Attempting to partition sd card with ext4 -a process I completed multiple times successfully on a Nexus One, the process appeared to complete but now the phone will not mount the sd card. I've tried a wipe/reset, to no avail. I can still access and partition the sd card through adb, but the phone cannot mount it to format/partition, restore from recovery, partition sd-card from within ClockWork Recovery, nothing. I've re-partitioned the sd card through adb, which indicated a successful completion, but the phone still refuses to mount the sd card. If this weren't a Nexus S with it's cursed internal sd-card I would simply swap out the sd card with another or format it externally like all the google topics I pull up on the subject suggest.
Is this fixable or has the fused sd-card scenario become a liability?
Common Error messages:
Can't mount /sdcard
Can't mount /sdcard/.android_secure
Phone: Nexus S
Recovery Img: ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.2.4
Rom: CM 7.0.3 (now wiped, cannot put back on since sd card won't mount)
fstab:
/dev/block/mtdblock4 /cache yaffs2 rw
/dev/block/platform/s3c-sdhci.0/by-name/userdata /data ext4 rw
/dev/block/platform/s3c-sdhci.0/by-name/system /system ext4 rw
/dev/block/platform/s3c-sdhci.0/by-name/media /sdcard vfat rw
Can mount everything except the last one, /sdcard.
I've attempted all: wipe/reset, format using clockwork, partition using clockwork, partition using adb, changing fstab, etc etc.
All topics I've found on the net end up being resolved by taking out the sd-card and formatting externally or using different card. i've had a N1 for well over a year and done far worse without problems, this phone seems to be very fragile for a 'developer' phone.

Are you able to go with ADB through the directories?
and yeah, false Section! Q&A would be better
I am having the same issue. I actually just got my phone back from Samsung support (which is real ****ty) because the SD card started having I/O issues.
According to the ticket information they replaced the PCB.
Anyway, I immediately installed Clockwork recovery and transferred the latest Blandroid rom to the root of the SD card. No matter what I do I cannot mount the SD card from the recovery menu or format it from the recovery menu. Mounting USB storage works fine, though.
Hiya I got the same problem
Any salutation yet ?
Yeah. Don't format the internal storage with clockworkmod etc.
I have that issue I cant even open phone now

1.power off...on it back...test it
2.plug your usb cable, boot into recovery..will heard usb sound from your PC, if does not work, try several times plug the usb untill you get usb sound...unplug, then reboot...
3.fresh install ROM...
Yeah, don't mess with the internal memory. I semi-bricked a Droid Incredible one time doing that. It ended up making all the internal partitions FAT. Took me hours to fix it. Be careful. I am afraid to even do it on my crespo4g. When I mount it in gparted running Linux Mint, the internal sd card showed up as not partitioned. I didn't even think about trying to partition it thinking back on the Incredible.
A solution, at least, for flashing/updating roms
Just happened to me, using CM9 after enabling the encryption I can't access the /data /sdcard paths. It would be nice to be able to read them but for me the biggest problem was how to update to the latest CM9 nighty.
In the end I've tricked the clockwork recovery to think the cache partition is the sdcard. I'll post the method in case someone find it useful.
1. Tranfer the update to the cache partition.
- Normally big enough, wipe it from the cwm if there is not enough space
adb push update-cm-9-20120305-NIGHTLY-crespo-signed.zip /cache/update.zip
2. Log into the phone and mount cache to sdcard.
adb shell
mount /dev/block/mtdblock4 /sdcard
3. Go into the cwm option to flash the uploaded package, it wont give you the mount error as we already mounted /sdcard
4. After the update log again and clear the update package, and unmount /sdcard
adb shell
rm /cache/update.zip
umount /sdcard
As long as you don't have to wipe you can continue updating and using your encrypted storage without much trouble
Help, internal storage not showing
Hi,
I wanted to go back from CM9 to Stock rom, but now I did something wrong (don't know what exactly) and my device is still on CM, but unable to access the internal storage. I cannot even take pictures or access it through CWM.
Any thoughts?

I have had no luck using multiple methods to partition sd card with Nexus S. Each time I can view the modified fat32 partition from windows, add files etc, but cannot be recognised from within CWM recovery.
Left me unable to reflash roms etc.
The only thing which has worked for me is to use mini tool for windows and mount usb storage from recovery. Do a refresh from mini tool and it should come up in the list of drives. delete the partition(s) you find there (not your notebook ones of course), and reformat it as fat 32.
CWM>Advanced>Reboot recovery, move over your rom to the sd card, then try to find it in CWM, should now show up :fingers-crossed:
As I was getting low on my LG-P500 phone, I tried looking for some app2sd solution, doing the following steps:
- Backup all SD card content to PC
- Boot into recovery (CWM5.0.2.7)
- From recovery, create sd-ext partition
- From recovery, format the new partition
- From recovery, mount usb device, restore all SD card content from PC.
- Reboot device, installed link2sd and managed to link applications to sd.
Now link2sd seems to work fine- I tried linking quite a few applications and all of them work fine, no complaints. It only gave me an error with some apps which I have previously *moved* to SD using Titanium backup, but upon moving them to internal storage link2sd picked them okay.
However, I noticed that using file explorer, root explorer etc- they all show the sd-ext partition as empty, with size of 0 bytes??
Then, I booted into recovery and tried to mount the sd-ext partition, but I get an error message... (all other partitions I can mount/unmount just fine).
To be sure, after each reboot it looks like all the applications linked2sd work appropiately, so everything looks fine.
However, now I am concerned whether I can create (and restore, of course) nandroid backups- what will happen with all these apps linked to sd? Am I right that CWM may not be able to backup (and therefore restore) anything that is on this partition?
Am I going to lose all these apps and data? Does TiB backup these apps+data and be able to restore them fine to sd-ext? I'm asking about TiB as a mediocre workaround of restoring applications that were in sd-ext (and thus omitted by CWM backup). That is, after restoring nand backup- doing an additional restore from TiB??
Any help/insight is welcome
Ah, yes, some more info:
Phone: LG optimus P500
ROM: Lupohirps CM9 4.0.3 from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1558213
Recovery: CWM 5.0.2.7 (By the way, whenever I try to flash 5.0.2.0 I get an error...)
that's weird since the app working. what ekstension do you have on sd card fat? fat32?
Can you open Android Terminal (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm) and issue these commands:
su
busybox ls -la /sd-ext/
busybox mount
If /sd-ext doesn't show up in mount, then it is not mounted.
Actually CM9 for P500 lacks file /system/etc/init.d/05mountsd (this file is responsible for mounting /sd-ext). IMHO You should ask ROM developer about sd-ext support.
If you want to test (and potentially restore your Nandoid backup or reflash CM9 afterwards) I can give you this script from CM7 (actually modified version that allows any ext version).
Your sd-ext files are actually in data/sdext2, not in /sd-ext.
Also Try using Amonra 3.0.6, overall it has better sd-ext support, I find it mounts and wipes things like dalvick cache inside the sd-ext partition as well , which is handy, unlike CWM.
Thanks for all your replies!
Sdcard file system is fat32. For the partition I have no idea as cwm didn't ask for any specific (e.g. ext2/3/4) and I haven't seen any way to get this Info...
Anyway, following this thread, I did find that all the app/data is in /data/sdext2- not sure what it means in terms of nandroid backup& recovery but it looks more reassuring..
As to RA recovery, I'm not in particular in love with cwm- it is just what I'm used to from other android devices I've been using. Actually on my htc mt4g I was using ext4 touch recovery and that one I really liked, but it is not supported in lots of devices. That phone was stolen, unfortunately. I'll give it a try, though.

Thanks! Looks likeb system/ cache/ data are all yaffs2, /mnt/Sdcard is vfat and /data/sdext2 is ext4. Not sure what all the output means (relatime, barrier=1, data= ordered etc. etc.)
So, can I figure out where the /data/sdext2 is physically stored? Is it actually the sd-ext/ext4 partition? Looks like must have, as its contents are way bigger than phone's 200MB internal storage...
Thank you all again

/data/sdext2 is the mountpoint for the ext4 partition thats on your sd card, physically its obviously on your sd card, but If you use linux, data/ is where the all partitions other then home partition get "attached"/mounted to, the 11link2sd script made by link2sd in yout init.d folder actually mounts it sdext2, the name means nothing, just something link2sd names it as.
---------- Post added at 08:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:30 PM ----------
So Basically nandroid will not back it up under /data/sdext2 as the script runs after recovery, the best way to backup apps that are on the ext partion is back them up using Titanium Backup, as that saves the real apks, and when you restore all your apps, select link2sd to automatically move them to sd-ext partition.
Hi at all,
at first sorry for my bad english.
I had a similar case. If I made a backup with cwm 5.0.2.7, cwm cant mount/read the sd-ext.
In a other thread a user wrote, that cwm 5.0.2.8 had problems with the sd-ext.
And he does downgrade to cwm 5.0.2.0, and than cwm will work.
So, I did this:
I open the rommanager and choose the option "install Clockworkmod", now I choose the "LG Optimus One (old BB)".
But i have the new baseband on my O1.
The basis of this is, if you choose the new baseband in the rommanager, he will install cwm 5.0.2.7. For the old is it the 5.0.2.0 version.
Now, Rommanger made the installation with cwm 5.0.2.0. to my phone.
After this i go in to the recovery and made my nand-backup. It works perfekt!
No problems with the sd-ext, after I did this.
May be this will help.

Thanks for the tip..
I have tried in the past to flash cwm 5.0.2.0 via Rom Manager, but I kept getting an error message, so I gave up.
Now I thought to give it a second chance, but as it fails to flash with Rom Manager (in the menu when I choose LG optimus one I don't get any choice between old BB or new or anything- it just reflashes 5.0.2.7) and from the "all recoveries menu I can only choose 5.0.2.0 but it gives an error message), so I downloaded the zip files from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523050 (including also Amon Ra 3.06) and tried to manually flash from recovery.
It flashed and showed recovery as "5.0.2.0" but nothing worked- every submenu that I tried to enter was black screen (with the CWM logo on background) and it gave me the creeps- I don't like being stuck without a functional recovery so I rebooted and flashed 5.0.2.7 again from Rom Manager.
I'll try to flash Amon Ra and see how it works.
[EDIT] flashed AmonRa 3.06 and it seems to work fine- able to mount/unmount all partitions including sd-ext, and it also has an option to check each of them in separate during nandroid backups.
A noobish question: it has also an option to include the ".android_secure" . Isn't this one a redundancy with sd-ext (e.g. contains all the apps/data that has been moved/linked2sd)?

Hi, Jaibar
I have LG Optimus One with JB 4.2.2, CM 10.1.
Here what I have done in order to gain extra space on my internal memory. All the steps that you have followed are the same as I did. BUT! There are two important things that I have followed that had greatly helped to succeed:
1) For every 100Mb internal memory - NO MORE than 512Mb of SD card memory(for my LG I have separated 965Mb on the SD card)
2) INT2EXT+ works with EXT2/3/4 partitions BUT INT2EXT4+ works with ONLY EXT4 partition. After I have watched this short video, and this blog post I have been able to restart my phone with extended internal memory.
Believe me, for three days I have been flashing my phone, trying to find the correct way. At the end I have noticed that the problem was that I couldn't mount /sd-ext I thought that maybe following this two rules will help - and it did!
I hope that it will help! Good luck
I'm using TWRP 2.3.1.0 to try and install a .zip file (the new JB version), using the Install feature. The situation I'm running into is that on both internal and external_sdcard my .zip file is not visible. I cannot mount the external sdcard, when I use the mount feature the TWRP log shows many E:unable to mount "/external_sdcard errors. Even on internal storage I can just see the folders and no individual files let alone the .zip file. When I boot into my currently installed ICS 9.4.5.30 version I can see all my files no problem including the .zip files.
I"m confused because I successfully used this very same process to upgrade to ICS 9.4.5.30 from .26 with no problem back in Sept.
I've searched and googled but so far nothing has added to my understanding off what is wrong or what to do at this point.
Please help if you can, thanks in advance.
I've found my .zip file!...under the internal directory /data/media (not sure why this file only appears under this directory). I've updated to JB from that .zip using the TWRP Install and it all looks good. Still don't understand why the file could not be found under the internal /sdcard directory nor the /external_sdcard with TWRP. Perhaps my misunderstanding of how TWRP works perhaps some problem with TWRP 2.3.x.
So I guess nothing more required.
How do I go about accessing the files that are stored in /sdcard on 4.1.1 after upgrading to 4.2? I see only default folders in /sdcard, /storage/emulator/0 and legacy, and /storage/sdcard0. In fact, I think they're all mounts to the same storage area. The available space reflects that none of my existing files are gone, but I can't figure out how to access them. If I return to a nand backup of 4.1.1, I can get at them, and the default contents I see in 4.2 show up in a folder called '0' in /sdcard.
As a secondary question, how would I go about moving the contents of /sdcard under 4.1.1 to the new /sdcard location for 4.2? I'm pretty sure it can't be done while Android is running and TWRP doesn't see the old /sdcard contents either, even when running 4.1.1.
Latest 2.4.1.0 TWRP should understand the 4.2 file structure.
4.2 is a mess IMO. I don't know how you get it working but someone did post a file to go back from 4.2 to 4.1.1
It's because your "internal sd card" doen't exist. It's really a folder on your device called /data/media
On 4.2, it's called /data/media/0 Everytime you perform a factory reset and boot a new 4.2 rom, Android creates another /0 folder: /data/media/0/0
The newer recoveries (like twrp 2.4) prevent this.
The /data/media/0 folder is for the "main user" on 4.2. Once another user is added, a /data/media/1 folder is created, with all of that users' data & content, files etc in there.
When going back, most apps (like TiBu & twrp recovery) refer to the /data/media folder, whereas the files are now in /data/media/0
So what you want to do, when on 4.1, is to move all files from /data/media/0 to /data/media and delete the /0 folder.
After that, flash twrp 2.4. That newer recovery takes care of the /data/media/0 legacy folder (actually it creates system links between the /data/media/0 and /data/media folders).
Hope this makes sense :good:

I have TWRP 4.3.0 but I still have to move everything every time I switch from 4.1 to 4.2 /vice versa
I'm on 4.1 right now and everything is in data/media. If I move everything to data/media/0, and switch to 4.2, will it recognize it? Such as game data etc.
EDIT:
I am a programmer with experience working on Linux, brand new to Android. Recently I got my first Android phone, a Moto G 4G (XT1045) and installed CM11-20141009-NIGHTLY-peregrine on it. Today I bought a 32GB SDCard and formatted it to ext4 filesystem with AParted.
So it seems like cyanogenmod kernel should have SDCard fix for kitkat built in. Now I have a specific problem. I am trying to switch Titanium Backup to use sdcard1 as backup the location. So I have to browse to that folder.
My sdcard seems to be mounted in two places:
/mnt/media_rw/sdcard1
/storage/sdcard1
but both of them have problems. /storage/sdcard1 is a fuse mount and is read-only, even to root. I can browse there with TitaniumBackup, but then TitaniumBackup can't write any backups. /mnt/media_rw/sdcard1 is writable, and I can make directories on it from adb. But TitaniumBackup cannot browse inside of it, because media_rw is only accessible to user 1023(AID_MEDIA_RW). So I can't point TitaniumBackup to my sdcard!
How to fix this?
