looking for Dev phone SCH-R740C Samsung Galaxy Discover - General Questions and Answers

Hello all,
I'm looking for a Dev phone, something that can be broke for a couple of days while I'm trying to create custom roms/firmwares etc, and something that won't leave me without a phone if I brick it. If anyone is willing to donate a SCH-R740 to a rookie developer I will do my best to get CyanogenMod 9 and 10 ported to this device, as well as maybe a few custom firmwares.
I won't make promises, but I've been having some success, I've successfully ported CWM with pre-built kernel to the device, so there is a bit of a glimmer of hope.
If your willing to donate a phone to this my project please send me a private message.

Cool, before you agree to donate if you can get to bootloader you should be able to derrick via odin flash

Sorry, just re-read my reply, I'd be more than happy to accept a softbricked phone as a donation as a dev phone, I would like to let you know however, that since you can get into the boot loader there are enough resources currently available that you should be able to de-brick the phone yourself if you wished to press it back into service...

Hello CowboyEnvy:
Not sure if you still need this model phone for a donation but I happen to have one that is already rooted with ckockwork mod and super su installed. Just has a stock rom with a little trimming on the programs that originally came with it. All I can say is that you pay the cost to get it to you and its yours, otherwise, being homeless and no work, the best I can offer you.

Thread closed, XDA is not a place to "beg" for Dev Phones...

[Q] Help with post rooting

Hello everyone,
im am new here and i need some help. I just rooted my samsung captivate and i honestly have no idea what to do from here. I wanted to make it all cool and stuff but i have no idea what i am doing. Help would be appreciated.
thanks ryan
Install Rom Manager and flash CWM Recovery and then pick a custom rom of your choice.
I suggest that you do plenty of reading in the forums, especially the stickies, before you do anything. It's best to have a good working knowledge before you get yourself into trouble.
+1 for reading
I would not flash anything till you know:
The build number of your phone
What odin is
What clockwork recovery is
What three button combo is
What download mode is

Other than installing ROM Manager, using Bay_wolf's AIO software will greatly reduce the human error involved with flashing. Check it out as well. Personally I haven't found ROM Manager to be particularly useful, but that's probably because I'm on Serendipity.

I must agree with Wonner. I'm somewhat new to this (although I have some amateur developing background) and reading before doing anything would've saved me alot of trouble. I managed to fix just about everything with stickies!
My advice: Be patient and take time to really learn about what you're doing before anything! Oh and also, BACKUP
If you just want "to make it all cool and stuff" I would play around with different launchers until you reading enough about flashing and how to unbrick your phone. You could end up in a world of hurt if you don't know what your doing.
Then when you feel like you know what you are doing and are ready to flash your first rom, read some more. Also learn how to back up your phone. Learn about build numbers and how your phone enters recovery mode.
"Knowledge is power" - Lawrence Fishburne (Higher Learning)
Theres apps for different types of launchers...
But if your looking into roms. As stated above know and make sure your phone has the 3 button recovery and download mode. If not then its smart to invest in a pre-made jig from ebay or make your own just in case. It's really hard to hardbrick these phones so dont be to scared.

Root Help

Hey everyone.
Im generally pretty savvy with androids. I rooted and S-offed my HTC Desire, I had a nexus S for a bit until it got ran over... Now im stuck with this Galaxy S 4G, which has been nothing but headaches because for some reason... this thing is impossible to root to me. Ive tried Hemidall, Super1clicks, Odin etc..
Can someone please just point me in the direction of rooting this POS? Im hoping that once its rooted and running stock, I wont hate this thing as much... because so far, Its a horrible purchase.
I just need someone to post a link to where I need to be. Ive searched.. and im absolutely lost. Even the Rootz wiki was useless to me.
Thanks.

Read that then understand what bhundven means by DONT FLASH BOOTLOADERS!!
You can use the heimdall one clicks he created to get root access and then flash any rom that DOESNT HAVE BOOTLOADERS INCLUDED. That means do not use gremlin remover period. Once you get rooted make a backup and keep it stored in as many places as possible. If you flash the ics variants you will have to use the stock kj6 HOC and then need to flash the HOC for antonx kernel to get root back. At that point you can flash your nandroid or whatever rom you want. AGAIN AS LONG AS IT DOESNT HAVE BOOTLOADERS included.

I have no idea what youre talking about. Sorry
I used the Hemidall, and only got an unrooted Tmobile rom.. Im not sure where exactly i get root from this
Meh, forget it... im selling this phone. There is no convincing me to ever buy anything from Sammy again unless its a Nexus line.
HTC or Nexus forever.
Thanks guys
Reading is hard
"Can I get step by step directions please?"
Sure, here you are!
"What?! Your not going to remotely root my phone for me? F this place"
Good luck sir, you have the patience of a saint and the drive of a tiger!
OK let's be honest you gave up kinda quick.......
The forum that eollie linked you to was a forum talking about the phone that you bought, which is an apparent offshoot of the t-959v and according to what Masonite found out, "our" roms work on the t-959w but you cannot flash the bootloaders.
Here is the one click link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498 just boot into download mode and use this but absolutely don't flash bootloaders and it should be OK, no promises.
Eollie was right for linking you there, all the info you needed about your model phone was on that forum, that one click is in the dev sticky which everybody should read.
There has been a flood of people not researching a little bit first before posting and that's why people flamed you but you should not give up, its a good phone and our devs are dedicated and have put in a lot of time on this model, you should be happy your phone can even support all the great roms that are available.
I'm not being mean but seriously, come on, all the info is there, no need to get mad.
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using xda premium
Edit: or Google search how to use heimdall if your confused, I learn off a damn YouTube video..........
Our devs didn't create heimdall and don't support it but it is a great program and the dev has to build the individual one click for the phone, we should be happy to have it that easily available.

You'll need to flash one of the back to stock files that you got linked to in that thread which will put you on stock GB with no root. DO NOT FLASH THE BOOTLOADERS. You'll very likely brick if you do.
After this download the AntonX kernel from bhundven's one click thread and flash that. That will give you a custom kernel with CWM built in and root.
Needless to say, this is all for the SGH-T959V which theoretically should work on the SGH-T959W. As you'll read any disclaimer on this forum, you're resposible for anything you flash and the damage that may occur to your device.
Thanks for that fb I forgot a few steps if he wants to be on mtd roms, I assumed he could read from that point............ but your right for knowing better

Thank you very much, and I'm sorry for getting angry. I've had this phone for almost 4 months now, and haven't been able to do anything with it. Quite frustrating.
So, I currently have the Tmobile ROM on my phone, so I'm halfway there it appears!
I'm going to download the other ROM as soon as I get home.
Thanks so much! Next up.. Learning to flash with Odin, and not ROM manager.
It seemed like everything I tried wasn't working with 2.3.6. Superoneclick etc.
I was waiting for a new exploit, but it never came. I tried YouTube tutorials, text directions.. Everything would fail, or give me "read only" errors. I feared bricking, so I stopped.. But I searched the forum and came across the thread he linked me to, but it said no bootloaders, and all the ones I saw had bootloaders. Wasn't until tonight that I noticed it's a 2 part flash process, with the second being the bootloaders.
I think I started this thread at 3am.
Lesson learned.
In heimdall, you can click a little box that says "flash bootloaders" to toggle flashing them on and off! .... or maybe it was odin? I can't remember... been a while since I used them!
After being away for the weekend, I came home, and BAM... fully rooted. Amazing! and FINALLY!!!
Thanks everyone for your help...
I just have another issue.
I wanna flash this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305145
It says its CWM.. but there is a huge disclaimer that we shouldn't use ROM Manager on the development page, which is a bit confusing. Since this ROM isnt Odin flashable... what do i do?
Thanks again.
So I was confused about this when I first started. I'm not at my computer but I can help. In order to flash Roms via cmw you have to turn off your phone hold both volume rockers on the phone then hold the power button and hold till you get into cwm recovery. That will get you into cmw recovery mode. Then wipe data factory rest, from there go back to the main menu and select the install zip from sd card and find the zip file you want to flash and select it and install. Should be good to go.

[Q] Samsung Exhilarate stock tar file.

I heard that shabby was working on it but the thread they were posting in just stalled out, So has anyone heard any news of a stock tar file for Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate being worked on?

Hi Nanition:
As j3r3goss stated, Shabby needs someone to help out. We need an unrooted phone so that we can grab the original recovery that comes on the phone. If you have an unrooted exhilarate and can donate some time/effort, Shabby would be the best person to contact. You can reach him by going to http://webchat.irondust.net/?channels=hitsquad Just type in his name (Shabbypenguin) and if he's lurking he'll respond.
Shabby had someone volunteer, but he said it didn't work out (no details as to why or what happened).

stock tar
Here's what I used to get the stock OS back, minus recovery of course. The tar contains the system and boot and can be pushed via Odin. For some reason when I had the radio files in the tar it would fail in Odin so I found a script to update those via CWM. I'm not sure what all needs to be done but since mine was extremely messed up I pushed the system tar via Odin then booted into CWM Recovery flashed the radio.zip then performed factory reset x3, format cache x3, format dalvik cache x3 and fixed permissions. It took a bit but booted just and I have had no issues.
You will need to perform a touch key fw update after you boot recovery, but everything else appears to be fully functional. We still need to get some assistance in getting the boot.img rooted so that we can get a dump of the stock recovery.img.
Hope this helps.
Obviously these are to be used at your own risk.

I am about to start working on a custom System ROM for this phone. What Apps should be included, what apps should be removed (AT&T crapware of course - but what else)?
I want to make a basic one with just a few key apps, and a more advance one for the ultimate tweaker/hacker.
All suggestions (but please be polite) are welcome!
We also still don't have the original restore.img - so if you want to help w/ that, let me know, I may have an angle that we can get it with.

Right now the biggest things for me are bloat and launcher. Everything AT&T needs to go. Is there a way to seperate Google apps or do they pretty much install together? Ther are way to many Google apps that I don't use or ever care to use. Not a big fan of the TW so I'm using ADW, but that can be easily changed by the user. One thing I have been trying to find is support for volume rocker music controls. I use this thing for for music all the time and hate having to skip tracks from the screen.

I take absolutely no credit for this, I merely tried it and it does infact work for our phone as well. I was at 42 BTW.

I don't know if Shabby needs a phone or not. I personally, haven't heard from Shabby since a couple of weeks ago.
You can always go to his site and PM him and make the offer.
I was actually hoping my wife would buy one of these, and I was going to try to grab the stock restore, but she opted for a Galaxy S II SkyRocket instead (larger screen, more memory, thinner, etc. - but she did like that my phone is smaller (edge-to-edge)).
Anyway, we're pretty much stuck at the moment. We don't have the original restore, and we can't seem to get it.
I think I know what needs to be done, but I'd have to consult w/ Shabby and j3r3. If you're willing to try yourself, you need to get the rooted ROM, and get it installed on your phone. Then, as I understand it, you need to adb the phone and dd a restore.img. Once we have that, we can then install custom ROMs and revert back to stock if needed.
Other than that, we have full root, and I have been able to uninstall AT&T crapware, Samsung Crapware, and also most of the other system stuff that isn't needed/wanted.
The next step is, as I find time, to create a minimal ROM that has only what is necessary for the phone to function. There will be a couple of other apps (to verify root, and allow you access to all files and system settings), but other than that - that'll be it.
Let me know if you think you'd be willing to be a guinea pig on this - and you should let j3r3 and shabby know as well (if shabby is still interested).

GHORR: Here's the deal: As of right now, there is no way to unlock your phone for use with other carriers unless you can convince AT&T to send you the unlock code. To do that (I know this from experience), you'll need to be able to explain why you want it unlocked to them. Read this thread for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812976
I know that doesn't help. However, you can also do a search for "SIM Unlock" - there are some phones that have had their system files hacked and you might be able to unlock it that way. Note, I am in no way responsible for anything that happens to your phone. This is at your own risk.
Good luck

I apologize, my previous advice was generic for any phone. After looking in to your model I did not see any custom recoveries available for it, nor have I found anyone claiming to have a custom recovery running.
Can you post a link to the recovery that you flashed? Obviously it was not from the ClockworkMod site: clockworkmod.com/rommanager as there is no official recovery for your model. Of course, you might have found an unofficial testing version somewhere else. If so let me know and I will help you look into reflashing it.

I could not find any. To my knowledge, it is not possible to flash anything but stock firmware to your phone, nor are there any recoveries aside from the one already on it.
Your phone is not too old, so someone might still develop a custom recovery and eventually 3rd party ROMs. However, it is worth noting that might never happen. If you wish to flash ROMs and such, it is generally a good idea to purchase a more popular device. More users = more devs = more customizations made.

You are welcome. Does it claim to be incompatible with your device? It might not be able to physically work on your chipset, which means it will not work on your phone unless the devs release an update. If you would like to purchase it anyways just to try it out, you can download a modified Play Store APK that removes device/region restrictions. I have not used such an APK, so I cannot help much beyond linking you to the last one I saw featured here on XDA. That is a pretty old Play Store, so you might Google around to see if you can find a newer version like version 4.x or so. While I have not had much success with the application personally, Lucky Patcher might be able to remove the region/device checks from your current Play Store. If none of those options work, the only route left is illegitimate and not spoken of here.
I have the same E455 and I just want to enter that stock recovery. how do I do that?
I've tried every key combination possible . it just wont enter recovery.
LG site is no help at all about this. just look at the other south Korean phone maker.
the difference is day and night. everything is available for sammy devices . oh,well

Hey Axims,
I`m also ended up on a dead end for this problem.
But yesterday i accidentally switched on my mobile by holding volume UP + quick access button + Power Button. I`m entered into recovery mode but i cant use that mode its only allows LG service representatives to use. Do u know anything about it??????...
It would gives us a clue to enter into our recovery...
If u know anything about it please reply......,
Thanking you.
Hmm, I'm becoming more and more suspicious that it's just a mock screen and not a real recovery.
otherwise, why we can't enter it?
why lg is so tight lipped about it?
some senior member here tried couple of days helping me make a cwm for it. he was always
complaining about the odd size of boot.img and recovery.img that something is not right there.
maybe he's right and lg screwed us . who knows

How does a non-techy get Cyanogenmod installed on a Samsung Galaxy Ace 3?

Apologies if this is not really the place for this question but I don't know where else to go for an answer. I have just purchased a Z1 after years of putting up with Samsung bloatware etc and it has changed my life! I would like to transform my wife's phone experience as well. She can only really use a small phone and has been happy with her Ace 3 until recently, when it started to get slow and erratic. In desperation she has bought an iPhone 5 but this has not been a happy experience at all! I cannot find any new small Android phones that come with Cyanogen pre-installed so I am wondering if we can get it installed on her old Ace 3. From the discussions in this forum I guess this can be done but, not having any technical training in this subject, I really dont understand much of what is being said. I have no idea how to go about this.
So is there either a very simple manual on what to do or else a UK-based expert who can do this for me (for a fee, obviously)?
you can look from the android development section. but, it may vary to your phone model. there is a instructions to on how to install a cyanogenmod os on your ace 3. at least you are familliar with custom recoveries like cwm or twrp, you should install it first on your phone via odin in your pc.
You guys know so much
Hi, PAPlinskie, and thanks so much for getting back to me. I really appreciate it. I have looked at the page you refer to and I just don't understand it! (I don't know what cwm or twrp or Odin are) I guess you guys don't realise just how much you know. I suspect that the answer to my question is probably that there isn't an absolute layman's guide so I will probably have to look for someone to do it for me. Thanks for trying anyway.

At first I didn't want to flash Custom ROM's on my phone for fear of breaking it... But All I had to do was just follow instructions to the "T" and I had no hiccups...
Okay, so lemme clear some things up for you.
Odin is an Application which you run on a Windows machine, (Your PC). It serves as a bridge to allow you to put custom software such as custom recoveries and allows you to fix a broken device (If the software is the problem)
TWRP & CWM are both custom recoveries. You can think of the stock recovery mode in Android like Safe Mode in Windows, It allows you to Wipe your entire phone or perform other recovery options if you are unable to access the phone when you turn it on. A custom recovery allows all these functions, but on top of that, allows you to flash (install) files to your phone, Like your CyanogenMod.
In a nutshell, if you want CyanogenMod on your Ace 3, you will have to:
1. Install drivers on your PC so that it recognises your phone
2. Using ODIN, flash a custom Recovery
3. Download a CyanogenMod port found here on the forums.
4. Install (Flash) it in your Custom recovery.
The guides here on XDA are really good, all you have to do is do your homework, read, understand and you will have no problems.
Good Luck with your quest on Custom ROMS:good:

I have taken the coward's way out. I went into my local neighbourhood PC techie shop and asked if they knew of a reliable local phone engineer who could install Cyanogen for me. The boss' assistant said he does that sort of thing for a hobby and was happy to do it for me in return for a donation to his drone fund! He seems to made a cracking job of it and my wife is overjoyed to have her Ace back in a turbo-charged state.
Many thanks for your help and I am only sorry I was not brave enough to act on it.

It's okay. We all know how daunting these things can be because you don't want to brick your device.
Maybe in the future you will be able to try it yourself.
