Q: Expanded Desktop/Keyboard Issue - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So far, everything about the Nexus 5 is fantastic. One minor issue I am running across is related to the popup keyboard. For starters, I am using the GravityBox Pie Controls (always enabled feature). They are great, but the constant softkeys popping up when using any keyboard makes it quite annoying.
I looked on Xposed Framework and did not see any module that rectifies this minor annoyance.
Does anyone know of a way to disable the softkeys completely when using any android keyboard?

Bump as I have yet to find a solution to this problem.

I use gravitybox for expanded desktop + pie and have never had the softkeys pop up when using the keyboard, on either of my phones. Are you using actual expanded desktop or immersive mode with gravitybox?

Expanded desktop. I believe it is set to hide navigation bars. I'll try playing with the settings.

Are you stock on your Moto X?
I suffer this same annoyance (as the OP) with Immerse Me module. The newest Gravity Box mod was to fix this but it breaks Desktoo Mode. Only "hide nav bar" and sem-immersive" mode work. Semi-immersive acts just like hide nav bar as you can't swipe to restore the nav bar.
I just use immerse me for now and deal with the keyboard and volume bug. Running stock root Moto X Dev VZW.

Yeah, stock rooted. Have you tried the App Settings module? It allows you to set immersive mode on a per app basis. Not sure if it will solve your problem but it's worth a shot.

I will try it.
What version of Xposed and GravityBox are you using?
I am using 2.4.1 (xposed) 2.9.4 (GB)
*update* Just tried App Settings and it still suffers from same keyboard and volume issues.

My X is on 2.2 for Xposed and 2.6.3 for GB. I'm still on Jelly Bean on my Moto X.
My N5 is on 2.4.1 for Xposed and 2.8.6 for GB.
What volume issues are you talking about?

[Q] how to enable full screen immersive mode?

full screen (no status or nav bar) hasn't been happening for me. is there a way to enable it?
I believe it requires an app to request it so you'll have to wait until apps get updated with the functionality.
Ah ok. strange there's so much talk about this feature on sites and from Google yet it's not actually really in use. most of these tech sites write about phones they haven't even used.
Techradar guys have been able to use it in Google Reader app according to their early hands on review. Give it a go and see how it works there before support from other apps arrives.
I think this is a feature that most probably can be applied to all apps in a simple way by a Xposed module (similar like App settings module). Be patient, something like that will come.

That's what they wrote. I just quoted.
I don't get why other Google apps like chrome aren't using full screen yet?

Xposed+gravity box allows you to enable and disable immersive mode anytime you wish

Not right. With Gravitybox, you can enable Expanded Desktop which is of course nice (and used by me), but Immersive Mode is different: In ED you just can toggle it on/off (hide/unhide navbar/statusbar permanently), while in Kitkat's IM I you can, while the bars are hidden, swipe from the screen edge to show them.

Some apps have immersive mode built in, otherwise I believe you can't get it WITHOUT flashing a custom ROM.
Cataclysm ROM works, and has a quick toggle for it if you're wondering. And plenty others.

So IM is impossible at present?

Use Immerse Me
Try this -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2557697
Xposed is required
Anyway full Immersive Mode is suboptimal. One wants to see the statusbar for quick informations. So Gravitybox's solution where you can only hide the navbar is best.

I am new to Xposed so I can not give any indication on the history, but I can confirm that I can get the following options for Expanded desktop mode in the latest version of GravityBox for KitKat:
Disabled
Hide navigation bar
Immersive status bar
Immersive navigation bar
Semi-immersive
Immersive
The settings are in the "Display tweaks" menu. Once activated, you can turn the effect on and off via the power menu (found by holding down the power button on your phone for a second or two). GravityBox's Immersive Mode works the same as KitKat's IM and from what I can tell it works very well indeed. It will hide the nav bar and status bar and give applications that extra screen real estate to use. A swipe from the top of the screen will temporarily show the navbar and status bar.
I am running GravityBox [KK] [2.9.6] on my Nexus 5.
You can enable immersive mode without root using GMD Full Screen Immersive Mode

[Q] Navigation bar has disappeared

I've got my nexus 5 for a couple of months now, and as soon as I've had it I rooted it and installed the xposed framework for modifications. I use gravity box in order to use pie controls and hide my navigation bar but I kinda miss my on-screen buttons but can't seem to find a way to do it.
Extended desktop mode is off.
I've enabled the navigation bar in gravity box for no success, and tried to used the GMD hide soft keys application but that doesn't seem to work as well (either does several other applications)..
Even tried and disabled gravity box but nav bar just won't come back..
Both the Xposed framework and Gravity box are update
.
I am using the american Nexus 5 32gb model with KK 4.4.2.
Would very much appreciate the assistance!
Either disable expanded desktop or toggle immersive mode off
Both are off (wasn't on in the first place)

Well you dont have to enable nav bar. That master switch in your screenshot is actually just for tweaks. So try set Pie to enable = never and leave nav bar tweaks set to off too.

I actually did that right after I saw your post, and reboot, but still nav bar doesn't seem to pop.
I really don't want to do a factory reset and am hoping to avoid it if possible :\

You should uninstall that GMD thing too.
Sure you've not edited SystemUI in any other ways? You're still on Stock ROM?

All apps I've used and didn't work were uninstalled.
I am on stock 4.4.2 ROM and I don't belive i modifies SystemUI in any way knowingly, how can I check if I have?
BTW, I really appreciate the help! Thanks!
You would know if you had.
Go into the Xposed installer app and uninstall the framework (we can reinstall it later - you wont lose any settings) then reboot. This should rule out anything xposed related. If it's still happening its nothing to do with xposed as it doesnt make changes to actual system files.

Nav bar returned!
But now of course I don't have my xposed frameworks and modules
*PROBLEM SOLVED!*
So I got up and reinstalled the xposed module and on and checked each module..
Apparently the 3 dot menu button on every application kept the navigation bar from going up.
Thanks alot rootSU for your help and guidence!

OK so now you know it IS an xposed module. Now you have to work out which one it is by disabling them all then installing the framework. Then enable one at a time (and reboot in between) to work out which one is causing the issue

[Q] Menu bar background in 4.4.4 KitKat issue

Not sure how to best describe this, but take a look at this screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/GMXfeMf.png
Shown is the background on my menu bar, with "less" of an opaque overlay from my main wallpaper. This issue started up today, and I am not sure what is causing it.
I am on 4.4.4 KitKat, with Xposed Framework, and menu tweaks via GravityBox disabled.

Nova. Sorry that I forgot to mention that.
By menu bar, do you mean navigation bar? And less opaque, meaning more transparent?

Took the words out of my mouth. That's exactly what's going on, via my screenshot.
I don't see any navigation bar options in Nova Launcher, so I am unsure how it would be affecting this. Nova has had no recent updates that I can recall, and the issue was not occurring 48 hours ago.
Nova has been updated twice this week. The 2nd one was a bug fix.
Its not down to settings but the launcher needs to support the transparency of the navbar for KitKat. I remember it being added to nova last year. So yeah - try a different launcher first and see if the issue goes away. If it does, contact Kevin.

Thank you for the reply.
I switched back to stock Google GEL launcher, and the issue remains. This is when I am switching over to the Google Now home page, you can even more clearly see the menu buttons with a different transparency: http://i.imgur.com/GsRlAV2.png
Looked into the settings of app Lux, there is an option of Advanced -> Miscellaneous -> Use alternative overlay. Enabling this fixed the issue.
I guess some new feature of Lux is not working well with the menu bar.

Enable On Screen Navbar 23.3.23?

I updated to the soak build 23.3.23 for the Maxx. I enabled On Screen Navbar on previous system, but that mod is not flashing via TWRP because the system doesn't match. Anyone have any idea how to enable On Screen Navbar on the new 23.3.23 build?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Update the bottom of the build.prop with
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
using root explorer in text editor mode, saved changes and reboot. Once rebooted you should have onscreen nav keys, Hope that helps.

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, adding that to the build.prop on the Maxx doesn't do the job. There needs to be modification in the framework-res.apk. I tried to modify it with apktool and install, but it bootlooped me. Like an idiot, I didn't make a backup and there is no fxz out there currently....oops. I was able to flash TopSnake's ROM, so at least my phone is working now. I'll be holding my breath until fxz is released.

you could also just use xposed + gravity box to enable onscreen Nav buttons. Only difference I believe is that GB does not disable the physical nav buttons

How much real estate do you gain if any by on screen nav keys?

You lose real estate, since they pop up on the bottom.
I used a combo of this mod + Gravity Box when I had cracked my screen and it messed up the sensor in the physical nav buttons.

Immersive Mode

Is there a way to effectively hide the navigation bar on the Pixel 3a so that you are in immersive mode? I've tried the Tiles app but I found that it causes issues with the keyboard and I also noticed that it causes active edge to not work consistently.

If you're rooted you could use this. Or if you root and have Magisk, you can install GravityBox and that has it too.

Trying the navigations gestures app from the play store and so far it seems like it's working. I haven't run into any compatibility issues or bugs yet.
I wanted to try avoiding rooting right now.

Update:
not working well across all applications. Microsoft OneNote is an example. when you go into a particular note to add text the keyboard opens and then shuts down right away. This makes it not possible to add to an existing note within the app. I have to turn off the hide navigation bar option temporarily in order to use OneNote. Tried various behavior options within the menu and it didn't help.
