Hi everyone,
We've created a game modding driver that we call MantaMod, which works directly at the OpenGL ES stream by intercepting it before passing on to the actual vendor driver, allowing for run-time dynamic insertion of textures into games.
Since it works at the driver layer, modding of games such as AngryBirds, CandyCrush, etc, can be done without needing to change the original game package at all.
We're a small team so haven't had a chance to test this on many devices. So if anyone out there will like to download, give it a try, and let us know if you run into any issues / what else can be improved, that'll be much appreciated!

Create virtual hardware for Android Emulator

Hi there, this is my first post on xda so forgive me if this is put in the wrong forum.
I am new to android and wish to play around with the emulator.
What I want to do is to create my own piece of virtual hardware that can collect OpenGL commands and produce OpenGL graphics.
I have been told that in order to do this I will need to write a linux kernal driver to enable communication with the hardware. Additionally, I will need to write an Android user space library to call the kernal driver.
To start with I plan on making a very simple piece of hardware that only does, say 1 or 2, commands.
Has anyone here done something like this? If so, do you have any tips or possible links to extra information?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Yes, you can do this. There are several ways to do so, but I will explain 2 good options for you.
One: Use AndroidSDK. It's configured for android and simple to set up.
Two: Use virtualbox. If you have the android ISO, you can install it as a bootable image in this software. This gives more functionality than AndroidSDK, but it is not as simplistic. OpenGL live wallpaper problem

This should be in development forum, but I cannot start thread there. Moderators, please move if possible.
I've made OpenGL live wallpaper (really port of my windows program developed long ago). It works fine (but extremely slowly, I guess due to lack of real hardware acceleration) in emulator and in my own device (garmin-asus A10) but I have a lot of feedback that there have problems on other devices. The problems reported really mean that textures are not drawn (primitives drawn without texturing). Everything work except textures (and they are the most important part).
I have no possibility to debug on another device by myself. So I call other developers for help.

Desktop apps ported to Windows RT

The purpose of this thread is to provide a list of desktop apps which have been recompiled to run on hacked Windows RT devices. A secondary purpose is to request or discuss such ports. Listing apps which run without recompilation (.NET 4.x) and providing libraries which are ported and/or known to work are also good uses of the thread. However, major apps, or those expected to lead to significant discussion, should probably get their own thread. Please help keep this one organized.
Please post links to compiled apps for Windows RT desktop, and if possible also link to their source code. I will make minimal testing of the apps before listing them, but nothing extensive; apps may have known or unknown issues, and it's even possible that somebody will link malicious apps here. Use at your own risk.
DO NOT request ports of closed-source applications! It's not possible (unless they're pure .NET 4.x, in which case they don't need to be ported) and you will look like a fool and waste your time. Additionally, at this time, code which requires GCC to build (i.e. can't build under MSVC) is impractical to port.

Thanks all. I'm looking at compiling UniKey (although it will be an old version, as the development 4.x branch is not yet open sourced). I'll also look into ipmsg. Appreciate the links.
EDIT: Ugh. The GPL for UniKey is a lie (ironic, since the author *****es about people violating the GPL with his code... yet doesn't comply with it himself). It relies on a library which is only distributed in binary form, RtfIO. I can probably build the 3.1 version (which is from 2006, and should be pre-RtfIO) since, aside from the occasional piece of truly awful code practices (lots of implicit types and improper use of variable scoping) that may have been permitted by older compilers but don't work in VS 2012, there's nothing difficult about building the app. I could even build 3.6 if the author would release an ARM version of RtfIO... I couldn't legally distribute it under the GPL at that point, but I could build it.
Unless you want me to give 3.1 a shot, you're going to have to ask the author for either the source to RtfIO or an ARM-compiled .LIB file of it.

Transmission, unfortunately, is one of those many open source apps which technically compile on Windows, but only within a GNU-like environment, and in particular it expects to use GCC. While it may be possible to use MinGW to cross-compile for Windows on ARM, that's not the native behavior and will take more investigation.
EDIT: Hadouken, at hdkn.net, appears to be a pure .NET app. It's distributed as a .MSI which doesn't work on ARM< but it may be possible to build it for .NET 4.5 architecture-independent, in which case it should run on Windows RT. It's a BitTorrent client the runs as a Windows service rather than a normal desktop apps, and uses a web interface to control it. Should work fine, though...

http://sourceforge.net/projects/wintransmission/ seems to be a c# port of transmission. less dev than the QT version, but more suitable for us.
I will be taking a look at the effort involved in getting a dev environment working (either monodev or sharpdevelop)
@windowsrtc: I got IPMsg working, it's fine send and receive. I had to remove some platform-specific debug code (I could have written the ARM portion, but was feeling lazy) but it shouldn't matter except that crash logs won't be generated.
Binaries, including installer, are in the smaller ZIP file. Modified source code used to build them is in the _SRC archive.
Also, any pure .net 4.5 app will work on the RT too.
I've gotten Mouse without Borders, a MS-made synergy alternative running great on the Surface.

VLC - do you think Surface RT has all the OS components required for VLC? I would like mkv support on Surface RT and VLC would be a good step in that direction.

@programabd: I think VLC uses some assembly in its decoders, which will make porting difficult. I know there are ARM build already, do it's possible, but there are lots of thing which build on Windows, and build for ARM, but don't build for WIndows on ARM.
@apatcas: Already looked into it. Getting Java support would give a huge number of apps ready-to-go, and however distasteful I find the language or however bad the browser plugin security is, it would be good to have. Unfortunately, the only ARM-ready versions of Java currently available are for Linux, not Windows. It's possible to port, of course, but it'll be a lot of work.

Haven't they started making their own port through the kickstarter campaign, they're making a windows 8 metro style app first then stating on an Rt version, probably not see it this side of Christmas though

Thanks - I wish they would just bypass the handcuffed Metro environment, and just go for a full port to desktop ARM, but that's pretty unlikely

EDIT: Ugh. The GPL for UniKey is a lie (ironic, since the author *****es about people violating the GPL with his code... yet doesn't comply with it himself). It relies on a library which is only distributed in binary form, RtfIO. I can probably build the 3.1 version (which is from 2006, and should be pre-RtfIO) since, aside from the occasional piece of truly awful code practices (lots of implicit types and improper use of variable scoping) that may have been permitted by older compilers but don't work in VS 2012, there's nothing difficult about building the app. I could even build 3.6 if the author would release an ARM version of RtfIO... I couldn't legally distribute it under the GPL at that point, but I could build it.
Unless you want me to give 3.1 a shot, you're going to have to ask the author for either the source to RtfIO or an ARM-compiled .LIB file of it.

he leaves no contact information so I think there is no way to ask him for anything. In that case, if only you could help us building the 3.6 version which could be better with the open source on his website, I think 3.1 is enough for use. We, vietnamese, really appreciate your effort. Thank you.

Binaries, including installer, are in the smaller ZIP file. Modified source code used to build them is in the _SRC archive.

I started working with these but like with other projects... i'm short on time these days. The last of my efforts had a working kernel for these, only a keymap was needed to give to the zgrom developer to build a rootfs, and for someone to text and debug.
IMO the better way would be focusing on developing Android distro, because probably most people are still waiting for working Android on our beloving UNI! Anyway, your efforts are great and mainly because of you UNI developing is still alive!!! Good luck!!

I’m working on shrinking android now; deleting unneeded library’s and functions to lower memory/processor requirements and running processes. This OS is better suited for people who don’t use their universal as a phone and only have 64mb of ram. I don’t have time to work on this either, the question “Who wants to port ZGrom?” wasn’t rhetorical; I really want someone to pick up where I left off porting it. And android for universals is mostly done all hardware except the cams work. Power saving, gprs, sound on both ends of the call all work… I just need to trim and speed it up….and learn some arm assembly to add in iwmmxt optimizations.
I understand that 64 MB of RAM is too little to run any recent Android version (and by recent I mean higher than 2.2), so it'd be good if there was some alternative OS to bring life to old Universals with the standard RAM - even if that new 'life' doesn't including phone abilities. I don't think the PXA 27x CPUs aren't really that optimized to run Android either (Android can be slow on ARMv6, let alone ARMv5). I'm not telling you to give up on the Android thing; just trying to make people realize notime can't focus forever on something that can't be further optimized... but if it can, then just go ahead
In that sense, I support any development efforts towards something that's not Android.
Also, the work done in porting recent Linux kernel versions can be used not only in Android but in any other Linux-powered OS porting. I may have a go at it... once I format my computer with a bigger ext4 partition (currently out of space to install any kind of cross-compiling tools or SDK) - and this can get delayed for several months.
I was playing around with my Universal (with a dead battery), running old Linux distros on it (with things like Qtopia and Opie), when I started thinking if there wasn't a more recent thing to run other than Android. Then I remembered I had promised to try to port this thing once I got my computer formatted...
Actually I have already formatted my computer and now I have a mostly free >250 GB ext4 partition. I'll only be able to start working on this in the beginning of July, however.
This seems like the perfect use for a Uni that doesn't survive when it isn't charging.

CuBox-i. The little computer that can.

Hi,
I hope that this is the right forum in xda to discuss this; but I'd like to introduce CuBox-i; a tiny 2"x2"x2" scalable mini computer that has up to quad ARM processor; quad GPU shader, up to 2GByte memory that is based on Freescale i.MX6 SoC.
The machine is powerful in it's specifications and already has a community around it that fully supports it from software point of view (kernel 3.10 LTS, also upstream work in parallel, lots of distributions etc...)
The biggest advantage of this machine vs. others is it's 64bit DDR memory interface that provides a thick pipe that the GPU, processors and video engine can utilize without hitting walls on 1080p resolutions. Within the interesting features is 1080p HDMI with CEC, power USB hosts, infra red receiver and transmitter, Gigabit Ethernet etc...
We already provided Android 4.3 images and now working on Android 4.4. Look for github rabeeh/android-imx6-kitkat (I can't send the link since this is my first post on xda).
There have been numerous Linux ports already done, including XBMC support; mainly by the community around CuBox-i -
(Again, can't send link; just google "CuBox-i wiki" or "CuBox-i forums" and you will find it).
What we are trying to achieve now is perfecting Android on CuBox-i; with that we are looking for developers that are willing to provide from their spare time to contribute to this project. We have issues already posted on the github issues tracking system.
Needless to say that we will be providing the hardware for the developers for free

Did you use perhaps the cubox i pro 4?
I am really searching other guys who try to bring the android-os forward.
First I use OpenELEC/kodi - Helix, but I want more from that great hardware, so decide to install android (android-4.4.2-1.0.1b-ga-aaf118bb78-gapps.img.xz). Works good but not perfect.
-There is no IR-Sensor Support or CEC to controll the interface with e.g. Samsung-TV remote
-Another launcher (I mean the gui) should be neccesary. I like this here:
-I think this is the android rom- ->This is not for the cubox!
-Here some more Android-FW's- ->They are not for the cubox!
-I think the hardware is not 100% supported. Antuntu gives worse scores and some app crashes again and again or some video stock while playing.
-My Teufel Decoder-Station don't recognice dolby or dts.

I am using the beautiful product that Rabeeh c.s. made: the cubox has a nice spot in my network. It is my NAS and my media-server among other things. And it's all based on Android (in my case 4.3). I am impressed by the things that developers can do in this Linux-environment. There seems to be a solution for every wish or problem. Thanks to you all. I am hoping you can also find a solution for the problem I posted on the cubox-community: "The one thing that is missing on my amazing cubox-i-installation is the possibilty to remotely control the android "desktop" on my cubox-i from my tablet or phone. There are several sollutions for it, but all my attempts fail on the same error: the apps all give the message that there is no internet-connection. I don't understand what is happening here. Obviously I do have an internet-connection to my cubox-i. I use it to download the apps. The only explanation I can think of, is that the android-app expects a Wifi-internetconnection and unfortunately, my cubox-i only has an ethernet-connection. Can anyone tell me what to do to let the app find my internet-connection? For example: which modifications should i make on the driver of the ethernet-adapter? The apps I tried to install, all look promising: Teamviewer, Bomgar, google remote desktop. They all will install without any problem, but they refuse the final step of getting an ID for remote access because of connection-problems."
