hi there guys,
I have some questions about how to make a total back-up of your rom, so you don't have to setup your apps and stuff like that, when you wanna try something new. Setting everything up when I wanna go back,is holding me back.
hope this is not a total repost, if it is just show me the old thread, cause I couldn't find it.
Errr... A classical Nandroid (whole Rom with Kernel, Apps and Settings) and/or Titanium Backup (Apps and Settings - possible to transfer data between different roms) should offer everything you need

I always backup and restore from recovery menu of clockwork, this means when restoring everything is put back as it was.

I downloaded (and paid for) the newest version of clockwork manager from the marked. How do you do it, just from the app or do you boot in recovery? When you say full recovery does that include everything, so you don't have to setup anything?
Yes mate, boot into recovery, select "backup and restore", then backup - this will save a full copy of your system as it stands. When you backup from the recovery menu it will put everything back exactly as it was when you backed it up - ie all apps & data already setup

No.. you dont need to wipe before restrore.

I believe that there is a couple of differing questions are being asked and answered here.
A Nandroind backup or full device backup (excluding RADIO) will enable you to restore your device back to the exact state that it was in when taken. All the phone partitions SYSTEM/DATA/BOOT/CACHE/etc are all backed up. Therefore restoring one of these backups will ensure that the ROM, kernel and data will be restored together and the phone will be operational.
A Titanium Backup backs up applications and setup data that enables you to easily restore your installed applications and configuration. After a factory reset or a re-install of the same ROM.
It can often be problematic to use a titanium backup after changing the version of the ROM you used or when moving from one ROM to a completely different one. In fact quite often ROM cooks recommend that you don't use a Titanium backup restore in the setup of their ROM.
That being said I still take both types of backups on my device. As titanium backups are useful for restoring individual applications to a previous state if they encounter a problem or corruption.
I believe that the Nandroid backup is the most useful recovery tool we have available to us and always take one, before flashing any new ROM or ZIP file, better to be safe than sorry.
Although I'd also recommend that all personal data ie calendar & contacts should be backed up by sync'ing to the cloud and never just kept locally on the device.
I recently flashed a new rom (the last time I did this was almost 2 years ago so I forgot what to do). Titanium backup has been doing weekly updates for a long time. So when I started up the phone titanium backup is gone, I read that I must redownload from the play store, but when I run it, it says I failed to acquire root privileges. It tells me to get busy box, so I download that too, but that won't install properly.
What should I do now? Have I lost root? The bootloader is available...that means it's still rooted right? The internal sd card still shows my folder of titanium backup and all the other root folders I used to have on my phone, I just can't get titanium backup to run so i can't restore.

If you flash a new rom root is lost.
You have to root again.

A few of the JB ROMS were causing issues with root. The fix was to re-flash the SU (superuser) apk and that would fix things right up. You should be able to find it doing a search.

What rom did you flash?
What, if anything, did you wioe in recovery?
Did you get a superuser or supersu prompt when titanium started?

Not necessarily so. Most custom roms are pre-rooted by the dev. Ive flashed countless roms and until recently w/ jb not had any issues w/ root access.

just flash supeuser again and you will be fine...

it pretty much looks like this in TitBack, give or take a few letters: "[SMS/MMS/APN] Phone/Messaging...". when you tap on it, the pop-up recognizes it as "Phone/Messaging Storage". this is where your text messages are.
some 3rd-party MMS apps like GoSMS Pro can back up your messages too, and I believe there's also an app or two solely for backing up your messages to your sdcard/internal storage.
Titanium Batch restore fail
Hi all
Having a few problems, I'm new to flashing roms and the use of Titanium Backup and I've just flashed my second ROM. I've gone from CM9 to CM10. Before doing so I created a backup of apps + data.
I flashed the ROM fine, and ran the batch restore function in Titanium. I have all the icons on my homescreen from the previously installed apps but after clicking on them my phone tells me that app isn't installed. I then notice that my notification from Titanium's batch restore shows the apps I had downloaded from the play store failed to restore (the notification said that the elements failed after batch restore was complete).
I noticed that these apps have a line through them when the list of apps I want to restore appears.
Titanium then advised me that the apps did not restore as the Android ID had changed, So I then reverted to the previous android ID thinking this to be the solution. However, after running the restore function again, the same amount of elements failed to restore.
Due to my lack of knowledge in Titanium and my need for these apps, I turned to the play store and decided to manually redownload all the apps again. This does not work either! The error message I get is the apps cannot be downloaded due to an error (491). I guess this is to do with the android ID changing?
Please help, how can I get these apps to restore? and also how can I be able to download apps from the play store again? :crying:
EDIT: So I was able to reinstall the apps from the play store by wiping the dalvik + cache.
This still leaves me baffled as to why Titanium wasn't able to do this

Did you try to restore system apps? I always use tb w/ the pro key to restore user apps + data, and have been getting the changed android id lately, but whether I keep the new id or revert to the old one, my restore works. Depending on what ROM I'm going to or from, sometimes I have to change my home screen shortcuts for system apps.

I didn't select restore system apps, instead I selected restore all apps with data, failing that I tried restore missing apps + all system data.
What option should I normally be selecting to do a straight restore after flashing a ROM? Does the fact that there is a line through the apps that I'm trying to restore mean anything?
I always select "restore missing apps + data" it's the 1st option under restore in the batch menu. The apps with a line through them are the ones that tb recognizes as being backed up but not installed.

Background: I have a nexus s 19020A running stock rom with root. I'm looking to switch to CM10 (stable) as google is no longer supporting this device and JB generally runs pretty slowly. Backups can be performed with titanium backup without issue. What I plan on backing up is apps and app data. General setting don't really matter (only settings for email, gmail, pertinent stuff like that). I use CWM and plan on flashing everything through recovery
My questions:
1) Can anyone link me to the correct version of gapps to flash
2) How should I flash everything? Would this be the correct procedure?
a) NAND backup using CWM. b) Factory reset and wipe of dalvik cache. c) flash CM10, gapps, SU. d) Boot and restore with titanium backup?
3) Would a backup and restore of user apps and system data using titanium backup by recommended? If not, how should I go about backing up everything in preparation for the flash?
As you can see, I'm relatively new to flashing roms. Any help is greatly appreciated, and if I missed anything (backup-wise, flash-wise, or other), please let me know
Its pretty easy to flash a ROM. This tutorial will help you with it. Just follow the complete tutorial step to step and you will be running CM10 within 15 minutes.
The important thing while backing up is to sync your contacts with Google, this way your contacts will be real safe and you can easily get them to you as soon as you add your Google account to your device. To backup text messages, this app is recommended.
While in case of apps and app data, Titanium backup is to be considered as a worthy choice.

I have A LOT of SMS/MMS messages on my phone. I like to restore ALL of them between ROM flashes. I usually use Appextractor, but now it is NOT working and does not restore my SMS/MMS. (I am not flashing from MIUI/CM to MIUI/CM so that isn't the issue.) Appextractor did this in seconds. Now, I would like to restore my SMS from my nandroid backup from within Titanium backup. I have tried enabling migrate system data, and restoring "Messaging" from the nandroid backup but it does not restore my SMS/MMS.
My question is: How can I successfully restore my SMS/MMS from a nandroid using titanium backup? I have emailed their support and have not gotten a reply in a few days. OR if you know why Appextractor (not the beta) has suddenly stopped working, that would be appreciated too.

Why do you have so much SMS/MMS?
Use "this app" to do it, it works! (UNLESS it can restore tens of thousands of SMS quickly, as Appextractor did)

Needed to restore Messaging data in Titanium and NOT messaging. Did not see the actual SMS/MMS before.

Restore "Phone/Messaging Storage" with DATA only in Titanium backup. And make sure migrate system data is checked in preferences.

I found through trial and error why all the apk and nandroid extractors only work on certain parts of image,if you are trying to for example extract your text messages, only the application the phone has registered as the default application for texting is able to make mods. if you switch whatever extracting program you are using in settings to default sms program it will work as it did before kitkat. hope this helps......

make sure you remember to switch the default back to normal as soon as you are done and reboot your phone before you text anyone,

I made a nandroid using TWRP on my Moto X running 4.4.2. Now I am updated to 4.4.4 and want to extract my texts messages from my 4.4.2 nandroid. I selected the Phone/Messanging Storage for extraction, data only. Titanium B/U extracts the texts fine and the messanging app works fine UNTIL I reboot - after rebooting I can send texts but not receive them anymore.
Any thoughts on why Titanium B/U is messing with my 4.4.4 messanging app?

They're in the format for whatever you exported them for. Soooo 4.4.2 in your case.
For example, restore the 4.4.2 Nandroid, export with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&hl=en , install 4.4.4, reimport with that too. Or restore 4.4.2 Nandroid, update to 4.4.4 'normally', then you got them in 4.4.4 format.

The text restore fine, it is just that after I restore them I can't receive texts. I can send texts, just not receive them. So Titanium B/U is doing more than just restoring my texts, it is messing with the messanging app somehow. I suspect it may have something to do with the APN.
I have seen others post on other forums about having this problem.

FYI - when I used SMS B/U and Restore I could send and receive texts but it couldn't restore all of my texts, either.

You mean return to 4.4.2, unroot and then take the 4.4.4 OTA? I am likely going to try that. Since my Bootloader is already 4.4.4 it should be fine. From what I recall being posted here in the past, the OTA installer will recognize that my bootloader is up to date and move on to the next item and not try to patch a 4.4.2 bootloader.
I will search the thread to make sure I am remembering this correctly, but IIRC the poster who first posted this was very knowledgeable.
I also could try doing it through the Motorola Device Manager.

Did this, ended up with the same problem.
Noob/idiot alert.....
I've just tried to restore my SMS's by TiBu, but I think I've f'd up a bit.
I ticked 'data only' in TiBu and restored 'phone/messaging storage', but it seems restoring from a HTC M7 Sense backup to an M7 5.1 GPE rom doesn't quite work. (I stupidly thought data would be compatible)
Now the phone just keeps popping up com.android.phone has stopped. no matter how many times I click it keeps popping up.
Unfortunately I didn't make a backup in TiBu before trying this out.
I'm sure I can fix it with a factory reset, or at worst a re-flash, but I'm away from my computer and wifi for a few more hours yet.
Is there a way I can un-do what I did, or fix this in some way, in the mean time?

I remembered I had a backup of the original rom, so I've just restored that for the mean time.
First post, read the rules, hopefully I didn't forget any before posting this. Searches weren't helping as much as I'd hoped. If trying to help you likely don't need to read most of this, I provided a lot of detail and history at the end in case some may be relevant.
Summary:
I removed system apps using Titanium Backup Pro. Things seemed to work okay but then I restored nandroid backup(s). The restored phone has a ton of things crash and I think that the nandroid restore did *not* restore system apps I removed.
Shouldn't a nandroid restore put things back as though I never touched it post that backup?
I have a stock ROM for my phone of 4.3 (not the one from Kies). Is my best option to copy it as update.zip on my phone and use CWM to install it, then nandroid restore again?
During all of this I did two nandroid backups to the phone SD and never found them on it (only found ones on the external), but according to the free space, something has taken up roughly 4GB from when I first started playing.
Long-winded version:
I did a nandroid backup in CWM recovery mode. I then did a backup of all apps and data using Titanium Backup Pro. After both backups I used Titanium Backup Pro and removed most of two lists of apps, link reference below, including system apps. I made a second nandroid backup at this point.
I restored my phone to the first nandroid backup. It seemed okay but then a number of apps crash. Titanium Backup Pro, CWM, Google Play, and more close immediately when I try to open them. My Swype keyboard opens in some apps but not others (fails in Chrome), I tried to restore again doing the factory reset wipe in CWM first, same issue. I tried my second nandroid backup, same issue. During this I tried clearing cache and data for the apps and they still crashed.
After trying simply a factory reset, I found I had no keyboard app (so it was hard to tell if certain things worked since I couldn't logon for Google Play). Since I use the Swype keyboard, keyboard was an app I removed (and this worked perfectly fine *before* restoring).
Why I restored:
I was pleased with the results except my BlueTooth quit working and restoring Bluetooth share 4.1.1-L710VPBLJ7 didn't fix it. I restored to my original nandroid backup to see if it had worked there (it did).
Extra Details:
When I rooted my phone I used CF-Auto-Root and Odin 3.09 successfully, then installed SuperSu which disabled KNOX for me. I had a failed attempt first, likely due to a possibly faulty USB port, using Odin 3.07 that resulted in my having to "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization" with Kies.
