This morning my device was asking if it could do a firmware (?) update. I confirmed and of that moment it keeps on rebooting and trying to install an update. Whatever I try I can't get through the loop of updating/rebooting. I thought that maybe via the bootloader (which is working) I can install a new ROM or restore the stock firmware, but nothing is helping. When in the bootloader, the PC can find the device although it is connected (USB connected)

rebooting...
...and it starts all over again...it boots normally but after 10 sec it reboots again...
Has somebody any idea what the problem is and how it can be solved. As it is, I can't do anything with this mobile.
Thanks for your help!
Your post says 'PC can find the device' but I assume you mean 'PC cant find the device'.
So you have a custom recovery, are you also rooted? A custom recovery means an OTA update wont work. You need the stock recovery. I assume the custom recovery has caused the update to fail in such a way that it just keeps rebooting.
Can you manage to get into CWM via the bootloader (ie choose recovery from bootloader options using volume buttons), if so then wipe cache as this will remove the update file and you should be OK then.
If not then I think you need to get the phone seen by the PC when in the bootloader as otherwise you are stuck. I assume at some point it was seen by the PC for you to install CWM?
If running Windows do you still have the drivers installed (I run linux so Im unsure what you would need). I assume a 'fastboot devices' shows no device at all from what you say?
If you can get fastboot working you can then flash back the stock recovery and this may then allow the update to get past the point its failing at, it may still fail but then you can take it from there.
But first try getting to CWM via bootloader and wiping cache and then reboot.

Thank you for your quick reply.
Correct. I mean the PC can't find the device. However via Motorola Device Manager it can.
Yes the phone is rooted
I can't get into the CWM. If I choose recovery from the bootloader, it reboots normally...and the loop starts again...
will try the fastboot.
How are you trying to choose the recovery option from the bootloader?
You MUST select recovery option using the VOLUME UP button (volume down to move between options and volume UP to pick an option).
Do NOT use the power button.

This is very good advice, regarding selecting recovery from Bootloader....
it happened to me, for days I was puzzled, even after flashing stock recovery, 4.3 Recovery, I could not enter Recovery, until I actually read what was written in the BL screen.
Use Vol down to scroll to option, then use Vol up to select that option......(Recovery)
As you say, important not to use power button.....as would come naturally, and its what we use in Recovery......
but not in Bootloader!!!!!!
I panicked so much, but just be calm!!!

If you are rooted it will still fail to update. You are best off just clearing cache via recovery. Or delete zip file (if you get booted up) from /cache using a root file explorer.

motofastboot is a modified fastboot that allows larger images to be flashed. Normal fastboot will work fine for recovery AFAIK.

It's just that mfastboot is recommended by most devs, including Paul O'Brien and flibblesan, on Modaco, and loads of ppl here on XDA, for flashing FW to Motorola devices from BL, so I'd go with it, as it is widely available on either Modaco or XDA.
I don't think an OTA will fail due to root, just if you have modified or removed any system files, or are using a custom recovery.
I think you have to re-root after OTA is applied.
Rooting at 4.4 is easy with Chainfire's SuperSU CWM flasable zip, as explained by flibblesan here:

superSU updates /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
This file is checked for a hash by the script (updater-script) that installs the update. As the file is different then the script bombs out with an error.
I know this because I am rooted and I by mistake attempted to install the OTA when I got the OTA notification. It failed.
There is a line in the updater-script like this:
apply_patch_check("/system/etc/install-recovery.sh", "b54528cf9ebba39534b768ad9108a4732e1eff4a", "99ffe4a3d0e6612e87cd3f6a62dad642094f0169") || abort("\"/system/etc/install-recovery.sh\" has unexpected contents.");
This is basically checking that file and seeing if it has the expected hash (one/both of those long numbers are the hash).
Interestingly the ORIGINAL install-recovery.sh file has these comments at the start of the file:
# File Name: install-recovery.sh
#
# General Description: This script is used to install software update for
# recovery mode after OTA update. This is modified
# from original Google code to split the code into
# a fixed program while putting the dynamic data
# into a config file.
After superSU is flashed it says stuff about superSU in it and the file is completely different hence why if you are rooted (at least if using superSU) then the update fails. Whether there are also other /system files also updated by rooting I dont know.
I dont know why superSU modifies the file, the file once modified kicks off a daemon called daemonsu. Why it has to be this file to start that deamon I dont know - but obviously there must be some reason its rooted in this way.

Thanks for that info......a bit complicated, but I get the gist of why OTA will fail, if rooted using the SuperSU Recovery zip.
I suppose, as you will be un-rooted in any case, unrooting prior to OTA is advisable, I can see that....
when I rooted originally, I used Superboot, as per Paul's Option 1
However, as per the OP, and my attempted OTA, with CWM Recovery intact, and the bootloop problem, etc, etc...and my panic, and not reading what is written in BL....
I never got to flash the OTA, and I just went ahead and learned how to use fastboot, and downloaded the American ROM, flashed it, and CWM Recovery, which works with 4.4 now, and flashed the root zip, as above, and some other zip to give back the H+ for HSPA+ logo, and now I'm happy.....
I'll never have another OTA to deal with now......
When stuff goes wrong we all learn a lot more than if it always went to plan, so its good we have learnt some new things today.
When 4.4.3 is out it'll all be easy now
Everything is working again! With AdbWinUsbApi.dll I could find my device and flash it. And with the help of this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219 I was able to restore the firmware as it was...nearly...I had a Dutch (EU) version, now it's US...no big deal.

Man....you did what I did, and ended up with US 4.4.....
I had UK Tesco 4.3, with an OTA sitting in \cache, but tried to flash with CWM Recovery, messed up, panicked, but things are good now, latest CWM, rooted with SuperSU.
There is also a CWM zip to restore your H indicator for HSPA mobile speed, as US ROM only has 3G for this, and it also modifies the cell signal bars back to normal Android width.....
SystemUI_AOSP_Statusbar-signed.zip
Thanks to tilaz and flibbelsan on Modaco
Good luck from here on,

I had the same situation just now. Accidentally confirmed the OTA update prompt, then the phone goes bootloop. After fiddling here and there, turns out the solution was simple. Reboot to bootloader, connect usb to PC, then wipe the cache using fastboot (fastboot erase cache). It will remove the OTA update zip file and stops the bootloop. Now I need to disable OTA update prompt.
just got the same problem!
solution that worked with me: booted in recovery, connected to pc, [left shift]+[right klick] on folder that contains mfastboot.exe, open prompt, type "mfastboot erase cache". done!
system update is now stopped

Hi
I hope someone can help me, I have updated my phone with a copy of the "wanhusteelblueoptimised" rom but never noticed that there was no boot image in the file I downloaded, after I did the update my phone will not boot past the motorola logo, I can not connect via ADB or rsdlite and I don't have a recovery image for the stock recovery "update.zip" I found one but it failed the signature check. I know of no way to get into open recovery mode from my situation so I can apply another custom ROM. Does anyone have a stock "update.zip file" or know of some fix?
Thanks
You should be able to get in to Open Recovery by holding in the volume up while powering on your device. If that doesn't work you can get the Open Recovery files at ModMyMobile. Un-rar the pile on your pc & copy the openrecovery folder & update.zip over what should already be on your sdcard. You don't necessarily need the boot.img & I would try to just wipe data / factory reset & rebboot first.
hi 3rdstring
Thanks for your reply.
I have never booted into open recovery and am not sure how, I have already tried copying the open recovery files and update.zip onto my sdcard but when I try to install the update from the stock recovery it gives me an error as below
Also I feel sure I should be able to get into the phone with ADB even when in recovery mode, can you confirm this? I am not sure if I also have a problem with my data cable.

I've always had the Can't open /cache/recovery/command in Motorola's recovery & Moto's recovery will only flash an official Moto update (which apparently will never happen for this phone). The update.zip from OpenRecovery runs when you boot in Open Recovery (by holding in the volume up while turning on the phone). This is the recovery you have to use to flash any of the custom ROMs.
Hi Mioze7Ae and 3rdstring
I used the open recovery but from the normal running condition not from a position where it would not boot. Never tried to boot directly into open recovery. had my phone for 5 months and still learning.
I found another post detailing how to boot into boot loader mode and still could not connect to the phone, my drivers had been screwed up so after re-installing them I was able to flash the SBF file, all is fixed now thanks for your response I may not have found out about booting into boot loader mode without your input about booting direct into open recovery, I still need to get that right as I only ever got into stock recovery.
thanks and Regards
Ok, I cant install any update.zip files or NAND stuff to go back to stock. Everytime I try, it says E: signature failure and aborted. Ive wiped all my data and everything too.
Here is the screen info.
Android System Recovery <3e>
reboot system now
apply update from /sdcard << cant install anything using this.
wipe data/factory
wipe cache partition
So everytime I try to install something it says E: signature verification failed.
I run a WIND Nexus S, with a the ICS 4.0.3, which really ate up my memory and started lagging like turtle after an hour or 2. SO I wanna go back to stock and install another version that hopefully rus better and smoother. Please help
Do you have cwm 5.0.2.x or greater?
No, I think Im 3.xx something. BUt Ive tried updating thru rom manager and it says I dont have the privileges. I have superuser installed o I dont know why its not letting me. Do I have to manually apply the 5.8.0 touch update???
I assume you have an unlocked bootloader, so use fastboot to upgrade to v5 or greater. You don't need the touch if you don't want it, you can just use 5.0.2.0 if you prefer.
Recap of command: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You can get the latest superuser .zip file from here. You can probably flash that through the older recovery if you're unsure how to use fastboot.
Thanks for the replies Harbb. SO I did fastboot flash recover to the new 5.0.2.0.. but nothing happened. The cmd did say recovery sent in 1.7 secs. But when I reboot nothing changed. Its still the same recovery at 3e and I still cant install updates cuz of the e: signature verification failure.
EDIT: I just got it to work. Thank for the help Harbb, extremely appreciated.
Good to know you got it sorted
I can boot with volume up and get to the recovery screen. I am combing threads and doing all I can now. Any help is greatly appreciated. Downloading the SDK on slow work internet now and attempting to get all files I think I might need as we speak.
give members more details [what did u flash etc], so they can help u.
No, if you have recovery mode available nothing is lost.
Just download a ROM you like, and try flashing it. If it doesn't work, try formatting and then flashing again.
I flashed one click stock and I saw that SYSTEM failed while it was running. Now I get no boot but I can get to the stock recovery.
How do I get a rom onto the phone in its current state?
when I boot with the vol up / power combination I get a small menu for reboot bootloader, reboot, recovery or power off. If I select recovery I get the triangle icon with the ! and then after a minute or so I can get to what looks like a very small clockwork menu with: reboot system now, apply update from /sdcard, wipe data/factory reset or wipe cache partition. I have tried to apply a rom I had on in the list but it failed verification and the list is only partital it does not let me go all the way down.
In recovery you can still use adb to transfer files to the device.
Code:
adb push update.zip /sdcard
I am having trouble getting adb to work. I am following these instructions but something seems to be wonky?
http://androidadvices.com/how-to-install-set-up-and-use-adb-for-android-devices/#.UAWbt7Sm_Nk
can you point me in a better direction to get adb access
I just noticed at the bottom of my screen in slightly greyed out copy it reads: FASTBOOT STATUS - FAILINVALID COMMAND

That small menu as you called it is fastboot.
That recovery is stock recovery.
Connect to phone to computer and use fastboot to flash a custom recovery. Boot into said recovery. Mount usb storage. Transfer rom over to phone. factory reset/format system and flash new rom.
If you don't know how set up and use fastboot. Look it up.
I got the bootloader unlocked and TWRP installed but whenever I try to flash a rom I get the error message " E:error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (status 7)
Any thoughts?

Do a full wipe, re-download the rom ( make sure its the correct rom for your device) and try again.
If it still fails. Flash the official stock images and make sure that at least works
I am fully wiped but I am going through the process again just to be sure, all I have on the device right now is TWRP its unlocked and boots into TWRP recovery fine. But everytime I flash, I have tried 3 roms and one was the NS4G_IMM76d_deodexed it hits me with the same error as before: e:error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (status 7)
I am searching frantically for a fix, any help is appreciated.

Install 7-Zip
Extract sojus-imm76d from sojus-imm76d-factory-10660f4c.tgz (You will need to go in multiple levels deep to get to folder) to your desktop.
Extract contents of sojus-imm76d-factory_windows-scripts.zip to the sojus-imm76d on your the desktop.
With phone in bootloader mode run flash-all.cmd in the sojus-imm76d folder.
If all worked it should be boot and be working.
That should restore yours to default firmware all using fastboot. Hope this helps.
This site (http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-root/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-on-ics-or-gingerbread/) got me up and running with TWRP then I been having issues flashing roms, I am able to get a Peter Alfonso stock rom to boot but then if I try to flash I get the same error. I was able to ODIN the stock 4.0.4 but nothing seems willing to flash via clockwork or TWRP.
Ok just to bring some closure to this, thanks for all the help. My problem with the status 7 error was that I was using the wrong clockwork recovery. It was bundled in a one click root for Nexus Galaxy and Nexus S, the Root worked great but the recovery was the incorrect version. In any event I am now 100% functional. Thanks to all that helped out.

That is the problem with One click root/unroot. I know the simplicity is awesome but the end user is learning nothing. Doing it the ol' fashion way teaches the user how to use SDK, ADB, and other important simple things. I always say use the guide and do it yourself. Problems happen and instead of having to start a new thread you can trouble shoot it yourself. :good:
Hi gang,
I am back again. I sent my last phone it and got a next day warranty replacement.
Now the new phone after rooting successfully, for some reason I started getting 504 error. So I decided I would reload my backup which I made.
The backup loaded the first time but I still had the 504 errors when trying to install anything from Google Play Store
Now I am trying to load the back up again and my phone hangs on the Black Alcatel boot screen. (Not sure how long I should wait for this)
I went through all the steps again to root the phone.
The bootloader is unlocked
TWRP is booting fine (twrp-2.8.7.0-idol3-6045.img)
SuperSU was installed from TWRP (UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip)
Everything is working on the TWRP side.
But I am not able to boot back into system......
I am hoping there is a quick fix that I am just not seeing.

A 504 error is a network error and has nothing to do with your phone or it's backup. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/504error.htm You should research these error's or post a question before doing things that end up making the situation worse. At this point you need to restore your backup and don't do anything till you read the tutorials on how to install TWRP (which has it's own built in way to root the device) or read a supersu tutorial on how to root the device after twrp is up and running correctly THEN if you have issues ask your question in the proper thread...you say you are "booting" twrp...booting twrp means it's not installed and you are running the fastboot boot command. If you meant "booting INTO twrp" by using the vol up key while the phone is booting then you should clarify. You should also be verifying your supersu zip file has the proper size/md5sum. If your backup is not valid (or you didn't bother to make one) then go to the stock image thread and download the most recent image for your model and flash that via twrp.
Is there a way to flash this from the stock recovery?
I am able to select
"apply update from ADB"
"apply update from scard"
"apply update from phone storage"
When I use "adb sideload 6045i_5.0.2-7SR4-UE40.rar" it starts loading however does not complete.
I get the following messages

No. They require you to go into twrp which is why they say they are TWRP images and is what you should have had flashed/installed before you rooted and bricked a 2nd device. You can try to see while it's in the boot loop if "adb reboot bootloader" gets you to the black Alcatel screen...if it does you can use fastboot to install twrp. (see the instructions in the twrp thread) Otherwise, you once again have a warranty repair. Rooting without actually installing twrp is silly..you lose the backup it gives via restoring a backup, rebooting to bootloader, using the full adb access, or using the built in file manager with root access to restore your device in the event of a bad flash, boot loop etc. It's been commented on repeatedly in the forum that the 6045i and 6045Y do not have a reboot to bootloader in their factory recovery which makes it very easy to "brick" your device until alcatel releases downloadable rom images installable via "download mode".
Thanks for the reply. And whatever it takes to excuse my stupidity lol. It has followed me all my life. I suffer from the one step too many syndrome!
I did install TWRP before rooting. I did everything right. Not exactly sure when things started to go sideways this time.
But I do know for sure that I was still sitting with a bootable TWRP recovery working.
..... Then the one step too many syndrome set in. I thought it would be smart to install the stock recovery image onto the boot partition. That actually "worked"
I was able to boot into stock recovery (as boot) and/or TWRP recovery. So I thought well why don't I just install the stock boot onto the boot partition and flash the stock recovery onto the recovery partition.
Oh well...... No longer able to boot into system. But I can boot into stock recovery. Which of course doesn't help alot, as you have stated about not having a stock rom to install with the stock recovery yet. And I
also believe that since I did not uninstall SuperSu or Unroot my phone, that is why I can not do a successful wipe and reset with the stock recovery. lol
Anyway, the good news is that I have in fact ordered another warranty replacement! What a great warranty I have.
And the better news is that I will have it Tuesday, so please let me know what you need before I turn it on.!
I am not going to root this phone until everything gets stable. So if I can be of any assistance in perhaps helping you figure out a stock rom, please let me know.
I won't turn it on until I get your reply.
Cheers!

While your thought is appreciated we currently have all the versions of stock that we need for the 6045i. The next time start by flashing twrp (not just booting it) following the tutorial in the twrp thread step by step...after twrp is installed boot into it and make a full backup for your OWN use before trying to root. I can't emphasize this enough...follow the tutorials..don't just jump out and start running whatevr. Your system was fine when you had the 504 network error...it was also STILL fine when you restored your backup and "continued to get the 504 error". It was after that you went off on a tangent somewhere. If you cause Alcatel enough grief they can check your returns for the presence of modifications such as attempting to root and opt to void your warranty especially after multiple returns.
[Solved] Idol 3 5.5 6045O MM update failing with "has unexpected contents" hyp error
I previously used Panasonic Eluga Switch ,installed AlekOS 2.5, reloaded a backup of my boot and system image partitions made before i installed AlekOS 2.5, became unable to access fastboot controls after that, updated using mobile upgrade q 5.0.0 back to 5.0.2, got the OTA update and received the error listed below.
The error I get is:
"EMMC:/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/hyp:73728:e57103f3c7eae1b83159aac575f3855d2f4c534b:73728:66fe261ae2b46ed4a9ad2df6f6e6ab2d96701e49" has unexpected contents.

Installation aborted.
E:unknown volume for path [/cache/recovery/block.map]
E:erasing upade package failed errno =2
E:unknown volume for path [/cache/recovery/block.map]
I have tried factory resetting, mobile upgrade q 5.0.0 , wiping the cache after factory resetting and after mobile upgrade q , but I still get the error.
When I wipe my entire system, the update.zip looks for something that is within system, does not find it, and fails.
Solution Edit: Seems the problem may have been with the version of the Mobile Upgrade Q I was using. The one for the idol 3 listed on Acatel's site (version 5.0.0 ) was not the latest Mobile Upgrade Q version! Even though the latest Mobile Q version was within a different phone's area (version 5.0.9) it has the options for all the other phones just like version 5.0.0. So I Used the newest version and and side loaded my update using the stock recovery adb. I think you should be able to just update normally without having to side-load ,however, after using the updated mobile upgrade q.

You can try Eluga Switch Firmware and then, restore your 5.0.2 backup
If it doesn't work, you have to request all boot block from 5.0.2 6045O (tz,rpm,sbl1,aboot,hyp).

I mean I've already tried restoring my backup, maybe my backup of my boot and my system image were already had a corrupted hyp? It is odd that even using alcatell's mobile q isn't getting me back to a stock untouched hyp. Yeah I think I need to request all boot block from 5.0.2 6045O. How do I do that?

Do you mind booting TWRP from fastboot and pulling the update.zip from the device? You could also pull it to your computer and edit the updater-script to remove patching that file and see if it gets somewhere.

So I am going to try to use Mobile Update Q version 5.0.9 to get android MM on my device through that program. I will update if it succeeds. Also seems as though my system partition was larger than it should have been somehow .
Edit : Nope still only gets me to a stock 5.0.2 :/
Edit2 : Trying to sideload the update.zip from the stock version of my phone, given by mobile update q 5.0.9, through the stock recovery adb. It is looking promising.. It got past verifying the current system and is now on patching system files!
Sweet ! It worked! Thanks for the push in a different direction Unjustified Dev!
Some things I did differently were not upgrading while in developer enabled mode, Using mobile upgrade q 5.0.9, and trying to sideload the MM update as soon as my phone booted into 5.0.2.

[1] There is this program called mobile upgrade q that you can get from the Alcatell website. Get mobile upgrade q version 5.0.9.
[2] Run that program and follow its instructions, You WILL loose all your apps and internal storage data (data not on your sd card) in the process.
[3] I guess once your phone boots up it will be on stock 5.0.2, I think you can just update from here normally ... but what I did was sideload using adb (look it up it is a downloadable program and also something that come within the stock recovery of the phone which you get to by shutting down your phone holding down both power and volume up buttons and releasing the power button while still holding the volume button up when the screen turns on.)

I got all that, how do I capture the OTA file before it deletes itself so I can sideload it?
Download it from the idol 3 Reddit, someone uploaded their's.
Or after you download the update you need to unlock the bootloader with fastboot commands, boot into twrp, and copy the update.zip elsewhere.
this is where the update will be /data/data/com.tcl.fota/.fotadownload/update.zip ... but you can only really access those folders through TWRP
