[Q] Why would "shell" app be using the most battery? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My battery drained unusually quickly today and I couldn't figure out why. In BBS I didn't see anything suspicious but then I pulled up the stock battery stats and found that the app "shell" showed 32% battery usage, whereas screen and phone were only 14% and 12%. Very unusual stats for any android phone I've ever had (still fairly new to the n5).
Any idea why it would use more than twice as much as the screen or phone which should be the top culprits? I'm running stock ROM, with Xposed + GB, and Franco kernel.

Can you give us screen shots? is it shell.google?
Possibly wipe the cache, deplete the battery and fully recharge.

Attached is a ss of the stats. Are you suggesting to wipe the app's cache or the entire phone's cache?

This is the first that I have seen this, so it is something specific that you have done to the phone/ installed. It clearly is not normal behavior.
If you are running franco nightlies I would check his thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2508284 incase it is that. Otherwise, I would try a factory reset as my next option.

Well, without any real changes by me it seems to have resolved itself. Battery life has been back to normal, hopefully it doesn't become an issue again!

This is just how it works. This isn't an issue. If u notice when it reboots the bar in battery stats is at the current battery percentage ie if u reboot at 50% and go into battery stats you will see the bar begin halfway down. This isn't a rom problem whatsoever. If u want to see the battery the whole time through then don't reboot. The battery time resets upon reboot but the battery percentage starts at the correct position

Better Levels are all over the place.. Within 5 minutes I gained 20% increase

So oddly enough within 5 minutes of charging I jumped 20% - battery stats?

Really didn't leave a whole lot of information for anybody to work with, for example I know theres a rom kicking around out there that would only update that battery in 20% increments. or Maybe it just felt like 5 minutes? or Maybe it wasn't as low as you thought? but sure wipe battery stats wont hurt nothing
Okay, now I'm a bit upset, I looked at my screen and it said "Charged" then I booted back into recovery and it went down to 98% and stayed there, I waited a good 5 minutes and still no 100%. So I went and wiped the Battery stats anyway - idk what to do.

How can you solve it?
Don't let your battery get below 10%?
The system is designed so that when the battery gets too low it turns off a lot of stuff so that the device will last for longer to do what it was actually made for - be a phone.

Indeed often the cpu is slowed down to which would cause lag.
But yes the best thing to stop it would be to keep your phone charged

Battery drainage and heating after installing a new rom

Hi,i've installed numa's 4.0.4 rom and now i get this problems, the battery actually drains in 3-4 hours from a complete charge, which is about 25% and hour with no usage at all plus its getting really hot even if im not using it.
I really like this rom so if there is a way to deal this problem without reflashing than it will be great, any thoughts?
Can u give a us a screen shot of usage stats and even maybe install bad ass batter stats and see what is happening. I have installed numa numerous times with no complaints.

If you are getting issue with numa's 4.0.4 rom then try another rom.
There are other rom I think that will fine on you phone.
Did you fix it yet?
It could be a rogue app you installed. Try using apps like Gsam battery monitor, Batter Batter Stats, System panel, to find the culprit.
If that doesnt work try Wiping Data and Cache and flash Numa again.

I did a clean Inltall. Using 4ext recovery (latest build)
Everything is great, but I can't seem to make the battery work as it supposed to... Whenever I'm charging it, it never charges to 100%, it goes up to a max of 80%, then if I reboot, it starts showing 100%, I did the Battery Calibration routine a couple of time, didn't work for me :/
Any suggestions ?
Try wiping battery stats in 4ext

Should I change the kernel in order to make the battery life as long as possible? if yes, could you please link one?

if you are coming from a fresh install give to the battery 4-5 circle charges and then see how the battery behaves
don't change kernel for now
