Error message after attempting to downgrade from Android 4.3 to 4.1.2 on SCH-I535 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm having a bit of an issue here with my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III where I tried to downgrade from Android 4.3 to 4.1.2. I used Odin and the 4.1.2 firmware that matches my device and when the process was finished Odin indicated that it was a failure and now my phone is not able to turn on, and gives an error message stating that "Firmware upgrade has encountered an issue. Please use Software Repair Assistant & try again." I'm not sure what Software Repair Assistant is exactly so I haven't tried anything regarding that. Also I tried entering download mode but then clicking the volume down button so that it restarts the phone.
Thanks.

Once you are on 4.3, the bootloader is locked, you can't downgrade or install custom rom/kernel recovery. The only thing you can do is root. If you want to flash a few available rom you will need to install safestrap. Back to your issue:

So I tried the soft brick tutorial and that seemed to have fixed the problem. I'm also interested in this safestrap you mentioned. How does it work? If I want to get something like PACMan ROM on my GS3 that runs 4.3, how do I use it in order to do that?

Currently its very limited, only works with TW ROM, so you need to wait a little bit longer since they are working on a patch for custom ROM for safestrap.

I tried this method, and it did work. However, I messed something up again, and this time it won't go into download mode for some reason. Also the phone didn't come with a micro SD card so I don't have one on me.

I misread your indication that there is absolutely no way to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.1.2, so I tried re-downgrading back to 4.1.2 using a different tutorial (which I no longer have the link for), and this is what ended up happening to my phone.

How many GB should the SD card be?

The Sd card needs to be the same size as your phones internal memory. It would do you good to really read and research before messing with your phone. This particular section (Verizon s3 troubleshooting and questions) is FULL of threads about people bricking because they failed to read that you can't downgrade or you'll brick. I know that doesn't sound very nice, and please don't take it personally...It's not meant to be.

[Q] Houston, boy do I have a problem!

Just rooted my new SGS3 using New Root Method Released for Verizon’s Galaxy S3, No Odin Required. i did the data & kelvic wipe then install Clean Rom 5.0. All progressed without a hitch. Even backed up with CWM prior to flash.
I rebooted into the new rom and got this: System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless... rebooted several time with same result.
What can I do now? Thanks for your help.
Just a wild guess, but me thinks your bootloader is still locked! But I'm not sure that will even apply because I rooted my device before unlocking the bootloader. But I rooted my device via ODIN first.
You can try EZ-Unlock via the Market. The GUI is still very buggy and will show the status as unknown but the internal workings of the app works good.
You got nothin to loose in trying. Go back to stock and give it another whirl after you've unlocked the bootloader.
Of that fails then I would suggest using the tried and true method..ODIN.
G'luck!
yup your bootloader is still locked
check the downloads thread and use version 1.2.
That means your boatloader is locked. You now must Odin back to stock and start over. Droid style has a guide stickied in the development thread. Follow section 6 of it.
Next time use ez unlock version 1.2 to unlock you boatloader.

You have to get into DOWNLOAD MODE.. Power+ Volume Down+ Home key at the same time after a fresh battery pull.
Do a search on the Development forum to set up Odin on your PC.

Hi, I have a Verizon S3 flashed to Boost Mobile. I tried to gain root by flashing a stock rooted Rom and messed up the flash. I had to take it back to be flashed again Now I'm more cautious before hand. I should have backed it up before attempting it, I know I know lol can anyone shed some light on how to update a flashed phone as well as how to root it. I could really use the help
Also after I messed up the boost flash I paniced and flashed a sprint kernel hoping this would fix the problem. Since then anything that I've tried to view including taking camera shots and web browsing if done in landscape mode will be upside down, any remedy for this problem? I know now... root first, flash later.

So it flashed successfully in Odin? You don't boot back into your rom, you pull the battery then continue onto the next step after putting the phone back into Download mode.

So you flashed the bootchain in PDA, waited for the tar file to flash, your S3 rebooted on its own and it would not boot back up? Or did something else happen? I've used that thread and many others as you can see in there with no issues.
Cuz unfortunately that sounds like a hard brick and there's two ways of recovering from that. The first way is doing this which requires you to have a class 10 sdcard that is the same size as your phone's internal storage. The other way is paying and shipping it off to a third party service like MobileTechVideos.

[Q] bricked and terrified 4.3

okay i upgraded to 4.3 OTA and tried to revert back and soft bricked my phone. I still have access to download mode and the stock recovery. I know now that i can not revert but is there any way of getting it back to 4.3 so i can have a phone again?
thanks for the future help.
This is similar what happened to me. I have never done anything with my phone as far as rooting and I tried reverting to stock 4.1.2. In Odin I kept getting the "Nand Start! Fail (Auth)" because of the locked bootloader I guess. I flashed some other firmware that was unofficial with the locked bootloader and now I get the "unauthorized software detected" and I cant do anything but enter Odin download mode. What should I do?
that is exactly what is happing to me. same error and all.
Once you took the OTA 4.3 you got locked in. No way of going back.

im having the same problem and need to get it fixed please help anyone???!!!! im leaving for florida in two days and have nothing else. HELP!!!!
If you took the OTA and tried to flash 4.1.2 Odin or unlock bootloader you are Hard bricked , no method or recovering it yet.
If you have stock recovery and download mode , only hope is wait for 4.3 .tar file
Theres no custom recovery I can flash and flash some other software or something?

Not to mention it is basically fraud, and is the main reason Verizon decided to start locking down phones in the first place.
I understand everyone is taking risks when flashing custom, and flashes can go wrong even when you do everything right, but there is VERY little chance of bricking your phone if you take your time and do a bit of research before you hit any buttons. And if you do manage to brick your phone, man up and pay for a new phone or pay for it to be fixed. Otherwise stop treating your $600 piece of technology like a toy.

The first time I ever rooted, I was worried about bricking. So i read everything I could find relevant.
Why in the world anyone would flash without reading is beyond me. Every single thread in Verizon Galaxy S3 at least mentions, if not totally devoted, to how bad 4.3 is and if you flash something on it you will brick.
I just don't get it.

If you can access ODIN mode, then there's a script that fixes bricks like that. Look around the VZW Galaxy S3 threads.
And if you actually read around, people kept telling others that the bootloader is locked. So trying to use EZ Unlock is a BIG NO. That's why it bricked.
If you stuck to stock Android 4.1.2, then there would be no issue with using EZ Unlock. But since you're on stock Android 4.3, that's a big no. You'll definitely get bricked like the way you are right now.
If you truly are hard hard bricked maybe you will get insperation for a fix. NOT FOR THE S3 OR SAMSUNG but maybe helpful http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522351

Oh and as far as telling people about "reading around"...no where did I see when reading about this ez unlock any mention of it bricking devices on 4.3! Are there any debrick files that anyone on here has used to unbrick this thing or what? As of right now...the phone is hardbricked to the point that odin doesn't recognize it...any ideas or help maybe using linux ...a nice step by step would be cool! thanks

First of all, you're not supposed to even try to unlock the boot loader if you accepted the 4.3 OTA. The reason your phone got bricked was because you tried to unlock the boot loader after getting the 4.3 OTA. Don't blame the EZ unlock app for your mistakes.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166
A link by Spyro for you in case you can't access the boot loader or ODIN mode at all. If you're able to get into ODIN mode, Pagel has a thread that explains how to fix that too. All you have to do is look.
Pagel's thread.

I have tried the first link method, it didn't work. I believe it's new hard brick because of ez unlocked. I don't blame ez unlocked, I should think before I try it. Thank you for your help,.

OK..I was DEAD in the water. Spent the last 2 days trying to un-brick the phone.
Samsung S3, VZW i535, Rooted, partially un-bloated, and unlocked until [email protected]$#! upgraded itself to Android 4.3 (#@!%$!#%@#$%@#$%@#$)
Unwittingly while trying to do a full Nandroid backup of the system, I ran across a problem which looked like it needed to be unlocked again. Upon unlocking it still worked, until I attempted the CWM recovery backup - Instant Black Screen power off.
Unresponsive to Power. Unresponsive to Power+Home+Vup - Unresponsive to Power+Home+Vdn. Not visible to ODIN or to USB...it would have a red-light when plugging in ISB for about 5 mins, then red light off. No vibration, no flicker of the screen, nothing. 100% UNResponsive phone.
I attempted a Jog - No Dice. Forget it.
I attempted to use WinDisk32 to create an image of "Verizon_Galaxy_S_3_Debrick.img" to the SD Card from the video of the kid thats 10:22 long, and his second video thats 12+ min long. Nope. Nada (I attempted at least 20 times)
His video ONLY works from pre 4.3 upgraded phones. He spent so much time doing that video he should add the extra link to the other debrick.bin file and he would be a guru!!! hehe
Attempted a few other thing as well since I now was sure it was fully hard-bricked FUBAR.
Then I kept thinking to myself that it must have something to do with Android 4.3 and its bootloader...came here again and found this thread which lead me to the "After 4.3 upgrade" file of "Debrick.bin" - Used WinDisk32 to the SAME SD card, stuck it in, stuck battery in, and worked first time.
Can Only boot with SD card in phone for time being but hey, im 100% up. And I also can make the SD card back to its full 16GB using SDFormatter - free on the net.
Thank you all.
note: I think we need a new term: "Hard-Soft-Bricked" - reason is that if the power buttons still send a signal to the board to attempt a boot from the CD Card, then its technically still responsive, we just cant see that its responsive. Unlike a total hard-brick that isnt really doing anything from the buttons at all and only responds to a powered JTAG attempt.
ez bricker...
Hi i have the vzw s3 and used ez unlocker 1.2 to unlock the bootloader and it said "that was easy" then the phone was bricked ...also worth noting im on jb 4.1.2
Need help from Hard Brick
My phone is bricked after unlock bootloader via EZ-Unlocker. How Can I Un-brick my phone.
I tried SD card method but failed.
My Phone OS was: 4.4.2
Model: SGH-i535
Having exact same problem as the person above... Used ez unlocked 1.2 and the phone does not do anything now... Not odin recovery, not booting, nothing.... Tried the sd trick but did not work. Please kindly help me if there is something else....
Thank you very very much!

I try a usb JIT ... doesn't work ...
Did you try with a 4.4.2 debrick.img to your SD ?
My Phone OS was: 4.4.2

here's what is on the apps page on rootzwiki <----- idk if im spelling it right
Since I know a lot of people do not thoroughly read threads or posts, I am again posting my warning at the bottom of the OP:
***Admin Edit*** - This app has not been updated since 2012 and does not work on any bootloaders since the ML1 4.3 OTA. If you have taken the 4.3 OTAs of ML1 or NC1 or the 4.4.2 OTA of NE1, do not download and try to use this app to unlock your bootloader. You will hard brick your device. The app is no longer even available on the play store.
Dont ever try ez unlocker
Exactly same problem was with me. tried unlocking bootloader of SCH-I535 and got it HARD BRICKED
SD card tricks wont work. The only solution is JTAG. My device remains at the repairing shop for 3 MONTHS. it goes from shop after shop and another shop... and after 3 months i get it back. and still its Wifi was not working and also the network signals drop frequently
lets give some tips for feature tries if u on 4.3+ dont bother trying to unlock u wont only brick trust me ive tried
1 never ever erase your modem or boot partion if u do u cant reboot u phone into download mode hard bricked send it in to get fixed
think only way fix it in this state is bootloader already unlocked lol so if locked forget trying does no good
im on 4.4.2 stock bootloader still locked can be rooted easy useing odon it works but u cant do upgrades ota after rooted so be happyy with your changes cause there whay u set it stays problem with customs id the google store apps dont all work like google camery my fav dont work on alot them stock works grat so far no custom beats 4.4.2 yet cept in maybe promtness but got bugs in stor and camera cant go with my cam or music google store are a must
This will fix the Problem

Above it is stated that the sdcard debrick images do not work. If that is true in your case the only option available may be a jtag service.

No, this app did not make your mobile dead. You not doing the proper research and reading before trying to use this app made your mobile dead. Your fault not the fault of the app.

bro shouldn't this app give a warning popup message to user when we open this app that "don't try this app on Android 4.4.2 this app will brick your phone"

In the app? Nope. The app has long since been removed from the Play Store. Also, the original place this app was distributed has a bright red warning indicating users on 4.3 and 4.4.2 should not use it:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32456-ap...lock-your-bootloader-pre-43-bootloaders-only/
Edit: I'm referring to "EZ Unlock" btw. Any app by any other name, even a slight deviation in spelling, is not the original app to unlock the bootloader on a VZW S3 on 4.1.2.

Updated to 4.3 without realizing on rooted S3 now bricked

I have a Verizon S3 and saw a new symbol in my notification bar and stupidly clicked on it without really thinking and my phone tried to update to 4.3. Well after the update I get a screen that says I'm not using official verizon software or something like that and that I need to take my phone to a verizon store to fix it. I can get to the Odin downloading screen I just don't know how to fix it from there. Please help I really don't have the money to buy a new phone right now. Any advice would be welcome
It depends on what is happening to your phone. Is it working or not? Can you tell us what android version is loaded currently?

It starts up and after the samsung logo. I get the message System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help. At the top in red it also says secure fail: kernal. I believe I'm running Android 4.1.2 but I can't remember. If I hold down volume, home, and power I can get into the odin downloading screen but those are the only 2 screens I can access.

As long as you can get to the download screen, you can flash the official 4.3 with Odin. Dont try to go back to 4.1.2 or any custom rom as that will result in a hard brick.

First go into download mode and see if the boot chain flashed. If it didn't you should flash 4.1 not 4.3.
Once you're in download mode, post all the information it says in the top left corner.

You're on mf1 still.
Flash this in Odin:

Using this guide, section 5:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709
Then use this to root your phone again:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825
After this, I'd unlock the bootloader with ez-unlock version 1.2 to make sure it's unlocked.
When you reboot, find sdm1.0.apk and fwupdater.apk and rename them to sdm1.0.apk.bak and fwupdater.apk.bak. Or use titanium backup and freeze both of them. Then you don't have to worry about an update being pushed to your phone.

Ez-unlock will brick your phone if you're on the 4.3 base. In this case it will work just fine, he's on the 4.1.2 base.

locked bootloader on rooted verizon galaxy s3
my phone was rooted and i mistakenly upgraded to 4.3.
i didn't have any problems rerooting my phone.
however though the phone is rooted, from what i've read i'm going to assume my bootloader is locked.
so i've decided to seek answers from the professionals.
i have root checker, rom manager, goomanager, titanium back up, root broswer, rom installer, root explorer, android root tool, superuser, super su, quickboot, terminal emulator and the hackers keyboard.
all to no avail...everytime i try to install a custom rom a message pops up on the screen saying i have unauthorized software on my phone and that i need to take it to verizon. yes from recovery mode...as a matter of fact the recovery mode won't load it just takes me to the " take my phone to verizon screen "...
just to be clear i have a galaxy s3 on verizon running 4.3
phone is rooted and super su, or superuser has been granted to the necessary apps,
still everything i've tried hasn't worked.
sorry for the length but i was attempting to provide as much info as possible...
any and all help regarding this matter will be greatly appreciated...

Sounds like you're on 4.3, if that's the case then you can't install any custom roms without a special recovery.
Just to be sure, boot into download mode and type out what the text says in the top left corner. Your symptoms sound like it could be either, the install of will usually fail if you're rooted, unless everything you had was completely stock.

You're on 4.3 with a locked bootloader, meaning you can't install custom recovery, rom, kernel. The only thing available for 4.3 is root. Don't try to install custom recovery or you will brick your phone. At this time you may have a soft brick, go here to fix it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2586319

Physically type down in a reply to @BadUsername, exactly what is written when you are fully booted into download mode. Everything in the upper left of the screen where it starts with "Odin Mode" in red all caps. Someone is helping you and they can't continue to help you, unless you help them first with that info.

Here is my list:
If the OTA already downloaded, delete it here /cache/fota
To disable the OTA:
Rename or freeze the apps with Titanium backup:
otacerts.zip located in /etc/security - rename to otacerts.zip.bak
Rename fwupdate.odex, fwupdate.apk located in /system/app
and freeze SDM1.0 located in /system/app
Awesome thank you. And without TiBu? My wife uses the GS3, and I don't think she has a license for TiBu.
I guess just rename the first two with a file manager, delete the update and disable sdm1 in the app settings?
