So I traded my one X for a Lumia 920 and the guy came back texting me about how he somehow got into the recovery screen and it says there is no OS installed, he had pictures to prove it. And he also has a mac, so I don't know what to do. The boot loader is relocked so he's not even rooted, that eliminates flashing a ROM. I'm lost, RUU don't work on Macs either.... What should I do?
It doesn't sound like it's your fault that the guy screwed up the phone after you gave it to him. Not your problem?

Was the phone relocked and functional when you gave it to him? And, was it s-on or s-off?

Well, if the phone was s-on and relocked, and functional when he traded it, clearly the other guy screwed it up. But if the OP just relocked and powered off when it still had custom recovery/rom, then it would not have been able to boot up in that state.

It was s-off and it was working perfectly. Relocked bootloader and he was like "I was downloading apps, then it rebooted to recovery and I texted you because I got scared." That doesn't sound right to me. I think he wiped the system and tried blaming me.
How can he text you from a phone that has no operating system? Just saying...lol.

158 error usually means that it cannot find the image or you have the wrong or a bad ruu. Try downloading the correct RUU and running the exe again. Just to be sure, your phone is stock and has never been tampered or had cid changed?

Please read before doing anything else with the RUU:

SuperCID + S-on + RUU = brick
If you are SuperCID (which you should be, if you are rooted) then the RUU not running is a good thing. It would have bricked you, if it ran.

I have been having serious internet problems on my pc. I can never get ruu to finish downloading with out errors. I do have the ota zip file. I'm rooted, super cid and s-off. Is it safe to update that way or should I keep trying to get ruu to download?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Man! Why do want to ask such hard questions? I know you can install zip from sd but I could not say how safe it would be.

I was able to when I had S-OFF and the bootloader unlocked. I RUUed to 2.20, then I applied the OTA update from the stock recovery. My phone is still kicking. I tried to get everything back to stock after that, changed to stock CID, wrote the secure flag, and then locked my bootloader. I regret doing that now as I no longer have a root method on 3.18.
That's why I'm hesitant lol I guess ill keep trying for the ruu to download. Unless I can get a 100% positive answer... I tried to dl it with my phone and straight talk just throttled me at about 450 megs so I figured I'd stop before they killed my data connection again. They shut my data off last most for like a week and a half

I flashed the ota before the ruu was released, and I've been fine. You do have to have stock recovery in place, so you'll have to run the 2.20 ruu first. You can't flash the ota with a custom recovery.

No need to relock since you're S-OFF, you can flash OTA via Stock recovery. I'm not sure what will happen if you're flashing over a custom rom... I've only ever flashed an OTA over stock ROM myself.

I agree that Samsung+Odin makes life easier. But I like the challenge in AT&T (and Motorolas). Whatever floats your boat. Glad you got it rooted. Can you put a [fixed] or [solved] tag in your title? That way people can easily find the answer instead of making a new thread

Now that we have the exploit to unlock the bootloader on 3.18, I thought I would give you the run down on what to expect.
The first thing that you need to know is that your hboot version will not allow you to flash custom roms properly. You will have to manually flash the boot image: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136172 . Flashing roms without doing this manually requires a method called S-Off in witch you remove security: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155071 If you are thinking about flashing aosp based roms you will have to s-off "FIRST" and downgrade your touch screen for them to work properly: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2159863
Hopefully this will eliminate some confusion and help you on your way.

Go here : [ROOT] HTC One X AT&T 3.18
I have been unlocked and have superCID, when trying to flash custom recovery via the fast boot it seems to install fine but when i reboot into recovery the recovery is blank any ideas? What are the steps i should properly take to gain Root,s-off etc. Any assistance would be aprpeciated.

What I am asking is if you went to the HTC dev site and received an unlock token to unlock the boot loader after gaining temp root. If so you can download goo manager from play store search for twrp and it will install it for you. Make sure you stay with 2.3..... 2.4 has issues wiping on our phones.

you need to hold the volume down button and power. once you get into the bootscreen choose recovery. This will load up TWRP. Once your in you can gain SU by going to advanced and fixing permissions I believe. Also note when installing custom roms you must do a complete data wipe/cache/dalvik/system or you might have boot loops or no boot at all.
You gain such by flashing su in recovery.
