Switching Between Roms - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am new with this Asus Transformer TF300T device and i have still lot to learn, but what i have learned is Asus make ****ty bootloaders.
The situation with my device is now with newest nighty CM 11 and Scanno TWRP with Grimlock Kernel. I tested it couple of hours and it crashed one time. I would need the device 95% to play games and rest of time surfing internet. Thats mostly what i do with device and im wondering is the CM 11 best to it or is there something better. This is first custom Rom im testing and there is a little performance upgrade since Stock Rom but not much so im thinking the problem could be the nightly build so i would like to go back to some stable roms. Battery time is not priority 1 because i can charge the tablet daily and i have keyboard to it.
But the question is what is the best and fastest rom and what is easiest way to do it? Should i allways install the latest official Asus update to device that bootloader etc. will be stock and then install TWRP or is there other way? I think Android KitKat still need lot of fixing so i could go back to Android 4.3X or Android 4.2X which have been around very much longer and maybe better fixed. The little advices how to do that would be great same as what not to do.

If you really want speed, stability, and reliability, CROMi-x is a really good option in my opinion. I always have had a preference to AOSP ROMs, because of that I use CM or PAC or Omni or AOKP. 4.2.2 based on the stock ROM seems to fit all of your needs, nightlies tend to be more cutting edge, and with that comes unpredictability.

That CROMi-x seems to be good rom but im not completely sure will it work with newest stock rom which is 10.6.1.27.5 not 10.6.1.27.1 and how i get back to stock because now i have something other? And is my TWRP wrong? There is many of questions that i cant find answer from forums which is very strange. Usually there are guides for these things.
I would like to do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2455922 to my tablet just in case but i dont know is my version right for that.
This is Exactly information from my tablet:
Model: TF300T
Android: 4.4.2
Kernel: 3.1.10 Grimlock CM_0.8
Cyanogenmod Version 11-20140120-Nightly-Tf300t
Build Number: CM_TF300T-userdebug 4.4.2 KOT49H
SELinux: Enforcing
So first things i need is how do i get back to newest stock rom 4.2.1 with 10.6.1.27.5 and will i need to install TWRP in that installing progress or how? Some help would be nice. If im correct the easiest way would be go back to Stock 10.6.1.27.1 and make the device unbreakable then flash TWRP and go to CROMI-X but i need to know how to do that. The biggest question is that TWRP.

Yes, you can do NvFlash Backups for your bootloader, I have them on mine. If you want some clarification, you can look here: [URL="http://goo.gl/aM2M3y"]http://goo.gl/aM2M3y
[/URL]
You can do NvFlash from the CM11 ROM you are on right now. Once you do that, you can reflash TWRP 2.6.3.1 and then factory reset from the recovery and then install CROMi-x.

CROMi-X works fine and is based from 10.6.1.27.5

Hi!
I cant post to android developement so i have to ask here. Does the CM11 OTA work if i have Grimlock kernel instead of the CM kernel and does it works if some of gapps etc have been deleted?
I would like to have some help how to do this: "You can do NvFlash from the CM11 ROM you are on right now. Once you do that, you can reflash TWRP 2.6.3.1 and then factory reset from the recovery and then install CROMi-x. "
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47902196#post47902196
What if i dont have "That is for stock Android Versions: 10.6.1.15.3 - 10.6.1.27.1." i have 10.6.1.27.5 or at least i had before i upgraded to CM or did the bootloader stays the same when upgrading to CM? Just does not show on the screen?
Sorry that my answering took so long here but i had other issues to do first Now i have time to play with this tablet. But the Cromi-X is what im going to have in my device but i need some help with it.

INDEX [UPDATED10/23/13] ASUS Transformer Infinity(TF700) ROMs/Tweaks/Guides Directory

The Unofficial Transformer Infinity(TF700) ROM & Kernel Listings v 2.0
Updated 10/23/2013
It is finally time for a complete re-write of the guide, so here goes. Hopefully this will make it easier to follow and use!
HOW-TOs
Rooting & Tuning/Tweaking 1
Rooting & Tuning/Tweaking 2
Unlocking
Development Guide
I take no credit for the work represented here, and no credit for the idea, and no credit for incredible amount of work that has gone into figuring out how to cook tasty ROMs for the TF700. This is just an attempt to provide a quick and easy starting point for users looking for ROMs and their details.
If you have any [ROM/KERNEL] specific question ask in the appropriate thread for that. Please do not post them in the thread for this listing as you are not as likely to get your question answered as quickly as you would in the appropriate thread.
Glossary
Rooting: This is an operation that you do to a device that gives you "Root" level access to your tablet or phone or whatever. Other terms for this may be "SuperUser", it means you have access to the entire device, including areas that the manufacturer or provider may not want you to have access to.
Unlocking: Unlocking is the step past rooting, where you "unlock" your bootloader. This gives you full access to the bootloader, and is the second part required in order to be able to flash new ROMs. **MAY VOID MANUFACTURER WARRANTY
OTA: Over the Air Updates. These are the ROM updates that come directly from ASUS (or whomever built your tablet). When you root and flash you almost always lose OTAs.
Flash (or Flashing): This is where you replace the Operating System for the device with a new one. There are many reasons for flashing, Google has lots of discussions about the topic.
Bootloader: Computers have a process when you turn them on, the first part is the Bootloader which contains just enough information to tell the device where the harddrive is, etc. Accessing the bootloader is required in order to replace the ROM, or in other words to Flash your device.
Recovery: This is an important part of the Android system, it allows you to turn on the device and get ALMOST to the full ROM load. Recovery is where you go to load custom ROMs, perform full backups and many other tasks. There are several different recovery apps, two of the most popular are CWM or ClockworkMod and TWRP. Most of the ROMs you will see are supported by one or both of these.
Hopefully this little bit of information helps, of course the opinions and answers are mine alone so if you have any issues let me know!

There is an excellent thread started by Wolfman87 over in the Q&A Section talking about the confusion around OTAs, bootloaders and recoveries. The entire thread can be viewed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927095
I have taken the liberty of cross-posting an excellent summary by MartyHulskemper on the basics
ASUS Firmware updates:
* .22 was the release firmware
* .26 changed the scheduler from noop to cfq, smoothing out disk-write performance a bit, alleviating I/O issues to at least some extent; some minor app updates as well, it seems.
* .30 updated camera firmware (removing the clicking sound, amongst other minor fixes). The big thing was it updated the bootloader as well (without notice), which later turned out to prevent installation of Nvflash. This effectively shuts out those who flashed the .30 OTA or .30 manual ASUS firmware files from the added security of Nvflash... for now.
* .16 is the initial JB update
Confusion may stem from our colloquial designation for JB (.16) being out of order with the ICS builds that came before it (.22/.26/.30) -- our tendency to abbreviate anything needing more than three keystrokes has turned to shoot some people in the foot. If, however, you look at the full build number, the difference is quite evident:
.22 = ASUS firmware version 9.4.5.22 = ICS
.26 = ASUS firmware version 9.4.5.26 = ICS
.30 = ASUS firmware version 9.4.5.30 = ICS
.16 = ASUS firmware version 10.4.4.16 = JB
Bootloaders:
I believe any CM10/AOKP-based ROM will happily boot off of both the ICS and JB bootloaders. Currently, however, there seems to be no specific need or benefit to using the JB bootloader, so I'd stay away from it whenever possible.

It's just sparkym3's Debugfs method, which is linked on the site you linked to, so no need for an intermediary really.
Updated with new ROM and other link updates
Updated to include the TF300 install links for brave souls.
Not one but TWO new ROMs in the past 24 hours!!! Hopefully a great sign of things to come.
So, i moved this thread back to Development since it is well updated and i think that this can cohabit with the other sticky thread hence do not report this to us.
Hmm. I didn't get a request to confirm the uid & gid. Superuser's there & Root Explorer works but Titanium & Root Checker both think I'm not rooted.
Curses. Foiled, and I would've gotten away with it if it wasn't for those kids and that mangey dog.
I need to unroot in order to unlock my tablet.
Can that be done ?
Thanks!!!

Hi,
I'm having troubles unlocking the bootloader, i wrote ASUS VIP support, and told them my troubles.
I'm getting an error when running the unlock tool " An unknown error occurs....this may be a network issue...:"
I was told by ASUS support that i should manually update which i did, and then i needed to unroot, otherwise they thought i'm having troubles communicating with the ASUS unlock servers.
Thanks for your time, i'm dreaming of the day when i can have a custom ROM on my infinity tablet
factory reset
Can I do factory reset after I rooted my pad?
Will it work right after it? Would I can to get official updates?

I just want to tell you that it's not a Questions-Answers thread.
If you need to ask some questions about your problem, post your questions in the specific thread or Transformer TF700 Q&A
Thanks
added information covering the basics for Bootloaders and ROM versions from the Q&A Thread, very useful stuff
Should update the "how to root" portion with the fact that JB has not easy root method
I keep getting errors when trying to root with this method. Is it because im on JB? Do you have to be on Ice cream sandwich to use this method?

[Q] Hanging on ASUS Image after installing ROM

First time poster, have been searching the forums the entire weekend so I'm finally going to break down and post a question.
History:
Purchased TF300T, came with Android 4.0.3
Installed OTA to get to 4.1.1, then it updated again to 4.2.1
MobileDock keyboard does not work, after calling ASUS they want me to send in for service.
So, I've decided to dive into the custom ROMs 1. because I want to learn how to, and 2. to see if I can get the mobiledock to work.
Unlocked via ASUS website
Installed CWM but it would never read my SD card
Installed TWRP 2.4.4.0
Backed up (thank goodness, I keep going back to it)
Installed CM10.1 ROM, it installs great but gets stuck on the ASUS image screen at boot
Installed AOKP_R5 ROM, it installs great but gets stuck on the ASUS image screen at boot
I've tried lower versions of TWRP with no luck.
I've tried wiping cache, dalvk, factory, system before, cache/dalvk after installing ROMs
What am I doing wrong? I feel like I'm so close!! Thanks in advance.

The CM 10.1 and AOKP R05 are not compatible with your bootloader (4.2.1).
Sudru said he was going to release an AOKP version for the new bootloader, but you will have to wait for that.
Try flashing CleanRom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2204166
Or flash

Thanks so much I was able to load both ROMs. I really appreciate it. My mobile dock does not work with either of them but I think I'll search around for that before posting another question.

ww_epad-10.4.2.20-20121228 A03This bootloader has the 4 icons (includes the USB fastboot icon)
Recovery:
TWRP 2.5
The tablet is actually a TF300TG, but all the roms seems to be for the TF300T and I read some posts saying the only thing you lose by cross flashing is the 3g functionality - although, I also read some stating not to.
Q1. It says it's running Android 4.2.2, but the bootloader is still the old JB type - is this because it's a custom rom?
Q2. Is there anything I can do to get WiFi working on this ROM? The wifi never moves to the 'on' position.
I followed the instructions from the link in the bellow quote (the first time around I was on the new bootloader) - I tried flashing both
ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T Firmware: V10.4.2.20 Only for WW SKU (Android 4.1) - 2013.01.18 update
ASUS Transformer Pad TF300TG Firmware: V10.4.3.9 Only for WW SKU (Android 4.1) - 2012.11.14 update
and then installing AOKP, but this just leaves me back where I started.
This ROM is really nice and I would like to continue using it.
The wifi works when using the asus stock software, and I believe it also worked when trying the Hydra ROM.
Many Thanks in advance.

But will it work on roms with 4.2.1 bootloaders?

Surdu got this ROM to boot on the new bootloader but wifi doesn't work yet. I would wait on him to post the steps needed to get everything working correctly. I have a feeling that it won't be long before he has the newer version ready.
If you can't wait and want to run this ROM with everything working then you can downgrade back to the 4.1 bootloader.
Here is the thread that will tell you how to downgrade the bootloader if you decide to do so.

Q1: You can still run Android 4.2.2 on the stock 4.1.1 bootloader, and you still are using the stock 4.1.1 bootloader. CM10.1 and AOKP do this.
Q2: When you flashed AOKP (which i used for a few months), did you format cache/dalvik/factory reset?

[Q] Getting to Cyanogenmod 10.2 without bricking

I have a new tf300t with Android 4.1.1 on it and I have followed an older guide to unlock the device and it said to put clockworkmod on it and the Cyanogenmod forums indicate a problem with that, so I went TWRP instead. The twrp site said to pick the right version (-jb) and I did that.
I put 2.6.latest of twrp on and did a backup. Everything is going great. I rooted the device with SuperSU, Copied over CM 10.2.nightly and the right gapps version and it flashed fine. I booted in and I let it go for awhile and it just bootlooped. I went back into twrp and reflashed to ensure that wasn't an issue (same problem) and restored and I'm back to the beginning. I decided to try the 10.1 version on Cyanogen's site and had the same issue. I'm thinking it's the bootloader version doesn't match -- needs to be 4.2, but I want to be careful not to brick the device since a lot of people have done that.
Any guidance or pointing me at a thread would be appreciated. I have a feeling that letting the OTA update take place on the device kind of ropes me into a corner I might not want to be in. I'd really like to be on the latest Android OS *assuming* most of the tf300t features work. I can handle some odd things not working quite right.
Thanks,
Rich
Step1
It appears that my semi-direct path is to get to the newest [MINUS 1] version of 4.2.1 from Asus.
TF300T-US_epad-10_6_1_27_1-UpdateLauncher.zip
Many newer ROMS require this boot loader, and many people say to stick with the twrp 2.5.0.0 because 2.6.x.x is buggy. I can confirm that 2.6.x.x (latest), the mount feature does appear to be broken.
My only concern now is timing. Upgrade to 2.5.0.0 first, or upgrade using fastboot to the new Asus rom. It might not matter and I might need to put TRWP back on after the flash anyhow.
Also, I did root my current OS before doing this update, so it will be interesting to see if that remains intact.
Rich
Step3
I used fastboot to update and I thought I could apply the TWRP 2.5.0.0 update right after it, but it wouldn't take it. I was a little worried that I borked it. It booted and went into the OS and updated a bunch of things. I noticed my SuperSU was no longer root even though it was going to try and survive the update.
Also: I switched to the 4.2 Launcher... not sure I want my tablet to run just like my phone. I might switch back.
I'm still going to try and get to a CM 10.2 rom, it might not be an official rom though.
Rich
Step 4
I decided to see where things were at with a fully tweaked 4.2.1 rom before the 4.3 rom and picked
[ROM]★●[TF300T/G/L/201/301][CROMi-X 5.0.2][ODEX/DEODEX 10.6.1.27.1][SEP 8]●★
This looks very well done/well polished and has lots of people testing it. Will update as I head to 4.3.

Ancient TF101 w/Prime ROM - What Next?

Hello All,
I've had my TF101 Transformer running Roaches Excellent PRIME ROM (latest version 2.1.1) forever. No problems, works great.
That being said, when the KitKat ROM arrives I am thinking about updating to speed up the UI.
I've currently got an unlocked bootloader and root with CWM 3.2.0.1 running fine.
What would I need to do to update this such a huge amount?
It looks like I should have TWRP 2.6.x installed before anything else. Is that true?
Can someone outline the process briefly so I am on the right track?
Also, if KitKat won't really have any effect on overall speed and stability, will another ROM (JB,ICS, etc.) be better?
I rely on this device in the field, so like to have stability over "bells & whistles."
Mostly I use terminal/telnet and basic browser tools. I do like the occasional 1st person shooter.
What's your opinion?
Thanks,
Rich

Hi Rich
Frederuco has a great guide HERE - it does refer to the 4.3 KissKat Rom but will also be applicable to the new KissKat KitKat (KKKK) Rom - and further info is on the KKKK Rom's thread HERE
OK...great info about Katkiss and the upgrade path. Though none of it covers CWM to TWRP upgrade/changes nor the ancient to the new!
How do I SAFELY change from CWM to TWRP with the current ROM then go to something new and stable without causing huge issues?

Firstly use CWM to make a Nandroid backup so you will have a fallback.
Edit - Use TB to backup your apps too !!!
Put the latest TWRP on your sd card and flash it using CWM. Thus your recovery will now be TWRP.
What happens is TWRP replaces CWM and the KKKK Rom replaces your old ROM. By the way you DO need to use TWRP with the KKKK Rom as CWM will present problems.
Cool,
Just finished the CWM backup and the TB app+data to the SDCARD. Leave me about 8gig.
I am a bit concerned that I have seen posts saying that honeycomb is NOT compatible with the latest TWRP....
Is it?

I recently restored my TF to Stock and did a complete reinstall. The first thing I did was to install TWRP and update it to the lateset Version from the development forum, so there should be no Problems. Everything went well for me and I am enjoying KatKiss KitKat now.
If you want to be complete save copy your backups on an microsd.
Hmmmm... I got TWRP installed. Got Katkiss running. Did a Titanium restore of individuals + date. Rebooted, now I am stuck at the Katkiss color sphere logo for two hours...I have around 240 apps...how long SHOULD it take?

That sounds wrong, TB only activates after full boot.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda app-developers app
OK... all good now! It was the android media process. Fixed.
Any idea how I can get the top bar menu/clock/battery etc to mimic the old PRIME by Roach theme. I.e at the bottom right, I don;t like losing any screen real estate at the top at all.
Also, anyplace to download the Asus live tree wallpaper? I liked that one.
Thanks everyone!

If you are using KatKiss 4.4.2 you can not at the moment as timduru has not implemented the TabletUI yet. Not sure if he plans to do so but I sure hope he does.
If you installed KatKiss 4.3.1 there should be a user interface point in your settings and you can select TabletUI as Interface Mode.
Yup, that's what I figured. It was TabletUI related.
I saw that the KatKiss 4.4.2 was at a stable release and figured it would be a better bet.
Works great! Just want the older UI.....Maybe he'll add it in.
Thanks!

Google has dropped the TabletUI in 4.4. There is talk on the developer's thread about Tim looking into restoring it but I doubt that it is a priority.
You know, if I could simply move all the Icons and Status from the top right to the bottom right, I'd be happy.
