Hey guys! So this isn't my first time on XDA, I came here for my old phone, the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit or Exhibit II. I completely broke my phone in December, 2013, and I've been on the lookout for a new phone. After looking at everything, I've decided that the Nexus 5 is the best fit for me. It's damn sexy too, for a smartphone, that is. The best part is, I got the red one that they started to sell on the Play store today.
So anyways, I am here to simply be with a community that will aid me in my adventures with the Nexus 5 (probably until the Nexus 6 comes out or something, though lol). Though I will most likely get my phone later this week or early next week, I am doing research on rooting. I heard about CF-Root and if it works I plan to donate to him (did it work for you guys? did you guys find any issues with installation?).
I'm so happy. How are you guys with your Nexus 5's?

Thanks! But I'm a bit confused. You know Chainfire's CF-Auto Root for Nexus 5, right. I thought it basically added SuperSU at the price of all of my data. In the process of installing it, don't I already unlock fast boot? So can I simply flash a recovery after using the tool kit from Chainfire by using the instructions from the thread you showed me?

I would unlock the bootloader, put on a custom recovery and then root all from the link I gave you. No need to use chainfires auto root. You'll be learning how to use your new nexus 5 the correct way. It's a very easy device to mode if you learn it right. Welcome to the nexus 5

That sounds great! Thanks for being such a great help! Just one thing though. Is this part of the process from the link you gave me necessary:
"Driver Installation - Try this first, but if that doesn't work look here. Still having issues? Give this a try. None of these working? Hopefully this does the trick."
If I simply install the android sdk the way the link showed me, will I be fine (I just installed all four packages I was told to install) to continue with unlocking the fastboot, installing a custom recovery and installing SuperSU?
Also, I want to make sure I'm understanding things. Unlocking fastboot is in order to get inside of the device's core software and reimage it to whatever we want, and installing a custom recovery gives the user more accessibility from the recovery menu, and it's main feature is being able to flash updates and ROMs.
Nothin wrong with using chainfires autoroot. Works great.
Driver installation is necessary, and is for any method you use. It can be a pita and if anything slows you down that'll be it.
Unlocking the bootloader wipes your entire device so you want to do that before you install apps, etc. Again whatever method you use you'll need to unlock. I highly recommend you use this method and not a tool kit.

Thanks! I'm so excited to root this phone. I haven't had a phone since last year! See what I did there? Since my phone was broken in December 2013 and now it's 2014...
But either way, how is your Nexus? Any tips other than rooting and stuff you can tell me relating to it?

It's a great phone and I love it. Very easy to root and mod with custom roms. But do your home work and read a lot here. Look in the general forum at the pinned threads, the ones at the top. Lots of good info there. If you have questions search first for similar threads and if you don't see any post your question. They're lots of good people here who will help if you've done that first.

I've noticed a trend recently in which people using CF's autoroot seem to be running into issues. Either way, rooting the proper way is better. Rooting through a custom recovery installs the SuperSU binaries and the latest version of SuperSU onto the system partition all in one step. Less chances for things to go wrong.
I had 14 different phones in 2014 (yes I need rehab) and I have to say the nexus 5 and the htc one are tied for my favorite. The nexus has been so reliable day in and day out and never causes me an issue. No surprises, no random drains, just performance. KitKat is on a whole different playing field, and getting the stock experience is truly something to look forward to. You will not be let down! Enjoy it and I'm so jealous you got the red!

OEM unlock so much easier to unlock on Linux no drivers needed. Just adb and fastboot. Mad jelly you got the red one.

The SuperOneClick rooting method outlined in this thread currently only works for Android 2.2. It does not work with Gingerbread 2.3.3.
To root 2.3.3 -
1) Install CWM (ClockworkMod Recovery): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847

Here's a brief guide on how to root the T-Mobile G2x. This assumes that you already have adb installed. If you do not, a quick search will point you in the right direction
Note: I take no credit for rooting the G2x. I am not the developer of SuperOneClick, and this is a simplified version of a guide already posted by domi007 in the O2x forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953182). I am just posting a guide in the G2x forum because no one else has yet.
1) Install ADB driver: http://www.junefabrics.com/bin2/LGDriver.exe
2) Enable USB debugging on your phone (Settings->Applications->Development), and connect your phone to your computer via USB.

I apologize for the Windows only solution I've posted. Since I moved in with my girlfriend, Windows has weaseled it's way back into my household. However, there was a time when I wouldn't let a Windows box come within 100 yards of my place of residence.

Ha no problem. I can just install Parallels or Fusion today. I did manage to get SuperOneClick running on my mac using Mono. However, I don't see any way to install the LG drivers executable file on the Mac, so I doubt SOC will work in this manner without those drivers... not sure if I want to risk trying it.

Hey thanks for posting this! I currently own a G2, rooted with cm7. I'm planning on picking this beast up in-store on Wednesday and I'm already itching to root it and get a custom ROM on there.
One question though, does this method achieve a permanent root? My only experience with android thus far is the G2, which required an involved process to root. Is this phone just a lot easier to root for some reason??
And then as far as recoveries and ROM's I'm assuming those haven't been released for this phone yet, right??

Yes permanent root. This G2x is not as locked down as the G2, making the process a whole lot easier. And no, no recovery yet, just stay tuned to these forums.

I already have ADB driver and SOC ready and I rooted few phones through this way.

Nope. It will not.
Received the phone today, rooted it within 5 minutes within hooking up to the computer using the superoneclick tool.
I think it took longer to install the drivers, and SuperOneClick than it did to root the phone.
Alright good to know. Just wondering than if yall have a general idea how long it usually takes a device to get an unlock with root, I am not sure because this would be the first phone for me that I am getting close to the release date.

If you want to SIM unlock this phone, you can call t-mobile after you have purchased the phone, give them the IMEI number, and in about 2 weeks they will email you the unlock code for the phone.
Mine will be here today sometime.

I purchased a Galaxy Exhilarate last weekend. This phone was just released by AT&T a few days before that. After playing around with the phone, and doing some reading, I can admit, they've done a decent job. Of course, it comes with all the standard "bloat" that all the phones have, but it also has a few nice things too.
For one, reading using the Barnes & Noble Nook App is not bad, esp. since I own a Nook. To read the same books I'm reading on my nook, just tell the nook app the same account you use for your nook, and all your purchased content (including games) will be available. Of course, my Nook is hacked with Android, and I can do far more than just read books on it. Anyway, I'm off topic here.
After toying around with the phone, I decided it was time to delve deeper into it, and look at rooting it. I did a quick search, and, well, there's NOTHING out there on how to root it!
I also wasn't sure how to get into the Android Restore mode.
After looking into it, I figured it out on my own
1) Power down the phone
2) Push & hold both the UP and DOWN volume buttons and then push and hold the Power button.
3) "Samsung" will come up, and then disappear. AS SOON as it disappears, release all the buttons
The phone will now boot into the Android System Recovery mode.
As I'm just getting started, I'll post more when I get to that point!

Rooting the Galaxy Exhilarate
Hello , I'm new to the forum , but I also purchased the Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate recently. I'm sad to say that although you SHOULD be able to "root the phone using a standard technique for Android 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 Gingerbread" , I cannot. I follow the procedure for rooting Androids 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 Gingerbread (using the attached file that you provided), and it gave me a message stating "E:failed to verify whole-file signature. (new line) E:signature verification failed". I'm a noob when it comes to Androids to know what this message means, however I'm hoping you can provide me with some much needed assistance
P.S. I've tried to research around, very thoroughly in my opinion, so this is a last resort of sorts haha

You cant apply unofficial updates through the stock recovery as it will check to see if it is signed by samsung. Either patch the recovery or find another way to root.

I have used CWM before. I look forward to your solution. I think the Exhilarate is similar to another AT&T phone that may already be rooted, but I don't know if one phone's hack/root will apply to another, similar phone.
Anyone else have any suggestions?
Made several unsuccessful attempts to root this device with SuperOneClick v2.3.3 and DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT for Skyrocket (i727). On a side note, rebooting restores all uninstalled at&t bloatware.
I got one of these by chance and was wondering if anyone has tried Odin to push cwm? Has anyone found anything on this? I can help....just need to know where to start.

Flash a kernel with a patched recovery then install the su files from the recovery.
That's how antsm did it for the galaxy ace 2, try give him a message and see if he'll whip up a quick kernel for you. I would give it a go but I don't have a Linux machine right now. Remember to ask him politely though.

If someone could get a system dump I would greatly appreciate it. I somehow manage to screw up the stock recovery and now my capacitive buttons only respond once or twice after booting and then they appear to lock up. Attempted to do a full restore through Kies with no success. Chatted with samsung and they say at this time there is no way to do a full reinstall.

Ok, been trying to get root access and/or do a system dump on the phone.
So far, no luck.
However, I have been able to get the phone to dump its system properties...

I used the ADB to get shell access to the phone. When I type the command "su dd if=/dev/block/stl6 of=/sdcard/factoryfs.rfs" I get "su: permission denied".
So, assuming "su" is superuser, how do I get that if my phone isn't rooted???

I pushed the skyrocket cwm and my phone did not like it. I think cwm is actually trying to come up but it's ugly and not usable. The phone still boots but the capacitive buttons are locking up. I have since pushed the s3 stock att recovery and the s3 cwm with no success. I'm using my htc aria because the phone is mostly useless without the buttons. I'm up to custom binary flash count 3 now. I will probably get a chance to play more this weekend but i just started a 5 wk probability and statistics class and a history class that are eating all my time during the week.

I think you may have gone the wrong way about this - however, I am working on a manual root for the phone - and I think I may have something soon!
If/when I get rooted, I'll make sure I post the original img so you can at least recover your phone back to stock.

I was originally trying to root to be able to install cwn through rom manager, but since that didn'tr work I was trying to push CWM thru Odin so I could do a a nadroid and then try to flash superuser and busybox through cwm. I admit I don't know much about it.This is only my second android phone and the first time I've had a backup if I mess something up
I keep searching trying to find stuff. I found a thread on another forum that led me to getting root. I know patience is a virtue, and all, but I should would like to see some work on roms, and recoveries, and for there to actually be a section on XDA for this device.
Yeah I accidentally tried to flash a bootloader from the "Verizon-GS3-CASUAL-Revision131a" java program. I lost my backups in the process so can anyone give me a hand with a backup from thier Stellar?

I'm to afraid to mess something up to flash something that someone else hasn't said that it works. I used to do that with my Captivate, but I need this phone to work, and not stuck in infinite bootloop

If you got ClockworkMod recovery onto your phone (as I saw you got it rooted) you may be able to give me a zip and I think I can make it into a .tar file so Odin will read it since Odin mode is the only mode my phone will get into right now.
I'll keep looking around for some other methods of backup...I also heard Titanium Backup wasn't too bad...

Hmm...you bring up a good point. It's best I not ask you to put in a new recovery mode since we don't know what exactly that will do to the Stellar. I will say that before I bricked the phone I actually did make it work...barely so lets not do that.
Can you try using some programs that access the phone through the computer?
Google this: Index of /romdump
You should find a little program calle Romdump. It should extract the roms without messing anything up.
Do you know about ADB? If not I do have enough experience to help you with that.
You need to have a clockwork mod recovery that is built for this phone, or whatever phone you are using, in order to get it to flash. Without a custom recovery for the galaxy stellar, or at least a recovery that is sure to work for this phone (I think I heard about some S3 stuff that works for the stellar, like the root method I think you used) the recovery will not flash and your phone will not load until you reflash the stock recovery.
Do not flash any recoveries until you know they work for your phone (i.e. someone has tested them), or without a backup of your stock recovery.
Since you are both saying you're not devs and don't really know what you're doing (neither do I really) I would suggest not flashing any recoveries that have not been confirmed to work for the stellar. Yes, many people use CWM and TWRP but there is a custom build of those recoveries for every phone, they are not universal.
I'm really interested in this phone so I'm hoping some development starts. Without community support and development I don't think I would bother switching to Verizon to get this phone even though its free. I hate cell phone contracts...

I thought there would be a lot more people like me who needed a new phone, didn't really have money for an upgrade, so they went with this phone like I did. Doesn't really seem like it has gained much interest in the dev community. It still doesn't have it's own subforum on here. I am starting to really regret getting this phone. Half the fun of having android for me was the dev, and community support for the devices I had in the past. I had the galaxy s, and the inspire 4g, both of which had really big communities, and they started pretty much right at the release for those phones.
Has it even been out an entire month yet?

STOCK ROM!
HEY guys I rooted my phone already. Things were going great, until i decided to download some kind of font switch. I guess it is required for the phone to be root. Then it asked me to restart my phone, that's when my phone froze on the samsung logo screen . It' stuck there ever since. I did a factory reset, and that didn't work either. So i downloaded ODIN and im waiting for a STOCK rom! can anybody help me with that and PM me?It would be great THANKS!

Sovereign738111 and I worked on this yesterday and got the recovery, system, and bootloader images off of my phone and into a couple of files. Now we just need a developer to give them to...In the meantime I'm also reading up on how to build a custom ROM etc. so that I can get familiarized with it. That way I can possibly try it myself. I know how to compile my own regular Linux kernel and add packages and things of that nature, and looking at what I've seen so far, figuring this out for Android shouldn't be too difficult.
I don't have the Stellar but I would be willing to work on a ROM for you guys. If someone would give me the files I need, I'll gladly do it. Just need a couple of people to test also.

I have a LG Mach (AKA Cayenne, LS860) LG Apparently algo named the LU3000 "Mach" as well for w/e reason. There is a distinct lack of ANYbody developing for this phone. I would like to take on doing it myself, but I am unclear on how to start. I managed after about a week to root the stock rom, but I can't find any recoveries for it. How should I go about this?
I understand that this is a very in depth question and for most, it would be too much to tackle. However, I have a background in C++ and Visual Basic (though I am a little rusty). Any direction would be nice and I am willing and capable of learning anything necessary to accomplish this.

Well this is a combination of bump / information. Since there is a lack of information regarding this phone out here, I figured I would share the method I used to root this phone. It works on the stock 4.0.4 rom.

I just won this phone, and I'm putting the term LG MACH ROOT/LG MACH BOOTLOADER in this thread so people can find it via google.
There is pretty much no developer love for this phone...
I don't care which way you do it. Personally I prefer TWRP because of it's touch controls.

Well, it looks like its up to me and you:
Im going to compile TWRP tonight for it, and if all goes well, I will create a new thread with the rooting method and recovery explained. However, know that you will officially be person #2 to use this recovery image. All warnings and potential problems will apply.

I haven't got the phone yet actually. Briefmobile informed that I won and that sprint will ship it. I don't know anything more than that :/ I hope soon. It'd be fun to mess with the phone while my college break is going on still.

All good, it takes time to develop these things anyways. I should have a stable TWRP build within a few days, and a CyanogenMod 10.1 (Android 4.2) build complete in the next couple of weeks.
The bootloader is something I am going to tackle tonight. As you can tell, there is zero documentation on the web for this device. In fact, it received more attention when it was a concept than it does now. So for now, I have no answer on the bootloader. I hope so, or all my work is useless lol. However, root is obtained at a bare minimum
Anyone out there that comes across this thread that wants to find information on modding this phone, PLEASE post your interest here. Trust me, you won't find any other resources.
lg locked bootloaders
I have the lg motion, I don't know how close it is to the mach but I've been following a thread for several months that has been trying to figure out a workaround for the locked boot loader. Google all things root guide for lg motion and you might be able to find a decent starting point for your phones maybe even help them figure out the motion
Ok, well I think, for now at least, root is all we are getting . I have managed to develop and compile ClockworkMod Recovery TeamWin Recovery, and Cyanogenmod 10.1 for it, but realized after all that work that the bootloader is not only locked, but also signed with a digitally encrypted key. Basically in laymans terms: We are ****ed. So, if anybody manages to shmooze either Sprint or LG out of these unlock codes, let me know and I'll provide everything else. Otherwise, anything I have made will brick every LS860 it goes on. Sorry guys.

Thats correct. At least from my understanding. I could be wrong, but without the ability to unlock the bootloader i dont want to try flashing recovery. Too risky for me. Ill give anyone who wants to try my twrp build but i wont accept any repercussion for it doing anythin negative

I just rooted it. Was super easy.
Tried adb reboot bootloader. Did nothing. Tried adb reboot recovery. Recovered the device. Can't seem to figure out a way to have it download software. (like nvflash) Wonder if there's a special cable...

So I already bricked two, lol. Not going for a third. I really wanna root this phone. I went as far as getting the firmware which is a cab file. But then I guess you have to convert that to a kdz file. Then decrypt the kdz file. Well it appears you need to be an LG Service tech to use the program. Was hoping there was work around for all this,

I rooted it, it was easy using the sony tool that does the adb backup remount bug, but that's as far as I got. I uninstalled a bunch of crap off of the system partition and its a lot faster now, too bad I can't get that activation screen to go away.
Just pulled the newest OTA. I found it in /cache. I tried to get the URL but instead I made it so it no longer sees there's an update... I have the zip file however, and inside of it there is patches to just about everything in system, and updates to magazines, chrome, and LGBookmarksProvider.
There's also a command to install a recovery image:
#!/system/bin/sh
/sbin/write_recovery /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
Not sure if it's a good idea to flash that... forgot that it's still locked bootloader
EDIT: Finally figured out download mode... I just held all the buttons down when starting it and voila, it's there. I also hear you can use the LG Software update tool to flash back to stock, so we might finally have root that's safe
Does anyone have the BooksTablet.apk found in /system/app? I'm not sure why but it won't install the update cause the sha1 of that file fails I don't know where to find it.

Can someone rip me their BooksTablet.apk and BooksTablet.odex from their LS860 and PM me a link to it? I really am pissed off at the update prompt (I'm not sure why it's not working, I haven't touched it and I made sure I backed everything up... It won't validate BooksTablet.apk) I'm on the stock original version of the software ZV6 or something... not the ZV7.
I really don't want to go into sprint that much, though I might have to do that soon.
Edit: Just called sprint. They won't do anything for me and I'm not going to pay money for someone to reflash my phone. It's pretty ridiculous how factory images for devices aren't released. You know how many issues this would solve? That's why nexus devices are great. They're practically unbrickable.

I have a rooted, unlocked bootloader, custom "recoveryed" Nexus 5, on stock 4.4.4 and stock kernel.
My question is, when Android L comes around, what should I do to update. Doing an OTA update is probably not the best idea right? Since I am rooted and have a custom recovery. So, what would be the steps to take to update. I don´t mind loosing root or making a fresh install.
Anyway just a noob question about something that I never had to do, since I rooted it on 4.4.4.

You can OTA update fine. It will just remove root is all.
Get the wugfresh toolbox and reinstall root after. This is what I do every time.
Don't use toolkits.

I've been away from the Nexus 5 forum for a while, I come back and this is still happening. Please don't recommend rootkits for people who are clearly new to android modification. As said a million times on these forums, rootkits are fine if you know what you're doing but not for beginners. Beginners need to do things manually because they need to be able to fix their own mistakes if they're simple. Instead of going back here and asking very basic questions which they could have answered themselves if they didn't use a rootkit.
OP: Please do as @rootSU said and flash a factory image. His sig contains all the threads and information you need. It's a very handy tool which can fix your phone's software problems in almost any situation. Especially in the case of Android L (an update with HUGE internal changes), I highly recommend flashing factory image. This is what I will be doing. The factory image completely replaces your OS with stock.

That made me think they were bad or something.
Technically like myself he is all stock he said, so aside root hes already pretty much stock OS.
Not sure where the animosity is. Also he obviously knows how to root and install custom Bls if hes done it before.
I very rarely pop in here anymore myself unless there is a major issue but doing things the way Ive been has pretty much eliminated those (jinx). Im still more on the Nexus S forum since I tinker with that more as my mp3 player.
He could always just take a backup before updating and dive in. Ive done that in the past with fine results.
Also even IF you do everything manually first and down the line screw up something theres a pretty BIG chance youll be here asking wtf happened. It happens to the best of us at one point or another.

they are bad if you dont know what you're doing
the animosity comes in to play when you read the forums daily and you see threads saying "HELP i tried to use such and such toolkit and now my phone doesnt work"

Yeah, but that's why we ask people to read all the threads before starting to mess with the device first. If you understand how the basic things work and what you're actually doing to achieve root, it's alot easier to troubleshoot very basic problems yourself. Of course for bigger issues people can feel free to post and get help. Also, if they did read everything and still messed up, when they post they're able to list the steps they've taken in the post so people can help them better. Otherwise, it becomes "help I messed up, I don't know what to do, I pressed the start button on the toolkit and my phone doesn't turn on."
Regarding the first part of your post, I still think it's just better to start fresh. Yeah, you can do a backup and try it but I honestly think it will be wasting time. It's always good to start fresh once in a while even if you don't use xposed/rooted apps. Eventually, your phone gets cluttered with apps and sometimes they conflict and you have battery issues, and other issues, etc. Since L is the biggest update to android since even I've been involved in it (I only started getting involved in XDA around 4.0), I would highly recommend everyone flashes the factory image and starts fresh. That way you will also know if there are bugs with L itself, or if's the fact that you installed on top of kitkat and all your prior data that's causing the issue. Anyway, no hard feelings. You said you don't spend a lot of time here so it's understandable.

Well my bad, Ive never seen that. But toolkits (mainly this one) have very detailed instructions. Let alone the same issues happen when using ADB and push.
Its a double edged sword. I get the , go the long route first, which even I did (but also pre root kits), but In my own defense reading the OP he already did root and BL his phone (to my assumptions) so I didnt think my input was that bad.

I ran the L beta a while so honestly Im not that worried. JINX, Im sure you will be answering my HELP thread in 4 weeks! lol
There was no animosity from me. I simply said "don't use toolkits" and that was for good reasons which have been well written in the (General) sticky threads that all new users should read
The problem is we have to waste our time trying to explain what fastboot is to someone who broke their phone after only having used a toolkit. This is why we prefer people don't use them or recommend them.
On top of that,many toolkits are multi-device and this can cause bricks when faced with uneducated users.

Yhea. I also remember, when I was first serching for ways to root the Nexus 5 on stock 4.4.4, I saw many warnings saying to not use toolkits.
I ended up usung CF-Auto-Root, wich is not a toolkit right? :-/

Its not but it still sort of removes some of the manual steps we hope you would learn doing it all manually.
Best place to start is the general sticky thread. My adb and fastboot thread is designed to be a good start for people looking for basic info. Then anyone looking to actually root can move on to the rooting guides which employ much of what was learned in the former thread.

Right. I was checking the guide from the thread in your signature and saw the way you did the root. I've done the fastboot and bootloader unlock and all those thing, but when I got to the root part I used the CF-Auto-Root. Is this going to give me problems?
