Anyone else have this problem? Can't imagine I'm missing a setting.... Mute generally means mute.
According the this screen shot all sound should be off, correct. Dumb question but I want to make sure I'm not missing something.

So, I'm the only lucky one with this problem? It's not a big enough deal to return to it but it is annoying.

Audio manager from the play store effectively shuts the sound off if anyone else has this problem.

Samsung wants me to send the phone in to fix this but I'm not sure being without a phone for a week or more is worth. Plus, I'm pretty sure if I install a custom ROM this problem will disappear. I'm frustrated, this is a stupid easy problem to fix (with an app) but a BRAND NEW phone should not have this problem to begin with. I wonder if I flashed the stock rom on top of the stock rom (lol) if that would work? Only one other person has this problem?
factory reset should fix your problem.

As a workaround you can choose "Silent" as your Notification sound.
If you only need this functionality at work for example look at Llama that will allow you to configure it very easy.

I've tried Llama before but really didn't look into it too far. Where I work is only about 3 miles from my house so I'm bouncing off the same tower in both places..... Did not work too well with Llama. Can someone check if there volume shows the same as mine when set on mute? The only thing muting is the ring tone. Just curious...

I see the same thing if I set the phone for Silent mode.
There's all different notification sound settings in this phone, I've noticed - my email accounts have their own notification settings per account, messaging has its setting, etc.
Maybe Silent mode primarily silences ringtones and doesn't prevent separate apps from making sounds? Which types of notifications continue to make sounds?
- ooofest
All of them. Anything not set to silent (email, text, messaging, etc) makes a audible notification when the phone is set on mute. Also, when my phone is set on vibrate I also have audible notifications.

From the User Manual, pg 124:
Use Silent modes to temporarily silence the sounds your
phone makes, except for media playback and alarms, or
replace them with vibration.

So, it doesn't seem to claim affecting your sounds beyond the ringer and maybe keypad noises or similar. Working as designed, it seems (not that I agree with their design, in this case).

To me that means it should silence notifications since it's not "media" or "alarm"? I'm just going to buy sound manager since it has more options anyway..... $2.99 to end my frustration with this

I would classify "alarm" as notifications, in trying to interpret their jargon for the context given.
Yeah, an app which can configure sounds across all your apps and settings seems best, here.

Appreciate you looking that up in the manual. I actually downloaded it after your post . I bought the app and set my work and mute profiles... Nice app. I know this is stupid thing to worry about but it gets frustrating when I get woke up or a notification goes off during a meeting. Silent on the sound manager app silences everything.

I know this is an old post but thanks for the tip. I was in class last night and someone was giving a speech and all of a sudden my phone starts whistling. I thought it was in mute, apparently the notifications were not. I'll give sound manager a try.

Hello all -
Title pretty much says all, but I purchased a Razr Maxx HD on Saturday and after getting all my settings straight, I can't help but notice how loud the notification tone is. I've gone into volumes and set the notification to its lowest setting (can't understand why the volume is separated, but whatever), but when I get an email it is still very loud. Does anyone else believe their tone is unusually loud? Everything else sounds good, but I just can't figure out why this tone is so loud.
Lol yes. I came from an X2 and have noticed that the notification sounds are very loud even when on low settings.

Not that this will fix your issue.. but I installed the JB leak an have noticed for one the speaker is quieter than when on ICS overall.. and the notification volumes seem to reflect what you would think you would get when setting them to a lower setting.

That's good to hear. I've rooted and installed roms on phones for a few years now (starting with the Epic 4G on Sprint), but I just haven't taken that leap on this yet. The Maxx HD battery lasts so long and the phone seems smooth enough that I haven't had any desire to. Not sure if you even have to in order to run the JB leak, but I haven't gone there yet.
Thanks for that heads up - hopefully that stays when it becomes official.
That's promising. Maybe Moto is aware and will fix it through JB.
Sent via Xparent Cyan Tapatalk 2
I didn't root either the leaked firmware can be installed on a stock phone.. and then if you don't like something you can go back to the official firmware easily.. I am still on the JB firmware and I have no major bugs although battery life seems to be slightly less (still great though)
The leak seems to me to be an early JB build as it is even more "stock' android than the ICS version. The "people" app is stock JB (it doesn't have moto's black themeing applied.. which I actually prefer.) The navigation keys are stock as well.

Guys, I have to ask. How are you adjusting your volumes? Volume rocker or going into settings /sound and adjusting NOTIFICATION volume?
Since our moto device doesn't have the expanded volume control on screen, I go into settings to make the change. Volume is then, not so scary.
Sent from my RAZR MAXX HD using Tapatalk 2
Was just gonna say that. So used to volume down changing everything but under sounds.... solves the issue haha.

Hello all. I am the owner of a Motorola Droid MAXX as my signature can testify. It is easily the best smartphone I've owned but there are a small handful of questions. First one follows.
The volume rocker on the left seems to only control the ringer volume. To change the notifications or media volume I have to go to Settings > Sounds. This hasn't been true on all my previous Android phones. Why is this different? Is there an app that I can buy that will synchronize the volumes when I press the hardware buttons? Have others experienced this?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Sent via Motorola Droid MAXX
Mine's working just fine. Notification volume levels have been tied in with the ringer volume levels since ICS, if I'm not mistaken, and changing the volume in an app that's playing sounds affects the media volume on my end at least.
Mine is definitely not synchronized. Any idea how to fix it?
Sent via Motorola Droid MAXX
Mine is the same as the OP

Mine also has no option to synchronize that I can find.
I believe there are some apps that have widgets that let you see the volume on the home screen and quick click into the volume change setting. Ill have to go find one b/c its a pain in the butt to not know what level my notifications are at unless I go into settings.

Its also hard to get adjusted to the vibrating mechanism in this phone. You will rarely hear it vibrate but you can sort of feel it if it's in your pocket.
Sent from my XT1080 using xda app-developers app
Weird, I tested it out and it looks like my notification volume isn't synchronized either even though all my other ICS/JB phones have been. As far as I'm aware it acts like it is though, I'm pretty sure my text notifications at least have been quieter or louder at different times. I wonder if I should let Motorola know or if it's something intentional?
Volume Control in the Play Store works and is free, but occasionally the ringer volume doesn't change the notification--even if linked--when using the volume rocker; but it works flawlessly if you open the icon and use the slider. But not bad for free.
Haven't tried the paid one linked above to compare them. Maybe after work when I have more time.
Sent from my XT1080 using xda app-developers app
My RAZR MAXX has the same as op is referring to. I don't mind it. You have to be in the app to change its volume with the rocker.

Sent from my XT1080 using xda app-developers app
I had this issue with my Bionic also. I don't know why they wouldn't have it synced.
I am a bit anoid that in kitkat you cannot set / control the volume of the ringtone and notifications independently
On my old S3 I would use tasker to switch the notification sounds off at certain times but now this also mutes the ringtone
Does anybody know a way to split the ringtone and notification control??

It does work!
Just download it for my LG G2 and it does increase the sounds volume. I didn't want to root the phone or anything as I only brought it this week and to void the warranty on the first week would just be awful!
Without the app, the sound is still very detailed and smooth sounding, but what it does lack is the power and scale of the iPad driver for example. For me, the iPad driver is the best, but the LG G2 is still very detailed. With this app, you get that touch of more power which means increased bass. There is a decrease in sound clarity when this app is in use, but this is not major and doesn't reach uncomfortable distortion levels.
Overall a great app which is free for the first 7 days but then payment is required. But confusingly, it says on the app store that the app costs £1.19 but you actually go on the app and click 'buy complete version' it gives you a link to the Play Store to buy this fish app that costs £2.59. Confusing?
But well done for finding this app for the people who don't want to void their warranty! Much appreciated! I tried around 10-20 apps this week to increase the volume but every single one did absolutely nothing, like LG had blocked anyone from changing the volumes :S

Nope it's not, disabling safety didn't change anything for me on cloudyflex 2.3. This app on the other hand... wow it really amazed me!!!
This app doesn't do anything. It makes treble high and distortion comes along the way. It just gives you false perception of loud music.
This thing comes with junk and was uninstalled right after trying it.
