There is conflicting advice available for hot-swapping the sims and it seems every device is different. Has anyone changed sim cards on the O3D running ICS without any side effects. I think the voice and texts will work but unsure if the data (APN) will automatically be updated or will need to be manually configured. I want to swap sims when abroad or when low on prepay credit and then revert to original sim without too much hassle.
Thanks for any advice,

APN data should be changed manually to match your current network if possible.Gl!

Hi. As the title says. I have just bought my dad a g1 from ebay, he has a tmobile payg sim card with no data plan, I have a g1 with a g1 data plan, if he uses my sim card to activate it will he still get the ability to take and make calls?
Thanks joe
As far as I know, he'll need to use data to activate it as he will need to sign on with his GMail account.
g1 without data plan
What do you meen by data, he will use my sim to aactivate and his gmail to sync data, and after that he will swap to his payg tmob sim card, so will he get phone call ability,
Thanks joe
yeah he would be able to activate it with your sim card. But once he puts in his sim card, the data charges may start to come up. I would say before you put in his sim card, delete the apn settings. that should kill any data from working so it is then just a phone. But the wifi can still work. or have his plan upgraded to a flexpay with the g1 service. You dont need a contract with that..
Yup that's gud, so deleat the apn's to stop tmob from charging and just use as normal g1 without 3g or grps or edge, ps how do I deleat apns
I am sure thats how it works. you can get "NetMeter" from the marketplace. that will tell you if there is anything accessing the data plan.
to remove apn go to
menu --> wireless controls --> Mobile Networks --> Access Point Names in there you will want to click on T-Mobile US - T-Mobile US 800 and remove the APN. Assuming you are in the US.
Thanks for quick reply, I'm in uk but I'm sure that will be the same but for tmob uk. Thank allot
If I was you I would post to get some feedback, it is a big post all about the APN settings. they should know more then me about it all.

I'm really getting tired of having to reprogram my data connection settings for my cell phone service. Is there a way put this on the simcard similiar to like putting contacts on it.

It is technically possible, but the phone would have to be programed to read and use the settings written on the SIM card. I doubt very many phone operating systems are set up that way.
I'm just getting tired of having to enter all the info each time I flash a new rom. Getting a lil have about it I guess.
If you have a sim free vanilla ROM the when you put a new sim in it automatically sets up APN, MMS etc. One of the number of advantages
Since I have the slide I guess all the roms, atleast all the ones I tried, aren't vanilla.
Hello,
Apparently I can't store contacts without a sim card in my D2G... Is there another reason that I need a sim??
How can I use the phone without the sim chip? Because my old provider was a GSM but now I'm using CDMA. I figured that I didn't need the chip but then I tried to store a contact... bummer.
So... is there a "dummy" chip I can get or do I even need one? If I absolutely need a chip then how do I get another one?
Thanks!
You don't need a SIM card to store contacts. Default contact storage can be chosen, and from what I gather you're on Froyo firmware as Gingerbread doesn't offer the SIM as a contact storage option.
Make sure you have a Google account configured on the phone. If you do, consider doing a factory reset.
Yup. I'm running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).
So now what??
Thanks btw!
Have you configured a Google account at all?
I have often wondered why we even have sim cards in our phones(I understand gsm needs them yadda yadda yadda). When I unboxed my phone, a long LONG time ago on froyo, I was playing with all the "features" and could never access the sim card. I thought it would be a great feature for backing up contacts etc.
I think I read somewhere though that sims, at least for the bionic, are tied to ONE device ONLY and could not be swapped between phones. Obviously this would defeat th entire purpose of the card. No?
I am on verizon in the USA only (no overseas travel, no need for gsm) with a D2G. I just kinda seemed odd...

That's plainly wrong.
A USIM card, or rather, an UICC (USIM is a sub-species of UICC, just like CDMA's RUIM cards) contains a small CPU that runs the USIM (for GSM) or RUIM (for CDMA) program. That program is responsible for encryption, key generation, and such.
Unlike Verizon CDMA phones, GSM phones, and CDMA devices using RUIM cards do not need to be flashed to a carrier. All identification data is stored on the UICC.
UICC can be bound to a phone, but it can only be done on the carrier's side (binding UICC's ID to the device's ID — IMEI for GSM or MEID for CDMA). A phone can be programmed to only accept UICC cards of a certain carrier (that's what carrier-locked phones are).
Verizon's CDMA/LTE devices like the Bionic have to use USIM cards because LTE is basically 4G GSM, and you need USIM for GSM codecs, encryption, security, etc. Verizon's LTE USIM cards will not work in non-VZW phones (well, maybe they can provide data connectivity for GSM/LTE phones that support VZW's band; and once VZW moves voice and text to LTE… you get the idea).
Vice versa, GSM USIM cards will (probably) not work with VZW LTE phones as they're most probably locked to VZW USIMs.
DROID2 GLOBAL (and DROID3 as well), however, has a GSM/CDMA transceiver which, once unlocked, will accept any GSM USIM card (extremely old plain SIM cards — which you probably won't find anywhere anymore — won't work well since 3G-capable phones require USIM explicitly).
As for contacts backup, it's a bad idea. USIM contacts storage is extremely limited. You can only store something like 16 characters for contact names, and one single phone number for each contact. SIM memory is also limited; usually you can fit up to 250 contacts with 150 being the average limit.
Note that SIM contact storage can be disabled on the SIM card itself. I wouldn't be surprised if VZW's Vodafone NL USIM cards come with on-SIM storage disabled.
I hope this answers most of your questions.
No it doesn't really help...
See, I accidentally threw away/misplaced my SIM chip. Now when I simply even click on contacts it just doesn't work... literally nothing happens.
I do have a Google account configured but if I choose to import contacts or save them to Google it seems that EVERY single email address I've replied to, or written to shows up in the contacts list.
How can I configure Google to simply store ONLY phone numbers and not every single email address/phone number that I've emailed or texted?
Seriously it's sick that when I sync contacts my list is filled with like thousands of addresses and numbers.
Perhaps I'm doing it wrong??
Thanks!
Well, you don't really need to import anything.
Open https://google.com/contacts in any browser you like (f.ex. on your desktop PC) and check My Contacts there. That's what Android syncs.
Good day.
I currently have the Galaxy S6 dual sim version bought from a local network. It seems that although the second sim (whether in slot 1 or slot 2) can be used for SMS and calls, it CANNOT be used for mobile data.
I've tried flashing a supposedly OPEN LINE stock firmware (XTC brand, version 5.0.2) to try and open up both slots for mobile data, but although the phone firmware definitely updated, the second sim still is locked out from being used for mobile data. APN settings are locked for the second sim, again whether it was in slot 1 or slot 2.
Will flashing a different firmware (NOT FROM our country) work in unlocking the mobile data access? Will I have issues if the CSC comes from another country while I use this phone here at home?
Thanks!
Help with build.prop settings
So I've tried rooting and going around the build.prop file. I've tried to install a couple of lines that seemed to open up the APN settings of other network-locked phones:
ril.sales_code=LOL
ro.csc.sales_code=LOL
However, I'm only still able to add or modify APN settings for the sim of the network but not for a sim for another network. Maybe there's a modification to the build.prop file that can be done to finally open up APN settings for both sims?
UP
Still hoping someone can help me with this, either with a firmware for the dual sim version that can unlock the data/APN settings for any sim in both slots or possibly some build.prop tweak settings that can do the same.
SOLVED
Was able to find a tech guy who downloaded a program that "debranded/unbranded" the unit, making it a plain vanilla S6 Duos. Now any sim can work with data in any slot, APN settings activated.
link to the program please
Hello, I'm having the same problem, could you advise what was done to make your apn setting enabled?
Yes, link to the program will be very useful to all of us.

Hello
I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy SIII (I535) with the Android 4.4.2 and the VRUDNE1 Build (I535OYUDNE1 Baseband). I got the Data and voice Roaming Package when I went to Europe. The voice part worked fine but the Data roaming sucked big time. Since you only get 100 MB (at 3G only), you follow their advise to reduce mobile data. Well I could not get reliable Internet access, even if I put the phone back up to full mobile data. I was using it with Maps, Yelp and TripAdvisor .
I then decided to buy an Internet-only SIM card in Germany, I could now get Internet access but I got the stupid message about the SIM card not being valid and the APN data had to be manually entered even when putting back the Verizon SIM card, which was a pain.
Now the phone is out of contract and not used with Verizon. I want to make it as my travel phone and be able to automatically load APN data and get rid of the SIM card message.
I see a couple of websites that claim that there are new easier methods to root the phone using towelroot.
Does anyone knows if towelroot will work with my current SIII?

Towelroot will work with an i535 on NE1, I bought a used, unrooted device a month ago and successfully rooted it. But, rooting will not automatically change APNs when you swap sims, I don't think.

No, but they I can use Apps that have the APN data but require root access. The other thing that would be nice is getting the RESET APN activated but not critical.
I had the impression that some of the SIM cards had a utility (or done through the activation) to set the APN data automatically. Need to test it thought

I've never changed SIMs, so I don't know if they have such a utility. I recall some of the the US pre-paid carriers supplying their APN settings packaged with the card for users to set. (StraightTalk comes to mind.) Since haven't needed to change APNs I don't know about the Apps you mentioned either.
Looks like I should have confirmed Towelroot working and not added any additional comment, you seem to have the rest worked out. BTW, let me know if you don't have a working copy of TowelRoot.
