thanks, but I canot make sense of this. Firstly all apps on the old SD card will never fit onto the phone (8GB, vs 2GB space), and secondly elsewhere online they always talk about copying files to the new card and then inserting that instead of the old one....
mmmh...!? Whilst I apprecite your post - its not working for me
When apps are moved to the SD card, it isn't entirely moved to the SD card. Only part of it is, that's why when installing apps the space for apps still decreases. Therefore you should use titanium backup or similar backup programs to move the applications.

Thanks,I had a look at titanium backup, but it requires root access (my phone has not been rooted). I really dont think one should need to root their phone to move from a small to a larger SD card without having to re-install all apps from scratch...!?

I have the same problem to, just backed up my old 16gb card to my pc, installed and formatted a new 32gb card in my S4 and copied the data back over and all the apps that are on the sd card are showing up grey.
Ok, after a quick google, i've found that making a clone of the card and then copying the clone to the new card works
you can use HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool to do this (you'll have to google it as I don't have enough posts to post external links)

Thanks! Yeah that works perfectly! (Apparently there are some "secure" folders in the SD card that start with a period, and the contents do not get copied at all. Those hold the apps and data.) However after using HDD-Raw-Copy it will create an exact replica of the smaller SD card on the larger one and the larger one will appear to be small too, so you must resize your partition or you won't gain anything, your new card will be exactly the same as the old one! You can use MiniTool Partition Wizard home edition which is free to do this: partitionwizard.com :good:
I had the same problem but I was able to fix without extra software. Took old card out of my phone and installed both externally via flash readers to my pc and copied files from one to the other. View hidden files is turned on just in case any hidden items is also copied. This work great for me all apps are accessible now. Hope this helpped
Here is the step-by-step solution: http://www.tomsguide.com/forum/id-2545604/move-data-card-samsung-galaxy.html
There are two ways described to do it successfully:
METHOD 1 uses the xcopy (or xcopy32) command in a Cmd Prompt windown on Windows. The /h switch used on the command allows the hidden and system files to be copied!
METHOD 2 uses a straight copy from old SD card to the new SD card (or from old SD card to folder on computer, then from folder on computer to new SD card) using the simple drag and drop on Windows. BUT YOU MUST HAVE WINDOWS EXPLORER CONFIGURED TO SHOW SYSTEM AND HIDDEN FILES!
Just to be clear, the solution to the problem is trivial. You are simply copying ALL the files from one SD card to another. There is absolutely no reason that copying ALL files from one SD card, including the complete file structure, to another SD card should not work. Your phone can't tell that you switched SD cards. It only knows the files and file structure it can see on the SD card and if they are EXACTLY the same as they were before the switch, your phone should work exactly like it did before the switch except now it will see more free storage space on your larger SD card (which was probably your goal in the first place) AND your phone may possibly even run faster by accessing the data much faster if your new SD card is a faster class of storage media.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO ROOT YOUR PHONE OR INSTALL ALL KINDS OF CRAZY APPS ON YOUR PHONE OR SOFTWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER TO DO THIS!!!
BUT, the key is that YOU MUST ALSO COPY ALL THE HIDDEN FILES and there are lots of them on Android! Everytime I hear of someone having a problem with switchinging to a new SD card, it is because they did NOT copy the hidden files OR their SD card was not properly formatted (FAT32) for the phone.

Use 64GB sd card(Fat32)to store photos and video, but it crushed once i plugged into the device. Photos not preview and video showing FILE CAN'T BE PLAYED. Is anyone experience this? I understand the KitKat is not writable on the SD card, but i'm not sure is storage not available as well. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!
Try to reformat the card via your PC, fat32 and try again. If that doesn't work, try to reformat in EXfat

Try everything I have done, no luck. is this mean my SD card is not working or what. I know some people can use up to 128G.
P.S. SD card shows mounted to the device properly and working fine in my other device.

I'm not say that this is going to, or still is an issue, however, in MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE and from what i have read 6-10 months ago or more (maybe they have solved this issue by now i don't know) every time i formated an SD card Via PC it was horrible and the format destroyed the MicroSD card for use with any android device and then even my computer and they where all BRAND NEW. I think it has something to do with the formatting process of the SD cards and the phone because my 32GB cant be recognized anymore by any device but i can format it all day long on my PC and my androids will not see it... I even tried to format it BACK to what android uses to format the cards on ADB and NOTHING ever worked again. MY SUGGESTION IF YOUR USING IT FOR YOUR PHONE DON'T FORMAT YOUR CARD VIA PC. Flash memory is also has a write life. UNLIKE A HDD that you can erase and move files around constantly the more you erase and move files on your SD card the quicker you are going to see the integrity of your card degrade because FLASH Memory can not handle the constant moving and erasing over and over again. so if you want to ave the life of your flash memory and don't want it tos burn out because i guarantee it will, just be mindful of how many times you move and erase. just a tip. if im wrong someone correct me. good luck!
Try to reformat it on the tablet, not the PC. (Settings --> Storage --> Format MicroSD)

[Q] unusual ext sd problem

Hi. I am a new member. I have a Galaxy Note 2 16gb. I upgraded to kit Kat 4.4 and have had a real problems since. I have a 64gb sandisk external SDXC card and can not add, delete or modify the contents in any way either on the device, connected to laptop windows 7 by USB or by putting the card in the laptop. All existing info is readable only. I researched and rooted my phone successfully. I then followed instructions to add the media rw line in write external storage in permissions which was successfully changed. Still no ability to add or modify files on the external card. Specifically, if I delete a file or folder on the ext card it shows as deleted, but after a reboot the file is returned. The same if I add a file to the card, either by transfer on the phone using "My Files" or EX3 File Explorer or by connecting to my laptop, the added file shows up on the ext card and can be opened but disappears after rebooting. I can't find any explanations on the net and am looking for any 128gb help or suggestions. Incidentally I have the same problem with my unrooted Note 10.1 2014 Ed on kit Kat 4.4. Many thanks for any assistance.

It's probably the card is not compatible.

Thanks, but the card worked fine before 4.4.
I am having the same problem on my ASUS me176cx. I have tried to follow every post I can find, but nothing has worked. SDfix, editing the platform.xml file, and tried to confirm folder permissions everywhere I could find. I don't know what else to try and it is starting to get to me. If someone would help me to figure out how to fix this, I would be eternally grateful.

[Q] Dropbox cannot export to SD card

Hi,
Despite its claims, Dropbox will not display my External SD card when I chosoe Export->Save to device.
Yes, I've gone into the Settings and checked "Display Advanced Devices"
I've also made sure my SD card is mounted and writeable. The My Files application is able to move a file from Dropbox to my SD card and the Music player can play music from it too so I know that A)The card is working and B)My device can see and use the card correctly
The problem is inside Dropbox itself but their technical support people are just making me jump through hoops, sending them screenshot after screenshot of other applications saving to the SD card i.e. they think there's something wrong with the device, not their software.
Has anyone else had similar trouble?
Could someone who has managed to get this working take a look at their external SD card contents and see if they have an folder on there for Dropbox anywhere?
Cheers - Brad
By writable, do you mean "The card isn't locked" or "I've rooted and disabled the KitKat external storage security measures"?

I mean the card isn't locked. I know there are Android security measures that restrict things but DropBox say that they can write to an external SD card, presumably in their own allotted area. No rooting should be necessary.

That used to be the case in the first few months, yes. However recent updates to Android made that impossible. Quickpic, ES and VLC run into te same issues. I'm on an older firmware version and they work in exactly that manner, but those on a newer update have found that it no longer works.
That's incorrect.
I just downloaded Smart File Manager and used it to copy a document from internal storage to my sd card. I did this 1 minute ago so it definitely works on the latest android OS version for Note Pro 12.2
When you copy you can only copy to a specific location on the SD card:
/storage/extSdCard/Android/data/com.smartwho.SmartFileManager/files
Any attempt to copy to any other location on the SD card will fail but the folder above is "owned" by Smart File Manager so it is allowed to copy there. Dropbox would have its own location on the SD card too but on my SD card there is no folder that looks like it's owned by DropBox. I suspect that is why it is failing.
