[Q] is it safe to store backups on the cloud. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Simple questions. T-Mobile only had the 16 GB version. So that's what I got. One back up cost me two gigs. Is it safe to store these on Google drive. If a bootloop happened. I could just push it over from my computer right? Is there a worst case scenario that would need it stored on the device?

I push mine to my NAS for the same reasons. Just means no flashing on the bus to work.
Yeah you can push the backup to your device. You should use twrp or philz recovery though, not traditional cwm as cwm stores the backups in the wrong place.
You can even restore from otg

I use twrp. Gonna free up some space now. Throw all the mods in there too. Why not.

Update From SD Card?

I've tried searching for an answer on this but haven't had any luck. Is it possible to update from the SD card using the stock recovery? Or should I say is it safe to? I don't have a computer that I can install ADB on.
If so, any idea why I don't have that option, it only lists Update From ADB in my recovery (I am not connected to anything via USB).
Thanks, and sorry if it's been answered elsewhere already (if so a link would be awesome).
Edit - Aaaaaannnnnd... I didn't post in the Q&A forum. Mods feel free to move. Sorry.

The stock recovery doesn't seem to have an option for it... I wanted to try it but ended up sideloading it.

Blah, this stinks. I only have a work laptop without admin rights so I can't install the device drivers. Seeing everyone sideloading it is killing me. ?

'My phone number' showing as 00000000000?

Hi,
I bought my 32GB Black N5 unlocked from Google play, and upon installing a sim card, the 'My phone number' option in about phone simply shows eleven zeroes? This is preventing me from using the sim toolkit app, something I quite useful.
Anyone else experiencing this/know how to fix it? I have an unlocked boot loader, TWRP, Franco.kernel r24 and a rooted stock 4.4.2 ROM. I'm on T-Mobile UK. Other phone functions work completely fine.
Thanks,
X10man

I'd be interested to see what people suggest for solutions for this, my mum has this problem on her Xperia SP. Although for her it's not problematic problem as such, just an oddity.
It just reads the number programmed onto the sim. You just need to get the number written to your sim and you're fine. Wide issue, well documented on the internet

That would probably explain it, this sim is a replacement for my original mini sim, as the phone would not accept it cut down.

System partition is almost full?

For some reason, my system partition is close to full. I only change boot animations and right now I'm using the unmodified stock one. Running 4.4.2 stock deodexed and it started getting in the way of my boot animation ports. Any reasons of why the partition is low on space? I already deleted unneeded system apps like the Korean and Hindi keyboard stuff. Any suggestions would be helpful.

What? You've got nearly 400 MB free. There should be no problem here. How big are these boot animations? They must be ridiculous

I'm confused. You have almost 400mb free. How is that low on space? Here's mine, and I'm just stock rooted with no mods:

btw, you can put your bootanimation.zip in /data/local/ instead of system/media/. this way the stay even after a rom flash, AND you have much more spece available there(whatever your space in your storage is).

Sorry guys. This was a mix of dyslexia and a faulty root explorer. Root explorer kept saying i had no space left and i could swear I
thought I saw it saw 300 KB instead of Mb. Sorry guys.

[Q] Can i extract the bootloader

Simply question. How can i extract the bootloader. Either directly from device(using adb) or by extracting the bootloader.img file? Any tools for this windows/linux?
Is there a reason you must get it from the device rather than from a factory image?
Was wondering the same thing...OP, the factory image is here and it has all the images in it:
https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/hammerhead-kot49h-factory-02006b99.tgz
I am aware of the stock image. What I want to do is extract the content of the .img file

Ah ok. Yeah, you'll need to develop a method to do that.
Any pointers?

You're going to have to decompile it. Then I'm not sure what you'll end up with.

Nice if you wanna change the bootsplash.
Although it took alpharev to extract the hboot on the desire if you remember? I don't hold much hope when there's not so much to be gained.
If it controlled mtd layout, that would be of interest to me

That is just what i want to do change the bootsplash. It might be above my ability tho. If i could just decompress the image and see what's inside i would have a better idea of if i can do it or not...but that is what i do not know what tool to use(if any) to decompress the image file...all of it might be over me but i figured i hav not heard anyone talk about it so i might as well start the conversation

Root without Wipe

Is there a way to root my Nexus 5 without wiping the entire device? I've been looking around and all roads lead to unlocking the boot loader with adb, which wipes the device.
I remember on my GS2 & GS3 I could insert root into stock with just a couple of files, no flashing or adb.
Any help is appreciated.

Fastboot, you use fastboot to unlock the bootloader and flash the custom recovery. And no there is no way without unlocking the bootloader. The reason unlocking the bootloader wipes the user data is for security so that someone can't steal the phone and then unlock it in order to steal your data.
