No texting app. Need help. - General Questions and Answers

Hello all. I have a droid razr maxx that is rooted and when i was messing around with stuff i seem to have messed up something with my texting app and it was gone. I found the app .apk in my system/app folder but when attempting to install it i got a "app not installed". Frustrated with it i decided to just factory restore and just start everything fresh. Did a factory restore and my texting app is still not there and i still cant install it. I need help.

Reflash your ROM. (Install a third party SMS app first though, only reflash ROM if u want stock messaging app)
Smack that Thanks button if I helped!
KitKat came in on my OmniROM, running on my Note 2.
Sent from a small country called Singapore.
P.S. Time for school, not much time for XDA

Could you post a guide on how to go upon reflashing it (I had to do it once before but it was quite some time before). I installed a 3rd party SMS but no texts come through or go out. It's not necessarily that I want the stock one rather I need it , unless there is something I'm missing about getting the 3rd party SMS to work.

Do you have a Custom recovery installed? E.G CWM or TWRP
If you have : Download the rom you want and put it in the external SD or internal drive depends on your phone. (For example Samsung phones can flash with the ext + Int Drive)
Do a Full wipe : Clear cache,Clear Dalvik and Battery status in Advanced and Format System + Data. (No need to factory reset just wasting time, also don't forget to double check it since it's easy the click Format Ext SD card)
After this Flash using Flash from ZIP and then choose your Rom after this Download 0-day Gapps which can be found here (First Check if the Rom has Gapps packed with it) and flash it using the same way as flashing the ROM.
Reboot and your done

How to get back to stock if you are having issues:
1. You will need to flash a sbf, you can find guides here for Windows and here for Linux.
2. Reboot recovery by pressing X on the keyboard and turning it on
3. Press the search key so a menu pops up
4. Navigate to wipe data with the volume keys. Select with the camera button.
5. Then navigate to reboot with the volume keys and select with the camera key.
You are back to stock and you can root!
The File Manager was included in this rom so you are able to install the Bootstrap application so you can restore a back up or flash a different rom. Wipe your data after this.

Sweet, i am so excited for this. Gonna install it as soon as I get a chance, downloading now. I can't wait to see if you guys figure out custom kernels
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
I'm real curious to hear what you guys found that will allow custom kernels on this phone. I already read over what birdman and nenolod were trying and it seems they threw in the towel. I read some other posts on droidforums about initiating essentially a second boot second to trick the phone into loading a custom kernel, but nothing more on that topic. Really curious to see how you might be able to implement this
Nice work guys. I will probably give this a try this weekend.
I too would like to hear your theory on how to get a new kernel on the phone. Not in a hurry to see it happen, but just curious to hear the underlying theory.
Though, I do understand if you are waiting to get it released before sharing. Just don't forget to let the community know when/if you get it worked out. It will open a lot of doors for some of these rom cookers around here, and rom cookers of the future.
and just installed it, sans computer intervention (thank god nothing went wrong or I'd be SOL for 5 hours lol, im at work)
mounted, wiped cache/data, remounted, installed, remounted, and wiped cache/data again just to be safe
now I'm waiting for it to restore all my apps and stuff so I can get everything reconfigured and have a glorious blur free phone! thank you so much devs, this is fantastic
Hey guys, awesome ROM! Very stable so far!
One thing I noticed: The "Car Home" application shows up in Android Market, but the update fails when attempting to apply it. Not sure what the cause of this is just yet. If I can glean more information from my own testing, will let you know.
Thanks again for the work you've put into this!

I am not sure why that happens, but if you really want the new one from market, you can just remove it from /system/app and then it will install fine from market. I have had that issue with other apps before. Honestly, with a lot of these apps in the market now, there really isn't much need to include them in the rom.
Seems to work pretty well. Got stuck in a boot loop because I didn't wipe my data, so I rebooted recovery and wiped it. Problem solved.
The only problem I'm having is that I can't get Backup Assistant to work, so I can't restore my phone numbers.
I downloaded the stock app rar, and tried doing an ADB install for BackupAssistanceClient and BuaContactAdapter, but I get "Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_DEXOPT]".
I tried copying over BuaContactAdapter.apk and BackupAssistanceClient.apk manually (to /system/app) and setting permissions, but that doesn't seem to do anything.
Any ideas?

Export your contacts from the verizon website and then take that file and import it into gmail and sync your contatcs with gmail. Then, it doesn't matter which rom you install you'll have your contacts.

Here's what I did with another ROM. Go to VZW with your pc. Navigate to contacts. Export contact list as Outlook CSV. Go to your gmail acct and import the CSV. Sync phone contacts to gmail. Important to do the outlook export though. Regular CSV doesn't populate gmail contacts properly.
Just a quick question. If and when we flash this, are we still rooted? If so, can I just install bootstrap and reboot recovery and restore? Or do i have to do the whole root process again like if it was an original phone from store?
one thing with the bootloader i remember when i first got my eris was people on the fourms would keep emailing htc for the bootloader keys because it was hard to crack and htc gave them up ... maybe if we flood moto with emails and stuff they'll loosen up like htc

Yes, it comes with root. No, you do not want to restore. Restoring will bring you back to the backup you created. This rom comes with Superuser.apk (root) no need to re-root.

I seem to remember the alpha thread saying not to flash themes over this....but don't think it was mentioned this go round....still the case? (assume so). Figured it was worth noting in the first post if that's the case.
Also....I just installed this, and am also stuck unable to get it programmed.
First time it started the music and then got a failed message. Since then I don't even get the music, and after 20 seconds or so I just get a "Please enter the # you're calling about" message and if entered, it just tries to transfer me to cust service.

I'm not sure if the OP is a troll, or just stupid... How hard is it to give ACCURATE information on what you are trying to do.
Trolled. Perhaps.
Troll or not , I have had this issue when trying to update apps. I haven't really figured out what's causing apps not to load. I get "app not installed, no usb or SD card found".
Ill be vague just like the op. Here's what you do clear cache and defaults on the market.

I get it when the download interrupts and the file is corrupted. So it can't install. I usually just redownload and its fine.
Try unmounting ur SD card, then installing. I had a problem awhile back with specific apps and that fixed it.

I am having the same problem and it is driving me insane. I have cleared cache in the market. I have rebooted, reflashed, reset to factory, Took out the SD card, put it back in, unmounted it, booted without it.
It doesn't matter what rom I flashed as I have tried several. I just restored my phone with CWM to a backup I made right after I first rooted and the market still doesn't work.
Are you rooted?? Its most likely a bad previous install that needs to be removed first which can be quite troubling because some show that they aren't installed when in actuality they are just not properly. IF YOU ARE ROOTED try using Titanium Backup Root to remove the bad install.

Possibly the ROM's included the app but have a bad install inside the ROM. I seen this issue with a couple apps specifically FLASH PLAYER. Which app are you having issues with?? When in Titanium Backup go to the Backup/Restore section and it should show all of your installed applications..scroll to see if the application you are trying to install is on the list...if so uninstall it. If this doesn't work its possible there is a previous apk file on your phone of this app which is corrupting the download which can be removed with an app like "ROOT EXPLORER" unfortunately it costs money. To do that you would venture into the system/app folder and delete the apk file if in fact there is one in there. To check to see if there is one most file explorers will allow you to go into these folders but you cannot access anything.

I have Root Explorer. Thanks. seems this is a common problem after searching google. No know solution as everyone has got theirs to work doing something different. I have not made any backups with Titanium as the roms I have used auto re-installed everything. I am wondering if it has something to do with that. Any time I flash a rom now, it says "starting download" for all my apps in the market. They never start though.
it's working now. not sure what I did though. I wiped everything and flashed BAMF remix (what I was using originally) and when I went through the setup I did everything like I did before. Only thing I changed when swapping roms was I would not set up my HTC account in the setup.
I'm not rooted (yet!) and I've been having the same problem with the market for the last two days. Probably half the apps I bought/downloaded hung on authorizing. When finally authorized it took quite a while to download and show under my apps. One took almost an hour to show up. Email notifications were also delayed. Tried clearing the cache but that didn't help...

[Q] Finished rooting with oneclickrcovery...few questions on roms.

1) The first Rom I flashed was eagleblood. I put it on my SD card from my computer, then I put the SD card back in my phone and did the rest from there. Can we flash Roms without using the computer like if we download right to our phones on the website and then flash?
2)Eagleblood is the first and only Rom I looked at and flashed so far but after clicking the eagleblood link, there was about 7 or 8 different downloads. I guess I got lucky and chose the right one so I'm assuming the others were updates. So for the future, how do I distinguish between them and know which is the actual Rom download link?
3) Which is the best Rom?
4) How do I get my home screen to show in landscape view since I'm rooted now?
5) When flashing from Rom to Rom, how do I get all my apps, phone settings, and everything else back without having to take an hour to resetup everything? Can you explain the procedure if you are going to recommend an app for this? Right now I downloaded the free version of titanium backup so I'm assuming that would be it. I see where you can back stuff up with this app, but after switching Roms, how do I restore if the flashing of the new Rom will erase titanium?
6) Which apps would you guys recommend uninstalling from eagleblood that wont hurt anything?
Thanks guys.

1. Yes
2. The newest one. Look at the version numbers.
3. That's up to you to decide for yourself. Nobody's preferences are the same.
4.You could have done this before. It depends on what launcher you are using most of the time. Play around in the launcher settings.
5.Get the paid version of titanium. Use it to backup user apps+data. Settings and system apps don't normally respond well to a new rom. After you flash something new, get on the market and just download titanium again. Restore from your backup afterwards. All your apps+data will be back. Your phone settings need to be done manually to avoid errors.
6.If you're unsure about uninstalling apps, get the paid version of titanium and freeze the app instead. If it screws something up then defrost.
All of this info is already here. Poke around a little more.

Thanks for all the answers. How do we do it from phone?
I believe EB has a mobile site, so just navigate to it using your browser and download the appropriate files. They'll wind up on the SD card where you can just flash through CWM.
what ever you download from the browser it'll show up in SD cards/Downloads... it'll be in there and then from there you can move it or you can navigate from the CWM to there

How do YOU restore your apps and settings?

I am currently using titanium backup which I'm assuming most of you do as well, however its a quite tedious process restoring all my apps, it asks me individually to install every app which takes a very long time depending on how many apps you are restoring.
With the developing section constantly streaming new updates and roms, how does one keep up with the restoring? I must be missing something here, do you guys all have to install your restored apps one by one?
There must be a simpler way right? I know that if you dont do a full wipe that your apps and settings stay but i find myself switching roms alot which do require full wipes.
If your rooted and buy titanium it will reinstall your apps without going one by one.

I have had Titanium Pro for a couple years. When you backup apps do you just choose non system apps?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
I've been using Titanium and as a complete system that backs up settings for apps as well as the app itself, it's pretty awesome.
However there are times (like immediately after flashing a new rom) when you have nothing extra installed but a file manager and you want to install just the app of something from your sdcard without having to re-download from Google Play. For this, I have used and app available on Google Play called "Android Assistant" that has a reasonably simple back up that will backup just the apks of installed apps. It installs it in a directory "AndroidAssistant_appbackup" in the root directory of the sdcard. Using a File Manager you can easily go into there and install backed up apps.
If you use Titanium, you seem to have to use Titanium itself to restore stuff.
Titanium Backup Pro and SMS Backup and Restore do the trick for me. They are both very quick processes, so once you get the hang of it youll have no hesitations in switching ROMs constantly. Flash ROM, let it boot, go through the setup real quick, connect your google/email/facebook and whatnot, restore apps from TB, and restore texts, all takes less than 10 minutes.

You are looking for clockwork mode, backup and restore - but unless you are prepared to root this isn't possible. Why would anyone want to stay rooted? Stock ROM is really, really poor.
I back up my apps using this tool...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1448239
It's free and downloadable right from XDA.
It makes a single flashable zip file with all of your downloaded apps in it. (I don't think it backs up system apps)
When you install a new ROM you simply flash the zip and boom...all your apps are back.
The drawback is that it doesn't save app data. For that I use Titanium free version. Reinstalling data takes about 2 seconds per app instead of 30 seconds per app to reinstall the entire thing.
The whole process of putting apps and data back into a new ROM takes about 10-15 minutes.
I prefer Mybackup Pro, backs up apps and their data, sms & mms. Call log, settings and even how your homescreen setup. Been using it for about a year now and it's awesome.

Many apps have a built in back up system that will let you do this.
For example, Go Launcher lets you back up your Go Launcher settings to a file it stores on the SD Card.
If you have to do a factory reset at some point and need to reinstall Go Launcher from scratch you can install it then simply restore your saved settings. Works like a charm. I'd say about 10% of the apps I use have this feature.
However, if you're talking about being able to back up every app and all its data and restore it....then no. You can't do that when not rooted.
Now if you don't want to root because you like your stock set up the way it is, you should know that you can root your phone without changing anything about the stock interface. You'll just have the ability to do more complete back ups, modifications to settings etc.
(Though fair warning, if you do root it, you won't stop with just doing backups. You'll get carried away like the rest of us and start tweaking EVERYTHING. But that's cool too.)

Thanks for the info. I know that some applications have backup options, but I was hopping that there's an easier way to backup more important apps, or actually its data.
I also know what rooting means, and I'm not going to end at backups
Actually, I like stock firmware for now, don't need to change that, I just want to root for some more advanced options, additional software that needs root access, and maybe to remove, or at least freeze some unnecessary apps.
P.S. I'm actually a little disappointed about HTCdev web page. I was almost sure, that I can unlock bootloader and root the system without factory reset. I read all the info, and warnings on HTCdev.com, and nowhere, NOWHERE was written that to unlock bootloader you need to factory reset your device.
I went through all the steps, and on the last one, where I had a choice to flash, or to abort, was mentioned that flashing will do factory reset. The worst thing is that the steps shows up one after another, I couldn't even read the last one before sending the unlock code to HTC. So now - even when I didn't unlock my device, they have info that I wanted to do this, and my warranty is voided (or at least partially voided).

[Q] Multiple "Unfortunately XXXX has stopped" issues

Hi there! I'm running a 'vanila' ICS 4.0.4 Nexus S. After the last reboot i'm having multiple pop-ups about applications that were forced to stop. Literally all system apps (Contacts, Messaging, Market etc), Google apps were forced to close. Phone doesn't rings and so on.
Most sad fact is that i can't even manage to install any program for backing up the phone and make a factory reset.
What can I do now?
Any help is much appreciated
Thanks in advance

try this first: go to cwm, choose fix permissions, and see if it works. if not, you can do this: do a nandroid backup with cwm, then, factory reset everything. cache, data EVERYTHING. install any rom of your choice, then, download the titanium backup app, and you can extract app and data from the nandroid backup using titanium. never tested this my self since i backup everything before flashing and clear all data, so app crashes.
hope this helps and please hit the thanks button of you find this helpful!
Thanks for the tip, but i doubt i can do that since i can't install a thing, even appInstaller crashes for me

Oh, I see. You must have installed the update from 2.3 without wiping. Or something like that. Based on my knowledge, the best things you can do are:
1. Wipe/factory reset then reboot.
Or
Root your phone. Which wipes everything including the SD card partition. You can back up the SD card easy. I suggest the latter. So you can flash custom recovery images and do lots more than 'clean' ICS. One more thing, unrooted and unmodified is technically called stock. You will see this word a lot of times. Hope this helps.

I had similar conditions, I thought it was kernel/rom problem. and now it seems not!
I fix it this way: go into CWM recovery, backup, and then immediately restore. and the problem is gone. I know it sounds crazy, but it really works for me... every time.

And also, try clear data of the apps that had been crashing, go to its app info and click clear data. See if this solves the problem.
^He's not rooted.

ok guys, thanks for the help. but i'm thinking of the other way around
can i copy stock ICS 4.0.4 fw file on to internal storage and try to update the phone from HBOOT menu (the one called up with holding 'volume up' key)?
the thing is i have some info on the phone such as sms that i'd like to keep
or perhaps copy whole 'content' of the storage to my pc and move sms base or whatever back after factory reset?
is there a way to access internal storage while in HBOOT menu, cos in the loaded up state i can't copy fw file due to crashing system apps?

You may try backing up SMS with GoSMS to SD-card

I suspect the SMS are stored in the system partition... Google it. If it is, again, you need root to access those files.

try this first: go to cwm, choose fix permissions, and see if it works. if not, you can do this: do a nandroid backup with cwm, then, factory reset everything. cache, data EVERYTHING. install any rom of your choice, then, download the titanium backup app, and you can extract app and data from the nandroid backup using titanium. never tested this my self since i backup everything before flashing and clear all data, so app crashes.
hope this helps and please hit the thanks button of you find this helpful!
