[Q] [Noob question] Can the Galaxy Nexus CM rom work on Galaxy Core? - General Questions and Answers

Sorry, if this is dumb. I clearly know little to nothing about this stuff, but I was wondering since the galaxy nexus and the galaxy core have such similar specs, if the kitkat-based CM rom that came out for the galaxy nexus would also work on the Galaxy Core...or is that completely not how it works? Any explanation would be much appreciated.

No absolutely not. Attempting to flash a rom which comes from a device different to your own, will typically always leave you with a soft-bricked device, if not a hard-bricked one.
Firstly, they have different chipsets. This means the kernel's are completely different.
Secondly, even for devices with the same chipset, and similar kernels this does not work. Each device has its little variations, screen type, camera type, etc. Thus, each device needs different proprietary drivers and code in the kernels in order to initialize those different parts of the device. Which is why xda has all of these device specific forums, even for such tiny differences as which carrier the phone is on. Because the kernels differ somewhat for initializing the radio aspect of the device, some carriers operate on cdma, others on gsm. Those networks each require different radio hardware. So unless the device is universal and has both gsm and cdma capabilities kernels will be different for the device's variations.
Anyways. Answer, no.

Differences between MSM8255 and MSM8255T

Hi folks,
I am a owner of a SGS+ (i9001) which chipped with the chipset MSM8255T.
Now I've seen that are out some ICS-ROMs working with the Desire HD already which contains the (estimated) previous version MSM8255.
Unfortunately I could not find any useful information at Qualcomm, which shows the differences between these two chipsets.
May I use one of these ROMs as a base for my development for an MSM8255T or differ the chipsets too much?
There is an Alpha-Release from SE for the Arc S (4.0.1) which has the same Chipset as the i9001 ... but this lacks the basic functions including the modem and wifi ...
not a good starting point when i have the chance to start behind this limitations.
Nice holidays
Hi hirnwunde!
Funny nick )
I own a SGH-T679 (Exhibit II) witch is a half brother of the GT-I8150 (Galaxy Wonder).
What I can state that my phone works with SGW roms, issues are with the keys and the camera.
The SOC seem to be the same on different clock speed.
I don't know if there is a way to safely boot SE or HTC roms on Samsung phones.

You have to watch for other device though, for instance the screen and camera needs different drivers. that by itself prevents direct usage from other phones even though the cpu is the same..

[Q] It seems similar to the Galaxy S2,can mods for S2 be ported to the GT7+ ?

I have a Galaxy S2 which seems to share the same chipset as the GT 7+.
I've just ordered a tab7+ and as there is a massive amount of roms available for the S2, including ICS. Would the binaries for the S2 help make an ICS rom for the GT7+?
Binaries? No - completely different screen, very different peripherals, and no Honeycomb for the Tab 7. Even when both have ICS, they will be very different builds.
Kernel source? Due to being 2.6.36.x, the Honeycomb source base for your kernels has differences from the S2 codebase - so a lot of stuff can't be directly applied, but a competent developer (you have one with garyd9) can apply the "concepts" in many cases.
Unfortunately, Samsung screwed up the wifi driver in the 7 Plus. It's binary-only (no source code) and it seems to have bugs.

I don't think there are any kernel mods I'd want to bring over from that device. As far as what the OP called "ROMs", I have no idea what they are referring to. There doesn't seem to be any read-only memory in the tablet.
If he meant "firmware", then I have to admit that I'd prefer not to do that kind of thing. There are many different kinds of developers in the world... some get off working at the lowest possible level (kernels, etc) and others prefer higher level things. I'm the former, and it would take the latter to do firmware development.

Android OS

Hey. Ive done a few mods and upgrades already, but one thing has always stumped me about android os and apps. Can anyone explain the variations between the different roms? I understand that the scale and power difference between say a phone and a tablet cause there to be differences, but why is there such gulfs separating to almost identical devices? Take, as a possibly poor example, a yarvik 10.1" tablet and an almost identical viewsonic 10.1" tab. what would stop the viewsonic roms from working on the yarvik? Apologies if this has already been answered somewhere else, I haven't managed to find a similar thread to answer this for me.
Thanks

The main reason the ROMs aren't able to be used on both devices is because they have a different chipset and hardware. And ROMs are designed to work with the specific hardware of a specific device. The only way to get them to work on other devices is to port the ROM you want to that device (Porting ROMs ranges from pretty straightforward to extremely hard).

Port lollipop 5.0 from galaxys1 i900 to this device

Is anyone interested in porting lollipop to this device from the i900

I appreciate your enthusiasm for this device. Unfortunately, there is no meaningful open-source kernel support for Samsung devices. While we were able to get the SGS 4G running reasonably stably for KitKat, taking it to Lollipop would be a far stretch. This is not the same device as the Galaxy S (I9000), no matter the external similarities.
Mine is limping along on OmniROM 4.4.4 as a spare phone for my foreign SIM, but it takes a few minutes to boot. I can't imagine taking the time to develop and build the kernel drivers required for Lollipop.
I'd suggest continuing to run one of the ROMs available in this forum, or purchasing a more contemporary phone if you want to run Lollipop.
I'd love to see Lollipop be ported to this device, which I have. However, I have moved on, and now have 2 devices running Lollipop, if you look at my signature.
It's not an impossible feat, it's a matter of resources and time. Some debug tools like a riff box or other jtag. And time that, for me at least, is pretty busy with work and other projects.
The biggest problems of any sgs port is the lack of internal storage and slow mmc (so moving data to mmc is bad) and the ST-Ericsson radio. Also, the internal onenand flash is bigger then the other sgs devices so you have to update the flash layout.
The kernel on my github has either a gpio issue or wake-lock unbalance. So if the screen turns off, the phone basically doesn't wake up.
Without some serious work done to the kernel, and someone's time, I don't for see lollipop on the sgs4g.

Has anyone bought generic unbranded smartphones available on ebay etc?

1) I'm hoping someone can advise pls! I'm a very light user mostly for wsapp and sometimes maps/gps when walking (no gaming and occasionally watch youtube videos) so was hoping to find something £40-£50.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M20-Pro-...var=564119885073&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649
There are others I'm looking at but they don't mention anything about the processor (sometimes it'll mention the number of cores but no name)? The specs seem way better than even xiaomi phones for the same money, I know there's gonna be no support updates etc. how important is that? Couldn't I just search for a custom ROM, try to upgrade to higher android version etc? Would it be difficult/impossible to find roms for an unbranded phone?
Also I've read that there's a possibility they could just be sneaky re-brands so potentially could be getting a xiaomi etc. phone for less?
2) I'm also considering paying a bit more if unbranded is a no-go. Xiaomi Redmi 7 3GB/32GB around £100 vs Xiaomi Mi Play 4GB/64GB if it's £6 more?
I like the extra ram and storage for only £6 more but the battery seems better on R7 and larger screen

I've seen some advertisements (on wish.com or Ali Express) for devices with no apparent name brand that mention having 10 core processors, dual sim, Android 9 and more. These are all MTK devices which pose difficulties if you want to flash a ROM into them to upgrade or change something. RCA tablets are MTK devices and I, along with many others have spent a lot of time just trying to gain access to such devices. It's been done. However, it has been more than difficult as of yet to find any compatible ROMs and these devices are extremely picky when it comes to using other ROMs. For those of us that are currently still working on it, we have yet to find anything compatible. That's not saying they are bad devices, they are actually pretty good I've had mine (the RCA Maven, Viking and Galileo) for years with little problems.

Thanks for the reply. Any MTK processor devices are difficult/unlikey to have custom roms or tweak/upgrade in any way?

Theoretically there should be, but many here would rather work on the newest devices most of which are not MTK (Media Tek). They're not built like Samsungs and if you open one up the whole motherboard is the size of today's phones or roughly one quarter the size of the tablet which could be the reason they're so cheap. The only thing I've been able to flash into mine is the original stock firmware, anything else led to bricking. And recovering from a brick is difficult the SP Flash tool is nothing like the Odin3 we use for Samsungs.
