Cannot access Recovery - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hey guys,
My phone died from the dreaded "qhsusb_dload" issue, and since I cannot afford the replacement phone I really want, I bought another AT&T One X.
I had my previous one since March of last year and I have gotten everything done with no issues, including S-OFF, upgrading Firmware to 3.17 to use JB 4.2.2 and trying various Radios and Kernels, so I do have experience.
With this phone, completely stock, I unlocked the Bootloader, and at the top it shows TAMPERED and UNLOCKED. I now have two issues:
1. I cannot get into the Recovery. I flashed it manually from "Fastboot USB", as well as with EZ Toolkit Advanced (Evita) and WinDroidXL Tookit and it showed it was successful with each method, yet when I try to access it, I get the boot screen with the HTC logo for about 3 seconds then it just powers off completely.
I researched and tried TWRP 2.6 as well as CWM from WinDoidXL toolkit. I have also ran the "fastboot erase cache" command after installing the Recovery yet I still have the problem. I installed gapps to accomplish the same thing but I don't wanna use it just yet.
I am asking for help as I am afraid of bricking this phone as well. When it powers off after failing to access the Recovery, it stays off for a while, and Device Manager even shows "qhsusb_dload" I have to hold the power button for a long time (and multiple times in some instances) before it powers on and boots into the OS.
Please help me get this working as I am afraid to try it again with the fear of having it bricked.
I do not have root access (I need recovery to flash t he Super User zip file first, correct?) and my HBoot is 2.14 (can't remember what it was on my last phone). Do any of those play a part in the problem i'm having?
Thanks so much in advance

My phone works fine with stock ATT 4.1.1 that it came with, it's just the Recovery that won't launch, even though it appears to install fine when I flash it with fastboot.
My Bootloader shows:
TAMPERED
UNLOCKED
EVITA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.14.0000
RADIO-24p.32.09.06
OpenDSP-v34.1.0.45.1219

No, but I have tried 2 different versions from here, the one I had on my previous Evita, and I have also used the ones embedded in the WinDroidXL and EZToolkit Advanced (Evita).
I've seen others saying their phone ends up booting normally after selecting Recovery from the Bootloader but mine just powers off when I select it and I can't find a previous thread with this issue.

It's possible your partitions are a bit funky. Running the 3.18 RUU might help.

Would this be what you're referring to? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2390405
And if so, I can try S-OFF even though I don't have root access?
My CID is all 1's
My HBOOT wouldn't cause this prob?

You can disregard all that. I ran the install for TWRP 2.6.3.0 from the EZToolkit Advanced (Evita) then cleared the cache with the automated option in the same Toolkit, which I have tried like 10 times a few hours ago and now it's working... I swear all I did differently was leave the phone idle and plugged in for a while.
I'd still like to get the S-OFF done at this time. When I run "fastboot getvar cid" it returns "cid: 11111111" which means I have SuperCID and I can go through with S-OFF?
Finally, I cannot find a S-OFF guide for HBOOT 2.14 and ATT Firmware 3.18. This is for my HBOOT but not my Firmware http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42631876
I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485865 which states it's for 3.18 Firmware but shows nothing for my HBOOT.
I also found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2540232

S-off isn't specific to firmware, it works on all. Anyway, try Facepalm s-off.

You have no idea how terrified I am right now, modding a phone that is basically the same as the one that got bricked a few days ago.
Thank you for your assistance. I will indeed go with Facepalm as that's the one I used in the past

help!
I have experienced the exact same situation except I have no opinion for back-up in my recovery, so I am just stuck with the boot-loop no matter what I do.
Should I try and root it again?
delete your firmawre from the sd card
on the 1.27 it says locked on the hboot but it doesn't .
try to flash 3.24 firmware i know it works perfect have not tried yet 3.30 ....
you should delete the fw after flashing from root sd card .......
Okay, I will try that. and yes, I know to delete off sd card after flash.

Do you mean you don't have a custom recovery (clockwork or EXT4) installed?
If not you can also flash this either via bootloader in pg58img.zip format, or by installing from market if you achieve rom boot.

I flashed ClockworkMod back on my phone, and tried to do a recovery of the last time I backed up before all this bootlooping occurred. But it's still bootlooping.
Sorry I am so impatient, I just haven't had a phone for two days now and I am anxious to fix this. I also don't have the money to replace this phone either.
What I ended up doing is loading a tmous ruu via bootloader and then flashing my stock backup I made before I rooted and the bootloops stopped. But like I said I had to reroot no issues till this day

I am in deep trouble, my xe has been in boot loop for over a week, I think I may now own a brick...
a brick because I was too ignorant and did not fully (still don't) understand what I was doing. I successfully s-off'd the device and thought I was flying, I then tried to flash something (and for the life of me, I can't find the thread again to say exactly what I flashed) and then....bootlooping like mad.
tried hard reset, wipe dalvic cache, flashing another rom from the sd = epic fail.
Any ideas? someone said I need a revovery image??? but I nver had one, cant go back to a backup I dont have..

Always make a backup when you are flashing.
You could however try downloading one of Mike's (Android Revolution HD) firmware packages. I believe his 3.30 firmware package has custom unlocked HBOOT in it. Next unless you are SuperCID you'll need an RUU (rom) from HTC that supports your phone.
Put the firmware package on the root of your SD from you computer using a card reader. Flash the firmware. Power off and remove the firmware from SD card. Put the RUU on the SD card root.
See if you can boot into the recovery and flash this RUU. Best bet is something like ARHD, I've never had an issue with SuperCID and Mike's rom. Ideally if you get the phone functioning again. Think about SuperCIDing your phone. That way any rom that is supported by your firmware can get you out of trouble.
Another suggestion is that you've updated to rom that doesn't support your firmware. Try flashing to another firmware package, this may well fix your problem. Try one of the later ones (3.30) if that doesn't work. Track down a 3.12 which works with Gingerbread and ICS Roms.

did you have to reroot to get it to work?
because I just installed the correct firmware and attempted to flash a new rom and I am stil in bootloop.
@squash @jaysun - I would move straight to running ruu, this will return you to stock and you can start again.
Just run the ruu from your PC with device attached via USB and in boot loader.
If you are superCID you can run any ruu.
If not, match to your original software, baseband, carrier (if branded) and device.

when in fastboot, my phone says:
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.27.110
RADIO-11.21.3504.13_2
OpenADSP-v02.6.0.2226.00.0104

any idea which of the 53 is the right one? haha.
by the way, thank you so much for helping me out. like I know I am most liekly a pain in the butt, but I am a thankful one!
No worries at all.
So, if you have Sensation xe you need an ruu with "le" in the filename. If it's European, similar - choose European. If your phone was carrier specific e.g. Vodafone IT, pick that one.
That should narrow it to a few candidates.
Now you have to match to your original software and radio version if possible, do you know that?

[Q] Can't update firmware, Unlocked/Tampered S-ON

I want to be able to flash the latest CM10.1 for my AT&T HTC One X. Details about the phone-
Unlocked with HTCDev. Hboot 1.14.0002. Have latest TWRP flashed. Says TAMPERED, UNLOCKED, and S-ON.
I tried a RUU to update the Hboot, but that didn't work.
How can I update the firmware so I can run latest ROMs like CM10.1? I've looked at similar questions, but the answers were for the International Version of the HTC One X.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Ok, so here's the 2nd question. Somehow I managed to wipe whatever ROM I had on here (CleanROM I think), so it doesn't boot to anything. I've tried flashing CleanROM 6 and 3.20.401.1 Odexed, both error out in TWRP.
I'm assuming I've managed to softbrick it?

I might have. What I was trying to do is clean out the phone to sell it, then get it updated, etc. I know in TWRP I ran probably every type of wipe, and I may have run Factory reset from the bootloader. It was a while ago and I set it aside, and now i've come back to it trying to get this phone sorted out.

U need to relock the bootloader
Use command prompt

Yeah, but you need a ROM working to even do the s-off process. So getting a ROM loaded is my main priority at this point. I can get into Bootloader/Fastboot, and I can still get to TWRP. Flashing a ROM from TWRP isn't working, and neither is running the latest RUU from fastboot. I get ERROR 159 when I try to run the latest RUU. So do I need to fastboot oemlock, then try again?
Perhaps running the RUU that was previously on it would work? 2.20, is what firmware was on it last.

It's alright, just a little surprised given the fact that HTC allows you to unlock and such, but their own RUU bricks the phone if in such a state.

They state on their site that after unlocking the bootloader, RUU/OTA could brick you.
If you plan to try warranty with HTC, do not mention that you unlocked. They will charge you 200 straight up no matter what you say.

But was it the 3.18? It applies specifically for the AT&T 3.18 (and for some 3.17 JB RUUs on other carriers, and reported by some folks on this forum).
If you were able to run the 3.18 RUU successfully with SuperCID and S-on, I believe this is the first I've heard of it.

SuperCID as implemented on the AT&T One X is a mod/hack, and therefore not explicitly "allowed" by HTC. They can't really be held responsible for the effects of it.
SuperCID shouldn't be "expected" to brick under these conditions (worked fine with pre-JB RUUs), and nobody here has really been able to explain exactly why the phone bricks from SuperCID. But unfortunately, it does.

[Q] Brick or not?

HI all,
I tried to flashed the RUU but it seems that the version I flashed was lower than the one I had.
Now the screen is just black and I can not use the power + down vol to get to fastboot at all.
it will be greatly appreciated if I can get some guidance to get to the fastboot.

Download correct HTC One X boot.img and RUU based on CID. Download CID Getter from Google Play Store and run it, it will show your CID.
For this case, cidnum is HTC_044. The correct RUU is X.XX.707.X. Make sure you have downloaded the correct RUU.
Extract Fastboot.zip into a new folder, renamed the folder to Fastboot. Recommended to extract the folder to drive.
Copy and paste the downloaded stock recovery img and boot img into Fastboot folder.
Boot HTC One X into fastboot mode by press and hold Volume Down + Power button.
Connect your phone to the computer via USB cable.
At your computer, open up Command Prompt windows. (To OpenCommand Prompt –> Windows Logo–> Type CMD in search box –>Enter)
Type fastboot flash recovery endeavoru_recovery_signed.img , followed by fastboot reboot-bootloader and fastboot erase cache.
Once you flashed the stock recovery, continue to flash boot.img to your phone. Type fastboot flash boot boot.img, followed by fastboot reboot-bootloader and fastboot erase cache.
Now, relock the bootloader by typing fastboot oem lock, followed by fastboot reboot-bootloader and fastboot erase cache.
Your phone will restart after you have relock the bootloader.
Boot into Fastboot mode.
Double click the RUU, follow the updater instruction.
Wait the sending file to your phone, it normally takes 5-6 minutes.
Once the installation/update completes, your phone will automatically reboot.
when I last look at the details My CID is still 11111111 but status "RELOCKED" - it says also "EVITA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL"
HBOOT 2.14.0000
does this mean that I can safely run RUU:
RUU_EVITA_UL_ICS_40_S_hTC_Asia_HK_2.42.708.3_Radio_0.20os.32.09.15_10.113.32.28L_release_286715_signed.7z
If there still more things to do, would you kindly direct me to the correct link to follow.
THank you
Never mind, didn't read properly. Will edit and repost.

Your first problem is that you're flashing things that aren't intended for your device. The recovery you flashed is for the Endeavoru, you have the Evita. The second problem is it looks like you're getting your information from the wrong place, to go back to stock you don't need to flash a recovery or a boot.img, all you need to do is flash the right RUU for your device. What RUU did you already run? I need the exact filename. Does your phone power on at all? Can you reach the bootloader?

I see you're looking at all kinds of different threads at the moment, that isn't going to help because I don't think you know exactly what you're doing, you don't know what you've done, and you don't know how to recover from it. Your best bet is to stay in this thread and I'll try to help you work out what's gone wrong.

U should download one that has the same radio as yrs also it will take fast download speed otherwise it will keep breaking up. t took me 4 attempts before I manage to download it yesterday (same file as one u r trying) good luck cheers!
You got seriously lucky. You ran an RUU intended for the HTC One X (codename Endeavoru), you don't have that phone. You have the HTC One XL / at&t One X (codename Evita), they're completely different phones. Note how the first RUU you ran has Endeavoru in the filename, that's bad, really bad, don't ever flash anything that doesn't have the Evita codename within the filename. If it has Evita in the filename it's for your phone, if it has anything else don't touch it, burn it, run away. Like I said, you're incredibly lucky your phone isn't bricked right now.
I can only assume that you're a bit confused and have been hopping between the two forums for these phones. In future stay within this device forum that you're posting in now, don't ever go anywhere else. You don't even need to visit other websites because, seriously, everything you'll ever need is right here within this device forum. Plus other sites don't properly distinguish between the models which causes confusion.
Anyway. The second RUU that you've listed there is perfectly fine for your phone. I can't guarantee that it's going to work though because previously running the wrong RUU could have really messed things up on your phone. But your only hope is to cross your fingers and run it now. Let me know how it all goes.

What are you talking about? He doesn't need to use an RUU with the same radio/baseband that's currently on his device, that's just wrong. Firstly the idea of an RUU is to update your device, therefore traditionally you'd be updating to a newer radio version than the one that's currently installed. With s-on you can only run an RUU that contains a firmware version that's equal to or greater than your current firmware. This user has s-off though so he can run any RUU that he wants to, including earlier ones (RUU'ing backwards). I don't know where you got the idea that you need to run an RUU with the same radio as your existing radio but it's just plain wrong, and you really shouldn't be telling people that.

False. With s-on, you can only run RUUs for your CID, and with the same or latter hboot and firmware number. So if you were having trouble flashing an RUU, its probably because you were s-on and trying to either flash another carrier's RUU, or an older version.
The OP is s-off, so therefore all security checks are off. He can flash the RUU for any carrier, any version. As long as its meant for our device (EVITA), of course.
Hi guys
Thank you for all the guidance.
I got the 4.1.1 on my phone now and phone is use-able. I can not thank you guys enough for the help.
After i finished RUU flash the phone detected the new firmware update. When i dowloaded and tried to update, it says that the phone has been modified and they can not run/install the update. When i checked my boot it shows :
"relocked"
cid is still 111111.
Evita pvt ship s-off RL
HBOOT: 2.14
radio : 0.23a.32.09.29
Do i need to do more installation before my phone can get the update from HTC like the one coming out from the factory?
Cheers.

I searching in the forum about changing CID. But it seems that is all about how to change CID to 111111. Is there any tutorial to revert back to original CID?
Do i need to sort out my s-off first before changing CID?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Timmaa
I believe I am S-OFF - when I look at the bootloader screen it said S-OFF.
Do I need to flash anything at all to get my CID back to original?
On that note I was looking at the RedPoint73 resource guide page but I am not able to find the tutorial to make the CID back to original.
Any info is greatly appreciated.
Cheers
All you need to do is issue a fastboot command:
Code:
fastboot oem writecid xxxxxxxx
The x's represent the new CID.

was the 622 number incorrect?

No, 622 isn't a CID. A correct CID consists of eight characters, that's why I put eight x's in my example. What model is your phone? You need find the right CID for your model and change it to that. You need to be more careful, you're attempting things without knowing what you're doing again, you're in serious danger of damaging your phone.

Hi Timmaa
My phone is HTC ONE XLTE
I use CID Getter and it came up with HTC__622, so I entered that into the fastboot command and it changed my CID but when I try to flash the new update downloaded directly through the phone it came up with the messsage below after verifying the phone.
not sure why.....( pls see attached)
So you ran the RUU.exe? You didn't extract it or anything? What have you done to the phone since then?

[Q] HTC One XL Evita trouble restoring to stock HELP

Hello,
So I have a HTC One XL Telstra (Australia) evita phone. I purchased it already rooted and I want to take it back to stock. I managed to RELOCK my phone back and now it only boots into the bootloader.
I have found the following RUU RUU_Evita_UL_Telstra_WWE_1.89.841.9_Radio_0.18c.32 .09.01_10.93a.32.20L_release_266699_signed but when I try to load it onto my phone I get an error that my bootloader is too new for this file. For the last two days I have been searching for a newer RUU but come up with nothing. Also CID hasnt been changed.
Now I am stuck, I am quite switched on with all OS but this is a first for me with Android. The following are the details in my bootloader:
EVITA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.14.0000
RADIO-0.23a.32.09.29
OpenDSP-v31.1.0.45.0815
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I don't have any backups.
Cheers!
You can't RUU backwards while you're s-on, that's your problem. Unlock your bootloader again, flash a custom rooted ROM, get s-off, then you can run any Evita RUU you want to.

Now this is where the fun starts, I thought of that but when I got to unlock it in htcdev the identification token is invaild for some unknown reason even though the CID hasnt been changed.
The idea is to just get it back to all stock.
Do you still have the original unlock token?

I know what your purpose is, and the instructions I detailed will get you there. Now that you've unlocked, flash TWRP, flash rooted ROM, get s-off, run the RUU you want to run, relock bootloader, take OTA's. It's the only way to do it after the mistake you made.

Half way there, up to s-off. Do you know of any tutorials specifcally related to the one xl? Btw thanks for all the help.
There are two s-off methods for our phone, Facepalm and Rumrunner. Facepalm won't work for you because it requires SuperCID, so Rumrunner is the one you want. Just go to that website and it explains everything. I haven't personally used it because I got s-off ages ago but it looks like a piece of cake.

[Q] Stuck on Hboot/fastboot with full stock phone

Hi guys,
My sister sent me her HTC One SV aka K2-UL i offered her from expansys on june, it is stuck on Hboot
*** LOCKED***
K2_UL XA SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0000
eMMC Boot
...
I can go to Fastboot USB ( or AC )
She 's worst than a noob so phone is stock, up to date but non-root non-unlock, still S-ON and so on.
just once phone reboot and stay stuck...
From here i can navigate but after reboot i'm still here.
I tried :
factory reset and recovery (with rom renamed PL80DIAG but would be too easy...)
RUU but RUU asked for bootloader so stuck on "waiting for bootloader"
go to htc dev to unlock bootloader but after flash unlock token ( unlock token check successfully) but : Nothing happens and still writtten ***Locked*** then if I "fastboot oem unlock" it says failed :<remote : loading custom splash failed>
fastboot flash boot.img but nothing works since still S-on and locked bootloader (superCID is out too)
flash custom recovey or even fresh stock recovery but nothing worked for the same reasons...
Do you guys have any idea of something i could do?
Thanks for your answer and forgive my English I'm French
As long as you are ***LOCKED*** you can quiet do nothing.
To use our available RUU you must also be unlocked & S-Off.
Somewhat the same situation
I am stuck here:

I can get into Fastboot as well as bootloader, I CANNOT GET INTO RECOVERY. I have tried to restore with the respective RUU files from the All things HTC ONE SV forum. I have also tried to flash the recovery boot and radio img files through fastboot usb. NONE of this has worked for me. I really enjoyed this phone before I went and made it all FUBR. If there is anyway to get it to boot to any recovery or rom, i will much appreciate it. Thanks for all your help from previous posts as well as any future help I get from information posted here.
Related to your hboot, you should be able to flash any recoveries, but i usually recommend this one.
What command do you use to flash recovery and do you get an output from "fastboot devices"?

Thanks a million for the replies. I was able to lead the recovery and get into it (the most progress i have had in a year with this phone). With that being done. When I go into recovery I am unable to mount the internal storage. I am not too sure of the procedures I need to go through to get this thing functional again. I have been tinkering with my S3 for the last few months, but with KNOX on now I am looking to Jump ship completely from both verizon and samsung. Enough rambling, Like I said thanks for the help, any assistance in getting this thing to boot to a ROM would be much appreciated.
BTW
I used the fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
I have tried this before with no success. This time it worked.
I also flased the Radio and Boot img for ICS.
Thanks.

If yes, use moonshine.io or rumrunner.us to get S-off.

Wow! Awsome! This bad boy booted. I was able to flash the rom through recovery. This is much further than I expected to get with this device. Now when I try to go S-Off with either moonshine or rumrunner I get an error saying not able to make adb connection. When I use fastboot devices my device will show up...if i do adb devices nothing...Would love to have S-Off and SU installed. But like I said this is much further than I expected to get so anything further is icing on the cake. Thanks in Advance.

He can just use the Naked Driver for the adb driver. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263822
Ok I DID have USB debugging enabled. After messing with the drivers and my Windows 8 computer, I have came to the conclusion that it is something with the drivers and their compatibility with Windows 8. Either way moonshine or rumnunner never worked for me in a windows 8 environment. I dual boot ubuntu 12.04 anyway, it saw my device just fine adb and fastboot. I ran moonshine and it went through all the testing stages, but was never able to completely run...so I still have no S-Off. Do I need to update Hboot or anything? Also am I able to load a custom rom on this device with S-ON? I have been looking but I do not see many out for this device at all, which is a shame because I feel as though it is very comparable to my GS3. It would be nice to see a nice AOSP ROM on this device. But all take any updates I can for the device, hopefully it will help with the issue I have will cell reception dropping all the time. Thanks
To answer some of your questions:
- you can't update hboot because you are not stock and not S-off
- there are indeed not much roms to flash, but you could do with S-on (and unlocked bootloader)
- if you would flash the Sense 5/Android 4.2.2 rom, you would have noizy sound, without the firmware files (which you need S-Off to flash)
Another way for getting S-off (which should work with your hboot), is facepalm.
But the part of changing CID to SuperCID is very risky, read carefully and only do, when you are sure you understand, what to do!!!
