Better reception with MF1 or ML1? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I recently came off of the MB1 radio to the newer MF1 radio.
Has anyone been using the new ML1 and compared results of which radio receives the best reception?
I know it may very by geographic location but am interested in what others find.

Both seem the same to me. The biggest difference I noticed is ML1 drops down to 3G much more often. I almost never saw 3G with MF1 as it would stay in a low 4G instead. I'm guessing they opted to drop down to 3G for a better user experience if it was stronger than a weak 4G.

I really don't see any difference and I am on my phone heavy every day from morning to night. I also don't travel much outside of the normal work, shopping, mall, etc areas by me in NY. Furthermore, 4G is very prevalent in my area. I am rarely on anything less than 4G and even in my home, I have 4-5 bars of 4G at all times. #LoveMyBigRed :good:

Do not use ML1 unless you go to a touchwiz 4.3 rom. If you are staying on 4.1.2 or AOSP stick with MF1. If you go to the touchwiz 4.3 you will need the ML1.

I'm sorry but you really don't know what you are talking about. You could use the ML1 modern on a 4.1.2 ROM if you wanted. That's OK. What you should NOT do is use an older modem on a newer Android Version (e.g. MB1 on 4.4).

Agreed about the similar performance. Except LTE is a more efficient protocol than CDMA is... however if there's a low LTE signal and the phone is smart enough to stop trying to ping the LTE band, that could save some juice. The constant polling and searching, be it data to wifi, drains the battery more than a constant or static location connection.

Speaking from my own experience my ping time on speed test have improved drastically. Call quality is a bit better as well. I still get the same speed test results ranging from 25Mbps down to 72Mbps down. Text are sending and receiving a bit faster as well for me.

ML1, I ota'd so I'm running the whole new sha'bang.

Hi guys
So from what I've read on this thread, it seems that you have an option of either MF1 or ML1. However I think I have both? I'm such a noob at this. Here's a screenshot. And just to confirm, MF1 gives a better reception/call quality?

You have mf1.
The build number is simply the name of the rom, the developer put the base it was built on in the title, which is ml1.
Your baseband says what you're currently running, which is mf1.
Radio choice is subjective, if you're getting poor reception on mf1 try flashing the ml1 radio and see if it improves. It's reported to improve signal specifically on a ml1 base.

+1.
I haven't seen any improved reception with ML1, but each device is different and it's really subjective, so you may find it performs better than MF1 does.

[Q] ICS Radios.. Which is working best for you?

Hey, I've been reading around the forums and it seems there are 3 main radio's to choose from. I plan on testing them all in depth. It seems results vary from phone to phone especially with the UCLC5 Modem (from the Note). I was wondering if other users would post their results I'm curious to how your phones are handling these modems and what your opinion on them are.
UCLA4 (from the original leak)- I started with this one. I felt like my speeds and signal didn't reflect what my bars indicated. It felt like it said I had more than what I had. I don't recall my speeds but I intend to test this radio more in depth tomorrow.
UCLC5 (modem from the Note)-The note radio is what I have been using since it was posted here. While my radio seems to show less bars I tend to get better signal. 2-4 megs down and 1-2 megs up on HSPA+. I have yet to have noticed anything strange with it.
UCLD2 (from the 2nd leak)-I haven't gotten to test this radio yet since I've had connectivity issues all day.
I think these are all the ICS modems. feel free to post any I missed.
essential I'm trying to get a general idea on the modem with the best speed.
Personally I think the new UCLD2 radio is much improved.

Newest leak is working the best for me so far. Signal looks weaker in the notification bar but my connection is much more solid than it used to be.

I agree with shepherd the latest leak works the best.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
the best thing for everyone to do is to try them all yourself. I think everyone's phone reacts the the modems differently. A modem that kicks ass for me may suck ballz for you. Also once I flash a radio I always use it for a day or two before making any judgements as to whether its an improvement or not.
Edit: forgot to mention that my decive picks up wifi signal better as well. Not sure if that's even a modem thing or something else Sammy changed in the latest ics leak but I sure do like it

I flashed the stable version of CM10 last night from stock ICS 4.0.4 and my signal sucks. I tried flashing the new VRLJ1 Radio + RPM and still nothing. I used to get 3-4 bars at home now I barely get 2.
I am looking for a ROM that can fix this problem.
Let me know if you find a fix.
Thanks
You might want to check w/vzw to see if work is being done in your area (towers down, etc). My signal has been solid and improved on eclipse 4/new j1 radio. Was on liquid 7 prior with no issues signal wise. If anything signals are improving.

Great advice to follow, sometimes its not always your radio but rather maintenance, if the problem arose switching to your said ROM, ask in that specific if anyone else has the same problem, or switch between radios and see what works for you. It is known that not all radios are great for everyone, sometimes an old one works better for specific people in different areas

Fwiw- aosp ROMs don't seem to have the signal strength compared to touch wiz ROMs. Until ril and kernel source is released there's going to be this issue. However, after flashing the latest jellybean radio I've had much better data and phone signal reception.

So I should switch to a TW ROM in order for the service to improve?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I to have bad signal. At my house my phone jumps from 4G to 3G. I do not have problems with the phone everything else work flawlessly.
My wife has an old 3G phone (first gen) it works great. My old 3G Driod X gets great signal. The wife got a LG Envy 4G phone a few weeks ago. Always has 4G she even gets 4G on the bottom floors of the hospital. My SIII get no service. I think it is a Samsung thing my self.
Samsung doesn't have the best radios, that's for sure.
That being said TW is definitely the way to go if you're in a fringe area. AOSP just can't do it right yet...which is really annoying...
Why are folks comparing signal bars? Its been said time after time that its meaningless. The only way to compare is go into settings/about device and look up the signal -db. I can gurantee aosp signal is no worse than touchwiz...now in fringe coverage areas i believe touchwiz is still slightly better.

[Q] 4G LTE issues with CleanRom 5.0

Hi all,
i have some questions about CleanRom 5.0 however i don't have the authority to post in it's forum, so i'm hoping someone can help me out here.
overall the rom is incredible, my only issue is the speed of my 4g lte network. it is much slower than what i am used to.
using speed test i consistently get about 12mbps down and 8mbps up, however if i go back to my stock nandroid backup so my phone is like it was before i went to cleanrom i used to consistently get about 23mbps down and 16mbps up. is this normal for cleanrom and if not is there a way to fix it because now the speed is about half of what it used to be.
i should probably also mention that i flashed the new radio and rpm that scrosler provided links to in the second post of the cleanrom forum
I've seen it stated many times that roms won't affect connection. Likely it is the new radio you flashed. You can always try flashing the old radio and rpm. Someone with s little more experience may have more insight.

Gotta agree with this. Roms do not change/impact your signal.
OP, flash another set of modem/rpm or even return to what you used before. Personally, my data speeds were below what I'm used to when using the latest modem/rom. My experience is nothing more than anecdotal and a single trial. I switched back to a prior modem/rpm combo and have enjoyed my normal speeds/LTE access.

hows that 989d telus modem running for you? I am guessing that the reason the other modem software is working is cause the hardware is similar or same between some of these phones right? is there a way to find out what chip sets are on these phones to get an Idea of what other firmware works on some of these phones? the T989UVMC6 seems to help my charge time a little and dose seem a little faster on download speeds but still nervous about causing any long term problems but there is no signs of overheating or running flaky so I guess it should be fine.
thanks
I have done some preliminary testing with the UVMB1 and UVMC6 radios and have some very definitive results. There's a speedtest.net server where I live so there shouldn't be too much variance here. I have done some other testing with the other radio (the t989d) with mixed results. The t989d radio is very inconsistent where I live.
The UVMB1 is the first three results, and the UVMC6 is the next three. Pretty conclusive to me. I will be on the UVMC6 from here on
I'm also using the UVMC6 and it does seem to give me a stronger signal. I should probably run a test and get some "official" results.

been running all day with UVMC6 almost 14 hours and still 64% battery and I used my phone a lot today listening to Pandora radio for almost an hour and 4 or 5 phone calls and played on the web a little. I think I am safe to say it improved battery but I rarely loose much signal in KCMO so I cant say that signal is better but I may have seen more H+ than I normally see. my home has steel siding so I dont see as much H+ when inside but it seems to have been H+ most of the time I checked today.
and again thanks for sharing with the rest of us on this information, it has improved the quality of my phone so many thanks

Question about Radios

I'm on the turge stock 4.2.2 room with the new firmware. While I don't have data drops my signal doesn't seem to be as strong. In settings in my house it's -97 dBm. Is it possible to change back to the existing AT&T radio on this Rom without any data drops?
Did you flash twice so your radio would update as well when you flashed the 2.15 firmware? Can you post your baseband version here?
Sent from my Evita
This is the info. From everything I can tell it updated correctly.
Sent from my HTC One XL using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah that's the updated radio. You can try flashing the older radio to see if it helps with your signal strength.
Sent from my Evita
You can try a different radio. A small number of folks have had weak reception with the newer radio, and report better reception with an older radio.
But you might start getting the signal drop issue, as I believe its related to the power save function on Sense 5 ROMs not being compatible with the older radios.
If you aren't actually experiencing any reception issues (no dropped calls or breakup during calls, good download speeds on the network), and only observing the measured signal strength, I'd lean toward saying to leave the radio alone. Might cause an actual problem versus the present "perceived" problem.
Where would I find the older radio and would i flash it like the firmware? I feel like my download speeds aren't as good and I'm willing to give it a try.

Have you actually measured the speeds using Speedtest, and at different times of the day (networks tend to be more congested at certain times)? You can just be having a placebo effect.
