Rooted but hit the hotspot cap - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was operating under the assumption that I'd be immune to the 2.5gb hotspot bandwidth cap if i were rooted and using FoxFi as my tethering method. Is there a way to use unlimited tether on TMO without paying the piper?
N5/Rooted/Clockwork Mod Recovery/Factory ROM

Nope.

all rooting does is give you superuser access, it doesnt give you any special powers. and no matter what you use to tether, the data still comes from your provider. your provider knows your device, and lets it access their network. when you access their network, they know everything that you are doing on it.

But this doesn't actually allow you to tether without the data being counted, does it? I thought it was a workaround for tethering not working at all, which I had to use in the past.

the original post of this thread asked for a way to go past his data cap and my reply was for that. it will most probably let him go over 2.5G cap with the use of a user agent switcher.
for your question,But this doesn't actually allow you to tether without the data being counted, does it? yes and no.
yes because it lets you go past your cap
no because simms22 is right. anytime they want, they can look up your data use and crack down

[Q] Best way to use my phone to get my laptop onto the Internet?

I'm going on a road trip and want to use my Skyrocket to give Internet access to my Dell Mini laptop. So I called AT&T to ask how that could be done. I was willing to pay whatever fee's they required.
But they told me the only way to do it is for me to relinquish my current unlimited-data play. Then they would put me on a new plan that allows "tethering".
But I could never go back to my unlimited-data plan afterwards.
WTF?
So I'm rooted & running SkyICS ROM.
What is the best way for me to get my laptop onto the Internet using my AT&T cell data service? I just need it for a couple weeks.

Use the hotspot or usb tether on your phone
You will be prevented from using USB tether or WiFi tether if you don't have a tethering plan from AT&T. Since you are rooted, freezing programs is possible (using Titanium Backup, or others). Freezing a certain program that manages tethering (which I will leave nameless so that I am not implicated in violating AT&Ts rules ).
I have used this method myself, and tried the WiFi tethering. It works, but I might not recommended using it excessively. AT&T apparently can tell by looking at the data if you are tethering, and the more you do it, the more likely they will check. But for brief usage, it has worked well, and I haven't received any of the nasty-gram texts. The risk, of course, is that they will automatically change you over to a tiered data plan with tethering.

The rom he is on may have already enabled tethering as well, as most roms do this. But yes, when I was stock rooted I froze the "nameless thing" as well.
I pulled open Titanium backup and don't see the tethermanager in the list so I can freeze it?
I don't want USB tethering, just wireless.

It's probably already baked into your rom.
Open wireless and network/ tethering portable and hotspot /portable wifi hotspot settings/ and then tick the box PORTABLE WI-FI HOTSPOT. See if it works for ya
I use open garden to tether.

The only way is to tether less than your cap or setting a limit on your phone. No magical bandwidth.
I've read a few things about PDANET not counting towards your data limit.

I think you're misunderstanding. It hides you from "tethering" supposedly, but it doesn't spoof your data to show you're not using it. What I mean is, you're still using the data, it will just show as being used from your phone normally, opposed to tethering. "Supposedly"
I totally understand now, thank you for clearing that up.

Hotspot and unlimited data

Been reading exhaustively about Verizon unlimited data plans and have a few questions for the smart people here.
1. Is it true that vzn cannot block us from free tethering via a custom rom?
2. Is there a way for me to unknowingly trip some kind of alarm by accessing the hotspot?
3. If tethering is NOT hacked in a rom, what happens? Will i get a signup page or will the hotpot just not work?
Any thoughts appreciated. I'm weary about trying to figure this out. Thanks in advance!

I've tethered through my S4 gigabytes of days. Others who run their home's internet and entertainment through their phone have racked up hundreds of gigabytes with no word from VZW. I've never been on stock, so I don't know how to tether on a ROM that doesn't have it built in. Just don't use the VZW app for it.

A) true, they cannot block the end user...u could use your sim in a midi/hotspot if you wanted
2. Is there a way for me to unknowingly trip some kind of alarm by accessing the hotspot?
A) I have tethered 23-40 GB per month since 4g came out...never a warning or questions.
3. If tethering is NOT hacked in a rom, what happens? Will i get a signup page or will the hotpot just not work?
A) yes if not use g a ROM an app lime PDA net or foxfi used to work, but to my knowledge not on kitkat

Coming from working for Verizon corporate, they don't care unless you're doing an obscene amount of data. If you're doing 100gb a month, expect to get a letter warning you to stop. They could also throttle you. In other words, don't be so ignorant to think you could get away with it indefinitely .
As for the hack portion of your question, it will either work or not. You don't need to worry about getting charged if you didn't sign up online, in store, or over the phone with old big red.

I am not entirely sure of the legality of using ROMs to sidestep Verizon's tethering restrictions (with unlimited data), but seeing as how no one (to my knowledge) has had their service terminated due to tethering, I assume it isn't something Verizon wishes to pursue. If I recall correctly, Verizon's recent purchase of the 700 Mhz C Block spectrum came with the clause that Verizon could not "deny, limit, or restrict the ability of their customers to use the devices and applications of their choice on the licensee's C Block network." Of course, Verizon responded to this settlement by allowing tethering, but chose to charge the end user for tethering THROUGH THEIR SPECIFIC APP, MOBILE HOTSPOT. Good old Verizon, eh? This article does a good job of expanding on Verizon and tethering plans, however it does list that users with unlimited data "must" pay for a subscription service. However, as stated above, I don't know of anyone to get their service terminated for tethering (as I don't think there is any concrete way to prove that the data you are using is through your phone or another device, assuming you use a modified Mobile Hotspot or third party tethering app), so this exists as a gray area which Verizon doesn't seem to be acting on. If anyone here has more knowledge on this, or is able to correct me on anything above or below, that would be much appreciated; I too would like to be as up to date on all of this (like the OP), so any and all information is welcomed.

Actually, if you follow the instructions in this thread you can enable tethering in Verizon's native Mobile Hotspot app. While this method is free, it still uses your data, so unless you have copious gigabytes of data (or unlimited data) I would be careful here.

If you have not "hacked" your Mobile Hotspot app to support free tethering (as shown above), then it will simply prompt you to sign up for a Mobile Hotspot subscription (which you can deny). If you are using a third party app, and are still unable to enable tethering, the app will simply not work. You will not get charged for a Hotspot subscription, nor will you be automatically enrolled. One thing to be careful of here is the MyVerizon app. Even though it has nothing to do directly with mobile data tethering, I suspect recent changes to it are taking a very shady approach (thread 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) of figuring out who may be tethering. After its most recent update, it has been requesting Superuser access from users who are rooted, and my best guess is Verizon is trying to collect data on which users have modified their phones/could be tethering. I realize I may just be grasping at straws here, but perhaps Verizon has found some definitive way to link tethering to having root access, and in the future may act upon this. I know that eventually Verizon will try to kick all users off of unlimited data plans, and since technically we are bound by our contracts signed when we first got unlimited data (which prevented tethering without a subscription), they could use this as leverage to force us onto tiered plans.
Thanks man! Learned a ton from you and the other posters. Thanks for the response and for pointing out the superuser issue. I blindly agreed to give them superuser access. Going to rethink that.

Sadly enough, it doesn't matter if you accepted the Superuser request or not, once MyVerizon prompts you for access, it most likely is noted in the app (that you have root access) and then sent to some Verizon database to be added to your “file"...

FoxFi, any charges?

Quick question-
I recently went back to stock rooted rom from Alliance because my WiFi went out and I was not able to get it back on anything other then stock.
Unfortunately that means I lost my WiFi tethering. I found FoxFi to work, I just wanted to make sure this didn't incur any extra charges and worked like the in app did for alliance.
I have unlimited data.
Thank you,

I'm in the same boat as you with unlimited. Been using FoxFi without any issues for years now. No extra charges.
Just don't torr 500GB of movies and get red flagged. Any illegal down loading will void the TOS agreement. They will send u a letter.
On a side note, I did ask a friend who knows a guy that works for big red. He said they can see and detect FoxFi traffic in the data packets. Meaning, ya they have programs in place that detect tethering with excessive data usage. So some peps do heavy tethering and nothing happens and verizon knows.
The FCC made a ruling against Verizon in 2012 and is worth reading
The Right to Tether: What the Verizon/FCC Settlement Means to You
and Federal Communications Commission
The fine print is...Verizon's stance. Current customers with grandfathered unlimited data plans still have to pay. Unfortunately, if you want to tether with your unlimited plan, you have to either upgrade your plan to one of the new, Share Everything plans (which include tethering), or pony up $20/mo for Verizon's "Mobile Broadband Connect" service. You can still tether off the books and hope you don't get caught, but if they catch you, Verizon will either sign you up for Mobile Broadband Connect, put you on a Share Everything plan, or terminate your contract.
Basically verizon lost the fight and got spanked / hand slapped. They could go after you under the FCC agreement but their are no reports that has happened.
Just keep your tethering under 30gigs and you be fine.
Okay cool. Thanks for the reply. I Dont plan on using 30gigs anyway. Probably only around 10/month for the next 3 months. Need my laptop and hotel internet is slow as hell.

Its all on your end. Foxfi has been working on 4.3 for almost as long as its been out. Are you using a rom with safestrap? If so did you install the kernel modules? Tether apps need WiFi to work and if your on a 4.3 ROM without modules WiFi won't work.

Well you can just install/reinstall it by downloading a busybox installer from the play store. It doesn't matter because I just remembered you don't need root for foxfi anymore. hope you figure it out.
Foxfi is working fine on 4.3 or 4.4kitkat, you need to enable lock screen and using pin code, it will ask you to install a trust cert and that's it. If you have root, just use wifi tether router app (very clean an simple tethering app). I'm using both and they both working fine.

Just did a speedtest on this with the Boost Varient got 1.06 Mb/s download and 0.39 Mb/s upload.
Nothing to scream at, but It lets me tether on boost which is great especially once I have 7GB of data

I've used pdanet for many years which includes usb and wifi tether. I regularly use 500+gb a month without being throttled. The program hides tether usage 100% but doesn't hide overall usage so i recommend the $60 plan. Its available in the playstore or from the developers website @ junefabrics.

I went through hours of research, tried to use adb she'll to change tether dun required to 0, changed to ipv4, added dun In apn settings, went through a VPN and NOTHING Works. I'm about to go back to 5.0.1 to get unthrottled Hotspot, after my 5 gb it goes down to 100kb or less I'm sick of it. I don't know how else to get full unthrottled Hotspot. Maybe the custom rom will get me around the Hotspot throttling and I feel as if I'm throttled on data even though I'm on the unlimited plan on metro, maybe the custom rom will get me around that too. Either way any advice? Thanks in advance

Pdanet works perfectly. just create a new access point and make it identical to the metro one expect change the apn protocol to ipv4. Pdanet works with or without root and with custom roms. It hides all tether usage usb and wifi 100% but whatever data is used will count towards your total allotment if not on the $60 unlimited plan. If you use usb tethering select hide tether usage level 1. Dont enable the tether or hotspot options from your phones settings do everything through pdanet.
I regularly use well over 500gb a month between usb and wifi and have never been throttled or warned etc. Ive used pdanet since 2006 through sprint, boost, att and metro using about every phone you could imagine and it always worked flawlessly.
