[ROM][GT-S8000] Android for non-android phone [JétDROID] CyanogenMod 7.1 unofficial - Miscellaneous Android Development

Jét-Droid project
This mind-blowing development project has successfully ported Android to the non-android smartphones by Samsung S8000 and S8003
Dual boot (JetQi bootloader) preserves stock OS on the internal memory and boots into Android from the external micro SD card
Altough JetDroid project was done also for Samsung S8003, I will refer here only to S8000 as I couldn't test any of this with the S8003

HARDWARE INFO
SAMSUNG Jét S8000
"Smarter than smartphone"
With this enormous fanfare worldwide, (with the General Manager for the UK who tought that the Samsung Jet S8000 is better than the Apple iPhone 3GS) Samsung's flagship handset as of 2009, Samsung Jet S8000 was released with this not really modest marketing tag that can be found still nowadays on internet.
Yet, altough released back in 2009, the hardware of the S8000 is even as of beginning 2014 still better than many modern low-end android phones and throughout interesting target for the android porting development:

DEVELOPMENT INFO: about "JETDROID"
Target: porting Android OS to non-android devices Samsung Jét GT-S8000 (and GT-S8003)
"JETDROID": HOW DOES IT WORK?
Linux-based hardware of Samsung Jét is in general capable of booting into Android OS
Boot into Android OS is done here directly from external SD card, not from internal memory
JetDroid partition of the external (removable) SD card is formatted with Linux OS to ext2 or ext3
JetQi bootloader must be flashed on the S8000, boot into Android is possible with 2-buttons-combo
Original Samsung's firmware remains unmodified and the S8000 can also boot normally into stock OS

INSTALL CHECKLIST:
S8000 must be unlocked (both sim and network) otherwise hard-brick by flashing of the bootloader is possible
Samsung mobile usb driver must be installed on your pc and device recognized by the pc
Compatible original firmware (list in the guide) must be flashed with multiloader v.5.62 (attached)
After that, the JetQi dual-boot bootloader must be flashed with multiloader v.5.62
External SDHC card must be inserted in the phone (the faster SDHC card is, the better)
Card gets formatted by running Samsung OS with Ubuntu/Linux OS (running Ubuntu in the Virtual box or as "Test Ubuntu" (live CD) is also possible)
Unmount TFLASH volume (careful here, as MFLASH is internal partition of the stock fw of your phone!!!!)
Better use "Disk Utility" than "Gparted" to format the SDHC card and format first partition as "Master-Boot-Record" (ext2) for JetDroid ROM
JetDroid partition size for JetDroid can be between 1550-1950mb, create another partition (rest) as FAT
Mount both volumes/partitions (ext and FAT)
Extract in Ubuntu downloaded ROM and paste all files on the JetDroid partition
In "Terminal" (Ubuntu) set permissions: (sudo chmod -R 777 /media/yournameforjetdroidpartition(withoutspaces)
Now "Safely remove parent drive" (phone) and switch off the phone
Boot with 2-buttons-combo into Android OS (call&power buttons)

State-of-the-Art ROM for JETDROID
NOTE: my own reccomendation is to use only the very fastest SDHC cards you can get. Don't even consider anything beyond Class 10, otherwise you will face unstable and laggy performance. Sandisk extreme 80Mbps will work the best.

Out of my own experience, I can report here only of four ROMs that I was able to boot on my S8000. Regrettably, I have missed whole this exciting development project although I own this phone since 2009: I simply never browsed in internet, couldn't even imagine to boot into Android OS with it. If you ask me "is it worth it"? I will say: yes, definitely! One can use Samsung's TW2.0 for calls, SMS and mobile internet and Android with WLAN. It is matter of taste, I really enjoy to use Android with my Jét, especially my favorite ROM, the CM7.1 by Carlos_Manuel

JETDROID ROMs - functionality comparison:
Eclair 2.1 (JetPlatform0.2 and 0.3)
ADB: NO
WiFi: NO
Bluetooth: (send & receive) NO
Root: NO
Touchscreen: YES (fully working)
Google (Play Store / account sync etc): NO
Apps: YES, at least all of those you can install
Android version features: YES (languages, etc)
Functionality: unstable, laggy, freezes often, no tone (indication works)
Comment: despite just few working functions, developing of this ROM was simply the revolution in person and excellent base for further development. A key-feature (JetQi bootloader) was invented short before this stage. Reportedly, Wi-Fi was working on 0.3 platform, however I wasn't able to turn it on, or I have used wrong files on my SDHC card.
CyanogenMod 6 (Froyo 2.2)
Unfortunatelly, I wasn't able to boot this ROM. I've tried all tricks but the ROM I found and downloaded simply didn't boot. I am grateful if anybody gives me a hint where to download working one.
CyanogenMod 7.1 (Gingerbread 2.3.7)
ADB: YES (everything works: push/pull, installing apps, logcat, permissions changing etc)
WiFi: YES (fully working)
Bluetooth: YES (fully working: send & receive)
Root: YES (I've gained root access it with the SuperOneclick 2.3.3 root tool by Shortfuse, that uses ADB to install Superuser and busybox)
Touchscreen: YES fully working
Google (Play Store / account sync etc): YES (all working)
Apps: YES (all apps work here: no matter if root or no-root ones)
Android version features: YES (all working)
Functionality: altough slow compared to modern devices, with fastest SDHC cards it is stable and not too laggy, it makes definitely fun to use it. Not so with slower SDHC cards: unstable und laggy, CPU gets warmer then.
Comment: overall best ROM that I could try. If some day a Jét-driver for the SIM card get succesfully developed and some recent Linaro codes implemented in the kernel to boost its performance, this ROM would be just perfect for the S8000
CyanogenMod 9 (Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4)
ADB: YES... (not fully, installing Apps via ADB works, read comment)
WiFi: NO (freezes)
Bluetooth: YES (I didn't try data transfer)
Root: ALMOST (read comment)
Touchscreen: ALMOST (cursor circle works, also click, but not "hold" click, therefore difficult scrolling)
Google (Play Store / account sync etc): NO (no Wi-Fi, no SIM card, so no connectivity)
Apps: YES
Android version features: YES (multi-languages, time zones, correct time displaying)
Functionality: early development stage, tough obviously great potential for the S8000 in ICS, hopefully it will be developed further
Comment: with this ROM as-is, ADB was working, but it wasn't able to install apps. After just a simple experiment of copy&paste of few files from the CM7.1 ROM (cat, getprop, sh) I was already able to install the Apps and nearly gained root access. Some basic files are missing in this ROM that is bit left alone in its early stage of development (ADB reports: rm not found so it can not delete the files). This ROM has potential to be great and should definitely be developed further, the device benefits of ICS codes, feels smoother and fast.... you can see that it boots into OS about 7sec faster that CM7.1, altough it has a slower SDHC card (about 20% slower). So ICS could likely be "The One" ROM for S8000, by gaining all functions that CM7.1 already has working. I didn't try to create logcat for Wi-Fi enabling, maybe it would give an answer what to do, it is anyway nearly working....

Nice!
But credits goes to Dopi and KB-JetDroid from jetdroid.org / Github.
My built ROM is optimized and includes some other stuff like librsjni file for live wallpapers, etc.
Hopefully someday Dopi and KB-JetDroid starts working on ICS, because it's fast on Jét.

@Carlos_Manuel
OK, I will update the OP under "credits" altough you definitely deserve them as well: I couldn't even find anywhere GB roms by dopi and KB-JetDroid and some of which I found and downloaded didn't boot

I think i'm going to dust off my jet again.

My resistive touchscreen just died on me... cant play with my jet anymore...
Will remember this one as one of the best cellphones i had... shame that samy did.not used android on it.

Oh, pity..... I'm sorry mate
I also really like my S8000. It runs whole day long as radio (app Live365) on Carlos_Manuel's CM7 Android.

I'm trying to get one 2nd hand on Ebay... but since the touchscreen is resistive i'm kinda reluctant...
I was able to remove the "digitizer" from the phone (not glued to the screen) but replace part are way too expensive for me to just tinker with the Jét...
I really liked my jét even if was just to tinker with... One of the best buys i did.

Your phone didn't get broken because of flashing a JétDroid I hope?
The back part gets quite warm, reading a SDHC card costs CPU hard work , it seems.

No of course not.
The digitizer just stop working on most parts of the screen... and its the resistive layer fault because if i press it really hard sometimes it works... its was to expect after all resistive tech like this have a limited number of uses until it "breaks".
2nd hand models are quite cheap on eBay but i wonder if the digitizer is in good condition, since i only need that part to reassemble my good old jét...

Good luck

This phone is fantastic, I have one that is indistinguishable from brand new hardly used, it's a new replacement for a digitizer problem , I have never stopped hoping this push would come, there are millions of us who still have this phone, I hope what your doing is advertised widely. Pity samsung didn't release the source code they've missed a massive chance to increase their Street cred with the whole tech buying public and change public perception of their support. Might not be allowed, but I bet many would give a small donation for a fully completed modern rom. Best wishes from me and from many.

I totally agree. The hardware is really good and sturdy, so with the source code, dopi & co would probably easily port ICS similar way like in Badadroid project (with Samsung S8500 and S8530 with Bada OS, last model between S8000 and the revolutional Galaxy S1, i9000) instead of taking the hard road of hardware hacking.
Boot of Android OS from the external SD card slows the phone massively down, as the card slot is a bottleneck.

Ola. Mi Castellano es muy limitado. Lo espero que entiendas Inglés.
This project, as far as i know, was abandoned years ago :/ ... as i recall it does not the cell network chipset (i might be wrong here, i was a few years ago) but i think WiFi was ok and working.
The resistive part of my Jet unit died last year and i just trashed the unit so i cant really test it now. Hope the info helps.

Yes, exactly. Wifi works, not so the mobile network in Android. One needs to reboot to the stock UI to use mobile networks. I still have my S8000 and both android and stock UI are working.

Hi there, I know this is an old thread, but I'm planning on installing it to my hibernative Jét S8000, and was wondering myself if there is a way to extract Sim relative stuffs from Stock Samsung OS and implement it to JétDroid Rom? A question just like this cause, I saw that pretty all of the JétDroid Roms have a problem with Sim, so, is there any way of doing so??
Anyway, thanks for any revelant- or normal- answers,
See ya

Well, AMAIK, the development project described in this thread was the only succesful porting of the Android to the S8000, running it from the external memory card.
None of the ROM versions has ever made it to work with the SIM card if the S8000 was booted in Android.

The Ainol Novo 8 is a great little tablet but has been hampered by some early quality issues and about 4 or 5 firmware revisions that have all been good at something but not everything.
Recently a 2.3.4 beta Rom appeared on the Chinese speaking boards and was a major improvement over the 2.2 releases however as always they were in Chinese as a first language and contained stuff that was no use to us English speaking types. So I decided it was time to apply a bit of magic and make my own Rom. Links at the bottom of the post. This is a direct result of my playing about with the beta firmware then bringing it all together.

About This Firmware:
--------------------
After much frustration having to de-Chinese every firmware for this amazing little tablet I set about making an English one to save time and to learn a bit more about Android, while doing so I also added in the main Google apps that everyone wants but always has trouble getting to behave. Using the current 2.3.4 beta as a base I removed, replaced and added various things to give us a decent firmware that will make you proud to show off your tablet with the unfortunate brand name. (Hands up all those who have had a schoolboy snicker when telling someone who makes it)
While I take credit for the putting everything together in one easy to use package the real credit should goto all those people I sourced the component parts from. Enjoy the firmware
Changelog:

6/11/2011:

Other various sources for stuff about some of the other little tweaks.
Installation:
-------------
Flashing this is a breeze, simply copy the contents of the zip to your SD Card, insert into your Novo 8 and boot into Recovery with Power & Vol+.
Once booted perform the 3 wipes and then install the update and reboot. That's it, no need to install the AC3/DTS license or add Google apps.
If you spot the error about the factory_*blahblahblah*.aml file missing when booting into recovery mode just ignore it. I dumped the automated stuff as it bricked my unit the first time round when flashing the stock beta and I had to do a recovery with the original firmware release. All the automated bit really does is perform the 3 wipes and perform the install so why risk it when it takes only a few seconds to do.
When first booting the homescreen will go black/blank for about a minute. Don't panic this is quite normal it's just everything unpacking and setting up. Set up your wifi, add your Google account and off you go.
Features:
---------
- AC3/DTS Hardware Decoder works.
- Fast and Smooth 160dpi rom with build.prop tweaks to improve battery life and speed things up.
- 3G Modem support is present and has been confirmed working with these dongles . . .
Huawei E160 3G USB Dongle (ompudsman @ MP4Nations)
Huawei E1750 3G USB Dongle with Virgin UK sim. (GFZ @ XDA)
- Full English Rom set to UK region, no hidden Chinese menus to pop out at you. All Chinese only apps removed or replaced with english versions.
- Latest Market 3.3.11 with heavily modified build.prop to show as many apps as possible. This does actually show and install a far wider range of apps than before.
- Uses the free version of LauncherPro because it does seem the best for this Tablet, the Chinese firmwares seemed to have hard coded Chinese in the LauncherProPlus.apk The market will allow you to purchase the Plus Unlocker if you want those features.
- Preloaded with Google Browser, Gmail, Maps, Streetview, YouTube, Google Music, Latitude, Google Search, Calendar and Car Home.
- Google accounts will sync Contacts, Mail and Calendars correctly.
- YouTube plays HQ videos just fine without stutter or lag. (Assuming you have a good wifi signal)
- The stock video player plays most MPG, MP4, MKV files with AAC, MP3, AC3 audio. Plays 1080p quite happily as well if the storage device can keep up.
If you need wider format support but still with hardware decoding where possible get MX Video Player and the ARMv7 Codecs from the market.
- Most of the Games and Apps I have tried while testing work fine. Get Chainfire3D and buy the Pro key to enjoy some of the nice Tegra Games. Check my blog for compatibility of Tegra games.
- Wifi seems better under the new firmware.
Bugs: (Most of these have been documented as an issue with the base firmware)
-----
- Tablet likes to wake itself up now and then for no real reason. (Possible data connections causing it to wake)
- Sometimes the Power button does not work so you can't turn off the screen or power off. Install Quick Reboot off the market or hit the reset button.
- If the Screen is off and the Power button is not behaving another key will turn it on.
- Sometimes the Power Off dialog appears for no reason. Oddly not when in full screen games so far as I've noticed.
- Your Novo may disappear off the Market site for a while or completely. Mine went and then came back about a day later,
this is down to the modified build.prop. You can still download apps directly through the Market app on the Novo regardless.
- Some of the best apps are still not available in the market, Dolphin Browser HD, Facebook and Friendcaster to name a few. This is down to Google Market and not much seems to beat this last hurdle.
- Possible others (Let me know by posting on my blog or threads)
Disclaimer:
-----------
As with any custom firmware there is a risk of things going wrong so if it bricks your unit try a recovery image from Ainol and start again, if you are of a nervous disposition or the type of person who sues for a hobby please do not attempt to install this. The rom works fine on my unit and others have tried without issue, however mileage does seem to vary with this tablet.

Novo 8 2.3.4a Firmware UK Edition (nebularnerd.co.uk, fixed March 2021)
Thank you!
Hi Oberth,
Thank you so very much for the hard work and effort to put something together for this fantastic tablet! We have been hoping to see some english rom's being put together for some time but the fact that this is Android 2.3.4 with all the tweaks and best bits of previous rom's is excellent!!
Will be flashing your rom shortly and report back...
update: flashed and so far so good!
- Huawei E1750 3G dongle tested with Virgin UK Sim and all working.
Also will be uploading you rom to our website which may be found in the download section of the Ainol Novo 8 webpage.
(unable to post a link yet as need more posts)
Kind Regards
gadgetfreakz.co.uk
Thanks for the feedback
I actually bought my tablet from you guys through your ebay shop under the user id thedaybeforetomorrow was most pleased by the service.
Thanks for the offer to mirror and I hope the rom performs as it should, as not everyone can/will download from rapidshare I would like to add the links for your Novo 8 page to my first post here, my mp4nation thread and my blog.
Over at MP4 I have had some feedback regarding the market, while fully functional some have complained of the speed (mainly to do with the markets new design rather than tablet performance) so I am considering for the next release maybe offering both the older 2.xx style market and new 3.x market as separate firmware downloads so people can choose. Both the latest version I have used and the older one seem to see the same amount of apps visible so it's mainly a personal preference.
Just seen your test with the 3G Dongle, going to update here there and everywhere

wow, small world!
thank you for your custom and delighted to hear you are pleased with the service
will be testing further over the next few days, for some reason we did notice that the initial firmware form Ainol played 1080p files flawlessly then slowly playback became worse over following updates although other features/fixes had been implemented.
all mentioned above seem to be as you stated regarding the initial power up and blank screen. can't say we experienced the power button problem yet, works as it should.
the new market is indeed sluggish as with other tablets, a quick search for skype didn't show the main application as most likely with some others that you have mentioned. apart from the sluggish launch, the new market design is not so bad, personally prefer it now being used to it.
Ainol did advise an official firmware was due soon, maybe a mix of that and the firmware's you have worked with will give us an even greater improvement.
loving the honeycomb boot animation!
keep up the great work, will have the firmware link etc added shortly.
The playback issues in the later firmwares linked to the AC3/DTS license not being installed or disabled entirely so playback did get worse.
Can I ask you to re-download the firmware in the first post. I tidied up the readme.txt for readability. nothing else is changed.

sure no problem at all, we have uploaded the firmware to our novo 8 pages download section and provided link to the firmware and to this page at xda.
will download new file and replace the one we have on our server.
thanks again
Thanks for that I have added your page to the links section where ever this is posted and edited my blog to mention where I bought it from.
Can I ask if you could change the name from Oberth to Nebular Nerd on your page, just matches up with the blog then. My user name from here was from years back and I wish you could change it. Part of why I edited the readme was to aka the names

Thank´s a lot!
Now I´m happy with my tablet.
Hello from Spain
First of all, congratulations on your work with the tablet Ainola.
I wanted to ask if you know when it will be available in Spanish.
Thanks for everything.

I just checked and Spanish language is not included, maybe something for the next release
Languages included are: English (Australia / Canada / New Zealand / Singapore / UK / United States) & Chinese.
Thanks, I'll try to see how it goes anyway.
But if you can include it in the next version, would be welcome here in Spain.

That would be down to Oberth aka Nebula Nerd but don't believe it would be that hard to do, i'm sure he will let us know
Additional Languages
Hi kinterinho,
I shall have a look into adding additional languages into the firmware and see what that requires. This beta was released with only Chinese and English language files built in but I may be able to borrow some from another rom.
The only thing that might present a problem is if LauncherPro refuses to change all it's options to Spanish in the same way the default Chinese one would not become fully English when you changed the language. I shall have to experiment and see
Cheers for the update, having a few issues.
Iplayer app now apears to suck goats since using this ??
any ideas ?

Hi, I think you will find the BBC iPlayer app has always had issues.
Playback should be fine via the browser, this firmware plays iPlayer via stock browser although previous firmware required dolphin browser hd.

I appreciate you try it. In Spain would do well to include also the Spanish language.
I read on the post to see if there are any changes.
iPlayer is indeed pretty poor.
Yep confirming GFZ's post, it will play with the stock browser set to mobile but quality is pretty poor. I remember it running better on one the original stock roms. It could be one of a few things.
- Bug in the firmware with flash, although Youtube works through the various browsers ok. You can't use the Youtube app for comparison as it's not flash driven.
- Could be a VM Heap issue with it taking up to much space (need to play with that and see)
- Could be the higher dpi on top of the higher res causing the poorly coded app lots of effort in the upscale, dropping to the original 192dpi might cure it at the expense of fuzzy text and icons, again I need to test, not sure if dpi switchers play nice with this rom so you could at least hop between them for different tasks.
- I might try embedding it in the rom as well, The Youtube app hated being added to the tablet post flashing and performance was poor but ran just fine after being flashed in.
The problem with iPlayer for Android was that it was released only after a lot of complaints from the community at large about them only supporting the iThings. BBC were not really wanting to make it but cobbled something together just to shut people up.
Quick edit: Hit the settings button and drop the quality to low in iPlayer seems to play the same as in Browser. Not ideal I know, looking at it more closely it seems to be a buffering issue as you get a few smooth seconds and then it all grinds to a halt.
Multilanguage support
Hi kinterinho
I have been looking into and reading up on how Android handles multiple languages and it looks like it not something easy to do as it's not a case of adding files but adding stuff into the files and given the differences between roms especially 2.2 and 2.3 ones I imagine a cut'n'paste job wont do it.
However I have the beginnings of an idea, it needs some work combined with a recent opportunity that has come my way so I can't promise anything but watch this space.
Thanks you!

About first impression
My first impression of the device was so good. I really feel that the device materials and quality is distinct that other devices i tested.
There is lots of details that make a difference, from the device design, or the software included, or the customization made on the system, etc.
The first time you boot the device, you get a screen to register an iMuch account. This is not required really, but you can do these steps to gain access for Much services (note: most in chinese). In my tests, i remove my Much account, and i can use the device without problems.

(First boot)
There is a icon called Much Helper, that really is a quick guide to use the device, that is so interesting and helpful (this come in english), and show you in short steps the main features of the device and how to use.

Is really nice get a device like this that manufacturer take care about heir users, and provide ways to get familiar and comfortable with the device like this (and in english, a common language).
Another thing that i get may attention is that this device come with no much bloatware, and the games listed are to download from the google playstore (instead of a separated store with software from a non clear origin)

Most of this games are free, or demo versions.(and i thanks for it, because the system come with no unecessary software pre-installed)
Product information

According with the manufacturer, or searching info on web pages, we can found many sources of information about the device and sometimes these information may be not consistent (may be different from one web page to other), and this may cause some confusion for anybody that wants to get info about this product.
On this section i will post the info i get from the manufacturer (or is not possible, the web page that i consider more reliable), listing only the relevant points for a tech analysis of the product, and omit these points that don´t get any relevant info about the device (as many time we found on many pages, things such video capabilities, mail capabilities, etc, that really are software based features that we can install on the device, and not a real feature of the device itself)

ClockWorkMod Recovery (Custom Recovery)

Android have a special mode called Recovery, that is used many times to recover the device if this have problems to run properly, but there exist an alternative Custom Recovery that add a lot of new functionality and tools, and one of the most popular is one called ClockWorkMod Recovery.
There is a full functional version of this recovery that run on this device.
One of the most important features of this custom recovery, is the NANDROID generation, a way to generate a full backup of the nand (where the operating system resides) to a directory, and can be used as a recovery point for the device in case of semi-brick, or simply if you want to get a clean firmware on it.
Take note that this backup (nandroid) is a image of the NAND, this means, there will be stored all your configs, users, passwords, accounts, etc. Is a good idea to get a clean firmware insatlled on the device, and install and configure all your base programs (file admins, cloud services, google account, etc) and then get a nandroid for your personal use. When you get back to this image/backup, you will get a clean and configured system, saving lot of time on basic configurations and installing basic software.
The installation of CWM on this device is easy. For this, i follow the next thread on XDA forum:
How to install CWM on most rooted mtk devices
This method is based on Rua1 tool (a russian guy that develop a specific MTK took), and i will try to explay step by step.
First, you need the drivers ADB installed on the system. If you don´t get yet, then download and install PDANet (for windows, there is the 4.12 installer).
Then install PDANet, and when the program ask for connecting the device (USB), connect your Much.
Program will install drivers (if ask to you, select "other manufacturer" for generic drivers)
When you get installed this program, then go and download "MTK Droid Root & Tools | MediaTek Android Smartphone" ver 2.4.8 (from this thread on XDA)
Run the program. If the antivirus or firewall warning about a unknown thread, ignore it.
The program will run adb and connect with your device. No matter if you set root for ADB and Apps in System Settings, the program will inform that the device is not fully rooted. (there is a yellow rectangle)
Press ROOT button.
When finished, the rectangle will be green

(I will do a copy paste from XDA thread, because is well explained what you must to do)
Click on the tab 'root, backup, recovery' and select 'to use boot from phone' then click on 'recovery and boot' and shortly after a dialogue box will appear asking if you want to 'make cwm recovery automatically' click yes

System start to generate the CWM version.

Is possible that the tool show a dialog with a warning "ATENTION! There is a probability to damage the boot block!". Select "Yes"

About Battery
Some words i must to say about this point. This device is the first handheld gaming console that i forgive to take care constantly about battery level. In fact, using as a normal smartphone and as a gaming console, is a heavy use for me, more than my normal smartphone (i like to use a Motorola Razr), and my phone, only as phone, battery is not longer than Much device.
I don´t know how many hours it can be working, but i´m sure is enough for most of users that want a good duration.
Check the following screenshots:

These 3 screenshots was taken when i get in home, in night (well, really when i remember to take these screenshots)
The most important of these screenshots, are that the device was working as normal usage, with WIFI enabled, one SIM card enabled, and most time (when i´m in train or bus) with Bluetooth enabled (for bluetooth audio), with all normal options for a smartphone standard enabled (GPS, Vibration, etc), and most important, playing normally, and the battery, well, you can see the images. For this reason i can mention that i forgot to check constantly the battery level, to calculating how many time i can play, or anything.
And of course, the battery is replaceable, then if you really need more battery duration, simply buy another battery pack, and carry with you to replace when you go out of power.
Final words

Apologize for the mistakes i did writing in english. As many of you know, this is not my natural language, but i did my best to try to bring to you a readable and understandable article that, sincerely, i hope is useful.
And remember this is not a full article review. It is only a Summary.

Thanks for your work we were expecting. Installed the new rom L_OS 14.1 without difficulty using "TWRP-3.0.2-20161108-trunk.img" + open_gapps-arm64-7.1-pico-20170210.zip + SuperSU-v2.79-201612051815.zip. so far also works updating of installed apps after a thorough tour will let you know any bugs.
Thanks again and good work.
This afternoon I installed the new ROM.
@ottmi first thank you, a job well done. the first impression is really good, I believe that from this foundation will do a wonderful job.
bug:
- The flashlight does not work.
- Some animations are jerky.
Considerations:
The general flow is good, Wi-Fi reception OK
GPS OK
Camera improvements, noisy photos. The 8 megapixel resolution is not selectable.
Battery: I do not know, it takes time to understand.
Awesome first release! Was this a lot of work to get to this stage, @ottmi?
Looking forward to the next build with currently reported bugs addressed, which is when I'll jump into the testing.
Martin
@ottmi
after using for a couple of days the first version of the Rom L_OS 14.1 I consider still to be improved especially the battery life, the management of the status bar and especially the lack of advanced configurations. All this by referring to the Rom "RR-N-v5.8.0-20170115-peach" I have used for nearly a month without any problems and with several customization options although 32Bit. It would be interesting on your part to verify the basis of http://www.resurrectionremix.com/ development for our Trunk 64Bit. Thanks anyway for the wonderful work you are doing.
I'm sorry for my english.
Guys, you have to be more specific than that if you want me to fix problems: @Sampierdarena:
Which animations are jerky? Is this still the case after the 2nd reboot?
Was the 8MP selection available with CM13.1? I think this is a feature of the camera apk..
@josoft86:
What's wrong with the status bar?
Which advanced configuration options are you missing?
I know about the flashlight, this has been a problem already in CM13.1 and I never found a way to fix it properly.
Also there seem to be some issues with the 2nd SIM slot. I sometimes don't get a data connection with the 2nd SIM - the status shows LTE or HSDPA and connected but I don't get an IP address. This doesn't seem to be a problem with the 1st SIM card. Did anybody else witness this problem?
@ottmi
I try to be more precise:
The animations are jerky affect the output from applications. I partially solved with the trim.
The camera: using CameraFV5 you can choose 8 megapixels, I think you're right, the problem is the camera application stock.
The battery with this release has a shorter duration than 10%, I think it is normal with Android 7.1
Thanks again for your work.
@ottmi
perhaps you interpreted my little appropriate proposals, but I did not remotely affect your work but address it on what I thought was perhaps valid for your own product development. I enclose the examples on the configuration and status bar that I used with the Rom RR. Thanks for your work always appreciated and I hope that more and more continuous.
Guys, I'm about to donate my dead elephone trunk if anyone needs it.
it was in great condition but one day it just won't turn on anymore.
it showing charging process once connected to charger, but doesn't react on power button.
case and some other accessories such as spare new back cover can also be donated .
And thanks Ottmi and all other guys for this great rom that extending life of this device!

Can you name an application that shows the video problems?
Regarding the camera: the next ROM will ship with the new Snap app as stock camera that allows for setting the resolution to 7.7MP. I'm not sure thought whether that is native or will be interpolated from 13MP..
I can't really comment on battery life as I'm currently using the phone more intensive than usual and connect it to the computer very often, so the battery will recharge quite often..
@ josoft86:
Since the Ark RR ROM seems to be working fine for you, why don't you just this? I personally have no interest in porting another ROM. I don't even use half the features LineageOS offers on top of stock Android. My focus is on creating a stable ROM and being able to regularly pull upstream security fixes. That being said, all my work is published on my Github account, so anybody who's interested can pick it up and use it as a stepping stone for any other ROM.
New ROM 20170220
There's a new ROM available in the download section. Main improvements are fixing of the disappearing torchlight tile (thanks to the good people working on the Redmi2) and fixing of non-operational mobile data after disconnecting from WiFi. Also, I removed support for ZRAM, LZ4, swap, and F2FS. I don't think we need this (other msm8916 devices are living without it) and removing this brings the kernel closer to the stock kernel and hence improve long-term maintainability. I'm using this now as a daily driver and from my point of view it's quite stable.
EDIT: I messed up the GPS blobs in yesterday's release. There's a new ROM now in the download section that should have workiong GPS. Sorry for the inconvenience..
For those who are interested in details and for documentation purposes: on some msm8916 devices on Android 7, mobile data stops working after disconnecting from WiFi. There a few bug reports on LineageOS's jira on this:
https://jira.lineageos.org/projects/BUGBASH/issues/BUGBASH-72
https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/BUGBASH-129
It seems that netmgrd occasionally crashes and leaves the RIL in an undefined state that doesn't allow for new mobile data connections to be established. The crashes are due to netmgrd freeing non-allocated memory (which jemalloc intercepts and causes the process to abort). As netmgrd is a proprietary Qualcom binary, there is no way to fix this in source. I've tried to use the netmgrd binary from other devices but that didn't help. So I ended up patching the binary and replacing the respective calls to the free function by NOPs. Obviously, this introduced a memory leak and we will have to watch this carefully over time. But at least for now this seems to fix the problem and the memory leak seems to be small.

Maybe it's a silly question, but where is that netmgrd binary from? Would it be possible to use the netmgrd binary from the 32 bits version of Nougat for the google seed?
Meanwhile, my attempts with [email protected] are failing: wifi and ril cannot even start. I will try some change looking at your tree
Sorry for not having tried your rom yet, but I am spoiled with your great CM13

It's the 64bit binary from Crackling. I thought about trying the 32bit netmgrd from Seed, but it has quite a few dependencies in terms of libraries. I would probably have to replace the libraries as well which would mean that the version numbers of the 32bit and 64bit libraries would be different. I'm not sure whether that would contribute towards a more stable ROM
Anyway, the patched version seems to work fine for now. I didn't notice any growth in memory consumption of the netmgrd process, so the leakage is probably small..
New ROM 20170224
There was a problem in the previous ROM with occassional WCNSS subsystem (WiFi) crashes which also caused the BlueTooth stack to crash. Should be fixed now in the new build.
Hi ottmi,
gorgeous work! I just got this device, therefore i did not do excessive testing yet. In comparison to cm-13.0-20160902, the 14.1-20170221 seems to work better (e.g. camera is not crashing). I do have only one question: At least on my device, root can be only set to 'ADB' or 'disabled'. Is this a restriction of LineageOS?
Best Regards,
Jan

LineageOS requires rooting. It can be done in several ways, I chose to use the addon provided by them in the "extras" download section on the LineageOS website.

I've read that Lenovo is planning to officially release Nougat for msm8916 G4... I hope they can provide updated BSP too...
Meanwhile, I switched to your new ROM. It's been a short time, but it looks even better than CM13
Thanks for your great work!
@siljaer
Thank you very much! I was not aware of that.

[Beta][ROM] OXI - turn your smartphone into a computer (oneplus3/t nexus 5x and more)

[For moderators : As there is no "General" forum on the "Custom Roms" section, I hope I'm not wrong posting it here. Feel free to move it where it should be!]
OXI - Beta versionHi everyone!
I would like to present something we have been working on for some time now !
For those who thinks their smartphone can perform the same tasks that a computer can, we would like to allow you to replace your computer with your smartphone, using it on any screen, TV, projector. Basically, it's like Microsoft Continuum but better with Android

OXI working on NexDock
What is OXI ?We're developing a desktop-like environment for Android, implying multitasking, resizing, notification support.
You can use it directly on your main screen but the most interesting is to use a second screen (with MHL/DP or Miracast for instance) to get a desktop environment on it and still use your phone meanwhile.
It might be more clear with some videos : https://goo.gl/6R6rcZ
Our code is now based on LineageOS 14.1, and we're ready to follow the next Android evolutions. We're using LineageOS for compatibility reasons, because we want to be able to try with multiple phones without spending much time on porting.
We're currently in a buiding process, and you can already download the A.2.3 (Nougat) OXI versions for :
- OnePlus 3 / 3T
- OnePlus 2
- OnePlus One
- Huawei Nexus 6P
- LG Nexus 5X
- LG G5 (we have issues with DisplayPort, let us know how is it working for you)
- Samsung Galaxy S7 (Exynos - herolte)
- Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (Exynos - hero2lte)
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 LTE (gts210ltexx)
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 wifi (gts210wifi)
- Lenovo Zuk Z1 (ham)
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro (kenzo)
- LeEco Le Max 2 (x2)
- ZTE Axon 7
Old versions, we still keep it here for the record
Our code is based on CyanogenMod 13, and I'm currently switching the dev branches to LineageOS 14.1. We're using CM/LOS for compatibility reasons, because we want to be able to try with multiple phones without spending much time on porting.
Right now we have several alpha versions
-> OnePlus 3 (oneplus3)
-> Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE Advance (ks01lte)
-> LG Nexus 5X (bullhead)
-> Galaxy tab S2 9.7 lte (gts210ltexx)
Next alpha-releases are going to be Galaxy Note4 (trltexx) and probably Redmi Note 3 pro (kenzo). Not sure right now. In our wishlist (from our french community), are also S6, S7, LG h850, angler, some Asus...

If you want OXI to be on your smartphone, tablet or other device, please tell us! If it's supported by LineageOS, it would be even easier for us .
To have a comfortable experience on OXI, you need to have a mid-range around (from experience, 40-50k score at Antutu is enough). But you need at least 2GB memory, 3GB is better. Basically : more RAM => more apps that can be opened simultaneously without slowing down the system. With 3GB, you can easily open 15 apps. We didn't had enough applications installed to crash our OnePlus 3 .
UsageI'm going to describe really quickly the basics of OXI. You'll find multiple apps preinstalled in the ROM :
OXI : Launch OXI on main display (phone)
OXI Remote : Launch OXI on the external display (Miracast, DisplayLink, DisplayPort, MHL, HDMI, Chromecast or other...)
For wireless, we recommand the Miracast adapters from Microsoft (Wireless Display v2) or from ActionTech. These adapters are fully compatible with OXI and eliminate completely the mouse lag that you might experience with other wireless adapters (such as Chromecast). Give us feedback, we didn't try everything !
OXI Control : A basic tool replacing keyboard and mouse. Two modes, "Keypad" is a simple touchpad/keyboard, moving the mouse from the phone, and the "Pad" mode is a mirrored touchscreen surface. Very cool to play multitouch games in OXI.
OXI Overscan tool : If you are using OXI on some TV you might notice a part of app missing. You can use this tool to crop the visible surface, adjust until you can see a red rectangle around the blue one.
How to launch an app in OXI :
Start OXI from launcher
Put the mouse in the bottom left part to see the menu button an click on it
Start your favorite apps !
How to connect in Miracast
In the notifications zone, select "Cast" and choose your miracast adapter.
If it's working, you should see your phone mirrored on the screen.
Launch OXI on a second screen :
Be sure you are already connected to another screen and mirroring.
Launch OXI Remote.
If needed, enable permissions
Location permission is just used to show the wifi networks
Overlay permission is mandatory for OXI remote, as we're drawing over a different surface than the main screen.
Click on start
OXI should appear on the other screen and your device should have a new notification with "OXI running". You can tap on this notification to shut down OXI.
Control tool usage
The control tool features two modes :
"Keypad" mode is a remote keyboard and mouse/touchpad
"Pad" mode allows you to interact with the active window (the touch surface is mapped to the active window)
Interface quick-guide
NOTE : this is not updated, the new interface is looking way better (check the videos ! https://goo.gl/6R6rcZ
RoadmapPlease tell us your remarks and wishes for next versions, so we can adjust our roadmap by most-wanted features.
Short-term
Screenshot tool
Full shutdown of the main screen when using OXI in remote (to save battery)
Customization options (font size, background...)
Medium/long-term
Inbuilt file manager
Multiple instance launching (ex : two Word instances)
Multiscreen support
Disclaimer
This is an alpha, quite stable but it's not 100% stable or secured.
Installing it is your choice and we're not responsible for any damage or loss of data.
However there's no difference between this and a CyanogenMod ROM for the installation, if you are confident all should be okay. We're using those devices for a long time now, and it works great.
Never forget the golden rule : ALWAY SAVE YOUR DATA, and do nandroid backup before any operation on your phone.
This is an alpha (again), so we might fix a lot of things between releases, so check regularly for updates
Installation/Download :Installation procedure : It's like LineageOS 14.1 nightlies. You might find better tutorial for your particular phone here . Basically, the way to do is :
1. (If not done yet) : Unlock bootloader
2. (If not done yet) : Flash custom recovery (TWRP or cyanogenmod classic recovery), with fastboot, odin/heimdall, spflashtool...
3. (If not done yet) : In recovery, remember to do a backup !
4. Wipe all the phone (Might not be mandatory if you're already running LineageOS 14.1 nightly)
5. Install the zip file
6. (Optional) Install Google Apps (Open GApps, android 7.1)
7. Restart the phone
That might sounds stupid but with my brand new account on XDA, right now I can't post ROMs in each device forum... I will do that as soon as I can...

Known issues/Limitations- Chromecast is supported but won't have any optimization for the latency
- Google Play might be unstable on the desktop environment – the list of apps is not updated (will be fixed soon)
- Authorizing permissions might be difficult in some case. We advice that you also start your apps at least one on your phone screen before launching them in OXI
- You might experience some issues non-related to OXI, it might be related to CyanogenMod 13 :/
- Shortcuts on desktop are saved when exiting
- Bluetooth management inside OXI won't work (yet)
- Some applications (especially some games) won't resize properly. Unity-based games might crash if resized, we're working on it.
- Best experience is with 1920x1080 resolution on an external screen (TV or computer screen).
- Some TV screen won't report the correct real size, so the "size" inside the application might be larger than expected. We're working on allowing you to choose the dpi of each window
- Miracast is enabled up to 1920x1080 resolution and won't support 4K
- Only one instance of each application can be started on desktop mode.
- One application can be started on the phone OR on the screen but not both simultaneously.
- The overscan tool might need to be force-closed its overlay is shown above OXI.
- The ROM does NOT include any Google apps, so you should install them manually (We're usually using Open GApps).
FAQ- I'm an app developer and my app is not resizing correctly, why ?
-> That's a good question . Contact us and we'll see why !
- Are you using the Android Nougat multitasking/resizing ?
-> No, we are based on Android 6 Marshmallow. Our method is a bit different.
- Why do I need a special ROM for that?
-> We added and modified some parts of the Android system, to high and lower levels, to make OXI work.
- That's cool ! Can I use it everyday?
-> Sure, but keep in mind it's a beta right now, with stability and possibly security issues (still dev-code)
- Did you put any spy or anything ad inside the app or ROM?
-> No. Only love and required modifications for OXI to work. And for the app, we just added a crash-reporting library (Firebase).
- Can you make it compatible with [Phone/tablet model]?
-> We would like to make OXI available to the maximum of devices. Just keep in mind 2GB of memory is a minimum and 3GB is recommended. Let us know and we'll try to make it compatible if we can!
- Can you make it compatible with [application] that currently didn't work in OXI?
-> Give us information about the issue, we will investigate it asap.
- Can I install it with a multi-rom loader?
-> Probably... We actually haven't tried it yet. Let us know
- Who are you?
-> We're a small company called Auxens and we are in France (that's also why this text is probably full of mistakes, please put down the forks!). You can check our website, http://www.auxens.com

Very excited to see multiscreen support as a mid term goal.
Switching to Lineage OS could be a good thing. In particular Lineage OS x86 https://forum.xda-developers.com/lineage/general/unofficial-linage-os-pc-based-android-t3531145
Would allow for PC with multiscreen - great for app developers and app research.
Can you help me compile a lineage is x86 version with OXI for display link external screen?
Does it work OK on [email protected] displaylink DL6950 chipset(such as targus 160 dock)?

Hi !
I like the idea of having a vbox x86 OXI available for testing, we'll try to compile an OXI version on this platform
Then some test would be required but if the displaylink driver is enabled in the kernel, it should work for external screen (with USB bus capture by vbox).
For the [email protected] we don't have this kind of hardware here, but if Android supports it, OXI should also work (backgrounds might be slightly pixelated due to their lower resolution). Best would be to ask DisplayLink if they tested the DL6950 chipset on Android devices. And with a android-x86/LineageOS based OXI, it will also depend of the GPU capabilities of the virtual driver.
Its a shame about the 2GB ram Requirement
I would like to run this on my Motorola Razr Maxx XT912 (1GB) as it would allow me to used the laptop dock it was designed to originally use (I actually used the atrix dock as it was easier to get hold of) phone has both micro USB and micro HDMI ports.
I am running LineageOS 13 UTMS_ Spyder on mine and its great waiting for stable LineageOS 14 UTMS_ Spyder and then i will consider an update.
I dont need to run multiple apps at once but will allow me to get mail, open a web browser or an RDP session
So... Is OXI going commercial route?
Or did I read it wrong?
Bb
Hey. Would you add the op3t too? There are enoguh unified Roms, i think its not too hard to add like a New phone? U added the op3 already.
Really woule like to test this with my op3t, thanks!
Great work guys and good luck!

Brilliant. Can't wait to test the vbox image with display link via USB bus capture.
The overall direction I would like to see OXI going is
An android version of https://youtu.be/KpYgOQekstQ
Scalable Adaptive Graphics Environment - SAGE SAGE2.
P.S. [email protected] works OK on Remix OS(android x86 based) but no multi monitor support or plans announced for it. The display link website has android drivers although I only managed mirroring vs the way more useful continuum that oxi provides. If I get my hands on the DL6950 based docks that can be daisy chained to 6 independent [email protected] external monitors I will post back results here or other auxens forums. :svetius

No news from them even on french forums (they are french)... Don't know what's going on. They've been pretty quiet.
Work on rr latest build?
Hi everyone! Sorry for the lack of news. We've been mega-busy after the MWC...
We've been working on a new UI, on the Nougat port (the confectionery was harder than expected ), on a Miracast fix for Nougat/LineageOS, on bugfixes and security improvements.
We will try to share soon some other CM13-based (with new UI) OXI rom, while we are still working on Nougat .
For Android X86-port, it's not done yet, but we're working on it too (would be also very useful for debugging).
Any news for oneplus 3T?
I noticed there is a download for the Note 4 N910F on your website. Has that been confirmed working on a Note 4?
What devises would you like to see?
Hey dev team,
Could we possibly see versions for the nexus 6 and Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1 2014 edition(WiFi)?
Appreciate all of your hard work!!! ?
So, we have been working hard, and finally we can provide you a beta version of OXI on several devices !
We're now based on LineageOS 14.1 (finally, nougat !) and we are currently building OXI with multiple devices. We'll add soon others devices officially supported by LineageOS.
The new version, A.2.3, is now available for Nexus 5X, OnePlus 3 & 3T (same package), OnePlus 2, OnePlus One, LG G5 (however we have issue with DisplayPort right know). Miracast should work.
You can watch new demos on our new youtube channel https://goo.gl/6R6rcZ and check our website https://getoxi.com which is the most up-to-date place to look up on OXI (but also our Facebook page and Twitter account )
His is awesome news. Im downloading it for try in my OnePlus One.
Do you have plans to add a range of cheap and mid level devices? Lets say, Doogee Mix for example. It has a good potential (it seems) but it's not a flagship. This would be nice for emergent countries.
Also, there's anyway to contribute for you guys? like a patron or something?
I have tried to install in my opo and Ive got error: 7 in twrp.
Wanted devices: Doogee MIX as soon it be launched.

Try with another twrp version and check the md5 of your download as well.
@Ox4A4A team,
Will try as soon as I can. But I have no more Chromecast.... It had a little "accident".
Looking forward to the Note 4 port.

first impressions and rooting
Hi,
hope this thread is the right place - I'm new to posting on xda developers (but been reading here sometimes for a long time).
I received my Cosmo on tuesday (2019-11-26).
Overall I'm happy with the device. The keyboard is good and I can actually touch type with it - obviously not as fast as on a full sized one. But Sometimes it misses characters, expecially the space bar.
The german layout is a bit awkward for umlauts. To Type "ä" you have to press "Fn+a", for "ü", "Fn+u" and so on. There is only one Fn key on the left side so fluid typing of especially "ü" and "ß" is difficult.
Software on the cover display feels like an early beta. Very slow and e.g. music controls don't work with all music players - but it has it's value for checking the time or answering calls (and seeing who's calling beforehand).
Battery life is pretty bad but surprisingly unaffected by usage.
... well, it's a low volume device so I'm ok with the downside. And I hope some will be fixed.
Planet computers promised to release officially rooted images and linux support etc.... it's not there yet.
But rooting was pretty straight forward:
activate "OEM unlocking" in developer settings
install magic manager
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flashing unlock
reboot to bootloader again (not sure if necessary)
fastboot flash boot boot-magisk.img
(most people seem to use SP Flashtool, but it worked for me with fastboot which is open source)
I got the boot-magisk.img from here:
https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=35879&view=findpost&p=292918
https://mega.nz/#!U8sFVACI!J-TS3q11Hak-zWt1_nyTyv4m87GkV1YIVDipez05BvE
When planet releases debian images I will try them out.
If you have any questions feel happy to ask.
edit:
the process does a factory reset. So back up your data!
Great
I was a little concerned when I got it yesterday.
Before powering on the first time I inserted a micro sd card.
Powered it on and it just said starting up for 39 mins
Ended up pulling the sd card out, now it works great.
Not sure what's up with that.
deadman96385 is supposedly working on TWRP and lineage os

What filesystem do you have on the sd card?
The Android version is missing some filesystem drivers e.g. exfat and ntfs.
I have 64GB sd card formatted with vfat(32) and it works withoud any problems.

Not sure it was likely exfat.

Muti-boot and Linux Cosmo support update
From email
Muti-boot and Linux Cosmo support update
In this update we would like to discuss plans regarding Linux support on the Cosmo Communicator.
With the Gemini PDA, Planet offered experienced users the ability to install Linux on the device, by connecting it to a desktop or laptop computer and flashing the device manually.
With the Cosmo Communicator we want to improve the user experience when installing a custom OS, such as Linux. To do that we upgraded two key components, the LK and the recovery mode.
The updated recovery mode can be used to partition the storage space of the Cosmo Communicator - see the option "Change the partition table of your COSMO" in the picture below.
This will allow the user to reserve space for the Linux operating system. As you can see in the picture below, there are currently 5 options:
1. Reserve all space for Android
2. Reserve 90GB for Android and 30GB for Linux
3. Reserve 60GB for Android and 60GB for Linux
4. Reserve 30GB for Android and 90 GB for Linux
5. Reserve all space for Linux
Once the storage for Linux has been reserved, you can install a custom OS on your Cosmo, by choosing the related option as in the picture.
This option will scan the microSD card for compatible installers and will present you with a menu showing the available installers as in the picture below.
Whenever new or updated custom operating systems will be available for the Cosmo, you will be able to download them into a micro SD card and install it in your device.
At the moment we have initial support for the following:
1. TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project)
2. Debian using KDE/Plasma
3. Debian using LXQT
4. Rooted Android
Once you select a custom OS you have to select where to install its boot firmware as shown below.
There will be 3 extra boot partitions that can host custom boot firmware.
Once you select the boot partition, the custom OS will be installed on your Cosmo Communicator. A boot menu will then appear when you turn ON the device, allowing you to choose what to start as in the following picture. The boot menu is integrated in the modified LK firmware.
Using this method you will be able to install a custom OS such as Linux on your device without the need for a laptop or a desktop computer. All you need to do is to download the installer in a micro SD card and use the recovery mode to start the installation.
Finally, a big thank you to our open source community (in particular to Sean, Adam and Nikita) which is working hard to get other operating systems supported on the Cosmo. In the following screenshot you can get a preview on what the community is working at the moment. We will provide a detailed Linux status update in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
More from us this still this week. There will be another update later this week updating you on the over the air firmware update and Cosmo shipping.
Best regards,
Team Cosmo

First Cosmo Firmware update - this week!
from email
This week, Planet will release the first Cosmo firmware update.
The latest Cosmo firmware includes new features and solves a number firmware issues reported by users:
1. New settings: switch OFF cover display on power down
This feature helps saving battery when Cosmo Communicator is powered down by switching OFF the cover display. When powered down in this way, you will only be able to switch on your Cosmo using the Esc key and charge your Cosmo using the left hand side USB-C port. We are looking at further power saving firmware possibilities
2. Fix for power charging indicator being on while the keyboard backlight is on.
3. The Duraspeed and Background Power Saving settings status is now OFF by default. This fixes the operation of many applications which were reported to be closing in the background when Duraspeed is ON. Some services were being closed down after some time of inactivity.
4. The eSIM chip status is now fixed after Cosmo restart, so eSIM selection is preserved (instead of switching to SIM lost 2)
5. Fix for Reject ringing call during another call from cover display
6. Fix for sending SMS reject call when two calls exist
7. Fix for Switch calls and merge calls from cover display
8. The Cover Display will now support the advertised landscape mode.
9. The Cover display will also support two font sizes for notification text.
10. Fix for icon sensitivity on top row of icons on the cover display
11. Optimisation for Contact list update on cover display
12. Some stability fixes for cover display

cover display firmware update error
Hello All,
Just received my communicator and during my cover firmware update there was an interruption when I attached the charger to the device. Received flashing error message then tried recommended steps on support site to no avail. Does anyone know where I can get the firmware for a manual flash? My cover display is now not working and won't communicate with the device. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Disregard. Apparently it can take up to 10 times for the flash to actually work.
new recovery
Does anyone have an idea when they are going to update the recovery so we can partition the drive for dual boot?
Anyone know how to make the Esc key behave normally in Android? I never had issues with using the Hacker's Keyboard escape key in Termux, but on my Cosmo pressing the escape key seems to work like Android's back button, which minimizes Termux. I just want to use it like a normal escape key. I currently have vim set to use tilde to go to command mode, but that's a janky solution for a number of reasons and it means that I have to use that setup on any other box I'm accessing a given remote server from. I've looked in Settings->Cosmo Settings and in the Planet Keyboard app, and didn't see it either place. Any help would be much appreciated.
Hi kineyDE,
Do you know which music player apps work with the music controls on the cover display front screen? I can't seem to get the cover display to respond to any of my inputs for any music player I have installed (music, FM, or video app).
VWrestle97
just installed a googlecam port. pictures are acceptable.. not as good as my old iphone 8plus, but good enough

"I have a Cosmo Communicator that has been packed backed into it's box. I feel there are glaring security holes outlined in this article by Ninji:
https://wuffs.org/blog/pulling-apart...emfota-updater
With that said, I have not seen much discussion about the Cosmo Communicator here on XDA. I currently have a useless Cosmo because there is currently no Sailfish available for it, and it doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon. If there is a developer here that would like to work on it, I would be willing to loan out my device for that purpose.
Is there anyone else here who has a Cosmo?"
If a moderator want's to delete one or the other or let the separate one exist, i'm not worried. I just want to get this message out to the community.

Hi as stated by Ninji disabling the updater should secure the device (unless already compromised).
Code:
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.dtinfo.tools
And once there is an update fingers crossed that there will be no new backdoor and you can turn it on again.
Code:
adb shell pm enable com.dtinfo.tools
So far I am very happy with my cosmo, but I am missing working volume buttons when it is closed.

As stated by Ninji in the article:
"Disabling the SystemFota package should stop the device from communicating with Digitime and running the worker, but the backdoor service baked into Android is still there, which allows any app to execute a variety of privileged actions. I assembled a proof-of-concept with it which was able to dump the Android accounts database (including auth tokens) without using Android permissions or requiring user input, from a standard app at API level 28."
You should read the ENTIRE article before commenting.

A software bug or hardware issue?
The power indicator shows charging while not connected to the charger. Don't know its a software bug or hardware issue?
Battery drains very fast even not using.
