Updating Baseband/Modem before flash 4.3 ROM - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I've scoured the forum looking for an answer to my exact question but haven't come up with one that really satisfies it.
I'm looking to flash a 4.3 ROM (probably old&slow's:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591895).
I'm currently running CleanROM 7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832070).
In the thread it states it was based off VRBMF1 firmware. old&slow states (as do most other 4.3 ROM dev's for issues relating to the partition structure I believe) that you have to be running ML1 or earlier bootloader.
My baseband version is LG7 (I535VRLG7).
I guess my question is two fold. I'm a bit confused on the semantics. So I'm getting that generally the bootloader matches up with the baseband version. But in my case because my ROM and Baseband are mismatched, it seems like I'm running a newer bootloader (MF1) then my baseband (LG7)?
My real question is do I need to flash a new Baseband or Firmware (or Both) before doing any ROM flashing?
I understand invisiblek's post about only giving the baseband update. So should I flash the latest baseband?
Will any of this have any effect if I decide to flash a 4.4 ROM?
Any help is much appreciated!

Baseband (radio) is kind of your own taste and choice, some are doing great with older baseband and some are doing better with newer baseband. If you don't have any issue with signal drops or such then you can keep your baseband. Flashing a 4.4 rom which don't include baseband (baseband only included with full stock firmware). Or later, if you decided to flash new basaeband it would be fine too. If you're using MF1 baseband you should be OK to flash 4.4 rom.

Makes sense. I'd probably prefer to be running a newer baseband since my current one does, once in a blue moon, cut out. But I'd probably wait until after I've flashed a rom and know it's working before doing it. Just so I can isolate any issues that pop up from either flash.
But you're saying that I'm right to think that my bootloader is MF1 and my baseband is fine at LG7?

You can go up to MB1 modem which is the latest just before ML1 (4.3 modem). I believe LG7 is ICS modem which is old...pretty old.

Thanks. Yeah, I didn't update the firmware/radio when I upgraded to JB. I just flashed the MF1 firmware/baseband and all seems good. Will use it over the next day and rom tomorrow.
After the firmware update my s3 is trying to run software update. I'm still trying to search what files I need to rename to stop this (I did it last year when I ROM'd my phone initially).

If the OTA already downloaded, delete it here /cache/fota
To disable the OTA:
Rename or freeze the apps with Titanium backup:
otacerts.zip located in /etc/security - rename to otacerts.zip.bak
Rename fwupdate.odex, fwupdate.apk located in /system/app
and freeze SDM1.0 located in /system/app

EDIT:
Thanks.
Now I'm just troubleshooting why I can't seem to rename otacerts or change permissions. It's like SuperSU isn't giving it root permissions, but I granted it....weird....
ES File Explorer is giving me a "task failed" when I try to rename it. When I delete it it says "read-only" file system. I realize I need to mount it as R/W but when I try to change permissions in properties it gives me a "Sorry, Operation Failed".
I must be missing a step...hmmmm

Try using Root Browser instead (free app in Play Store, seems I have more success renaming files using RB versus ES File Explorer).

No, you are wrong to think that. If you're on a custom rom then you're definitely not on a "VRBMF1" bootloader. Your bootloader is the same one we are all using, from a pre-release, S3 with an unlocked bootloader on ICS.

I see.....i just flashed the MF1 firmware zip from the link provided in invisiblek's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788313), would that have updated my bootloader? How would I even tell on this phone. I read somewhere the information is provided in recovery someplace.

Just stop thinking about the bootloader lol you only need to be concerned about the bootloader if you're going from fresh, out of the box S3 to rooted and unlocked bootloader prior to flashing a custom rom OR if you accepted this 4.3 OTA (because the bootloader is locked). Generally the build number and the baseband will match. Pretty sure that's what you mean. The build number is which OTA the rom is based on. The bootloader is of no concern for you so long as you continue to flash custom roms and ignore OTAs.

Ah I see. Makes sense.
Nah I was actually curious about the bootloader, but your post makes sense. Seems like as longs as it's unlocked, not to worry about it.
And yeah I understand the build number, and I just updated my baseband. I suppose I'll start looking into flashing some newer ROMs.
The only thing I noticed was that I have to update my CWM to flash any 4.4 ROMs. So I'm gunna look into that.

Well, you actually could pull down the OTA since you're stock rooted but I suggest the short method. You could flash the VRBMF1 rom posted by Scrosler in the dev section. Next, you your baseband would need to be updated by then flashing the VRBMF1 firmware from Invisiblek's thread.

I can't find the Scrosler thread for that rom in the Dev section for sime reason - the CleanRom thread yes, but not the one you mentioned. Could you please post a link? Same situation as above: stock rooted with TWRP (which won't let me flash OTA), already have MF1 firmware flashed but still need the actual stock rom update.

[RUU] [OTA] T-Mobile US Android 4.3 OTA (3.24.531.3) w/ Nandroid, Firmware & Radio
T-Mobile USA OTA to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
Build: 3.24.531.3
Android 4.3, Sense 5.0
* includes Wi-Fi Calling
This is the actual OTA Zip file that is downloaded and then flashed during the update process. I saw that T-Mobile's instructions tell users they must check through their phone, and are not providing a download link.
I extracted it off of my phone's SD Card before I updated, so it is untouched, it comes as T-Mobile distributed it.

I am sharing this so everyone can have access to the official OTA. What you do with it from here is not my responsibility, nor do I care. Enjoy. I am not claiming ownership, nor am I claiming this will be much help by itself.
Update 10/23
The community has spoken, and this has brought a lot of stock options for the end user. As of 10/23 (today), we now have the OTA, a full Nandroid TWRP backup, two versions of the firmware, the radio only and now the RUU itself. The OP has been fully updated with links and credits to everything. Thank you to the Android community, this thread is a pretty great example of open source and people coming together with end products. Thanks for all the help here as well.

So after hours of searching through the forums, I just wanted to clarify a couple of questions.
I have S-Off and unlocked bootloader but Stock Rom - NOT rooted and stock recovery. I also have the original MID/CID - 0713000 / T-MOB010.
I can still get the latest OTA - 3.24.531.3? The only requirement for the OTA is CID/ MID, stock recovery and stock ROM, correct?
Also, If I go ahead update it, My HBOOT will be updated to 1.54 and Bootloader will be locked but I still will retain s-OFF, correct?
And the only way in future to flash a custom ROM is via, htcdev bootloader unlock?
Thank You!!

I am pretty sure you need to relock the bootloader, and have stock recovery. AFAIK those are the requirements. HBOOT may be 1.55 as that is the latest but you SHOULD still keep s-off. But i make no promises. lol But yes, you will have to go to HTCDEV and get your unlock key again if you wantt o flash another rom (its a really easy process though)

Anyways to get a nandroid or to pull /system on an installed update.
I'm currently on a custom 4.2.2 ROM with Firmware 2.24.401.1, HBOOT 1.54, S-OFF, Super CID, and TWRP 2.6 bootloader on T-Mobile HTC One.
What is the process to upgrade to this OTA? Or is there a better to go to latest base, firmware, etc.?

I was on a rooted stock TMo ROM in order to get the update. However, i kept my Bootloader unlocked S-OFF, and I was rooted. Only thing really required is the stock odexed 4.1.2 ROM and the Stoxk boot and Recovery. SOFF doesnt matter, for me it didnt.

The OTA doesn't help developers, they need the patched APK's after the OTA is installed.

As far as the devs go, now they've got the OTA and can do whatever they or anyone else wants with it. Its not really a crime to share.

Thanks for the upload. Question, to flash this, its just like flashing a firmware update, with the silver HTC on the screen? Pushed through ADB?

1. Restore nandroid backup for stock 4.1.2
2. Make sure boot.img and recovery.img are from stock T-Mobile.
3. Get OTA
OR
Download and install the stock T-Mobile ODEX ROM. Flash the ROM, doesnt matter if its rooted or not. Make sure it has stock recovery and boot images. And you can get OTA.

Said by a developer
"ota is just a patch, patches the existing files, with new code, there isn't a whole apk there. is useless unless you have a phone to apply patch on and then pull system"
that's why I was asking. No ROM can include stuff like Wi-Fi calling without the patched APK's.
i noticed this is a higher build number compared to the att 4.3 version

Once again, i completely get this and for someone who wants to provide a full system dump would be great. But im not wiping yet, so i cant do that. Also, the OTA file contains an encrypted firmware.zip file which is completely independent of the patched apks. That's why Mikey posted the Radio. This is the whole reason I gave it to the community.
Anyway, im done. Im not trying to argue about some stupid OTA. If you don't want it, then don't download it.

So, I noticed a problem on 4.3 when trying to boot a recovery in fastboot. According to the following thread, Android 4.3 bootloader has changed the function of this fastboot command:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery_twrp.img
Reference URL of same solved issue on N4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380675
Now, we have to retrigger the command somehow inputting the right information in. When i ran the regular command, it says downloading ...OK and goes through the regular steps, but the phone hangs on the bootloader screen.
It never actually loads the custom recovery, just completely freezes the bootloader. I tried a couple different recoveries (CWM, TWRP) and they just don't do anything except lock up the phone.
I want to preserve my stock partitions and make a backup. I plan to go back to my 4.1.2 and perform the update, then load it and wipe so i can provide the stock nandroid backup for full throttle development. So if anyone knows the current command to boot a custom recovery in fastboot on 4.3, let me know.

[Q] Odin restore with jellybean files?

Hey all, now with the recent 4.3 update that locked the bootloader, i'm afraid of accidentally updating if i ever have to odin. So i have (ics build) VRALF2 MD5, and a VRALEC.bootchain MD5 files. If i use them to odin back to stock, i would be on an ics build, and i would have to update to at least 4.1 to use the casual root method, but if i do update, i will jump to 4.3 and then get a locked bootloader. Where can i find the jellybean versions to odin with, that can get me out of a soft brick? Thanks

Are you already took the OTA update? meaning you're running 4.3 right now? if you do, you can't flash anything else except for stock 4.3 rom and with the option to root your 4.3 (you can not flash back to the older version or any custom rom/kernel) .On 4.3 the bootloader is locked and nothing you can do for now. There's safestrap method to get around the locked bootloader but I don't recommend it for now.
I never took the update, i rooted 4.1.2 and put cm10 on it, and cm11 now. Im just afraid if i ever have to odin i will have to dig deep to find a root method for the old ics build and im not sure if the latest cwm will even work with it. Either way, it just seems like a lot of work, when i could just odin back to jellybean, root, and rom. Thanks for the speedy reply

You can just flash a pre-rooted stock 4.1.2 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2178482
The link seems to be dead. I also have a bootchain file, which sounds like its needed for coming out of a soft brick according to this link It didnt seem like that download would of included that. However, im not sure if it is required.

wait you're not clear, are you bricked right now??
Link is still good, you can directly download from here http://d-h.st/C2e
I'm sorry for the confusion, i'm not bricked right now, but if i ever am in the future, or something else, i want to be able to odin to a rootable version of touchwiz. Not too long ago, twrp recovery was crashing on me, and i was close to odin flashing back to stock, but instead odin flashed cwm recovery. I'm saying that i need a failsafe, if things go wrong

OK, got it here is stock full firmware 4.1.2 http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23134718111254196 just unzip then use Odin to flash back to stock. After that you have to root and unlock bootloader...
Thanks for the link. The zip contains a file called "KIES_HOME_I535VRBMF1_1152558_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5" This can be flashed with odin through the pda slot? Sorry for bombarding you with questions, but i want to be confident i have a working solution if i ever need it. The link for unbricking shows to flash the root.66.TAR though the PDA slot, so i just want to make sure. It also says that the bootchains arent required. Also, is it fine that its a .md5 file? Thanks a ton, you have been so helpful.

Yes, just open Odin and pick PDA and browse to this file "KIES_HOME_I535VRBMF1_1152558_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5" the flash. This is 4.1.2 full factory firmware come with (bootloader,recovery,kernel,rom,radio..everything). Root66 is ICS 4.0 rom modded factory file and not include radio or recovery. In theory to recover you should use a full factory file.(KIES_HOME_I535VRBMF1_1152558_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5)
Thanks so much for all your help! Hopefully i wont need to do a odin restore, but if i do, now i'm prepared. Also, this thread could help someone in the future, which is nice. Again, thanks for all your help

How do i flash radios on nexus 5

So ill try to make this short and sweet but i need help. since 4.4.4 i really noticed bad signal issues and with a speed test my ping is 160 making online gaming really bad. ( its the only connection i have where i live to play online before 4.4.4 it was fine ping was like 70ms)
So i figured out the to get the radios say from 4.4.2 i would download the rom from https://developers.google.com/androi...s/images?hl=de
extract the file and the radio file is inside right. now how do i flash it. using Android SDK is there a tutorial or video somewhere. And can i use the roms from that site on a canadian nexus 5 my 4.4.4 build number matches the one on the site so im guessing yes.

From start to finish, skip over what you've already done.
1. Unlock your bootloader.
2. Root.
3. Install custom recovery using fastboot,
Google TWRP Hammerhead and the site for the recovery image and instructions will show up.
4. Have the modems downloaded, search for the thread here in Nexus 5 forum.
5. Go to Install .zip in TWRP recovery and flash the respective modems.
Protip : look up how to make an EFS backup just in case you somehow manage to corrupt your IMEI.

Check APNs if that doesn't work then
Return to factory default.
Not much else you can do without root.

Which without root is impossible unless the OTA comes through and its dependant on the country you're in. You could flash the 4.4.4r2 stock image using fastboot.

You don't need to be rooted persay to flash a modem, just a custom recovery. It just makes things easier. If you're going to unlock for sure, rooting makes things easier even though you don't REQUIRE it.
Best of luck and let us know how it all goes.
Why not extract the radio from the Android image and flash it via fastboot? That doesn't require root, only the phone to be unlocked.

That is news to me. Haha, how would one go about doing this? I only knew about flashing a stock image that comes with the radio, and the radio zips in recovery...or did I miss something can you extract the radio from the factory image and flash it alone?

OP decided to create more (mostly useless) threads in one day than I ever have on my account lol..

How do you flash a previous radio/baseband?

I have been reading these two threads closely:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...ide-nexus-5-how-to-unlock-bootloader-t2507905
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/faq-to-android-read-post-root-t2508292
But one thing I am yet to understand, is how do you go about flashing a baseband? What I've learned so far, is not to rely on toolkits. I will follow the directions from the first link, which seem pretty straightforward.
I downloaded the factory image "KOT49H" which corresponds with the baseband I want to flash, that being from 4.4.2. If I want to flash the baseband only, would the command be something like this?
fastboot flash radio radio-hammerheadx.x.x.x.x.x.x..img

almost all the radios are available in zip format(check the xda thread for the zips. all you do is download one, then go into your custom recovery and flash it there. it takes seconds, then boot up after that. btw, radio and baseband is the same thing in this conversation.

if you are using fastboot to flash a radio then that is the correct command. but, as i said, its much easier to download a zipped up version and flash in recovery.

yes that's how it would look like if you want to flash a .img radio file via fastboot

or just download the radio zip you want and flash in recovery,

right, that easy. if you want to be safe, make a backup in recovery before flashing. that way if the new radio gives you issues, all you have to do is restore the backup.
I've never flashed anything, but have been doing my research for the last few months. Everything seems pretty easy to follow. I guess the coward in me never really gave it a chance. I'll give it a go and do a follow up on the results.
Thank you so much for the help.

are you not happy with your current radio? i do it occasionally, to check if another radio is better. if so, ill keep it, if not, ill flash to the previous radio i had. but anything you flash, if you make a backup in recovery first, itll save what you had before flashing, rom as well. when i first rooted ages ago(g1), it also took me month of reading before doing anything. but once familiar with it, it doesnt take any thought anymore, and ive been helping others with it here on xda since.
After the update from 4.4.2 to 4.2.3 and then to 4.4.4...reception kept getting worse. And then there was the battery issue, I used to be able to keep a charge for over 24 hours...now it doesn't last more than 5 hours. Some individuals from another forum have attributed it to the baseband. Several of them went back to the 4.4.2 version and say the battery issue is gone. I've tried everything and this seems like the last resort.

the radio that came with L gave me issues, the radio before that worked fine, so i went back to that. it would all depend on your location, in how well they work for you.
OK so on an unrelated note, now that I'm unlocked what does this mean now that Android Lollipop is about to be released? How will an OTA update affect my phone? The modifications I've made so far is installed CWM recovery and SuperSU, reverted baseband to previous 4.4.2 version, and changed the kernel to Franco Kernel. All other system apps are intact.

You won't get OTA because you're too modified. But now you're rooted, you owe it to yourself to learn how to manage your modified phone. OTA is the worst way to update in your situation.

you cant get a flashable ota. you might get an ota, but it wont flash. only the original rom with all of its files intact can receive and apply an ota. a day or two after source is released, youll be able to flash a rooted version. or you can flash the factory img and reroot.
I think I may write a thread about this.
So it sounds like a rooted version would be the easiest thing for me then. Now, it won't delete all my data will it? As in a typical OTA update all the data remains intact. Any suggestions as to where I should be looking for a rooted versiob when it is released?

I'm positive you'll have to do a full wipe to flash the 5.0 rom. So, yes you'll lose your data. You could try just flashing the system.img and boot.img from 4.4.4 then taking the ota. But back up everything off your device. 5.0 is a different animal and most likely will require a full wipe before working correctly.

I have stock Android 4.4.4, but the baseband from 4.4.2 along with Franco Kernel. If I were to revert these to the originals found in 4.4.4, would it be enough to fastboot a rooted version of Lollipop, without running into trouble? As I understand it, even if I were to revert these I still wouldn't be able to get OTA because of CWM recovery. Am I correct?

You wouldn't need to revert to fastboot. Fastboot will replace these so it doesn't care what's there now.
Have a read of the thread in my signature about rooted users updating.
