[Q] Carrier name in notifications - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, so, today I bought the Nexus 5 (32GB) and noticed a weird thing. When I pull down the notification, on the bottom, instead of showing the carrier name, it shows "not connected to the internet". However when I connect to any network (mobile or WiFi), it then shows the carrier name. In the notification panel with the switches (like WiFi, GPS and stuff,) it shows the correct carrier name

EDGE on/off

Hi,
I own this phone fo 2 weeks now. Based on my previous experience with smartphones and pda phones, there is one strange thing I do not understand.
Over the signal strength bars in the upper right corned of the screen, the symbol of an aerial is shown on my other devices if the gprs/edge is not active (e.g. mail reception/sending). On this device the "E" symbol is shown there continuously (in addition to the big "E" in the middle of the upper bar, which shows the edge availability according to the manual), and this means that the edge connection is active (see manual). However, it is not active, because on the Comms manager screen the data connection icon (No.6) is inactive. If I receive e-mails and use the edge function, this icon is active, ans it is possible to turn off the data connection. If I turn off the data connection after receiving my mails, the aerial appears in the corner for a short time (some minutes), but then changes back automatically to "E".
Does this mean that somehow there is an automatic data connection somehow? I can receive phone calls without any problems, and I use the official ROM.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
bf95
It simply means that you have EDGE access over GPRS access.

[Q] Sim card does not allow connection to this network

I am posting this as a new thread as my reply on a similar thread got lost or ignored and I would really appreciate inputs :
Randomly at times when I try to register on network manually (MTNL Dolphin 3G - Mumbai). Unrooted MB865 ver 2.3.6 & updated on 18th May 2012 to System Ver 55.28.37.MB865.AsiaRetail.en03. If I keep the setting as Automatic in Type of Network & Operator it functions fine fluctuating between Dolphin for local access & CellOne on roaming access in the same area based on cell tower connection the phone registers on alternating between "E" & "H" automatically based on cell mast direction proximity, however if I select 3G only and uncheck automatic for operator then the phone searches for signal for a very long time and fails to show any operator saying "no connection available" & sometimes when "Dolphin" network does appear and try to select manually get the error as "this sim card does not allow connection to this network". I did complain with the service provider and they were supposed to get back to me after checking in their switchboard exchange where I also provided them my SIM number in addition to my cellphone number(no response). Also as is case with poor service of all Indian cell network providers even in urban cities, also face random peculiar issue of call not being received inspite of signal available on the phone & network asking me to recheck the number I have dialled while placing outgoing calls though it is ok and signal is sufficient. Also "Network Speed Booster" app looks like a lot of bull (any other good apps??)
I needed to know using the secret Menu *#*#4636#*#* for 3G GSM service which kind of network I should ideally select for best results & does this setting override the regular menu network settings??
I get "G", "E", "H" randomly based on my locations but no "3G" or "H+" and further at times these icons are grey and sometimes blue and in either cases randomly
at different locations sometimes data throughput is not there as only one of the arrow shows active blinking. Any advise on the status based on colors and the blinking of the arrows?? Thanks!
PS _ This is what another user had posted (do you guys feel this is a phone defect?)
I wasn't able to solve this problem about an year. But did. And totally sure that it is Device's defect (in some cases it is a ROM deffect as in my case, in other - hardware. Smth like stack overflow issues at GSM controller or so). A year ago when I had face this "sim card does not allow connection... " problem, there are no google serch results on this keywords request. Any. To remove this message I was ought to reboot my device every time it appears. And I was thinking that it is normal behaviour for my device. But now there are lot of complainings at the web ( minimum 5 of Galaxy Tabs P1000, thousands of HTC Disire, few motorolla Deffy, 10 Galaxy Ace, few of Nexus S and so on), so I understand that I'm not alone, and problem is known. So I went to Samsungs Service and they confirmed that it is famous problem, have flashed my phone with some magic ROM (magic because it is official but does not available anywhere in the web, XDA or samsung sites! ) and now my phone works fine. Any other solutions like battery removing, *#*#4636#*#* sirvice menu, new sim-card, flashing variety of modems and roms, didn't helps me. This is not faulty sim. This is serious device's defect. Bring your phone to manufacturer and let them repair it or give your money back. This is their problem not your.

Connection type display bug on lock screen, other places

My phone network is Orange, and therefore EE, in the UK. (for non-Brits Orange is owned by EE so I should connect to the EE network). As you can see at the bottom of the attached image my Nexus 5 is showing a weird status message for the network I'm connected to. It says
Code:
EE - @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
That's 16 @'s!
These are the places I've seen it written like that:
Lock screen
Bottom of the notification drawer (when mobile data is turned on)
On the tile in the quick setting in the notif drawer.
I'm not sure what it's meant to be saying instead of the @'s. Maybe connection type? If I go into Settings>>About Phone>>Status It correctly says EE for Network and HSPA (or whatever else) for Mobile Network Type.
I should note that it is a brand new microsim and I followed my network's instructions for changing sim. I can receive and send calls, texts and data as normal and my old sim has been deactivated. So as far as I can tell this is a purely cosmetic bug, but it's friggen annoying to look at! My previous phone (Nexus S) never had anything weird like this.
Any ideas? Is it the phone or the microsim card? I've tried restarting it with and without the sim in

Question Wifi calling icon in notification bar

Do you know how to enable the wifi calling icon in notification bar?
Is there an adb command for that?
I have a US version U1 Ultra and I have 2 providers. a) ATT and b) Freedom (canada).
While the notification icon appears for Freedom in the notification bar and the number 2 is shown (esim), for ATT the phone
does not show any icon. Both wifi calling are active and there is no problem.
I can see the wifi calling only if I go to the dialer and see the wifi calling icon
I have done this experiment with multiple providers and phone (visible, Mint, ATT, Fido, Freedom)
It seems Samsung does not enable the wifi calling for all US companies but it does enable it for all Canadian providers
I don't understand the reason behind that. I do believe having the icon in the notification bar is way
better way to notify the user
I was wondering if there is any adb command to enable the notification for a certain provider
Does it maybe only show for the main sim in use
I'm on tmoble and I don't have a wifi calling icon on my notification bar, only way I know i'm on wifi calling is to pull down the notification panel and see if the network at the bottom says t-mobile wifi calling.
It shows only for me sim2 which is my Canadian provider. I have tried 3 US providers and it never shows any icon. I have to go to the dialer just to see the green call button with the wifi indicator.
It seems Samsung has kept hidden the icon on all US providers for wifi calling
Samsung said all unlocked s22 ultras have the icon disabled for us carriers.
trying to get a answer from tmobile to if ANYONE in the call center has a s22u and has seen this icon is like talking to a brick wall.
the only two options I see for US carriers are to make your call then look at the call screen to see if the wifi calling icon is there ON THE CALL SCREEN or pull the status bar down and look at the bottom of the notification panel.
I have a ticket in with samsung about this being unacceptable and tmobile points the finger at samsung, samsung says since its a branded phone its their fault, so they each want me to go back and forth..
Honestly, my note 9 still works fine and has better battery life. If I could unload this s22 to pay it off at this point I would. The only think I like is dark mode and the camera, the rest of the stuff works better on the note 9 running oreo.
edit - your dial button shows if you're on wifi calling or network calling. it will either be the phone or the wifi calling phone.
I guess thats how they figure people will know. shrug
Samsung unlocked phones do not display the wifi calling or volte icons for US carriers, they never have. The locked versions do.
I don't understand the reason behind that the wifi calling icon is not shown in the notification bar for US providers?
It is really useful to know that you are in wifi mode without pulling down the notification bar or going to the dialer.
Also as mentioned neither the Volte is shown. I know for sure European models show the VoLTE icon on top of the signal
but let's say here in US all or almost all providers are shutting down the 3G networks and VoLTE would be the default so I will not miss it since I know the phone it will be in VoLTE anyways

Question Roaming symbol

My carrier is Rogers (Canada) where I always have the HD (VoLTE) showing in the status bar and beside it the 4G or 5G symbol. When I use my phone in the United States it connects to AT&T as "preferred network", but the HD symbol disappears and although it says 5G, and I can connect to mobile data, I can't make voice calls. If I manually search for networks and choose T-Mobile, it connects and although I still don't get the HD symbol, I can place voice calls successfully. In place of the HD symbol I get either a small "R" above the signal bars, or a large R inside a circle in the status bar. I assume I am placing my voice calls over VoLTE, because all of the American carriers have shut down their 3G networks. Does anybody know why the HD symbol doesn't appear when the roaming symbol does, and also what is the difference between the two types of roaming symbols that I'm getting?
