[Q] Nexus 5 Backlight Bleed - Opinions? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my 32GB Nexus 5 from Google Play. As the title suggests, there is some backlight bleed in the upper left hand corner as some others have reported. No other issues I can see though. I am still deciding whether to RMA. It is noticeable only really on dark backgrounds. Have you have this issue? Would you/did you RMA it?

Nope. That's way too tiny to RMA. All IPS screens have some amount of light bleed. And if that's the only issue, you don't want to get more

Hi yerbamata, that's certainly not the worst bleed I've seen but it looks like it could be fairly distracting. Now of course on lower brightness it isn't going to be as noticeable, but it's completely up to you whether it's acceptable or not as Google will accept RMA if you're not happy.
More importantly, are those 3 stuck pixels near the middle of your screen?

Good eye, I had to go back and check again. Those must be artifact from my old camera I used to take the picture. I checked again and definitely no dead/stuck pixels. But I do notice the backlight bleed when I pull down the google menu thing from the top (don't know what it's called), using the calculator, etc. So I guess I'll have to give it a week and see if I get used to it.
How common is this issue? It seems fairly common from what I've read, almost as if you're in the minority if you get one without bleed.
Also does anyone know how long Google accepts an RMA after initial delivery?
Thanks

Before you RMA, just know that every Nexus 5 I have seen in person has the slight light bleed at the top left corner.
This also coincides with the majority of the users on here.
I would save the trouble and just enjoy your phone. It's a great device.
Sent from my Nexus 5

It's common around the volume buttons but to widely various degrees. For me it's more noticeable at the bottom left where the black navigation bar is always lurking, but only when the brightness is cranked realistically. There were a few posts from people who had their top left corner lit up like a spotlight.
You can RMA your device during the 1 year warranty, and Google will cross ship you a new device so you're not without a phone though temporarily charging you for it. People have used this as an opportunity to inspect and compare the new device before returning whichever they choose.
I'd say some are taking advantage of this somewhat trying to get a "perfect" device, but if you're not happy with the phone Google is willing to work with you.

[Q] new tf700 screen imperfection ?

I notice a small (3mm x 3mm ) spotty blemish (four tiny dots arranged like the new windows icon) on the screen, probably in the actual LCD (cannot touch it).
It is only visible when the screen displays white.
I suppose this is a manufacturing defection. Anything else about the screen seems fine. quite solid build, except for negligible 0.5mm give on the left edge.
Anything else I should particularly check for? Shall I exchange it at bb?
There is really no anything else as big and as light as tf700, right?
Thanks.
Hello.
Not sure if we talking about same issue but I also have this white dot, almost like a dead pixel but it isn't. Its possible to be seen only when white background and easier to spot when viewing from side, not straight ahead.
I believe this is what is called hot pixel.
Bad thing about this is that I first had 1, then 2. Then I returned it. Asus said no problems. Now I have 4 and I am seriously considering to returing this. Just that I need my tablet for work and I know for Asus it takes over 2 weeks to consider what they would do.
Probably when not so hectic at work I will go and try returning again.
I have on right hand side some loosening. If I press the screen where is the volume buttons I can feel it moves. It is the only place of the tablet where this kind of movement can be spotted.
Yet 3 of the hot pixels are on the left side of the tablet. The newest one is close to middle but a bit more to right side.
I'll definitely return mine to Best Buy, but a bit debating whether I shall stick with tf700t after all.
Any clue whether there is any systematic difference between retailers / batches of s/n's ?

Backlight bleed galaxy note pro

How much of this is to be expected?
I have a noticeable amount , of course I only noticed it when in a dark room against black backgrounds.. but it makes me wonder if I should demand another unit from amazon.
Sent from my SM-P900 using XDA Free mobile app
Mine has it too. bottom right side and bottom. Only visible when watching full screen video that's letterboxed. Doesn't bother me though.
I notice it gets worse when I flex the tablet by holding it in landscape by the bottom left corner so I kind of wonder if in part it is more predominant on that corner for my tablet because that's the primary way that I hold the tablet. It's not like I can flex it the other way to get rid of the bleeding completely though so I don't know if I can reverse it. If memory serves, out of the box I already had some bleed anyhow. This is my second Note Pro and the first one had bleed on the bottom as well.
I'm sure you'll get responses from some who have no light bleed, some of which actually do but it doesn't bother them and some who really do not have any bleed. It's up to you I guess if it is worth the effort and waiting to try to get a perfect one. For me it simply is not . .
Thanks.. can any one post any pictures of their tablet?
I have attached mine under full brightness, total darkness and black background.. it is slightly exaggerated in some phots as it depends on what angle you see the screen
Sent from my SM-P900 using XDA Free mobile app
I have the same hot spot on the bottom edge to the right of center. On the right bottom corner I have some that is less pronounced.
The only 'sort of' light bleed I have is from the two softkeys when they light up.... Other than that, none whatsoever. (Can't take a photo as I can't imagine they'll shut down the entire train to give me some darkness...)

Yellow screens - does the problem still exist?

There were reports of OPOs and OPPO Find 7a-s with yellowish screens. Could OPO owners or others with information clarify if the problem still exists?
Thanks.
Edit: Ok, there is some info from an owner.
The display doesnt have a yellow tint and furthermore you can customize the display using different presets (standard, vivid, custom hue/tint mode etc) but out of the box there is no yellowness on the display (i.e. the hardware display looks great)

Hi,
I received mine yesterday and I have a yellow tint at the bottom of the screen. There are also others who have this issue.
E.g.: http://forums.oneplus.net/threads/oneplus-one-experience-day-one.36937/
Look at the three pictures at the bottom of the first post. You also see some shadow effects at the bottom which I also have. I posted a pic as well in the same thread:

I contacted David and thinking about opening a ticket and replacing it by a new one, yes.
Here is another user with the same problem.

Yellow Screen: This is an update from yesterday. So, the yellowness is there a bit ... but it's barely noticeable. I really have to strain to see it, and honestly, it hurts more to try to see it than to just use the phone. At this point, I do not think I would return the phone just because of the very slight yellow shadow on the bottom quarter inch of the screen. It's practically invisible. I am hoping it just goes away completely like happened for some of the iPhones a few years back.

This was posted by David S regarding some yellow screen issues. (Not the yellow tint at the bottom though)

Confirmed by OnePlus in Jerry's post, there is a yellow tint at the bottom. Quote: "Since brightness influences color temperature, the yellow tint at the bottom is due to the design of the phone". This is not talk of an uniform tint over the whole screen, but a yellow tint at the bottom.

Apparently that was said by one of the admins. They confirm that yellow spots exist but deny that this is a problem. I think this is a product defect and should be exchanged by the company without questions.
What do you think?

I would insist on getting it fixed up if you have a that partially yellow stain. It doesn't matter how "great" the price is, if it's got such a visual stain. I wouldn't put up with it.
Say what you will about Samsung phones, at least the OLED screens looked fabulous.

I am planning to get the phone, but seeing OPO denying that yellow spots on the bottom are defects (they say it is normal), I will hold off for a time. It is really idiotic on their side to deny the problem and deny RMAs.
Just got my OnePlus One today in the mail, and to be honest I think people may be making this deal bigger then it needs to be, or I got very lucky. On my OnePlus One there is a bit of yellow tint at the bottom, but it is SO minimal that it strains and hurts your eyes to even look for it, and if you use on-screen buttons it covers it up anyways. And even if you use the hardware buttons, the amount of yellow is so little that you never rarely it with day to day use. Hell, my Nexus 5's minimal backlight bleeding on the screen edges is more noticeable then the yellow on my OnePlus One.
With that all said though... this still may be a hardware issue for some users, and if so OnePlus One should stand behind their product and offer replacement devices.

I know.
I can't believe a company that touts itself as having "beautiful experiences" would be so bad in the "customer service and selling experience". Noobs.
Got my device yesterday. Pretty bad Yellow staining along the bottom half inch of screen. Quite bad IMHO.
Requested a return/replacement
That's the same here. Received it on Wednesday, I've got the same problem as yours: yellow tint on the quarter-bottom side of the screen, that's worse on the right-bottom edge than the left-bottom one. Hoping it goes away but I don't think so.
Same here, very bad yellowing at the bottom of the screen.
Have asked if they will replace it, but they just send me a standard email that everyone gets:
Hi
Thanks for getting in touch! There are three different types of 'yellow screen' issues.
One is where the screen is evenly tinted yellow - this is actually an intended effect as warmer screens offer more true-to-life colors than bluish screens. To adjust your screen hue manually, please go to Settings > (under Device) Display & Lights > (under Advanced Settings) Screen Color > Custom > Hue.
Another is a slightly yellowish band across the bottom of the screen when viewed from unconventional viewing angles at full brightness. Our screens are lit from the bottom instead of from underneath, and to minimize bezels we place the light sources very close to the edge of the screen. To prevent excessive light leakage, the bottom edge is designed to be slightly opaque, which is why it appears yellow from certain angles.
If your screen has yellow spots that appear to expand however, please send us a photo and we'll see whether it's a hardware issue.
You might have seen photos of these issues online - most were taken at extreme angles and 100% brightness, or even doctored to increase the contrast. Actual imperfections are usually very subtle and do not impact normal usage.
Thanks for understanding
Best regards,
Marilyn
They also say the evidence is tempered with, basically calling us liars.
That response is awful. My screen is blatantly yellow and they are saying it's supposed to be like that!? I've sent a RMA request - will see what response comes back
Yellow on mine too. Got the device yesterday and quite displeased.
Bad QC from the supplier of the display. Either the glass was not cured long enough to the touch screen, or it was
rushed out without QC inspecting them for rejects. With the amount of orders requested in China alone, not to mention
the international demand, doesn't surprise me.
What's sad, is the stance OnePlus is taking. "you are holding it wrong, we did it for a warmer color display".
Crock of beans! It's a DEFECT when the bottom part of the screen is YELLOW.
Some say it will go away over time, but if you have access to a UV light, a little time under one of those might get
rid of it. Considering how long it takes to get one, sending it back for a replacement might take as long as it did
just to BUY one.

I can't see any yellow on the screen of my OnePlus One.

Yellowing Of Screen on Corners?

So i was just browsing You Tube when I noticed that at the edge of my screen there was a yellowish tint to the white that it should be, so I brought up a completely white image on Google to find that 3 of the cormers had this yellow tint on them and in fact now that I have spotted it is quite noticable. I know the picture I've added is very poor so if you guys can't see it then I'll add another one. Anyone else experiencing this?

Usually that's the glue isn't it? Should vanish as you use the tablet, give it a week or so and if it is still there, take it back.
Well Ive had the tablet since it released so I think I might have to take it back
I've been noticing this lately as well. It started with the bottom left corner, and now it's also in the top right. It's rather distracting with light backgrounds.
Same thing after using the tablet for a month
You guys might just want to RMA your tablets. Although it's only an aesthetic issue, NVIDIA should allow replacements for that kind of thing. Is the tint extremely noticeable or only when there's a white background?

Question Display "stains" on white background

I noticed two light blue stains on the center of the display and around the fingerprint sensor. Very light, visible only at certain angles but noticeable especially when reading with white background (Facebook posts for example). Does anyone have a similar issue?
Pretty sure those are the under screen sensors
I sure hope so. Because I'd hate for them to spread Guess I'll have to get used to it, a bit annoying but it'll be fine. Thank you for your answer!

last blue stain i had on a display where on my Nexus 7 2nd Gen (IPS display), Google replace the tablet without bothering because it was spreading. However, the OLED screen is another technology so I don't know. Maybe you should wait and see if it spread or not. I didn't experiencing anything like this on my unit.
