What causes hard brick? - General Questions and Answers

I'm planning of installing a rom on my android device and made me thinking if i install a rom and something happens like hard brick... What causes hard bricked? Is there any way to fix it by not going to a technitian?
Sent from my SCH-I800 using xda app-developers app

Personally I think if it can be fixed it's not bricked. Bricking a phone is pretty much the end of the road for it I think. Others will correct me if I am wrong so best wait for more opinions.

Yes, you are right.
But: Often a so called "bricked device" isn't realy bricked, but the user isn't able to work it again. It depends only at the users knowledge, if he called it "bricked".
I've moded my first smartphone at beginning of this month, but if have modded many other devices before (many Fritz!Boxes, some PDAs, some Mediaplayer for TV, my TV, and many others), but i've never realy bricked a device, but somtimes got bootloops.

How do i keep my android device from getting brick when trying to install rom?
Sent from my SCH-I800 using xda app-developers app

If you want to be sure never to brick your device then just use it as it is. I think as long as you follow all the instructions and do research on it before doing it you should be ok. That's just my opinion though.

hi
hi..i have this problem aside from my stupidity that i flashed the wrong rom and yet flashed the wrong boot.img to my xperia go..after flashing the boot.img, my phone screen went black and nothing appears. i tried restarting but nothing happens. I tried to reflash with the original kernel if that's what it is called but i cannot go into fastboot. My computer doesn't recognize my phone anymore and the color of led light notification turns violet everytime i try fasbooting..
PLEASE help..
Tnx..

I think, you have succesfull bricked your phone!
It is possible that only your screen isn't responding, but it is in uploadmode. I would try it several times.

It's in Qcom USB download mode I think. Connect it to a windows pc, go to device manager and look for some 9008 device under com pkrts

But dont you think that is there something that i can do or try?
I am really worried
Not sure why you tried another phones rom on your phone. It is hard bricked because of the wrong bootloaders. Over at rootzwiki, I read that there was a chance to revive it from a hard brick. Take a look at it. Also, there was someone here that fixes hard bricks for a fee. Search hard brick and it's in one of the threads. the user name starts with a c.

Try these steps:
1) Open Odin, plug the usb cable into your computer but NOT the phone
2) Do a battery pull
3) put the battery back in
4) hold vol + and -
5) Plug the USB cable into your phone
See if Odin recognized your phone. You should see com# in a yellow box on the middle left of the screen. If you can get that far find an Odin rom for the phone in these forums and you might be lucky enough to be able to revive the phone.

(heimdall)-Advanced-How to debrick When flashing the wrong bootloaders

Hey ladies and gents Figured id teach you how to recover Boot loader bricks .. You will need windows heimdall and or linux
This is for people that flash said wrong boot loaders to the sgs4g and well traditional methoods do not work
YOU WILL NEED
* heimdall installed eather in linux or windows
* your dead phone the usb cable and the port your origonally installed the driver on as its the port that the driver looks for
* if you have the sgs4g drivers installed dont worry u will still have to install them for windows linux uses usblib 1.0 which is built in so no driver install is nessary
* for windows this is important install the hemidell driver goto the folder where u have it located goto the sub folder run the exe file and then choose all devices pick the samsung composit and hit install driver once thats done
*The correct Boot.bin and SBL.bin (for the sgs4g) Can be obtained out of the sgs4g BIBLE)
INSTRUCTIONS
1) On bricked device hope theres some battery left hold vol up down and power for about 1-2 mins you can try this with or without battery or with or without charge on battery resualts my very i only tried this on a phone with 80 percent battery.
2) Insert usb you may or may not hear a beep sound if so unplug then immedially plug back in you will get no screen but u will hear a faint beep like a dump dump in windows nothing for linux unless u have sounds for connect tunred on
sometimes u will see a quick flash of light on ur button bars any of this means the usb port init'd and ur good to go theres a small portion of the rom that normally does not get overwritten and usually causes usb init (seems that linux seems to init that first)
3) Open your command prompt, in windows you can go to start > run and type in cmd
4a) from your comand propmt navigate to your hemidall folder and type:
make sure the boot and sbl files are in the directory lol
Code:
heimdall flash --primary-boot boot.bin --secondary-boot sbl.bin
you wont see anything on screen but in 30 seconds or so your phone will boot up and wala
4b) if that command doesnt work for some reason
Code:
heimdall flash --primary-boot boot.bin --secondary-boot-backup sbl.bin
that will cause the phone to flash the backup copy that it retains to the device even if you do not hear a sound or a faint sound u can check in odin if you have windows before u will see it lights up yellow with no com port which is why u cant odin this
5) wala your phone will once again be alive (providing your flashing the right bootloaders this time)
i have tested this 4 times with my linux box bricked my moms phone (by flashing vibrant bootloaders over sgs 4g ones) and recoverted sucesssfually each time is the only reaon i posted this

no as i also own a riff box lol so there was no real threat to the phone
going to work on building a debrick Jig
So what happens if we don't hear a beep signaling that its connected to the computer, does that mean usb isn't init. and this won't work for me? I was actually trying to adapt this my my bricked vibrant
im not saying it wont thats just what happened on her phone so i was relating any and all info i could to be as descriptive as possable
Don't get me wrong I really appreciate what your doing and I love Redux XD best rom I've seen in a while, I seriously was happy tho to find that there might be another way out for my dead vibrant its what got me loving the Galaxy series in the first place.....but yea I don't think the usb is getting init'd on my end...maybe its cause of the gingerbread bootloaders thats in there maybe i'm not holding the right buttons...eh I don't know I'm bout to fire up my linux box and try it on there.....hmm just a quick question, so basically there HAD to be some kind of initial connection thru usb to do this right? And as you were saying that theres a part of the rom that dosen't usually get overwritten that allows the usb to be initiated...Is there any reason that this part *might* get overwritten? i.e using kies to update (yes I know noob mistake I got bored and like to mess around) I'm just trying to see what I'm doing wrong if anything or if I really do need to get a riff box

if you flashed the wrong bootloaders theres a small chance what yuo flashed can overwrite the area thats not overwritten I put up the windows directions in hopes that it would work under windows (as i tested this under linux)
it may very well just be linux only not that i want anyone to brick there devices lol... i know it works even if u dont hear a beep sound u can try doing the command line flash see if it takes just becuase it dont beep dont mean that its not being picked up
I see....Well I did flash the i9000 bootloaders...and it was working fine although the button sequence to get to download mode had changed, which I was fine with but then I really don't know what compelled me to use Kies to update it, but it hasn't turned back on since. And yea I did try to use the commands regardless the first command just said that it couldn't detect any compatible download mode device, and the second one seemed to go thru fine, but nothing happened on the phone's end
yea so I'm guessing that I fall into a different category of a hard brick no life at all oh wells...hey how much you charge to fix a dead boot on a vibrant RaverX3X

Please, get in your correct device section.
This issue was thoroughly discussed at another thread, and the only way users found to solve it was to deliver it to LG for a new board.
The sd format under CM7 issue, I mean.
I had this happen to me all the I apparently pressed reboot into bootloader by accident and my phone turned off and never turned back on. I was also running cyanogen mod. I tried everything but nothing worked it didn't even turn on so I just went to att and they sent me a new phone.

I dont think it is possible to brick the optimus 3d. The issue of not being able to reflash may be due to driver conflicts/combo of windows 7 etc.
Run device manager. Expand the ports and usb serial bus controllers
Take out battery of optimus 3d
hold down volume up and while holding up, insert cable.
There should be the omap 4430 popping up for a few seconds
Also during this process, the other usb drivers for the phone should be activated and displayed if they were previously installed. If not, then it should start searching for the drivers and update.
Insert battery
If there are issues with drivers updating, try another pc and install the lg drivers from scratch using windows xp.
Its not required to install the omap 4430 driver to flash a rom
You can then use the official lg recovery tool, enter your imei and it will download and install the stock rom
There are other methods on flashing using kdz files (a good tutorial is available somewhere in this forum) you would need to block the lg updater from checking however

Nah, this is the story.
Formatted sdcard (modded vold.fstab so CM see it as int. Mem). Work smoothly.
Going to bed, turn my phone off.
Stuck at shutdown animation (the "turning off phone" thing)
Removed the battery.
Tried powering on, none.
After a successful flash of FXP202.
But imho it's unstable, many random lockups. forcing me to remove the battery every 5 min or so.
and i dont realize this'll happen.
flashmode/fastboot is unaccessable.
so does Soft/Hard reset.
Combined charge time while dead is around 30h~
Longest charge time streak is 12h.
The anything that works is, when plugged in to PC, Device manager shows unknown device with HW id as (USB\VID_05C6&PID_9008).
Please, please help is needed! I don't want this new phone to be a paperweight. (BTW Warranty is void because dust slips under screen and weirdly, my warranty is out)

Try reinstating flashtool drivers. Then maybe fastboot will work. Otherwise hard brick.
You might still give for servicing but may have to pay service charges

Flashed wrong bootstack/modem, Pls HELP unbrick m8

Hi there,
I accidentally flashed (inside twrp) my HTC m8 with a bootstack/modem of a different phone (39a,LG G2). I'm pretty embarrassed about it, didn't mean to do it...I thought I was following instructions to install a new rom for the m8,except I was in the wrong forum..
details: in TWRP I flashed the wrong file, then went on to install a new rom and an error appeared: this is not vs980, this device is m8wl...so I thought, what? strange....
I turned off the phone (without realizing yet what happened. Sorry, stressful couple of weeks) and when I tried to turn it back on, it wouldn't. No matter how long I held the power button, or power and vol down. It will not go in download mode, neither detect it is plugged in to charger or a computer. Basically totally off without any response.
My question: is there any way possible to resuscitate this phone? please help me! any advice is appreciated.
before I had the m8 with s-off,rooted,with a 5.1 rom installed.
Thank you in advance!!!

thanks for the help so far guys!
Here's another funny thing. After a few attempts of plugging it in to a computer, it was recognized and it showed up in the device manager. The phones still did not turn on though. Additionally it seems that the phone is seen as an LG model (even though it's not), but I am not sure yet. I will get the HTC drivers installed, and if it doesn't work, I will try the LG drivers.
by the way, isn't there a way to flash the correct modem/bootstack with ones of those kits? i also remember from downloading the wrong LG G2 modem/bootstack that it didn't come with fastboot in it.
I will try a few things and report it back.
thanks again,

If your device doesn't light the power button but for a single flash when you try to power it on your board is toast.
If it shows up in device manager as a qusb bulk device the board is toast.

I got it to be recognized on a computer again, and windows installs a driver. The name of the device is forge hs-usb qdloader 9008.
I tried the all in one 2.0 kit, adb sideload, etc but anything I try I get a "device not found".
I think I am giving up unless someone finds a way to unbrick this kind of severe problem in the future. I also researched a bit on google, and there's a way to unbrick the LG G2 when it's seen as forge hs-usb qdloader 9008, which is known as a board unbrick. I found nothing for the HTC m8 though.
We tried all we could Thanks all for the help, it's very much appreciated! You guys are the best and this forum is awesome. I also ordered a new phone...and I will root it too

Might be completely wrong on this.
Wouldn't he be able to JTAG the appropriate boot image back onto the device?
Also, I know we had a hard brick recovery for the S3 back in the day. Worked consistently on full hard brick's.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166
Isn't it possible to dump a debrick image from a working device and follow the guide with that? I know the two devices are completely different, but the premise is the same.
My technical know-how isn't anywhere near your level, just thought I'd throw these ideas out there is case it hasn't been thought of yet. I'd be happy to put together a guide on how to do this if it can work on the M8.
