[Q] Wi-Fi not working - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After flashing stock ROM on my Moto G I was not able to use Wi-Fi, it does not turn on. So I tried some other ROMS from various countries and nothing. However when I flashed the Nexus G - beta 4 custom ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606943) I got it working again.
Can someone please explain what is happening, and help me?

Solved
So, I got it working again. The problem was indeed in the persist folder, it was missing a file named WCNSS_qcom_wlan_factory_nv.bin. So I managed to extract it from the persist.img and moved it to persist folder again. After that I edited the bin file and inserted my MAC address. Finally I have flashed my phone to stock ROM again and it worked just fine.
Here's the file:

fixed
Thank you so much this fixed my problem as well

Ok. Let's try but first let me e sure how to do it.
1. Edit persist.img with the .bin file inside.
2. Installl stock rom on my phone.
3. Flash persist.img in fastboot mode.
It's that correct?

First of all check if your persist folder is missing the bin file I have mentioned. If it is, You have to extract that file from persist.img or You can just download the one I uploaded. Then you must edit it and insert your mac address and after that you just have move it to the persist folder using a root explorer.
I could not flash persist.img, bootloader was always returning an access denied message, so i figured a way to explore the persist.img file using LinuxReader and extracted the WCNSS_qcom_wlan_factory_nv.bin from it.
So basically i ''flashed'' persist manually. Copy, edit, paste.

Thanks
Fixed
I have 2 days searching the solution and try with so many files.
Thanks

Please, could someone explain me exactly (for n00b like me) how to solve this problem?

Solved

Im lost on how to do this... do i just extract the file to the persist folder??

I formated /persit folder also, tried install stock rom, but no success with wifi
The problem is: i have no persist folder inside root and when i try to create it, the folder was gone after reboot.
Bootloader dont let me flash persist.img
What can I do?
Could someone help me, please?

When I try to "fast boot flash persist persist.img", I get a permission denied. Am I missing something?

Wi fi problem
Hi guys,
i've a Moto G 16 Gb purchased on Amazon.De, so german phone. I live in italy and when i connect to wi fi no problem. When i go in switzerland and i try to connect to another wi fi net (my girlfriend's line) provided by Swisscom, it doesn't work: well, i insert passoword, but it cant connect ... i called Swisscom, they tried to reset router and so on , but still persist this problem. The person (swiss) that sells me the phone (i bought it as used) said that he has the swiss provider Cablecom and it didn't have any problem. I'm fully stock with 4.4.2 . Anyone has any idea? thank you
ps: with my galaxy s3 i have no problem both in italy and in switzerland

Can anyone help in explaining the above?
....to a relative newbie? I've downgraded from 4.4.2 down to 4.3 and now my wi-fi is not working anymore, the MAC address is lost.
I'd really, really appreciate any help with regards to the procedure in going about fixing the 'Persist Folder' .
Thank you for reading.

Please make any method to solve Persist folder
Downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.3 XT1034 UMTS...

I'm sorry, but can you please elaborate? I'm have this wifi issue and it's really annoying.
You say to extract the file from persist.img, but where exactly do I find that? The file you uploaded is not persist.img.
How would I edit and insert my mac address?
Where is this persist folder? I can't find it anywhere.
If you could respond that'd be great.

You'll find persist folder at /persist.
You need filemanger with root permission, the you can see this folder.
So copy WCNSS_qcom_wlan_factory_nv.bin to your SD card. Use your filemanger to copy this file to /persist.
Activate wi-fi, the you'll find your mac adress under Settings > About Phone > Status > Wi-fi MAC Adress
Open WCNSS_qcom_wlan_factory_nv.bin on your phone with a text editor and type your mac adress inside that file and save it.
I have not tried it because i did not have this issue. But this is the way how i understood it.

simply copied the file in /persist, set permissions and rebooted
No MAC adress to enter
Works fine now

Thanks, very much!
You resolved me
Only its the put the WCNSS in the /persist folder and OK.
(You need to have the firmware with /persist).

Help with a chinese model phone, A101, deleted /system/bin/sh..

Hello all,
Firs I like to apologies if I've posted in the wrong section of the forum.
As the title says, I have a Iglo A101 with GingerBread 2.3.4 phone and I accidently deleted the system/bin/sh file.
I was searching for a2sd and I downloaded it, but when running it, instead of pressing 1 - "install a2sd" I pressed 2 "uninstall a2sd", by mistake, and by the time I realized the sh file was deleted. Now the phone is no longer rooted and can't be rooted and also my Wi-Fi doesn't work anymore.
I've search the net for answer but I can't find a solution to this type of phone.
Could someone help me fix this or at least get the Wi-Fi working again?
Thanks in advanced...
OK, I've manage to contact the retailer and he gave me what appears to be the all system files, as now I have a rar containg system.img userdata.img recovery.img etc etc. How do I install this files, because he doesn't appear to know either. I tried from the recovery mode using install update.zip from sdcard but it give's me invalid OTA package and I can't find an answer on how to flash a img file from recovery mode...

Does the device have fastboot? If so the files need to flashed using fastboot. The command is fastboot flash boot boot.img
Fastboot flash system system.img.
If your device does not have fastboot then you will need to extract the system.img and make a flashable .zip so you can flash through CWM or whatever your recovery is. If you are using stock recovery then I eexpect you will either need to find a solution or send it off for repair. I will have a look into helping you get your device back up and running but I cant promise to succeed. Give me a few days and I will report back with any solutions or info to get you on your way to fixing your device.

hi
i had similar problem on this device a101 i did not delete any folder but by rooting the device my wifi and Bluetooth stoped working.i solved the problem by the factory menu.....have you tried it?
i did factory reset, but since there a system file missing it doesn't solve it..Can't there be a way to create an update.zip package with the sh file and then apply like an update from recovery? I've been trying to understand what does invalid OTA package mean, I think if that would be solved then I could easily put the file back...
i think you need spb launcher
i have to admit i used it only ones before for china 5388 there i needed com + usb cable here you need just a normal cable us the boot on this phone is different i have all you need give me email i will send to you. i have scater for a101 file too.i never used it but i have.Us i said my phone work ok after reset from factory mode

My only way of doing was installing the CyanogenMod ROM 11, it comes with a good File Manager and Super User permissions. Thus unable to find the folder and the file inside it.
I just connected the phone to PC and put the file inside it .. Then I went to the manager .. I released Super User options .. I marked the file in the main folder .. I went to the Root Folder .. After I entered "/ persist ".. pasted the file inside it .. I took a reset through the normal system settings and when he returned was already running again.
I hope it helps those who do not understand very well, just like me.
Below is the picture of how I found the folder. PS. The file is already there because I put.
Sorry for the english guys, i'm from Brazil. Google Translator!

Persist image corrupt ?

Hi, i own an Oneplus 8 India Version.
As soon as i purchased the first thing I did was to take the persist.img backup as that seemed to be an important thing to do from my reading through the articles.
After a few months now, I seem to be in need of using this image and realized the image file is not accessible. from the articles and videos I read/seen, everyone is able to EXTRACT the image file using the 7zip or similar tools. However, i am unable to extract using any of the tools.
I took the latest persist.img from the already troubled device and that too is not working. 7zip says "Can not open the file ...."
command i used was this :
dd if=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/persist of=/sdcard/persist.img
similarly, i manually copied the file using root file manager aad that too is giving the error
Please help
Fastboot flash persist persist.img
I believe that's how you would restore persist.
I could be very wrong. Proceed with caution and I'm not liable if you break it.

Hi thank you. The concern is related to the image not being extracted. From what i have read and seen in YouTube too is they are able to extract the img file. But my files are not readable.

There was a thread in this forum that mentioned the persist cannot be shared or doesn't work with others. Apparantly it contains sensor calibration data which usually will be unique.
Can someone confirm if your persist image is extractable with 7zip or similar. If so what am i doing wrong.

You need to be unlocked and rooted. Then you will reboot to fastboot. From there, BOOT twrp (fastboot boot twrp.img)
Once booted, use TWRP to backup persist.img

Using root explorer i copied the persist image but that too was un extractable. The persist image that i took backup using the command in OP when i bought the device also doesn't extract.
And one more thing is TWRP doesn't seem to be working with 11 OS yet.

Need to downgrade to 10.
I pulled my persist image off of 10.
---------- Post added at 07:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:08 PM ----------
From what I've read there's not reason to unzip the persist.img
If you backed it up with a WORKING persist present, then you simply need to boot to fastboot and flash your persist.img
It will replace the corrupted partition and you're good to go. No one on any forum I read said they actually extracted anything from the persist.img file itself.
They all had to extract (see backup) the WORKING persist.img and flash that with fastboot command.
You can extract working persist.img with the following command in adb:
dd if=/dev/block/by-name/persist of=/sdcard/persist.img
This will save it to your sdcard. Transfer that backup to your adb folder on pc. Reboot into fastboot and use the following command to flash it:
fastboot flash persist persist.img
I do have working persist. There is a youtube video regarding same issue and ye extracted files from working persist. Your steps are clear and thank you for that .
My reason for asking was. If my files are corrupted i may damage more than solving. Hopefully the files i have are good.

How to change MAC address ?

Hello, it turns out that yesterday I was changing ROM's but there came a time where to enter the configuration of one of them I realized that I could no longer turn on the wifi, the first thing I suspected is that it was mac address problem so I went to check and indeed, had a mac 02:00:00:00:00:00, then I thought that flashing again with the stock rom would be fixed but to no avail, what can I do to change to a functional MAC ?
Hint: Replace this thread's absolutely sensless title by How to change MAC address ?
Hi, the error was that the wifi folder (located inside /persist) had been deleted, I simply had to modify the stock rom to repair that folder when flashing, that solved my problem.
