Hi again guys!
Ever since the ATT update usb connecting to the phone in ubuntu is sporadic and unreliable. I can usually get my photos off of it. Sometime I can even get into a non-root basic filesystem as well
However this isn't my main problem. I want to root the phone and install custom ROM's etc... Tried the VMware and a version of windows and installed the samsung drivers to XP but have trouble (again) with the usb and VMware.
Any help would be appreciated.
Additionally I'm pretty pissed off about the update thing. I don't care about tethering per se but that underhanded **** is why I dumped microsoft in the first place. I'll dump ATT too and spend my money elsewhere.

Linux user here. I haven't had the problems you describe. I have lately been using ES File Explorer to copy to and from a shared folder on my desktop. avoiding the USB for file transfers all together. when I do connect via USB I usually use ' adb push' and 'adb pull' to move files around.
To Root your phone there is an 'update.zip' method that I used (no computer needed)
There is also a tool called ClockworkMod Recovery that you can use to install custom rom's and create nandroid backups. (no computer needed)
And finally if you manage to screw up and can not boot, you can use Heimdall on linux like you would use Odin on Windows.

I was thinking about exactly what you wrote. Why not do it the linux way? Admittedly my skills are weak.
Had a little trouble with the update.zip but went to the wiki (again) and the info on how to do it from the phone was there. BTW the wiki has improved since last week.
Rooted phone and installed Titanium Backup and Clockwork Recovery. In my excitement I deleted all the ATT bloatware before backing them up and the ROM. Oh well... Too bad.
Now I just feel great about my phone. Needs some customization but no hurry. Only thing was that TB prompted me to go to settings/applications/ and tick "unknown sources". Doesn't exist.

linux newb here but i try

the phone can mount to a vm in dowload mode for use with odin or in kies mtp mode as long as debugging is off, otherwise it likes to mount to the host pc as a drive, i dont know a work around but you can make the phone a shared folder with the vm client so you can see the files in the vm, it'll be seen as a network location in that case.
it can mount as a drive in linux but you need to select to mount from the phone. i was having problems with it in eclair in windows and didnt try it in linux but froyo is working great. in eclair it may help to try with debugging on then you can mount from the notification bar.

To enable side loading(unknown sources). I used method 5 from this post.

and here is a link to my comments on the method later in the thread regarding some punctuation corrections.
This method uses adb from the SDK to pull the settings.db file off and edit it using sqlite3 before pushing it back on.
I believe you can edit the file directly on your phone once you have root and install a terminal app from the marketplace.
The above forum post is also in the wiki you referenced previously. basically you want to look for methods to "enable side loading"

I'm using Ubuntu and have had no problems. Rooted and removed market restrictions without a hitch.
In progress upgrading to 10.10 64bit. Will see, but right now my machine sees my phone but it won't mount. Though I haven't tried to force it.

On the phone I leave my usb settings set to ask on connection. And then chose 'mass storage' when it asks. It then mounts /sdcard as an external drive. (make sure you haven't left usb debuging on)

Oh I've tried it all-wichaways! That hasn't worked either. The card(s) are seen but no longer mount like they used to. When I choose media player I get this message on the phone: PC connection only available in idle screen. Close all running applications. I think something may be corrupted on the phone.
Before I start flashing anything I'm going to give 10.10 a go. Ubuntu specifies that 10.10 plays nice with Android. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble with my startup disks and have wasted three of them on three different downloads. Won't fully boot. Unfortunately, I've had this experience before with other releases, and it almost always was something being wrong with the .iso that was downloaded. Even tried a usb startup and same experience.

Make sure you burn your disks at a slow speed. Like 4x. Also try downloading over a stable wired connection. Use the md5 tool to check your download and your burn. If you can figure out when it is getting corrupt you have a fighting chance.
Reporting back. Finally got 10.10 to boot from a usb flashdrive by disabling the BootParameters. I guess 10.10 is so cutting edge my 2.5 yo toshiba can't boot it easily.
Reinstalled 10.04 without a hitch and since I didn't format my /home still kept everything. But I tried connecting by usb before any updates. No worky. And not after the 256M of updates either.
It's the phone I'm sure. Not really keen on flashing the ROM yet just to fix this. Recollection is that Samsung didn't put a good effort into this part of the phone. But I think again..
Why not eschew the usb for file transfers? I've got Bluetooth and wifi right here. Who needs clunky old usb? Adhoc network?
Ideas? Wifi would be easiest since my laptop doesn't have Bluetooth.

I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I use an app called ES File Explorer (free in the market) to navagate to a shared folder on my desktop.
My (samba) shared folder has no restrictions and works well. Only issue is I have to fix ownership and permissions on things copied over to the computer from the phone. If you choose to password protect yours let me know how that works out for you.

OK thanks. I'm going to investigate this. I take it ESFE works over the 3g connection as long as the host (my laptop) is connected to the internet?

It supports FTP for sure. I'm no security expert but I doubt its a good idea to share a samba share over the internet.
If you want remote access to you desktop there are secure methods for that. The method I would choose would depend on my desire/need for a remote connection.
If I just want to access my shared folder I would probably set up a VPN connection and then use ES FileExplorer.
To fully control the computer, use VNC or other "remote desktop" application.
Been reading up on Samba. It is the linux way lol. Also, I went and got a Bluetooth micro-adapter. Installed drivers from the repository.
Transferred some pics and music back and forth. All GUI based. Worked first time. I'm still this side of the learning curve but my base needs are met.
The Bluetooth works great but I'd like to learn a bit more about the wifi. Seems to me one should be able to move files with a VPN via the wireless adapters and no router. I just lack the knowledge and skill to do it.
But thanks for reminding me about the ES FileExplorer! As far as the permissions in Ubuntu for the shared folder I just checked the box under right-click- sharing options allow others to create and delete files from this folder. I think that works.
Connected the Xoom 2, to a windows 7 machine.
Insists on letting installing 'Motocast' which I let it...what a complete pile of shi*.
I want to 'sync' a 700MB .avi video, over usb cable, to the device...estimated time? 30 minutes!!! I swear this complete toss of software is insisting to re-encode the entire file to some bullsh*t format of their choice. Is there an option to turn this off and transfer it natively?
Secondly, thankfully, it also installs native 'portable' device drivers, allowing Windows 7 file explorer to browse the device. Great, so I copy the same .avi file and paste it to the device...'Do you want to copy xyz.avi? Your device might not be able to play this file' I am prompted...'yes' I click. Just as it finishes copying (after about 4 minutes...much better) it bombs out, notifying me that because the device cannot play this file it is cancelling the transfer...wtf?!?!
The only interim solution i've found is renaming the extension '.avi' to something like '.proprietrysoftwarecansuckmyballs', copying it, then renaming it back to '.avi' once transfer has completed solves this.
So can anyone offer any 'clean' solutions to my file transfer woes? If theres no improvement, this device will be getting returned next week, which is a shame as the tablet is a great bit of kit, its just a shame the software blows.
Look for "Wi-Fi File Explorer" in the market.

Had this problem myself, looks like it doesn't come with the drivers. After a bit of searching, I found that the standard driver package works:

Installed that, unplug the USB cable and put it back in - should work fine!

Hey thanks man, that worked a treat.
Just for clarification, does you still prompt you that the device may not support playback of the file, but then successfully transfer it (whereby it would previously error at the last second)?
No idea - haven't had that particular part of the issue myself - the main thing I had was the slowness...

That's the only usb-way i come up with. I'am on snow leopard and Google's Android File Copy tool does not work.

I guess the same way will work to linux too . Xoom2 has only one partition on the disk ? that the reason not to be able to mount it as a normal usb ? If you root the device is the anyway to great a small 2 Gb for ex partition to use it for easy transfer ?

As a Linux User I hoped being able to use MTP... But I tried mtpfs and mtp-tools on several distributions without any luck.
But what is worse is that FTP server applications won't work too! I tried SwiFTP, FTPServer, and some other: the servers are not reachable. It appears that not even a single ping can reach the tablet. I think Motorala have put some kind of firewall in it (maybe it has something to do with the netflix HD certification?).
For me this tablet is actually useless. If I can't find a way to transfer some files on it without using MotoCast today or tomorrow, I will bring it back to the supplier...

You probably hit it on the head about the Netflix certification. I would think about returning it, man.

Thanks to a French forum (frandroid, in the Xoom 2 topic... sorry I can't send links here), I tested a solution to the transfer problem: It is possible to use (on the computer) a server to share the files such as a samba server.
It works fine. But it's not as easy to browse, select, copy and paste file with explorers on the tablet than it is on computers (several windows, keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl-c/v, and so on).
But it's now possible to exchange files with the Xoom 2ME without going through a cloud or using Windows/motoCast.

Sorry for answering so late.
The screen is quite good.
The battery life is terrible compared to my ipad2. Charging needs a lot of time and is very slow. I guess it's because of mini usb only.
Currently i'am using the device as a Kindle Fire replacement, because off the lightweight (KF is heavier and bulky). The books i usually read have more weight than the device itself.
I like it for that.
But i may not be a good adviser because my device is a prototype. It is not smooth and the speakers are terrible.
I think 8,2" is the perfect size for me. The weight is so much better than any other tablet i had.

Try using a terminal on the Xoom 2 and ping the computer you're trying to connect to, while pinging your Xoom 2 from that computer at the same time. It's like you have to force them to see each other before they can start connecting in future.
I used fileexpert to see and download files with smb shared folder on Ubuntu Linux without a problem.

I have been really frustrated with attempts to transfer media to my phone over MTP. On Ubuntu Linux - none of the methods work very well - including mtpfs, go-mtpfs, etc.
So I figured to use the method that Apple uses (tunneling TCP over USB) by way of ADB.
So I ran a ssh server on my phone (sshdroid, but anything should work), made sure that

showed up my device, setup a port forward on my laptop using

, ran filezilla and connected to localhost on port 2222 and transferred all my media.
I got a 1.2 mbps transfer rate using my 2008 laptop. I am now planning to setup rsync over ssh to sync my music.
Here lies my frustration - Apple figured out the TCP over USB method almost a decade back, adb and ssh works well beautifully. Why did Google make the decision of going with MTP, as opposed to building something around SSH - which already has solved most of the problems around file transfer, mounting drives and sync.
Really frustrating.
EDIT: forgot to add that this should work for other devices like Samsung S3, Nexus 7 , etc. - but I personally have only my HOXL to test with.

So you are essentially frustrated with the fact that you have the flexibility to discover your own solutions and that google facilitates this by providing you both a working file transfer method but the option to do it better? Honestly, I'm not sure that I would want to carry around not only my device but a USB stick with portable versions of a FTP client/adb for linux/windows/OS X just to be able to transfer files to/from in a pinch. Most OSs will be able to deal with an MTP device and this allows google to both not need to separate the space into space for your data/apps and allows for google to use ext file systems. There was some thought put into that decision believe it or not.
I just use FTP though my file browser.

Actually you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I completely understand the rationale for Google wanting to do away with MSC (yes - I have read the Dan Morrill interview as well). And I'm not proposing that you carry around ADB.
what I am fundamentally asking is the rationale to choose MTP as a protocol, when a viable and far superior alternative exists. OSes are NOT able to work with MTP effectively, because it was never intended to do what we need from our devices today.
On the other hand, most OSes already work with TCP and SSH very effectively and in an extremely highly performant way. It would have been trivial for Google to build a TCP/SSH service inside the Android core and make available client services (similar to usbmux) that would have worked seamlessly across all platforms.
I am seriously questioning the choice of MTP as a protocol, because it is not too efficient.
I don't get it, why not just mount your SD and drag and drop your files? Am I missing something here?

I'm on windows and think mtp is horrible. That's why I just use ftp now if a rom opts for mtp (JB).

The One X does not allow you to mount your internal memory as a USB drive. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Samsung S3 (even though it has a microsd ) does not allow the same.
The only way you can access data is through the phone using a protocol called MTP - it sort of pretends to mount your phone as a USB drive, but that's not what it is actually doing.
the USB drive mode is called MSC - the reason why Google decided to move away is written here
FTP and SFTP are good - You can do exactly that using the USB as the carrier (using my method) instead of the wireless network. So what you said does not make my proposal useless.
What I wanted to show was that there is a perfectly alternative way in which you can transfer files without using the wireless network (basically using the USB as a network). I am willing to stand my ground that that allows for a far superior (and much more omnipresent) protocol to transfer files. What you use on top of TCP-over-USB is upto you : SSH, SCP, FTP - all are viable.
Secondly, I like the fact that when I'm transferring all these files, my regular wifi/3g network is unthrottled.

We all have the the One XL which does allow for our storage to be presented as a block device. The One X might be different?

I'm assuming you are on Windows.
What you are seeing is your computer talking to the phone over MTP and presenting it as a block device. If you are able to use your phone's storage (both main as well as the "/sdcard") while you are transferring content on your phone, then it is the MTP mode.
MTP not only brings bad performance, but it also doesnt work across all platforms and screws with fundamental things like timestamps.
Phones prior to the Galaxy Nexus used the MSC mode - a true block level mounting. There are some tradeoffs to that, which is why Google gave up on that.
The iPhone talks to the iTunes using a similar protocol to what I talked about in my OP - TCP over USB.

No, I'm not seeing that at all in windows. When I plug my phone into any linux box as well it is enumerated as a "sd" device. I'm also not able to use the storage as it is mounted. The One XL divides its internal SD card into useable space and space for apps.
This is why people are not able to understand why you have posted this here and why I'm asking if the Tegra 3 One X is perhaps different.
EDIT: It looks like the SGS 3 uses MTP.
It is enumerated as a sd device, but it is not mounted as one.
Please double check - I'm on an AT&T One XL.
MTP is the only access path.

I just mounted my phone's storage on my laptop running Slackware 14.
Showed up as a SCSI attached storage disk.
fdisk shows it as a block device. In my case sdc.
sdc mounted as vfat.
No fuse, no MTP.
On windows my Nexus 7 uses MTP. My One X shows up as an actual block device. The disk manager even sees it as a block device.

Oh - now I see what the confusion was. The HTC spoofs the MSC mode using a partition on a single disk. Read about it here. And these are some of the problems that may occur if you continue to use it as mass storage.
I would recommend that you transfer using MTP or over the network using FTP or through my method. I'm really unsure about the mass storage path.
However, what I talked about still stands - Google has moved away from mass storage completely and switched to MTP (HTC is doing a few tricks to make this easy for us)
MTP sucks.
One word: AirDroid.
Why even bother physically connecting your phone to USB anymore when you can use apps such as AirDroid (and many other apps) to get great speeds wirelessly regardless of platform? All you need is the App installed and any browser.

Why can you not just accept the fact that htc includes an excellent usb interface. It's fast and stable in "disk drive" mode. Whether it's "spoofed", "faked" or whatever you want to call it, it works great, and across all platforms.
Actually I don't think it's spoofed at all considering I can write to it in direct disk access mode in WinHex.
Anyhow, they actually did quite a bit with the usb stack. USB tethering, USB network pass-through, and Disk-Drive mode are all HTC features that I sorely miss on my MTP SGS3.
I have not seen a single user complain about Disk Drive mode. It works great.

Cab anyone help me out? I used to have a Galaxy S phone and kept some folders in sync with my PC by connecting it as a usb mass storage and using a software called Allway Sync on my PC.
Now with the note it no longer connects as mass storage. I do have Easy UMS installed but I is unstable. I can't use the cloud because of my company's IT policy.
In this way the best shot I have I guess is a Bluetooth method... can anyone suggest an app to solve this?
Try using my phone explorer from play store. Install the pc client too. You can sync via usb, wifi or bluetooth.

You could also try SyncMe Wireless
I currently use samba filesharing to make my phone appear as a drive in pc and then use microsoft sync toy.
Very fast and accurate sync...
Tried many but this has worked best for me.

Its a wireless access option via wifi and it shows the internal and external cards as a networked drive in your pc. Due to this data transfer speeds are much better than other wireless option.
I have not seen any app or mod to make note 10.1 appear as mounted disks via usb. Synctoy cannot sync when phone is mounted as media devices. However there might be other programs that might be able to do it.
Earlier versions of samsung rom(for other devices) used to have it but not anymore

That is truly a nice option. Do you know if I can use WiFi tethering to connect the note and the pc? I'm asking that because at my company we still use wired networks so I can't put both devices under the same WiFi router except for the tethering option.
I'm using FolderSync on my phone and tablet.
The best, lot of customization.
Sync through SMB, ftp, ssh, Dropbox, GDrive, etc.

I use Dropbox. There is an Android app called Dropsync which does two way sync on the note. There is a free version in the Market with file size limits to try itout.

Dropbox would be great but, as I mentioned in the first post I can't use it on my PC due to firewall restrictions at my company.
Lack of USB Mass Storage - Very Annoying
When I wrote the first question I didn´t realize the real problem... the lack of USB Mass Storage in Galaxy Note 10.1.
First of all... I cannot understand why Google decided to move from a standardized interface (USB Mass Storage) to a Microsoft crappy code designed specifically for Photos and Videos (MTP btw it means Media Transfer Protocol).
I know the "trend" is to have everything in the "cloud" but in my country 3G or 4G are still quite expensive and not all company work on full WiFi networks. The lack of such a "cloudless" sync system is in fact one of the main reasons that kept me away from Apple.
Funny thing is that Google an Sammy are copying Apple´s most annoying features... all "cloud" based, no standard sync systems (take the SNotes using Sammy proprietary cloud as an example), proprietary interfaces like the stupid 30 pin connector that needs a powered device to turn into HDMI (hilarious to say the least...)
To me the best "cloud" has always been to sync my PCs at Home and at Work using my Smartphone as the syncing device. I´m very very disappointed with the lack of USB Mass Storage on Galaxy Note 10.1.
Now a few workarounds to those living outside top countries where 4G and WiFi are everywhere...
1) MyPhoneExplorer - can be connected using bluetooth. Pros: has a dedicaded Folder Sync app. Cons: slower for larger files.
2) USB Mode Switch + Alt Mount - creates a "virtual" USB Mass Storage using cable connections - Pros: higher transfer rates. Cons: clumsy as you need to start two apps. Only mounts the internal storage. No sync system. At least I tried AllwaySync as it has a dedicaded ftp sync but couldn´t make it work.
3) SGS3 Easy UMS - Workaround for the SGS3 that works on both GN 10.1 ICS and JB. Pros: higher transfer rates. True Mass Storage that can be used with all PC Sync softwares. Cons: Easily stops working if any other app is accessing the card so usually you´ll need to restart your device to get it to work and even like that you will experience inconsistent results when connecting. Only mounts the external storage.
So we are moving forward but the holly grail isn't quite there yet... hope those apps help someone who is as disappointed on Android as I am.

Does not work with note 10.1 on stock based roms
I'm using Bitorrent Sync now, works great.
I tried the search, but it's down.
Anyone know if it's possible or a good alternative way to access files on your SDCARD from your computer?

you only have a few options
the main 3: ADB, MTP, FTP.
There are issues with the drive not showing up. I'm having the same problem.
MTP=error
PTP= works, but is mostly useless.

Edit: Simply removing my existing android device from device , along with the "delete driver" option fixed it. (windows 7)
I had the "universal adb driver v.72"
Noticed the Google driver has support for the nexus 5 as well.

Edit2: adb also works out of the box with the google driver.
WiFi File Transfer is a good alternative https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smarterdroid.wififiletransfer&hl=nl. Airdroid is also a very good app for wireless file transfers.
Grab a ftp server to run on your phone is an alternative, but Wi-Fi transfer rates are often quite bad compared to usb.
I'm very satisfied with mtp, I nearly never transfer files between computer and phone.

What version of windows. If it is a version without media center such as N mtp will NOT work. Same issue happened to me.
