Hangouts is for video calls.

thanks for the reply
yeah hangouts can be used for video call, but i saw many android phones have the video call option directly on a name in the contacts.
so i was wondering if i could have that shortcut on the dialer of moto g too...

but hangouts would use 3g data and not the 3g video calling feature of service provider....correct me if m mistaken!!

still uses data. and you can say it isn't charge to your data cuz you are paying 50p/min. again it uses data. for specific questions about your plan this isn't the place. talk to your provider.

There isn't support for it in stock android.Only if the manufacturer decideds to put its own in the dailer/contacts apps (samsung for example has it ot many phones of theirs).
Also I didn't see any port of that feature at all, but since I don't care for expensive operator-hosted video calling, I might missed it up if it was ever ported.

you are not alone. i spent times to explain to them who surprisingly an android, ios developer about this native video calling and they insist its 3g data used. after i said that, my mother can receive my video call without any plan or credits whatsoever in her phone, they all surprised
at this time only samsung and some local brands are having this. sony-ericksson already started this feature back in 2004/2005, and samsung keep using this feature on their windows phone 5.x/6.x (not with current win phone 7/8) , also to all samsung android devices.
you will never has this feature activated on google nexus since android doesnt support this feature on the os.
i assume, your phone is samsung. coz, lg , acer and lenovo hasnt as well as nexus.

I had Xolo q800, and it ran on jb , but most importantly it had that native video call feature. Actually its different to video call over data( as it happens in Skype, hangout). But I am surprised to see that such a feature is not available on much hyped miui ROM. And in this call you pay as per the plan of provider, not by our data mb.

Mobile network video calls are outdated and no one uses them anymore
People use VOIP instead like hangouts or skype

Verizon VoLTE

Verizon just rolled out their Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) system today. It promises HD audio and the ability to seamlessly make a voice call into a video call. Verizon is mute at the moment as to which handsets they plan to roll out this feature but I would assume we'll be included as the One M8 supports the AWS spectrum.
Two big downsides are that if you move from LTE to EV-DO you'll lose the call and the potential bandwidth requirements against our ever tightening data caps.
Thoughts?
Verizon Wireless subscribers with the right handsets will be able to start making high-definition voice and video calls over the carrier’s LTE network in the next few weeks, kicking off a long-awaited transition that eventually will eliminate Verizon’s traditional cellular technology.
VoLTE, or voice over LTE, will offer quicker call setup, make voice conversations sound better and let users jump into a video chat just by tapping a button on the screen, Verizon says. But those high-fidelity calls will drop if you leave the LTE coverage area, and last week Verizon wasn’t ready to say which phones will be ready to use the service when it launches.
VoLTE turns phone calls into packets and sends them over the same network that carries data from apps and the Web. It’s a more efficient way for mobile operators to deliver voice service and lets them devote more bandwidth to calls, allowing for higher quality sound: seven octaves, versus just four on circuit-switched 3G networks, according to Verizon.
In the demonstration last week, which Verizon said was over its commercial LTE network, VoLTE calls were distinctly clearer and the video calls had fairly good quality and video-to-voice synchronization.
With VoLTE on, subscribers will be able to make and receive VoLTE calls using regular phone numbers between any two Verizon phones that have the software activated. Part of the new technology is a presence feature that indicates on the contact list which people currently have VoLTE capability. A call with anyone else, or one that you start outside the LTE coverage area, will only have CDMA quality. And even though they’re made up of data packets, the new HD voice and video calls won’t work over Wi-Fi.

HTC claims that hardware wise, the m8 is capable of VoLTE. It would just have to be activated with a software upgrade!
Hmm... you may be right:
the HTC One (M8) for Windows will reportedly boast voice over LTE (VoLTE) support as well.
It remains unclear at this point whether the smartphone will rock VoLTE straight out of the box, but if not, Microsoft should add the support with its upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 update.

Verizon didn't specify which devices are compatible with the service. Most, if not all, of Verizon's smartphones include LTE 4G, but apparently not all of them have the horsepower to run VoLTE. Expect it to appear first on high-end devices such as the HTC One (M8), LG G3, and Samsung Galaxy S5. Perhaps it will also be available to the iPhone 6, which is expected to launch next month.
To access VoLTE, Verizon's smartphone customers will need to update their devices. The update will include Advanced Calling 1.0, the application that powers HD Voice and Video Calling.

I suspect that given the fact that the phone should have the hardware capability to support VoLTE, even if Verizon doesn't roll it out officially, we can see some developers here unlocking that 'Advanced Calling' app.
Also, I found this thread where some people were claiming they already had VoLTE meanwhile that'd be impossible since the network wasn't setup until just now...

ok, with a root explorer of your choice, go to /system/customize/ACC and you will see default.xml. Open it with a text editor.
The lines you are looking for are pretty far down, they look like this: (see volte.png image)
I changed three lines to true which you will see there.
incidentally I added a couple pics of other handy changes. One is enabling music channel and the other is enabling minor quick settings (quick setting bar on notification panel).
Make sure your reboot after you save and exit.

Advanced Calling 1.0 or VoLTE will have to have a feature enabled on account for HD Voice, only 2 phones at launch will supoprt it, the G2 and S5. The feature isn't compatible with some select features such as ringback tones and city id.
Thats what I have read so far, without the feature on your account, turning it on your phone alone will not work. The feature code has to be added to your line of service first for it to work when it launches
That solves that
Maybe?

No data during calls?

Hi Guys,
I'm using the US Mate 9 with AT&T, a GSM provider. I noticed when I'm on a call either there is no data (Internet) available or very patchy with the screen on...
Wanted to ask you guys if this is normal and expected behavior?
Thanks!
I dont think is normal, I've seen icon change from 4g to 3g to H+ when I'm on calls but still able to open facebook, whatsapp or firefox while calling. I'm with Tmo tho.

It's because At&t doesn't allow VoLTE on the Mate 9 so when you make a call you get dropped to 4g or 3g speeds. T-Mobile allows VoLTE so data doesn't change due to a call. I run both sims in mine and it's why I keep my personal line on T-Mobile and use it's data. My At&t line is strictly for work calls.

Thanks for your responses guys... In all my years of using all these different phones on AT&T, I've never ever noticed this since the Verizon days. I didn't adjust anything with my At&t sim so I don't think you should need to either. Also this is a brand new sim and number so it was never in a different phone. I know on my Axon I had to put it in my iPhone first to get it working properly but not this phone. Are you in a good coverage area?

Both At&t and T-Mobile show 4gLTE icons but At&t's drops to 4g only while in a call, T-Mobiles stays 4gLTE which verifies VoLTE only works on T-Mobile.
I believe you're correct and the Chinese variant doesnt show LTE.

Guys, thanks for all your helpful responses! Just to close the loop on the issue of *NO DATA* during calls was fixed with the check box, checked in the attachment.
Although, as shared here, it's possible that it's H+ or 3G only service, not true LTE.
Thanks!
Alternative Solution
I had the same problem, I found out that this box was already checked on my phone, What fixed it for me was checking Mobile Network -> Access Point Names> selecting "ATT Phone"
I had initially selected "ATT Nextgenphone."

That depends on whether all the carriers can agree on what version of the RCS protocol to use.
AT&T is still using a pre-universal profile version of the RCS protocol.
AT&T is backing the newer universal profile version of RCS, but hasn't implemented it yet.
It would explain why they restrict their current version (Advanced Messaging and Video Call) to only work within their own network.

Never been able to use it, so I can't say.
Requires two AT&T customers with video capable phones (iPhones don't work as they don't support RCS at all).
My wife and daughter have iPhones, so we use Duo, which works great.
Not a fan of Skype and Facebook (which uses Skype on the back end). Crappy video compression when using cellular data.

Thing is I'm in Ghana atm. I'm on a plan where I can get free calls to other users over normal calls and same with video call without internet. Saves me data. Tried duo but horrible internet network doesn't help. Video calling Works fine with my note 3 but note 8 doesn't work. That's why I'm wondering if there's a way around this and if not can rooting solve the video calling feature?
Being Ghanian myself, i would say use What'sApp.

Do People Who Have the XZP & AT&T Get VoLTE in 2018??

Just wondering if anything's changed since last year. Does anyone who owns the XZP (either U.S. or int'l, but please SPECIFY in your reply) AND has AT&T (please only respond if yes to BOTH) get VoLTE on this phone? If so, did you have to do anything special or was it just available out of the box??

That really sux b/c 2 years ago when the X Performance came out, ppl on here who had AT&T said they were getting VoLTE I believe. But now no one who has AT&T is getting. Did AT&T start requiring certification for VoLTE the way T-Mobile does or something??! lol

I just set mine up, and can't find the option either. I just googled this problem and it appears the same thing happened on the Pixel 2. One guy said that he called Pixel support and they said that it isn't possible to set wifi calling to preferred. Apparently wifi calling will kick in when needed. I tried it just now, and it seems to be working.

I just set mine up, and can't find the option either. I just googled this problem and it appears the same thing happened on the Pixel 2. One guy said that he called Pixel support and they said that it isn't possible to set wifi calling to preferred. Apparently wifi calling will kick in when needed. Excellent to have Wifi Calling on Att finally on our pixels!:good:
I was wondering if wifi calling would work with at&t. If I remember right hd calling worked with the p2 with the right sim and getting it provisioned on your line but wifi calling didn't work. That only worked on phones from at&t. There were a couple places that I needed wifi calling and it came in handy. One was in a couple places at work with bad cell service and another was in a friend's home in the mountains of PA. wifi but no cell towers around. If wifi calling works at all I'll be glad.

So nothing happens when you tap Wi-Fi calling then. Bummer
Edit: we'll have to wait for custom ROMs

Yeah I'm surprised also. I always missed wifi calling on my Pixel 2 XL. I definitely works on my Pixel 3 xl on AT&T, you just can't set wifi calling to preferred.

Wifi calling does work, I tried a test call and it worked fine. I'm glad, because I live in an area where the cell signal is very weak.

That's great that it works. I would only need it when cell is unavailable. I sold my p2xl and had an s9+ for a while. That was a mistake. It was a good phone but I need my pixel back. Thanks for the info.
If I remember right that's how all the pixels are even on Verizon.
No option to make WiFi calling preferred.
At least it is working on Att because previous ones did not.
On my Pixel 2 XL, on TMobile, I have the option to set wifi calling to preferred. My 3 had not arrived to check yet. I do not have the setting in your screenshot for the emergency address.

What service do you have?
I know on Verizon you could never make it preferred, and Att never worked.
Unless Verizon changed after I changed carriers

This is what we see on AT&T...we don't have the option to select calling preference.
Guys!! This is a huge win for pixels and non at&t branded phone lovers!!! Never before in the history of at&t and Android has VoWiFi worked on non at&t branded phones.. I couldn't believe my stroke of good luck when I tested it today!! Thank you thank you Google. I had switched to TMobile because of this and carried at&t as secondary to fill in the gaps.. but i may just switch back.. so happy.. also, TMobile is the only American carrier that let's you prefer wifi calling over mobile.. so no dice there.. but hey, I'll take it.. and you can always enable airplane mode and force wifi calling.
Also, I tested tonight in a poor at&t coverage area and it seemed to switch between wifi and cellular calling just fine!!

Who is your carrier? Not at&t or Verizon I suspect.

If it does for you that's great...I tried it for 24 hrs. Had no signal my whole day while work in my office. So no go for me, even with it being a lot cheaper service.
I do hope they keep improving though, for competition purposes.

Yes they do! In so many ways and areas. And they have improved so much in the last year. I travel a lot and love watching coverage and I could name dozens and dozens of new towers. But they need 100s and 100s to compete.. let's hope the Sprint/tmo merger got through. It would be awesome to have reliable competition to dumb and dumber.
